Occupant safety reminders
How safely you drive doesn't depend on how oldyou are but rather on:
How well you see.
Your ability to concentrate.
How quickly you make decisions understress to avoid an accident.
The following suggestions are intended to helpyou cope with the ever changing traffic environ-ment.
Never drink and drive.
If you are taking any medication, consult yourphysician about its potential effects on yourdriving abilities.
Take a driver-retraining course.
Have your eyes checked regularly.
Keep your windshield and headlights clean.
Replace wiper blades when they start toleave streaks.
Take into account the traffic, road, andweather conditions, particularly with regard tostopping distance.
Never send text messages while driving.
Refrain from using or minimize the use of acell phone while driving.

The following information will help you report anyperceived safety-related defects in your vehicle.
Reporting safety defects in the U.S.
If you believe that your vehicle has a
defect which could cause a crash or
could cause injury or death, you should
immediately inform the National High-
way Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) in addition to notifying Volvo
Car USA, LLC. If NHTSA receives simi-
lar complaints, it may open an investi-
gation, and if it finds that a safety
defect exists in a group of vehicles, it
may order a recall and remedy cam-
paign. However, NHTSA cannot
become involved in individual problems
between you, your retailer, or Volvo Car

With the steering wheel lever's lighting ring in the
position, the daytime running lights (DRL1)will illuminate when the vehicle is driven in day-light conditions. The headlights will switch auto-matically from daytime running lights to lowbeams in weak daylight or dark conditions. Theheadlights will also switch to low beams if thefront fog lights* and/or rear fog light are acti-vated.
US models: When mode is selected, thedaytime running lights can be deactivated in thecenter display. The parking lights will also bedeactivated. In weak daylight or dark conditions,the parking lights and low beams will be illumi-nated.
US models: With the lighting ring in the
or position, the daytime running lights willbe off.
Canadian models: With the lighting ring in the
or position, the daytime runninglights will be on.
NOTE
Volvo recommends use of Daytime RunningLights in the US. Its use is mandatory in Can-ada.
WARNING
The system is an energy saving aid – it cannotin all situations determine when the daylight istoo weak or not strong enough, e.g. whenthere is fog or rain.
The driver is always responsible for driving thevehicle with lighting that is safe for the trafficconditions and as specified by applicable traf-fic regulations.

Low beams
When driving with the lighting ring in the position, low beam will be automatically acti-vated in weak daylight or dark conditions, whenthe ignition is in the II position.
Lighting ring in AUTO position.
With the lighting ring in the position, thelow beams will also be automatically activated ifthe rear fog light is activated.
With the lighting ring in the position, lowbeams will always be on when the ignition is inthe II position.

Active high beam
Active high beams is a function that uses cam-era sensors in the upper edge of the windshieldto detect the headlights of approaching vehiclesor the taillights of the vehicle directly ahead.When either of these is detected, the vehicle'sheadlights will automatically switch from highbeams to low beams.
Active high beam is enabled by moving the lighting ring
on the steering wheel lever to .
The function can also detect street lighting.When the camera sensor no longer detects anapproaching vehicle or a vehicle ahead, the head-lights will return to high beams.
This function can be used in dark conditionswhen the vehicle's speed is approx. 20 km/h(approx. 12 mph) or higher.
If active high beams are deactivated when thehigh beams are on, the headlights will automati-cally switch to low beams.
When active high beams are activated, a white
symbol will be displayed in the instrumentpanel.
When high beams are on, the symbol will be blue.For LED headlights, this applies even if the highbeams are partially dimmed, i.e. if the headlightsare illuminated with slightly more than low beams.
Vehicles with LED 3
headlights *
If the active high beams are equipped with the
auto on/off function4, the headlights will return tohigh beams a second or so after the camera sen-sor no longer detects the headlights of approach-ing vehicles or the taillights of a vehicle ahead.
Limitations for active high beams
The camera sensor on which the function isbased has limitations.
If this symbol and the message ActiveHigh Beam Temporarilyunavailable is displayed in the instru-ment panel, switching between highand low beams must be done manually. The light-ing ring on the steering wheel lever can remain in
the position. The symbol will go outwhen the message is displayed.
The same applies if this symbol alongwith the message Windscreensensor Sensor blocked, seeOwner's manual is displayed.
Active high beams may be temporarily unavailablein certain situations, e.g. heavy fog or rain. Whenactive high beams become available again, or thewindshield sensors are no longer blocked, the
message will disappear and the symbol willbe displayed.
WARNING
Automatic high beam is an aid in using thebest possible light based on prevailing condi-tions.
The driver is always responsible for manuallyswitching between high and low beam whentraffic situations or weather conditions requirethis.

Active Bending Lights*
Active Bending Lights (ABL) are designed tohelp provide maximum illumination in curves andintersections. Depending on equipment level,
vehicles with LED5 headlights* may be equippedwith Active Bending Lights.

Active Bending Lights follow the movement ofthe steering wheel to help provide maximum illu-mination in curves and intersections, helping toimprove visibility for the driver.
The function is automatically activated when theengine is started. If a fault is detected in the sys-
tem, the symbol will illuminate in theinstrument panel and a message will be dis-played.
The function is only active in weak daylight ordark conditions and only when the vehicle is mov-ing and the low beams are on.
Deactivating/activating the function
The function is activated as the default factorysetting and can be activated and deactivated inthe center display's Function view:
Tap the Active BendingLights button.

Rear fog light
The rear fog light is considerably brighter thanordinary taillights and should only be used tohelp other road users see the vehicle when visi-bility is reduced by conditions such as fog,snow, smoke or dust.
Rear fog light button.
The rear fog light consists of a light on the rearof the vehicle on the driver's side.
The rear fog light can only be switched on whenthe ignition is in II mode and the lighting ring is in
position or .
Press the button for On/Off. The symbol inthe instrument panel illuminates when the rearfog light is on.

Adjusting the rearview mirrordimming function
Bright light entering the vehicle from behind, e.g.from the headlights of following vehicles, couldreflect in the rearview mirror and door mirrorsand cause a glare. Use the dimming functionwhen light from behind is distracting.
Auto-dim
If bright light enters the vehicle from behind, thedoor mirrors will automatically dim. Auto-dim isalways active when the engine is running, exceptwhen reverse gear is engaged.
NOTE
Adjustments to the sensitivity level will not benoticeable immediately but will instead takeeffect after a short period of time.
The sensitivity level for dimming will affect boththe rearview mirror and door mirrors.
To change the dimming sensitivity level:
1.Tap Settings in the Top view in the centerdisplay.
2.Tap My CarMirrors and Convenience.
3.Under Rearview Mirror Auto Dimming,select Normal, Dark or Light.
The rearview mirror instead has two sensors -one pointing forward and one pointing rearward -
which work together to identify and eliminateglare. The forward-pointing sensor monitorsambient light, while the rearward-pointing sensormonitors light from the headlights of followingvehicles.
For the door mirrors to be equipped with auto-dim, the rearview mirror must also be equippedwith auto-dim.
NOTE
If the sensors are obstructed by e.g. a parkingpermit, transponder, sunshade or objects onthe seats or parcel shelf in a way that pre-vents light from reaching the sensors, theauto-dim function in the rearview and doormirrors will be reduced.

Using the windshield and headlightwashers
The windshield and headlight washers clean thewindshield and headlights. Use the right-sidesteering wheel lever to start the windshield andheadlight washers.
Starting the windshield and headlight
washers
Washing function, right-hand steering wheel lever.
–Move the right-hand steering wheel levertoward the steering wheel to start the wind-shield and headlight washers.
> After the lever is released, the wipersmake several extra sweeps.
CAUTION
Avoid activating the washer system when it isfrozen or the fluid reservoir is empty. Other-wise, there is a risk of damaging the pump.
Headlight washer *
To save washer fluid, the headlights are washedautomatically according to a defined intervalwhen the headlights are on.
Reduced washing
When there is about 1 liter (1 qt) of washer fluidleft in the reservoir and the Washer fluid Levellow, refill message is displayed in the instrument
panel together with the symbol, the washerfluid supply to the headlights is cut off. This is toprioritize windshield cleaning and visibilitythrough it. The headlights are only washed if highor low beam is on.

The Late warning distance setting should there-fore only be used in exceptional cases, such aswhen a more dynamic driving style is preferred.
WARNING
No automatic system can guarantee100% correct function in all situations.You should therefore never test use ofCity Safety in the direction of people, ani-mals or vehicles – this could lead tosevere damage, serious personal injury oreven death.
City Safety warns the driver if there is arisk of collision, but the function cannotreduce the driver's reaction time.
Even if the warning distance has been setto Early, warnings may be perceived aslate in certain situations – e.g. when thereare large speed differences or if the vehi-cle ahead suddenly brakes heavily.
With the warning distance set to Early,warnings come further in advance. Thismay cause the warnings to come morefrequently than with warning distanceNormal, but is recommended since it canmake City Safety more effective.
NOTE
The warning with direction indicators for RearCollision Warning is deactivated if the colli-sion warning distance in the City Safety func-tion is set to the lowest level "Late".
The seat belt tensioning and braking func-tions remain active.

Detecting obstacles with City Safety
City Safety can help detect vehicles, cyclists,large animals and pedestrians.
Vehicles
City Safety detects most types of vehicles thatare either stationary, moving in the same direc-tion as your vehicle or those described in “CitySafety in crossing traffic” and City Safety brakingfor oncoming vehicles”.
For City Safety to be able to detect a vehicle inthe dark, its headlights and taillights must be onand clearly visible.
Cyclists
Optimal examples of what City Safety would interpret tobe a cyclist: clear body and bicycle shapes.
For optimal performance, the system's functionfor cyclist detection needs the clearest possibleinformation about the contours of the bicycle and

of the cyclist's head, arm, shoulders, legs, torsoand lower body in combination with normalhuman movements.
If large portions of the cyclist's body or the bicy-cle itself are not visible to the function's camera,it will not be able to detect a cyclist.
The system can only detect adult cyclists ridingon bicycles intended for adults.
WARNING
City Safety is supplementary driver support,but it cannot detect all cyclists in all situationsand, for example, cannot see:
partially obscured cyclists.
cyclists if the background contrast of thecyclist is poor - warning and brake inter-ventions may then be late or not occur atall.
cyclists in clothing that hides their bodycontour.
bikes loaded with large objects.
The driver is always responsible for ensuringthat the vehicle is driven correctly and with asafety distance suitable for the speed.
Pedestrians
Optimal examples of what the system considers to be apedestrian: clear body contours.
For optimal performance, the system's functionfor pedestrian detection needs the clearest pos-sible information about body and bicycle con-tours. This entails being able to detect the con-tours of the pedestrian's head, arm, shoulders,legs, torso and lower body in combination withnormal human movements.
In order to detect a pedestrian, there must be acontrast to the background, which could dependon clothing, weather conditions, etc. If there is lit-tle contrast, the person may be detected late ornot at all, which may result in a delayed reactionfrom the system or no reaction at all.
City Safety can detect pedestrians even in darkconditions if they are illuminated by the vehicle'sheadlights.
WARNING
City Safety is supplementary driver support,but it cannot detect all pedestrians in all sit-uations and, for example, cannot see:
partially obscured pedestrians, people inclothing that hides their body contour orpedestrians shorter than 80 cm (32 in.).
pedestrians if the background contrast ofthe pedestrians is poor - warning andbrake interventions may then be late ornot occur at all.
pedestrians who are carrying largeobjects.
The driver is always responsible for ensuringthat the vehicle is driven correctly and with asafety distance suitable for the speed.

Large animals
Optimal examples of what City Safety would interpret asa large animal: stationary or moving slowly and with clearbody contours.
For optimal performance, the system's functionfor detecting large animals (e.g. moose, horses,etc.) needs the clearest possible informationabout body contours. This entails being able todetect the animal straight from the side in combi-nation with normal movements for that animal.
If parts of the animal's body are not visible to thefunction's camera, the system will not be able todetect the animal.
City Safety can detect large animals even in darkconditions if they are illuminated by the vehicle'sheadlights.
WARNING
City Safety is supplementary driver support,but it cannot detect all large animals in all sit-uations and, for example, cannot see:
partially obscured larger animals.
larger animals seen from the front or frombehind.
running or fast moving larger animals.
larger animals if the contrast of the ani-mal's background is poor - warning andbrake interventions may then occur lateor not at all.
smaller animals such as cats and dogs.
The driver is always responsible for ensuringthat the vehicle is driven correctly and with asafety distance suitable for the speed.

City Safety in crossing traffic
City Safety can assist the driver when turning inthe path of an oncoming vehicle in an intersec-tion.
: Sector in which City Safety can detect an oncomingvehicle in crossing traffic.
In order for City Safety to detect an oncomingvehicle in situations where there is a risk of a col-lision, that vehicle must be within the sector inwhich City Safety can analyze the situation.
The following criteria must also be met:
your vehicle's speed must be at least 4 km/h(3 mph)
your vehicle must be making a left turn
the oncoming vehicle's headlights must beon

WARNING
The "City Safety in crossing traffic" func-tion is supplementary driver supportintended to improve driving safety – itcannot handle all situations in all traffic,weather and road conditions.
Warnings and brake interventions due toa collision risk with an oncoming vehicleoften come very late.
Never wait for a collision warning or forCity Safety to intervene.
City Safety is not a substitute for the driv-er's attention and judgment. The driver isalways responsible for ensuring the vehi-cle is driven in a safe manner, at theappropriate speed, with an appropriatedistance to other vehicles, and in accord-ance with current traffic rules and regula-tions.

Limitations of City Safety incrossing traffic
In certain situations, it may be difficult for CitySafety to help the driver avoid a collision withcrossing traffic.
For example:
on slippery roads when Electronic StabilityControl (ESC) is actively operating
if an approaching vehicle is detected at a latestage
if the oncoming vehicle is partially obstructedby another vehicle or object
if the oncoming vehicle's headlights are off
if the oncoming vehicle is moving erraticallyand e.g. suddenly changes lanes at a latestage.
NOTE
The function uses the vehicle's combinedcamera and radar unit, which has certain gen-eral limitations; see sections "Camera limita-tions" and "Radar sensor limitations".
