Switching to another device
It is possible to switch among paired Bluetooth ®
devices that are in the vehicle. To
do so: 1. Press MEDIA ,scroll to
Bluetooth and
press the thumb wheel on the steering wheel keypad or OK/MENU.
2. Be sure the Bluetooth ®
device is discov-
erable (refer to its user manual if neces-sary).
3. Press the thumb wheel or OK/MENU.
4. Turn the thumb wheel or TUNE to
Change device and confirm by pressing
the thumb wheel or OK/MENU.
> After several seconds, the names of any paired external devices will be dis- played.
5. Scroll to the device to be connected and press the thumb wheel or OK/MENU.
> The device will be connected.
Audio files can now be selected using the
/ buttons in the center console or on
the steering wheel keypad.
Disconnecting an external device
The external device is automatically discon- nected from the infotainment system if it ismoved out of range.
Removing a paired device
1. In Bluetooth mode, press OK/MENU.
2. Scroll to
Remove Bluetooth device and
press the thumb wheel or OK/MENU.
3. Scroll to the device to be removed by turning the thumb wheel or TUNE and
confirm by pressing the thumb wheel or OK/MENU .
> A question asking if you would like to remove the device will be displayed.
4. Press the thumb wheel or OK/MENU to
confirm or EXIT to cancel.
Random 1
This function plays the audio files on the external device in random order (shuffle). Thisfunction can be activated/deactivated under:
Bluetooth menuRandom
Press the / buttons on the center
console or steering wheel keypad to change tracks.
Scanning audio files on an external device 1
This function plays the first ten seconds of each audio file. This function can be acti- vated/deactivated under:
Bluetooth menuScan. Scanning can be canceled by pressing
EXIT.

This feature offers information about the Bluetooth ®
version installed in the vehicle's
infotainment system. This information can be found under

Introduction
This feature makes it possible to set up a wireless connection between a Bluetooth ®
-
enabled cell phone or other device and the vehicle’s infotainment system. This enablesthe infotainment system to function as ahands-free connection and allows you toremote-control a number of the phone’s func-tions. The microphone used by this system islocated near the driver's side sun visor (2).The buttons and other controls on the cellphone can always be used regardless ofwhether or not the phone is connected to thehands-free system.
NOTE
Not all cell phones are fully compatible with the hands-free system. A list of com-patible phones is available at your Volvoretailer or at www.volvocars.us

Never use the hands-free feature or any other device in your vehicle in a way thatdistracts you from the task of drivingsafely. Distraction can lead to a seriousaccident.

TUNE : From TEL mode's normal view,
turn clockwise to display the phone book or counterclockwise for the phone list. Itcan also be used for navigating in dis-played menus. The thumb wheel in the steering wheel keypad can be used in thesame way.
OK/MENU
: Press to answer an incoming
call, confirm your selection or access the phone menus. Incoming calls can also beanswered by pressing the thumb wheelon the steering wheel keypad.
EXIT : Press to end or reject calls, erase
characters that have been entered, end an ongoing function and goes back in themenus. This button on the steering wheelkeypad can also be used in the sameway.
Getting started
Use the controls on the steering wheel key- pad and in the center console to access, nav-igate and make selections in the hands-freesystem’s menus.
ActivationA short press on the TEL button in the center
console activates the Bluetooth ®
hands-free
system. If the system is already activatedwhen the button is pressed, a shortcut menu will be displayed. The
symbol at the
upper right of the display indicates that the hands-free system is active.
Pairing (connecting) external Bluetooth ®
devices
A maximum of 10 cell phones or other devi- ces can be paired with the hands-free sys-tem. Pairing only needs to be done once foreach phone. After pairing, the cell phone nolonger needs to be in sight or discoverable. Two Bluetooth ®
devices (e.g., a phone and an
iPod ®
) can be active at the same. However,
two phones cannot be used at the same time to make calls. There are two ways of pairing a cell phone to the hands-free system for the first time: Method 1: Search for the external device
using the infotainment menus1. Activate the cell phone’s Bluetooth ®
func-
tion to make it discoverable (refer to the phone’s user manual if necessary) or goto www.volvocars.com
2. Press TEL.
> The infotainment system will search for previously paired devices.
3. Press the thumb wheel on the steering wheel keypad or OK/MENU and select
Add phone.1

Select Change phone if the cell phone or device has already been paired with the infotainment system. If several phones or devices have already been paired, their names will also be displayed. Scroll to the device to be connected and press the thumb wheel on the steering wheel keypad or OK/MENU.

Making a call1. Ensure that is shown at the top of
the center console display and that the hands-free function is in telephone mode.
2. Dial the desired phone number using the center console keypad or use the speeddial function (see page 260). In normalview (see page see page 225 for informa-tion about the various display views), it isalso possible to turn TUNE clockwise to
access the phone book and then counter-clockwise for the call list. See page 261for more information about the phonebook.
3. Press the thumb wheel or OK/MENU.
End or reject a call by pressing EXIT.
Disconnecting the cell phoneThe cell phone is automatically disconnectedfrom the infotainment system if it is movedout of range. The cell phone can be manually disconnected from the hands-free system by pressing andholding TEL or in phone mode, going to
Phone menuDisconnect phone. See also
page 257 for more information about con- nections. The hands-free system is also deactivatedwhen the ignition is switched off (or if thedriver’s door is opened). When the cell phone is disconnected from the hands-free system, a call in progress can becontinued using the cell phone’s own speakerand microphone. Even if the cell phone has been disconnected manually, some phones may reconnect auto-matically, for example when a new call is initi-ated.
Removing a paired deviceA paired phone or device can be removedfrom the list. To do so:
1. Press
TEL.
2. Select

Bluetooth device.
Handling calls
Incoming calls–Press OK/MENU (or the thumb wheel on
the steering wheel keypad) to answer a call, even if the infotainment system is currently in another mode (e.g.,
RADIO orMEDIA).
Press EXIT to reject a call.
Auto answerThis function means that incoming calls will be answered automatically. Activate or deac-tivate the function in the menu system under

Call settingsWhile a call is in progress, press OK/MENU
or the thumb wheel on the steering wheel keypad to access the following functions:

Mute: mute the infotainment system’s
microphone.
•
Mobile phone: transfer the call from
hands-free to the cell phone. On certain cell phones, the connection will be bro-ken, which is normal. The hands-freefunction will ask if you would like toreconnect.
•
Dial number: dial a third party during an
ongoing call using the keypad (the current call will be put on hold).
Call listsCall lists are copied to the hands-free func- tion each time a cell phone is connected andthe lists are updated while the phone is con-nected. In normal view, turn TUNE counter-

Getting started

Activating the systemBefore any phone voice commands can be used, a Bluetooth ®
-enabled cell phone must
be paired with the infotainment system. If a phone command is given, the system willinform you If there is no cell phone paired.See page 254 for information on pairing a cellphone. Press the voice control button (1 in the illus- tration) to activate the system and initiate acommand dialogue. The system will displaycommonly used commands on the screenwhen the button has been pressed. While using the voice control system, keep the following points in mind: •
When giving commands, speak at your usual speed and in a normal tone of voiceafter the tone
• The vehicle's doors, windows and moon-roof should be closed when using thevoice control system
• Avoid background noises in the cabinwhen using the system
NOTE
If you are uncertain of the commands that you can use, saying "help" will prompt thesystem to provide a number of commandsthat can be used in a specific situation. Voice control commands can be cancelled by:
• Saying "cancel"
• Not speaking
• Pressing and holding the voice control button
• Pressing
EXIT or one of the mode but-

General information
Economical driving conserves natural
resources
Better driving economy may be obtained by thinking ahead, avoiding rapid starts andstops and adjusting the speed of your vehicleto immediate traffic conditions. Observe the following rules:
• Bring the engine to normal operating tem- perature as soon as possible by drivingwith a light foot on the accelerator pedalfor the first few minutes of operation. Acold engine uses more fuel and is subjectto increased wear.
• Whenever possible, avoid using the vehi-cle for driving short distances. This doesnot allow the engine to reach normaloperating temperature.
• Drive carefully and avoid rapid accelera-tion and hard braking.
• Use the transmission's Drive (
D) position
as often as possible and avoid using kick-down.
• Do not exceed posted speed limits.
• Avoid carrying unnecessary items (extraload) in the vehicle.
• Maintain correct tire pressure. Check tirepressure regularly (when tires are cold). •
Remove snow tires when threat of snowor ice has ended.
• Note that roof racks, ski racks, etc,increase air resistance and also fuel con-sumption.
• At highway driving speeds, fuel consump-tion will be lower with the air conditioningon and the windows closed than with theair conditioning off and the windowsopen.
• Using the onboard trip computer's fuelconsumption modes can help you learnhow to drive more economically.
Other factors that decrease gas mileage are: • Dirty air cleaner
• Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter
• Dragging brakes
• Incorrect front end alignment
Some of the above mentioned items and oth- ers are checked at the standard maintenanceintervals.
WARNING
Driving with the trunk open: Driving with
the trunk open could lead to poisonous exhaust gases entering the passengercompartment. If the trunk must be keptopen for any reason, proceed as follows:
• Close the windows
• Set the ventilation system control to air flow to floor, windshield and side win- dows and the blower control to itshighest setting.
Weight distribution affects handlingAt the specified curb weight your vehicle has a tendency to understeer, which means thatthe steering wheel has to be turned morethan might seem appropriate for the curva-ture of a bend. This ensures good stabilityand reduces the risk of rear wheel skid.Remember that these properties can alterwith the vehicle load. The heavier the load inthe trunk, the less the tendency to under-steer.
Handling, roadholdingVehicle load, tire design and inflation pres-sure all affect vehicle handling. Therefore,check that the tires are inflated to the recom-mended pressure according to the vehicleload. See the "Tire pressure" section. Loadsshould be distributed so that capacity weight

Before a long distance tripIt is always worthwhile to have your vehicle checked by a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician before driving long dis-tances. Your retailer will also be able to sup-ply you with bulbs, fuses, spark plugs andwiper blades for your use in the event thatproblems occur. As a minimum, the following items should be checked before any long trip:• Check that engine runs smoothly and that fuel consumption is normal.
• Check for fuel, oil, and fluid leakage
• Have the transmission oil level checked.
• Check condition of drive belts.
• Check state of the battery's charge.
• Examine tires carefully (the spare tire aswell), and replace those that are worn.Check tire pressures.
• The brakes, front wheel alignment, andsteering gear should be checked by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian only.
• Check all lights, including high beams.
• Reflective warning triangles are legallyrequired in some states/provinces.
• Have a word with a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician if you intend to drive in countries where it may be difficultto obtain the correct fuel.
• Consider your destination. If you will bedriving through an area where snow or iceare likely to occur, consider snow tires.
Cold weather precautionsIf you wish to check your vehicle before the approach of cold weather, the followingadvice is worth noting:
• Make sure that the engine coolant con- tains 50 percent antifreeze. Any othermixture will reduce freeze protection. Thisgives protection against freezing down to–31 °F (–35 °C). The use of "recycled"antifreeze is not approved by Volvo. Dif-ferent types of antifreeze must not bemixed.
• Volvo recommends using only genuineVolvo antifreeze in your vehicle's radiator.
• Try to keep the fuel tank well filled – thishelps prevent the formation of condensa-tion in the tank. In addition, in extremelycold weather conditions it is worthwhileto add fuel line de-icer before refueling.
• The viscosity of the engine oil is impor-tant. Oil with low viscosity (thinner oil)improves cold-weather starting as well asdecreasing fuel consumption while theengine is warming up. Full synthetic0W-30 oil is recommended for driving inareas with sustained low temperatures. •
The load placed on the battery is greaterduring the winter since the windshieldwipers, lighting, etc., are used moreoften. Moreover, the capacity of the bat-tery decreases as the temperature drops.In very cold weather, a poorly chargedbattery can freeze and be damaged. It istherefore advisable to check the state ofcharge more frequently and spray an anti-rust oil on the battery posts.
• Volvo recommends the use of snow tireson all four wheels for winter driving, seepage 300.
• To prevent the washer fluid reservoir fromfreezing, add washer solvents containingantifreeze. This is important since dirt isoften splashed on the windshield duringwinter driving, requiring the frequent useof the washers and wipers. Volvo WasherSolvent should be diluted as follows:Down to 14 °F (–10 °C): 1 part washersolvent and 4 parts water Down to 5 °F(–15 °C): 1 part washer solvent and3 parts water Down to 0 °F (–18 °C):1 part washer solvent and 2 parts waterDown to –18 °F (–28 °C): 1 part washersolvent and 1 part water.
• Use Volvo Teflon Lock Spray in the locks.
• Avoid using de-icing sprays as they cancause damage to the locks.

Always follow the trailer manufactur-er's recommendations for wheelchocking.
• When starting on a hill, put the gearselector in
D before releasing the park-
ing brake. See also page 131 for moredetailed information about starting offon a hill while towing a trailer.
• If you use the manual (Geartronic) shiftpositions while towing a trailer, makesure the gear you select does not puttoo much strain on the engine (usingtoo high a gear).
• The drawbar assembly/trailer hitchmay be rated for trailers heavier thanthe vehicle is designed to tow. Pleaseadhere to Volvo's recommended trailerweights.
• Avoid driving with a trailer on inclinesof more than 15%.
Trailer cableAn adapter is required if the vehicle's trailer hitch has a 13-pin connector and the trailerhas 7 pins. Use an adapter cable approved by Volvo. Make sure the cable does not dragon the ground.
Trailer Stability Assist (TSA)
Trailer Stability Assist is a system designed to help stabilize a vehicle that is towing a trailerwhen the vehicle and trailer have begun tosway and is part of the Dynamic Stability andTraction Control system (DSTC). See page136 for information on DSTC.
FunctionA vehicle towing a trailer may begin to swayfor various reasons. Normally this only occursat high speeds but, for example, if the traileris overloaded or if the load is unevenly dis-tributed in the trailer, there is risk of swayingat speeds between approximately 45-55 mph(70-90 km/h). Swaying may be caused by factors such as: •
The vehicle and trailer are hit by a sud- den, strong crosswind
• The vehicle and trailer are traveling on anuneven road surface or drive over a bump
• Sudden movements of the steering wheel
Facts about TSA
•
TSA intervenes at speeds above approxi-mately 40 mph (60 km/h)
• The DSTC symbol (
) in the instru-
ment panel will flash when TSA is working
• If the driver switches off the DSTC sys- tem's Spin Control function, TSA will alsobe switched off (but will be on again thenext time the engine is started)
• TSA may not intervene when the vehicleand trailer begin to sway if the driver triesto compensate for the swaying motion bymoving the steering wheel rapidly
How TSA worksOnce swaying has begun, it can be very diffi- cult to stop, which makes it difficult to controlthe vehicle and trailer. The TSA system continuously monitors the vehicle's movements, particularly lateralmovement. If the system detects a tendencyto sway, the brakes are applied individuallyon the front wheels, which has a stabilizingeffect on the vehicle and trailer. This is oftenenough to enable the driver to regain controlof the vehicle. If this is not adequate to stop the swaying motion, the brakes are applied to all of thewheels on the vehicle and on the trailer if it isequipped with brakes, and engine power is

Attaching the towing eyelet
Attaching the towing eyeletThe towing eyelet is located under the floor of the trunk, with the spare tire. Thiseyelet must be screwed into the positionsprovided on the right sides of either thefront or rear bumper (see illustration).
There are two different types of covers over the openings for the towing eyeletand they have to be opened differently.
• If the cover has a notch, insert a coin, etc., into the notch and pry open theedge of the cover. Open the covercompletely and remove it.
• If the cover has a mark along one edgeor in a corner, press the mark whileprying out the opposite side/cornerusing a coin, etc. Open the cover andremove it.
Screw the towing eyelet in place, first by hand and then using the tire iron until it issecurely in place. After the vehicle has been towed, the eyelet should be removed and returned to its stor-age location. Press the cover for the attachment point back into position.WARNING
• When the vehicle is being towed, the ignition should be in mode
II (in mode
I , all of the vehicle's airbags are deac-
tivated). See page 85 for more infor-mation about ignition modes.
• Never remove the remote key from theignition slot when the vehicle is beingtowed. For vehicles with keyless drive,the remote key must remain inside thevehicle.
• The power brakes and power steeringwill not function when the engine is notrunning. Approximately 5 times morepressure will be required on the brakepedal and the steering wheel will beconsiderably harder to turn.
• The towing eyelets must not be usedfor pulling the vehicle out of a ditch orfor any similar purpose involvingsevere strain.
