When the remote key is placed in the backup reader, make sure that no othervehicle keys, metal objects or electronicdevices (e.g. cellular phones, tablets, lap-tops or chargers) are in the backup reader.Multiple vehicle keys close to each other inthe backup reader can disrupt their func-tionality.
CAUTION

Always put the gear selector in
P and
apply the parking brake before leavingthe vehicle. Never leave the vehicleunsupervised while the engine is run-ning.
Always open the garage door fully andmake sure that ventilation is very goodbefore starting the engine in a garage.The exhaust fumes produced by thevehicle contain carbon monoxide,which is invisible and odorless but verytoxic.
CAUTION
When starting in cold weather, the automatic transmission may shift up atslightly higher engine speeds than nor-mal until the automatic transmissionfluid reaches normal operating tem-perature.
Do not race a cold engine immediatelyafter starting. This could prevent fluidsfrom properly lubricating vital compo-nents in the engine before it hasreached the proper operating tempera-ture.
The engine should be idling when thegear selector is moved. Never acceler-ate until the gear is fully engaged.Accelerating rapidly before a gear isproperly engaged could lead to harderwear of components.
To help prevent the transmission oilfrom overheating, select
P or N when
idling at a standstill for prolonged peri-ods of time.

Parking on a hillAlways use the parking brake when parking on a hill.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when park- ing on an incline. Selecting a gear or put-ting the automatic transmission in P may
not be sufficient to keep the vehicle sta-tionary in all situations.
If the vehicle is pointing uphill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointing away from
the curb.
If the vehicle is pointing downhill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointingtoward
the curb.
Heavy load uphill
Heavy loads, such as a trailer, could cause the vehicle to roll backward when the parkingbrake is released automatically on steep uphillgradients. To help avoid this, pull the controlupward while you are driving away. Releasethe control when the vehicle gains traction.

Parking brake malfunction
If you are unable to deactivate or activate the parking brake after several attempts, contactan authorized Volvo workshop.
A audible warning signal will sound if the park- ing brake is activated while the vehicle isbeing driven. If the vehicle must be parked before the prob- lem is rectified, turn the wheels as when park-ing on an incline and put the gear selector inP .
Low battery charge levelIf the battery charge level is too low, it will notbe possible to activate or deactivate the park-ing brake. Connect an auxiliary battery to thevehicle if the battery is discharged.
Replacing brake padsDue to the design of the electric parkingbrake, the rear brake pads must be replacedby a workshop. An authorized Volvo workshopis recommended.

For vehicles with the small gear selector, the system will shift to P automatically
if the ignition is switched off while
D or R
is selected.
if the driver unbuckles the seat belt andopens the driver's door while the vehicle isrunning with the gear selector in a gearother than
P.
To park a vehicle with an unbuckled seat beltand open door – end P mode by shifting to R
or D again.
The system will not automatically shift to P if
the ignition is switched off while the gearselector is in the neutral position (N). This is tomake it possible to wash the vehicle in anautomatic car wash in which the vehicle ispulled forward on rolling wheels.
Reverse - R
Select R when backing up. The vehicle must
be stationary when Reverse is selected.
Neutral - N
No gear is selected and the engine can be started. Apply the parking brake if the vehicleis stationary with the gear selector in N.
To move the gear selector from N to another
gear, the brake pedal must be depressed andthe ignition in mode II. For vehicles with the small gear selector, the engine must be run-ning.
D
drive mode
D is the normal driving gear position. The
transmission shifts up or down automatically depending on acceleration and speed. The vehicle must be stationary when the gear selector is moved from R to D.
Manual shifting mode - M

Manual shifting mode can be selected at any time during a drive. Engine braking will occurwhen the accelerator pedal is released. Select manual shifting mode by moving the gear selector sideways from D to ±. The cur- rent gear will be displayed in the instrumentpanel.

Pull the gear selector backward toward

The steering wheel paddles are a supplement to the gear selector and make it possible toshift manually without removing your handsfrom the steering wheel.

Activating the steering wheel paddlesIn order to shift gears using the paddles, they must first be activated:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steer- ing wheel.

ChangeTo shift one gear:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steer- ing wheel and then release.
As long as the engine speed (rpm) is withinthe permissible range for the selected gear, agear shift will take place each time a paddle ispulled. After each gear shift, a number indicat-ing the current gear will be displayed in theinstrument panel.
Turning off Start/Stop
Manual deactivation in gear D and M
–Deactivate the paddles by pulling the right paddle ( +) toward the steering wheel and
holding it until the number of the currentgear is no longer displayed in the instru-ment panel.
> The transmission will return to gear selector position D.
On vehicles with the large gear selector, the function can only be switched off in gearselector position D.
Automatic deactivation
In gear position D, the steering wheel paddles
are deactivated after a short period of time if they are not used. The number of the currentgear will no longer be displayed in the instru-ment panel. If engine braking is currentlybeing used, the paddles will remain activeuntil engine braking stops. In gear position
M, the paddles will not acti-
vate automatically.

Stop the vehicle by applying the brakes and keep the brake pedal depressed. Theengine will auto-stop.
In
Comfort or Eco drive mode, the engine
may auto-stop before the vehicle has com- pletely stopped. With Adaptive Cruise Control or Pilot Assist activated, the engine will auto-stop aboutthree seconds after the vehicle has stopped.
Auto-startThe following conditions must be met for theengine to auto-start.
Release the brake pedal. The engine willauto-start and the vehicle can be driven.On an uphill gradient, Hill Start Assist (HSA 12
) will activate to help prevent the
vehicle from rolling backward.
When the Auto-hold function is activated, auto-start will be delayed until the acceler-ator is pressed.
When Adaptive Cruise Control or PilotAssist are activated, the engine will auto- start when the accelerator pedal is depressed or the
button on the left-
side steering wheel keypad is pressed.
Maintain pressure on the brake pedal and press the accelerator pedal. The enginewill auto-start.
On a downhill gradient: Release the brakepedal slightly so that the vehicle begins toroll. The engine will auto-start after a slightincrease in speed.

The symbol will be displayed in
the tachometer when the function is avail- able.
An indicator in the tachometer will point toward
when Start/Stop is active
and the engine has auto-stopped.
The
symbol will be grayed-out
when the function is not available.
No symbol will be shown when the func- tion is turned off.

Slippery driving conditionsTo help optimize traction and roadholding, Volvo recommends using snow tires on allwheels whenever there is a risk of snow or iceon the road.

Driving through standing water
It may be necessary to drive the vehicle through standing water, e.g. deep puddles orflooding on the road. This must be done withgreat caution.
The vehicle can be driven through water up to a depth of 25 cm (9 in) at no more than walk-ing speed. Be particularly careful when drivingthrough flowing water. When driving through standing water, drive slowly and do not stop the vehicle. When youhave passed the water, press lightly on thebrake pedal and check that the brakes arefunctioning properly. Water, mud, slush, etc.can make the brake linings slippery, resultingin delayed braking effect. If the vehicle is equipped with contacts for an electric heater or trailer coupling, cleanthese after driving in water or mud.
Do not allow the vehicle to stand in waterup to the sills any longer than absolutelynecessary. This could result in electricalmalfunctions.
CAUTION
Engine damage could occur if water enters the air cleaner.
If water enters the transmission, thelubricating ability of the oils is reducedand the service life of these systems isshortened.
Damage to any component, engine,transmission, turbocharger, differentialor its internal components caused byflooding, vapor lock or insufficient oil isnot covered under warranty.
If the engine stalls while the vehicle isin water, do not attempt to restart it.Have the vehicle towed out of thewater to a workshop. An authorizedVolvo workshop is recommended. Riskof engine failure.
CAUTION
Because it can be difficult to determine the water depth, Volvo recommends not driv-ing through standing or running water. Thedriver is always responsible for operatingthe vehicle in a safe manner and adheringto all applicable laws and regulations.

2. Insert the funnel into the fuel filler pipe's
opening. There are two flaps just inside the fuel filler pipe and the tube section ofthe funnel must push both of these flapsopen before fuel can be added.

Volvo recommends the use of detergent gas- oline to control engine deposits.
Deposit control gasoline (gasoline with detergent additives)
Detergent gasoline is effective in keeping injectors and intake valves clean. Consistentuse of deposit control gasolines will helpensure good driveability and fuel economy. Ifyou are not sure whether the gasoline containsdeposit control additives, check with the serv-ice station operator.
NOTE
Volvo recommends not using external fuel injector cleaning systems, e.g. do not adddetergent additives to gasoline before orafter refueling.
Unleaded fuelAll Volvo vehicles have a three-way catalytic converter and must only use unleaded gaso-line. US and Canadian regulations require thatpumps delivering unleaded gasoline arelabeled "UNLEADED". Only the nozzles ofthese pumps will fit in your vehicle's fuel fillerinlet. It is unlawful to dispense leaded fuel intoa vehicle labeled "unleaded gasoline only".Leaded gasoline damages the three-way cata-lytic converter and the heated oxygen sensor system. Repeated use of leaded gasoline willlessen the effectiveness of the emission con-trol system and could result in loss of emissionwarranty coverage. State and local vehicleinspection programs will make detection ofmisfueling easier, possibly resulting in emis-sion test failure for misfueled vehicles.
NOTE
Some U.S. and Canadian gasolines contain an octane enhancing additive calledmethyl-cyclopentadienyl manganese tricar-bonyl (MMT). If such fuels are used, yourEmission Control System performancemay be affected, and the Check EngineLight (malfunction indicator light) locatedon your instrument panel may light. If thisoccurs, please return your vehicle to atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian for service.
Gasoline containing alcohol and ethers, "Oxygenated fuels"
Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing "oxygenates" which are usually alcohols orethers. In some areas, state or local lawsrequire that the service pump be marked indi-cating use of alcohols or ethers. However,there are areas in which the pumps areunmarked. If you are not sure whether there isalcohol or ethers in the gasoline you buy,check with the service station operator. To

Fuel FormulationsDo not use gasoline that contains lead or man- ganese as a knock inhibitor, and do not uselead additives. Besides damaging the exhaustemission control systems on your vehicle, leadhas been strongly linked to certain forms ofcancer. Many fuels contain benzene as a solvent. Unburned benzene has been strongly linked tocertain forms of cancer. If you live in an areawhere you must fill your own gas tank, takeprecautions. These may include: standing upwind away from the filler noz-zle while refueling
refueling only at gas stations with vaporrecovery systems that fully seal the mouthof the filler neck during refueling
wearing neoprene gloves while handling afuel filler nozzle.
Use of AdditivesWith the exception of gas line antifreeze dur-ing winter months, do not add solvents, thick-eners, or other store-bought additives to yourvehicle's fuel, cooling, or lubricating systems.Overuse may damage your engine, and someof these additives contain organically volatilechemicals. Do not needlessly expose yourselfto these chemicals.
WARNING
Never carry a cell phone that is
switched
on while refueling your vehicle. If the
phone rings, this may cause a spark that could ignite gasoline fumes, resulting in fireand injury.
WARNING
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless, and odorless gas. It is present in all exhaustgases. If you ever smell exhaust fumesinside the vehicle, make sure the passengercompartment is ventilated, and immedi-ately return the vehicle to a trained andqualified Volvo service technician for cor-rection.
Demanding drivingIn demanding driving conditions, such as when towing a trailer or driving in hot weather or for prolonged periods at high altitudes, it may be a good idea to switch to a higher- octane fuel (AKI

91 or higher) or to switch to
another brand of gasoline in order to fully uti- lize the vehicle's engine capacity and optimizetraction.
