ShiftlockWhen your vehicle is parked, the gear selector is locked in the P (Park) position. To release the selector from this position, the ignition must be inmode
II (p. 82) or the engine must be running.
Depress the brake pedal, press the button on the front side of the gear selector and move the selector from P (Park).
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)The ABS system performs a brief self-diagnostic test when the engine has been started and driverreleases the brake pedal. Another automatic testmay be performed when the vehicle first reachesa speed of approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). Thebrake pedal will pulsate several times and asound may be audible from the ABS controlmodule. This is normal.
Fuel filler doorPress the button on the light switch panel (seethe illustration in Refueling – opening/closingfuel filler door (p. 289)) when the vehicle is at astandstill to unlock the fuel filler door. It willrelock when closed and there will be an audibleclick.
Points to keep in mind
• Do not export your Volvo to another countrybefore investigating that country's applicablesafety and exhaust emission requirements. Insome cases it may be difficult or impossibleto comply with these requirements. Modifica-tions to the emission control system(s) mayrender your Volvo not certifiable for legal

Engine temperature
Engine overheating can result from low oil or coolant levels, towing or hard driving at high heatand altitude, or mechanical malfunction. Engineoverheating will be signaled with text and a redwarning triangle in the middle of the instrumentdisplay. The exact text will depend on the degree of overheating. It may range from

Fault in brake system
If this symbol lights, the brake fluid level may be too low. Stop the vehicle in a safe place andcheck the level in the brake fluid reservoir, seeEngine compartment – brake fluid (p. 343). If the level in the reservoir is below MIN, the vehicle
should be transported to an authorized Volvo workshop to have the brake system checked. If the

2. Restart the engine.

Warning symbol
The red warning symbol lights up to indicate a problem related to safety and/or drivability. Amessage will also appear in the instrument panel.The symbol remains visible until the fault hasbeen rectified but the text message can be cleared with the OK button, see Information dis-
play – menu controls (p. 116). The warning sym- bol can also come on in conjunction with othersymbols. Action:
1. Stop in a safe place. Do not drive the vehicle further.
2. Read the information on the display. Imple- ment the action in accordance with the mes- sage in the display. Clear the message using OK.

WARNING
•Always remove the remote key from the ignition slot when leaving the vehicle and ensure that the ignition in mode
0 (see
Ignition modes (p. 82) for information about the ignition modes).
• On vehicles with the optional keylessdrive, never remove the remote key fromthe vehicle while it is being driven ortowed.
• Always place the gear selector in Parkand apply the parking brake before leav-ing the vehicle. Never leave the vehicleunattended with the engine running.
• Always open garage doors fully beforestarting the engine inside a garage toensure adequate ventilation. The exhaustgases contain carbon monoxide, which isinvisible and odorless but very poisonous.
NOTE
•
After a cold start, idle speed may be noticeably higher than normal for a shortperiod. This is done to help bring compo-nents in the emission control system totheir normal operating temperature asquickly as possible, which enables themto control emissions and help reduce the vehicle's impact on the environment 3
.
CAUTION
• When starting in cold weather, the auto- matic transmission may shift up at slightlyhigher engine speeds than normal untilthe automatic transmission fluid reachesnormal operating temperature.
• Do not race a cold engine immediatelyafter starting. Oil flow may not reachsome lubrication points fast enough toprevent engine damage.
• The engine should be idling when youmove the gear selector. Never accelerateuntil after you feel the transmissionengage. Accelerating immediately afterselecting a gear will cause harsh engage-ment and premature transmission wear.
• Selecting
P or N when idling at a stand-
still for prolonged periods of time will helpprevent overheating of the automatictransmission fluid.

Brakes – general The brake system is a hydraulic system consist- ing of two separate brake circuits. If a problemshould occur in one of these circuits, it is stillpossible to stop the vehicle with the other brakecircuit.
If the brake pedal must be depressed farther than normal and requires greater foot pressure,the stopping distance will be longer. A warning light in the instrument panel will light up to warn the driver that a fault has occurred. If this light comes on while driving or braking, stop immediately and check the brake fluid levelin the reservoir.
NOTE
Press the brake pedal hard and maintain pressure on the pedal – do not pump thebrakes.
WARNING
If the fluid level is below the MIN mark in the
reservoir or if a brake system message is shown in the information display: DO NOT
DRIVE . Have the vehicle towed to a trained
and qualified Volvo service technician and have the brake system inspected.
Brake pad inspection
On vehicles equipped with a jack *, the condition
of the brake pads can be checked by raising the vehicle (see Changing a wheel – removing wheel(p. 303) for information about using the jack andremoving a wheel) and performing a visualinspection of the brake pads.
WARNING
• If the vehicle has been driven immediately prior to a brake pad inspection, the wheelhub, brake components, etc., will be veryhot. Allow time for these components tocool before carrying out the inspection.
• Apply the parking brake and put the gear selector in the Park (
P) position.
• Block the wheels standing on the ground, use rigid wooden blocks or large stones.
WARNING
• Use the jack intended for the vehicle when changing a tire. For any other job,use stands to support the vehicle.
• The jack should be kept well-greased andclean, and should not be damaged.
• Be sure the jack is on a firm, level, non-slippery surface.
• No objects should be placed between thebase of jack and the ground, or betweenthe jack and the attachment bar on thevehicle.
• The jack must correctly engage the jackattachment.
• Never allow any part of your body to beextended under a vehicle supported by ajack.
Power brakes function only when the engine is running
The power brakes utilize vacuum pressure which is only created when the engine is running. Neverlet the vehicle roll to a stop with the engineswitched off. If the power brakes are not working, considerably higher pressure will be required on the brakepedal to compensate for the lack of power assis-tance. This can happen for example when towingyour vehicle or if the engine is switched off when

278the vehicle is rolling. The brake pedal feels harder than usual.
Water on brake discs and brake pads
affects braking
Driving in rain and slush or passing through anautomatic car wash can cause water to collect onthe brake discs and pads. This will cause a delayin braking effect when the pedal is depressed. Toavoid such a delay when the brakes are needed,depress the pedal occasionally when drivingthrough rain, slush, etc. This will remove the waterfrom the brakes. Check that brake applicationfeels normal. This should also be done afterwashing or starting in very damp or cold weather.
Severe strain on the brake systemThe brakes will be subject to severe strain whendriving in mountains or hilly areas, or when towinga trailer. Vehicle speed is usually slower, whichmeans that the cooling of the brakes is less effi-cient than when driving on level roads. To reducethe strain on the brakes, shift into a lower gearand let the engine help with the braking. Do notforget that if you are towing a trailer, the brakeswill be subjected to a greater than normal load.
Cleaning the brake discsCoatings of dirt and water on the brake discsmay result in delayed brake function. This delay isminimized by cleaning the brake linings. Cleaning the brake pads is advisable in wet weather, prior to long-term parking, and after the vehicle has been washed. Do this by braking gen-tly for a short period while the vehicle is moving.

Conserving electrical current
Keep the following in mind to help minimize bat- tery drain:
• When the engine is not running, avoid using ignition mode
II. Many electrical systems (the
audio system, the optional navigation system, power windows, etc) will function in ignition modes 0 and I. These modes reduce drain
on the battery.
• Please keep in mind that using systems, accessories, etc., that consume a great dealof current when the engine is not runningcould result in the battery being completelydrained. Driving or having the engine runningfor approximately 15 minutes will help keepthe battery charged.
• The optional 12-volt socket in the cargoarea (p. 145) area provides electrical currenteven with the ignition switched off, whichdrains the battery.
Before a long distance trip
It is always worthwhile to have your vehicle checked by a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician before driving long distances. Yourretailer will also be able to supply you with bulbs,fuses, spark plugs and wiper blades for your usein the event that problems occur.
As a minimum, the following items should be checked before any long trip:
• Check that engine runs smoothly and thatfuel consumption is normal.
• Check for fuel, oil, and fluid leakage.
• Have the transmission oil level checked.
• Check condition of drive belts.
• Check state of the battery's charge.
• Examine tires carefully (the spare tire aswell), and replace those that areworn (p. 302). Check tire pressure (p. 309).
• The brakes, front wheel alignment, and steer-ing gear should be checked by a trained andqualified Volvo service technician only.
• Check all lights, including high beams.
• Reflective warning triangles are legallyrequired in some states/provinces.
• Have a word with a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician if you intend to drivein countries where it may be difficult toobtain the correct fuel. •
Consider your destination. If you will be driv-ing through an area where snow or ice arelikely to occur, consider snow tires (p. 316).

The appearance of the engine compartment may vary depending on engine model.
WARNING
The cooling fan (located at the front of the engine compartment, behind the radiator) maystart or continue to operate (for up to6 minutes) after the engine has beenswitched off.
WARNING
Before performing any operations in the engine compartment, the ignition should always be completely switched off (in mode 0,
see Ignition modes (p. 82)) and there should be no remote keys in the passenger compart- ment. The gear selector should be in the P
(park) position. If the engine has been run- ning, wait until it has cooled before touchingany components in the engine compartment. The distributor ignition system operates at very high voltages. Special safety precautionsmust be followed to prevent injury. Alwaysturn the ignition off when:
• Replacing distributor ignition components e.g. plugs, coil, etc.
• Do not touch any part of the distributorignition system while the engine is run-ning. This may result in unintended move-ments and body injury.

Engine compartment – brake fluid
The brake fluid should always be between the MIN and MAX marks on the inside of the reser-
voir.
Location of the brake fluid reservoir
Checking the level
The fluid reservoir is concealed under the round cover at the rear of the engine compartment. Theround cover must be removed first before thereservoir cap can be accessed. Check, without removing the cap, that there is sufficient fluid in the reservoir. Fluid type : DOT 4 boiling point >536 °F
(>280 °C).Replace : The fluid should be replaced according
to the intervals specified in the Warranty and Service Records Information booklet. When driving under extremely hard conditions(mountain driving, etc), it may be necessary toreplace the fluid more often. Consult a trainedand qualified Volvo service technician. Always entrust brake fluid changing to a trained and qualified Volvo service technician.

the reservoir or if a brake-related mes- sage is shown in the information display: DO NOT DRIVE . Have the car towed to a
trained and qualified Volvo service techni- cian and have the brake system inspec-ted.
• Dot 4 should never be mixed with anyother type of brake fluid.
Filling
1. Turn and open the cover.
2. Unscrew the reservoir cap and fill the fluid.
The level must be between the MIN and
MAX marks.
Engine compartment – power steering fluid
The fluid level must be between the MIN and
MAX marks. For capacities and recommended
fluid grade, see Fuel tank volume – specification and volume (p. 387).
Check the level frequently. It does not normally require changing.
WARNING
If a problem should occur in the power steer- ing system or if the vehicle has no electricalcurrent and must be towed, it is still possibleto steer the vehicle. However, keep in mindthat greater effort will be required to turn thesteering wheel.
