Gear selector positions
Park - P
Gear selector and P position overview
Park is activated using the P button located
next to the gear selector. In P mode, the transmission is mechanically
locked.Select P when the vehicle is parked or when
starting the engine. The vehicle must be sta- tionary when Park is selected. To move to another gear from Park, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition inmode II.
When parking – apply the parking brake before shifting to Park.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when park- ing on an incline. Selecting a gear or put-ting the automatic transmission in P may
not be sufficient to keep the vehicle sta-tionary in all situations.
NOTE
The gear selector must be in position P in
order to lock the vehicle and set the alarm.
Help functions The system will automatically shift to P
if the ignition is switched off while
D or R
is selected.
if the driver unbuckles the seat belt and opens the driver's door while the vehicle isrunning with the gear selector in a gearother than
P.
To park a vehicle with an unbuckled seat beltand open door – end P mode by shifting to R
or D again.
The system will not automatically shift to P if
the ignition is switched off while the gearselector is in the neutral position (N). This is tomake it possible to wash the vehicle in anautomatic car wash in which the vehicle ispulled forward on rolling wheels.
Reverse - R
Select R when backing up. The vehicle must
be stationary when Reverse is selected.
Neutral - N
No gear is selected and the engine can be started. Apply the parking brake if the vehicleis stationary with the gear selector in N.
To move the gear selector from N to another
gear, the brake pedal must be depressed andthe ignition in mode II.
D drive mode
D is the normal driving gear position. The
transmission shifts up or down automatically depending on acceleration and speed. The vehicle must be stationary when the gear selector is moved from R to D.

Brake - B
Brake position in instrument panel overview.
From the B position, it is possible to shift
manually. B can be selected at any time while
driving. When the accelerator pedal is released, the electric motor brakes the vehicleand the hybrid battery is recharged at thesame time. This offers additional opportunitiesto recharge the hybrid battery, since the bat-tery is charged even when the brake pedal isnot depressed. Select brake by moving the gear selector rear- ward from the D position. The currently
selected gear will be displayed in the instru-ment panel.
Push the gear selector to the right toward"
+ " (plus) and release to shift up one gear.
Push the gear selector to the left toward"
– " (minus) and release to shift down one
gear.
Push the gear selector rearward to returnto
D mode.
For smooth shifting and engine performance,the transmission will shift down automaticallyif the vehicle's speed becomes too low for theselected gear.

The steering wheel paddles are a supplement to the gear selector and make it possible toshift manually without removing your handsfrom the steering wheel.
" -": Shift down one gear.
" + ": Shift up one gear.
Activating the steering wheel paddlesIn order to shift gears using the paddles, they must first be activated:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steer- ing wheel.
> A number in the instrument panel indi-
cates the current gear being used.

ChangeTo shift one gear:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steer- ing wheel and then release.As long as the engine speed (rpm) is withinthe permissible range for the selected gear, agear shift will take place each time a paddle ispulled. After each gear shift, a number indicat-ing the current gear will be displayed in theinstrument panel.

–Deactivate the paddles by pulling the right paddle ( +) toward the steering wheel and
holding it until the number of the currentgear is no longer displayed in the instru-ment panel.
> The transmission will revert to gear D
or B depending on which gear was
selected before the paddles were acti- vated.
Automatic deactivation
In gear position D, the steering wheel paddles
are deactivated after a short period of time if they are not used. The number of the currentgear will no longer be displayed in the instru-ment panel. In gear position B, the paddles will not acti-
vate automatically.

P
To move the gear selector from P to another
gear, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition in mode II.
From Neutral - N
If the gear selector is in N and the vehicle has
been stationary for at least 3 seconds (with or without the engine running), the gear selectorwill be locked in that position. To move the gear selector from N to another
gear, the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition in mode II.
Messages in the instrument panelIf the gear selector is locked in position, amessage will appear in the instrument panel, e.g.
Gear lever Press brake pedal to

There is no mechanical shiftlock function.

Pure
Uses the electric motor only, with the low- est possible energy consumption and car-bon dioxide emissions.
This drive mode prioritizes the use of thehybrid battery. Certain climate system func-tions are reduced to provide the longest dis-tance using only electricity.
Pure mode is available when the hybrid bat-
tery is sufficiently charged. Even in Puremode, the combustion engine will start if the charge level in the battery gets too low. Thecombustion engine will also start
if the vehicle's speed goes above125 km/h (78 mph)
if the driver requests more power than theelectric motor can provide
if factors such as cold weather affect thesystem or components.
This drive mode is adapted for the longestpossible driving distance with electric propul-sion and is primarily intended for use in city driving.
Pure helps provide the lowest possi-
ble consumption even when the hybrid battery is fully discharged. ECO climate is activated tocontrol the climate in the passenger compart-ment, and in slippery road conditions slightlymore wheel spin may be permitted before all-wheel drive is automatically activated.
ECO Climate
In Pure mode, ECO climate is automatically
activated in the passenger compartment to help reduce energy consumption.
NOTE
When the Pure drive mode is activated,
settings for certain climate system and electricity consuming functions arereduced. Some of these settings can bereset manually, but full functionality will only be restored by leaving
Pure mode or
adapting the Individual drive mode to full
climate system functionality.
If condensation forms on the windows, tap the max defroster button, which will function nor-mally.
Constant AWD
Improves the vehicle's traction and han- dling by increasing all-wheel drive.
This drive mode locks the vehicle in all-wheeldrive. An adapted distribution between frontand rear axle torque provides effective control,stability and traction, e.g. on slippery roads orwhen towing a heavy trailer or another vehicle. The
Constant AWD drive mode is always
available regardless of the hybrid battery's charge status. Both the combustion engine and the electricmotor are engaged to enable all-wheel drive,which results in higher fuel consumption. In the other drive modes, the vehicle automati- cally adapts the need for all-wheel driveaccording to the road surface, and can acti-vate the electric motor or start the combustionengine as needed.
Power

The vehicle gets sportier driving characte- ristics and a faster acceleration response.
This drive mode adapts the combined powerfrom the combustion engine and the electricmotor by providing power to both the frontand rear wheels. Gear shifting will be fasterand more distinct and the transmission willprioritize gears with a higher traction force.Steering response is faster and suspension isstiffer. Both the combustion engine and the electric motor are engaged to enable all-wheel drive,which results in higher fuel consumption.

The shock absorber settings can be adjusted for driving in other conditions or on particularroad surfaces.
Location of adjustment knobsThere are four adjustment knobs, two for the front shock absorbers and two for the rear.There are adjustment knobs above eachwheel. The adjustment knobs for the frontwheels are located under the engine compart-ment hood. The adjustment knobs for the rearwheels are located above each wheel in thewheel housing.

NOTE
Each adjustment knob has 22 adjustment positions. The closer to position 0 the knobis set, the stiffer the suspension.
Adjusting front suspension settingsMake sure the adjustment knob is set to 0 before starting the adjustment. This makes iteasier to determine what adjustment positionis set.
Turn the adjustment knob clockwise or counterclock- wise to change the adjustment position.
Turn the knob clockwise until it stops to get to adjustment position 0.
Turn the knob counterclockwise to the desired adjustment position.
> Then follow the same procedure for the second tire.
Adjusting rear suspension settingsThe rear adjustment knobs are located above the tire inside the wheel housing. To accessthe rear adjustment knobs, the vehicle mustbe raised using a jack; see separate section.

The rubber cap is located above the adjustment knob.
Turn the adjustment knob clockwise or counterclock- wise to change the adjustment position.
Remove the protective rubber cap over the adjustment knob.
Turn the knob clockwise until it stops to get to adjustment position 0.
Turn the adjustment knob counterclock- wise to the desired adjustment position.
> When the desired position has been
reached, replace the protective rubber cap. Then follow the same procedurefor the second tire.
NOTE
For optimal performance, Volvo recom- mends setting the adjustment knobs to thesame position for each axle.

Economical driving
Drive economically and more environmentally conscious by thinking ahead and avoidingrapid starts and stops.
Adapt your driving style and speed to the cur- rent traffic conditions. To help achieve the greatest distance with the lowest fuel consumption with Twin Engine,observe the following:
Charge
Charge the vehicle regularly by plugging it into an electrical outlet. Make it a habit toalways begin trips with the hybrid batteryfully charged.
Locate charging stations along your route.
If possible, choose parking spots withcharging stations.
NOTE
Charge the vehicle from the electricity grid as often as possible!

Slippery driving conditionsTo help optimize traction and roadholding, Volvo recommends using snow tires on allwheels whenever there is a risk of snow or iceon the road.
NOTE
Certain countries require use of winter tires by law. Not all countries permit the use ofstudded tires.
Practice driving on slippery surfaces under controlled conditions to learn how the vehiclereacts.

Driving through standing water
It may be necessary to drive the vehicle through standing water, e.g. deep puddles orflooding on the road. This must be done withgreat caution.
To help prevent damage to the vehicle when driving through water:
Do not drive in water higher than the floorof the vehicle. If possible, check the depthof the water at its deepest point beforedriving through it. Be particularly carefulwhen driving through flowing water.
Do not drive faster than walking speed.
Do not stop the vehicle in the water. Drivecarefully forward or back the vehicle out ofthe water.
Remember that waves created by passingvehicles could cause the water level to riseabove the vehicle's floor level.
Avoid driving through salt water to helpavoid the risk of corrosion.
CAUTION
Parts of the vehicle (e.g. engine, transmis- sion, driveline, electrical components, etc.)can be damaged if the vehicle is driventhrough water higher than its floor level.Damage to any components caused byflooding, vapor lock or insufficient oil is notcovered under warranty. If the engine stalls while the vehicle is in water, do not attempt to restart it. Havethe vehicle towed on the bed of a towtruck to a workshop - an authorized Volvoworkshop is recommended.
CAUTION
Because it can be difficult to determine the water depth, Volvo recommends not driv-ing through standing or running water. Thedriver is always responsible for operatingthe vehicle in a safe manner and adheringto all applicable laws and regulations.
When you have passed the water, press lightly on the brake pedal and check that the brakesare functioning properly. Water, mud, slush,etc. can make the brake linings slippery,resulting in delayed braking effect. If the vehicle is equipped with a trailer cou- pling contact, clean the contact after driving inwater or mud.

Opening/closing the fuel filler door
A button on the instrument panel is used to unlock the fuel filler door.
An arrow next to the fuel pump symbol in the instru-ment panel indicates the sideof the vehicle on which thefuel filler door is located.
1. Press the button on the dashboard.
> Pressure equalization in the fuel tankcauses a slight delay before the fuel filler door opens. The message

for refueling will be shown. If the gas-
oline engine is activated when the but- ton is pressed, it will usually be deacti-vated and the vehicle will switch toelectric propulsion.

4. Avoid overfilling the tank. Do not press the
handle on the filler nozzle again after it has initially stopped pumping.
> The fuel tank is now filled.
NOTE
An over-full tank may overflow in hot weather.
CAUTION
Avoid spilling gasoline during refueling. In addition to causing damage to the environ-ment, gasolines containing alcohol cancause damage to painted surfaces, whichmay not be covered under the New VehicleLimited Warranty.
Refueling from a fuel containerWhen filling from a fuel container, use the fun- nel provided in a foam block under the floorhatch in the cargo compartment.
1. Open the fuel filler door.
2. Insert the funnel into the fuel filler pipe'sopening. There are two flaps just inside the fuel filler pipe and the tube section ofthe funnel must push both of these flapsopen before fuel can be added.

Volvo recommends the use of detergent gas- oline to control engine deposits.
Deposit control gasoline (gasoline with detergent additives)
Detergent gasoline is effective in keeping injectors and intake valves clean. Consistentuse of deposit control gasolines will helpensure good driveability and fuel economy. Ifyou are not sure whether the gasoline containsdeposit control additives, check with the serv-ice station operator.
NOTE
Volvo recommends not using external fuel injector cleaning systems, e.g. do not adddetergent additives to gasoline before orafter refueling.
Unleaded fuelAll Volvo vehicles have a three-way catalytic converter and must only use unleaded gaso-line. US and Canadian regulations require thatpumps delivering unleaded gasoline arelabeled "UNLEADED". Only the nozzles ofthese pumps will fit in your vehicle's fuel fillerinlet. It is unlawful to dispense leaded fuel intoa vehicle labeled "unleaded gasoline only".Leaded gasoline damages the three-way cata-lytic converter and the heated oxygen sensor

1. Put the ignition in mode
0.
2. Make sure the auxiliary battery (the bat- tery used to jump start the discharged battery) has a voltage of 12 volts.
3. If the auxiliary battery is in another vehicle, turn off that vehicle's engine and makesure that the vehicles are not touchingeach other.
4. Clamp the red jumper cable onto the auxil- iary battery's positive (+) terminal (1).
CAUTION
Connect the jump cable carefully to pre- vent short circuits with other componentsin the engine compartment.
5. Fold back the cover over your vehicle'spositive (+) jump start terminal (2).
6. Clamp the other end of the red jumper cable to your vehicle's positive (+) jump start terminal (2).
7. Clamp the black jumper cable onto the auxiliary battery's negative (-) terminal (3).
8. Clamp the other end of the black jumper cable to your vehicle's negative (-) groundpoint (4). 9. Make sure the jumper cables are securely
attached to help prevent sparks whilejump starting.
10. Start the engine of the assisting vehicle and let it run for a few minutes at a higheridling speed than normal, about1500 rpm.
11. Start your vehicle's engine. If the engine does not start, allow an additional 10minutes of charging time and then try tostart the engine again.
NOTE
When the engine is started under normal conditions, the vehicle's electrical drivemotor is prioritized – the gasoline engineremains off. This means that after the startknob has been turned clockwise, the elec-tric motor has "started" and the vehicle isready to be driven. Start of the electricmotor is indicated by the indicator lights onthe instrument panel going out and its pre-selected theme illuminating.
CAUTION
Do not touch the connections between the cable and the vehicle during the startattempt. Risk of sparking.
12. Remove the jumper cables in the reverseorder ‒ first the black cables and then the
red cables. Make sure that none of the clamps of the black jumper cables come into contactwith either vehicle's positive (+) jump startterminals or either of the red jumpercable's connected clamps.

WARNING
Batteries generate hydrogen gas, which is flammable and explosive.

Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Donot allow battery fluid to contact eyes,skin, fabrics or painted surfaces.
