Heated windshield *, rear window
and door mirror defrosters
The heating function is used to defrost/de-ice the windshield and/or the rear window and doormirrors.

Heated rear window and door mirrors
Press button (1) to defrost/de-ice the windshield and/or button (2) to defrost the rear window anddoor mirrors. The indicator lights in the respectivebuttons indicate that the function is active. Switchthe function off when then windshield/rear win-dow/mirrors have cleared to help avoid batterydrain. The heating function will also switch offautomatically after a certain amount of time. Auto-defrosting for the rear window and door mirrors (if the vehicle is started when the ambient temperature is below 45 °F (7 °C) can be selected in MY CAR under

Automatic rear defroster.
If the Engine Remote Start (ERS) * function is
used, the electrically heated windshield function will be activated automatically at temperaturesbelow approx. 40 °F (+5 °C) if auto-defrostinghas been selected in the MY CAR menu. See My Car – introduction (p. 77) for a descrip- tion of the menu system.

Remote key and key blade
Two remote keys are provided with your vehicle. They enable you to unlock the doors and tail-gate, and also function as ignition keys to startthe vehicle or operate electrical components.The remote keys contain detachable metal keyblades for manually locking or unlocking the driv-er's door and the glove compartment. The visibleends of these key blades are unique to make iteasier to identify "your" remote key. Up to sixremotes can be programmed for use on thesame vehicle.
WARNING
Never leave the remote key in the ignition slot if children are to remain in the vehicle.

Remote key – loss
If either of the remote keys (p. 150) is lost, the other should be taken with the vehicle to a Volvoretailer. As an anti-theft measure, the code of thelost remote key must be erased from the system.
NOTE
Additional or duplicate remote control keys can be obtained from any authorized Volvoretailer. You can also obtain additional or duplicate remote control keys from certain independentrepair facilities and locksmiths that are quali-fied to make remote control keys. Each keymust be programmed to work with your vehi-cle. • The engine can be started
• The glove compartment cannot be unlocked
• The tailgate cannot be unlocked or openedwith the remote
• The rear floor hatch cannot be opened
Activating the private locking function
Insert the key blade in the glove compart- ment lock.
Turn the key blade180 degrees clockwise.
Remove the key blade from the lock. A mes- sage will appear in the instrument panel dis-play.
Deactivating the private locking function
Turn the key blade 180 degrees counterclock- wise in the glove compartment lock to deactivateprivate locking. For information on locking the glove compart- ment normally, without activating the private lock-ing function, see Locking/unlocking the glovecompartment (p. 165).
Remote key – replacing the battery The remote key can be opened if the battery needs to be replaced.
The battery should be replaced if:
• The information symbol illuminates and

• if the locks do not react after several attempts to unlock or lock the vehicle.
NOTE
The remote key's range is normally approxi- mately 60 ft (20 m) from the vehicle.

If the vehicle is locked by pressing the button on one of the door handles or by pressing thelock button on the remote key, or if it is leftunlocked for more than 30 minutes, the keymemory function will be deactivated. To reactivate the key's memory:
• Unlock the vehicle by pulling a door han- dle with the remote key in your posses-sion or by pressing the unlock button onthe remote key.

If all of the remote keys are removed from the vehicle while the engine is running or if the igni-tion modes (p. 80) is in mode II and all of the
doors are closed, a message will appear in theinstrument panel display and an audible signalwill sound.
When at least one remote key has been returned to the car, the message will be erased in the dis-play and the audible signal will stop when:
• A door has been opened and closed
• The remote key has been inserted in theignition slot
• The
OK button has been pressed. For the
location of this button, see Information dis-play – menu controls (p. 115)
CAUTION
• Keyless drive remote keys should never be left in the vehicle. In the event of abreak-in, a remote found in the vehiclecould make it possible to start theengine.
• Electromagnetic fields or metal obstruc-tions can interfere with the keyless drivesystem. The remote key should never beplaced closer than approximately 4-6 in.(10-15 cm) to cell phones, metallicobjects or e.g., stored in a metal brief-case.

In the horizontal position, the door cannot be opened from the outside.
In the vertical position, the door can be opened from the inside and the outside.
NOTE
If the manual child safety lock (p. 63) is acti- vated for a rear side door and that door isalso locked manually, the door cannot beopened from the outside or inside. The doorcan only be unlocked with the remote key orthe central locking button.

Unlocking
The vehicle can be unlocked from inside the vehi- cle in two ways:
• By pressing the unlock button

• The door can be unlocked by pulling the door handle once and opened by pulling the han-dle again.
Locking
•
Press the lock button after the front
doors have been closed.
• Each door can be locked individually with the lock button on the respective doors. The doormust be closed first.
Automatic relockingIf the doors are unlocked, the locks will automati-cally reengage (re-lock) and the alarm will re-armafter 2 minutes unless a door or the tailgate hasbeen opened.
Automatic lockingWhen the vehicle starts to move, the doors andtailgate can be locked automatically. This feature can be turned on or off by pressing

Power tailgate – automatic opening/closing
The power tailgate can be opened/closed using a button on the lighting panel or on the remotekey.
Automatic openingThe power tailgate can be opened automatically in the three ways:
• By pressing and holding the
button
on the lighting panel until the tailgate begins to open.
• By pressing and holding the
button
on the remote key until the tailgate begins to open.
• By pressing the rubber-covered button underthe outer handle on the tailgate.
The taillights illuminate automatically when the
automatic open function is used.
CAUTION
Be sure that there is adequate space above and behind the vehicle before opening thetailgate automatically. The vehicle should not be driven or moved with the tailgate in the open position. How-ever, if the vehicle is moved with the tailgatein the open position, the automatic closingfunction will be inoperative until one of thefollowing occurs:
• The tailgate is closed manually
• The ignition is switched off and the key isremoved for approximately 10 minutes(the tailgate will function again afterrestart).
NOTE
If the tailgate has been opened and closed continuously too long, the automatic functionwill be deactivated to avoid overloading theelectrical system. The automatic function canbe used again after approximately 2 minutes. If the vehicle's battery has been discharged or disconnected, or if the tailgate has been openfor more than 24 hours, the tailgate must beopened and closed once manually to resetthe system.
Automatic closingThe power tailgate can be closed by pressing the
-button on the tailgate (see the illustra-
tion) or by pressing it down.
WARNING
Pay attention to the risk of injury when open- ing/ closing the tailgate. Before opening/closing: Make sure that no one is in the pathof the tailgate as an injury could occur.

Alarm – general information
The alarm system provides a warning if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle. The alarm is automatically armed (p. 170) whenever the vehicle is locked with the remotekey. When armed, the alarm continuously monitors a number of points on the vehicle. The followingconditions will trigger the alarm:
• The hood is forced open.
• The tailgate is forced open.
• A door is forced open.
• The ignition slot is tampered with.
• An attempt is made to start the vehicle with a non-approved key (a key not coded to thecar's ignition).
• The battery is disconnected (while the alarmis armed).
• The siren is disconnected when the alarm isdisarmed.
A message will appear in the information displayif a fault should occur in the alarm system. Con-tact a trained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
NOTE
Do not attempt to repair any of the compo- nents in the alarm system yourself. This couldaffect the insurance policy on the vehicle.

Alarm indicator
The status of the alarm system is indicated by the red indicator light on the dashboard (seeillustration):
• Indicator light off: the alarm is not armed (p. 170)

• The indicator light flashes rapidly before theremote key is inserted in the ignition slot and the ignition is put in mode

Alarm – turning off
The alarm system provides a warning if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle.
If the alarm is sounding, it can be stopped by pressing the Unlock button on the remote key orby inserting the remote key in the ignition slot.Two short flashes from the car's turn signals con-firm that the alarm has been turned off.

Alarm-related functions
The following is general information regarding the alarm system in your vehicle.
Automatic re-armingIf the doors are unlocked, the locks will automati- cally re-engage (re-lock) and the alarm will re-arm after 2 minutes unless a door or the tailgatehas been opened.
Remote key not functioningIf the remote key is not functioning properly, thealarm can be turned off and the vehicle can bestarted as follows:
1. Open the driver's door with the key blade.
>This will trigger the alarm.
2. To turn off the alarm, insert the remote key
into the ignition slot (also on vehicles with the optional keyless drive). 3. Start the engine.

Starting the engine
The engine can be started/switched off using the remote key and the START/STOP ENGINE
button.

WARNING
Before starting the engine:
• Fasten the seat belt.
• Check that the seat, steering wheel and mirrors are adjusted properly.
• Make sure the brake pedal can bedepressed completely. Adjust the seat ifnecessary.
WARNING
•Never use more than one floor mat at a time on the driver's floor. Before driving,remove the original mat from the driver'sseat floor before using any other type offloor mat. Any mat used in this positionshould be securely and properly anchoredin the attaching pins. An extra mat on thedriver's floor can cause the acceleratorand/or brake pedal to catch. Check thatthe movement of these pedals is notimpeded.
• Volvo's floor mats are specially manufac-tured for your car. They must be firmlysecured in the clips on the floor so thatthey cannot slide and become trappedunder the pedals on the driver's side.
1. Press the remote key into the ignition slot as far as possible, with the metallic key blade pointing outward (not inserted into the slot) 1

Press and release the START/STOP
ENGINE button. The autostart function will
operate the starter motor until the engine starts or until its overheating function stopsit. The starter motor operates for a maximum of 10 seconds. If the engine has not started,repeat the procedure.
CAUTION
If the engine does not start after the third try, wait for approximately 3 minutes before tryingto start it again to give the battery time torecover its starting capacity.
NOTE
Keyless drive *
To start a vehicle equipped with the keyless drive feature, one of the remote keys must bein the passenger compartment. Follow theinstructions in steps 2 and 3 to start the vehi-cle.
