ShiftlockWhen your vehicle is parked, the gear selector is locked in the P (Park) position. To release the selector from this position, the ignition must be inmode
II (p. 80) or the engine must be running.
Depress the brake pedal, press the button on the front side of the gear selector and move the selector from P (Park).
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)The ABS system performs a brief self-diagnostic test when the engine has been started and driverreleases the brake pedal. Another automatic testmay be performed when the vehicle first reachesa speed of approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). Thebrake pedal will pulsate several times and asound may be audible from the ABS controlmodule. This is normal.
Fuel filler doorPress the button on the light switch panel (seethe illustration in Refueling – opening/closingfuel filler door (p. 276)) when the vehicle is at astandstill to unlock the fuel filler door. It willrelock when closed and there will be an audibleclick.
Points to keep in mind
• Do not export your Volvo to another countrybefore investigating that country's applicablesafety and exhaust emission requirements. Insome cases it may be difficult or impossibleto comply with these requirements. Modifica-tions to the emission control system(s) mayrender your Volvo not certifiable for legal

Please keep the following warnings in mind when operating/servicing your vehicle.
Driver distractionA driver has a responsibility to do everything pos- sible to ensure his or her own safety and thesafety of passengers in the vehicle and otherssharing the roadway. Avoiding distractions is partof that responsibility. Driver distraction results from driver activities that are not directly related to controlling the vehiclein the driving environment. Your new Volvo is, orcan be, equipped with many feature-rich enter-tainment and communication systems. Theseinclude hands-free cellular telephones, navigationsystems, and multipurpose audio systems. Youmay also own other portable electronic devicesfor your own convenience. When used properlyand safely, they enrich the driving experience.Improperly used, any of these could cause a dis-traction. For all of these systems, we want to provide the following warning that reflects the strong Volvoconcern for your safety. Never use these devicesor any feature of your vehicle in a way that dis-tracts you from the task of driving safely. Distrac-tion can lead to a serious accident. In addition tothis general warning, we offer the following guid-ance regarding specific newer features that maybe found in your vehicle:
WARNING
• Never use a hand-held cellular telephone while driving. Some jurisdictions prohibitcellular telephone use by a driver whilethe vehicle is moving.
• If your vehicle is equipped with a naviga-tion system, set and make changes toyour travel itinerary only with the vehicleparked.
• Never program your audio system whilethe vehicle is moving. Program radio pre-sets with the vehicle parked, and use yourprogrammed presets to make radio usequicker and simpler.
• Never use portable computers or per-sonal digital assistants while the vehicleis moving.
Accessory installation
•We strongly recommend that Volvo owners install only genuine, Volvo-approved acces-sories, and that accessory installations beperformed only by a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician.
• Genuine Volvo accessories are tested toensure compatibility with the performance,safety, and emission systems in your vehicle.Additionally, a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician knows where accessoriesmay and may not be safely installed in yourVolvo. In all cases, please consult a trained and qualified Volvo service technician beforeinstalling any accessory in or on your vehicle.
• Accessories that have not been approved byVolvo may or may not be specifically testedfor compatibility with your vehicle. Addition-ally, an inexperienced installer may not befamiliar with some of your car's systems.
• Any of your car's performance and safetysystems could be adversely affected if youinstall accessories that Volvo has not tested,or if you allow accessories to be installed bysomeone unfamiliar with your vehicle.
• Damage caused by unapproved or improperlyinstalled accessories may not be covered byyour new vehicle warranty. See your Warrantyand Service Records Information booklet formore warranty information. Wireless Control
System * – programming
The HomeLink Wireless Control System pro- vides a convenient way to replace up to threehand-held radio-frequency (RF) transmittersused to activate devices such as gate operators,garage door openers, entry door locks, securitysystems, even home lighting. Additional informa-tion can be found on the Internetatwww.homelink.com/www.youtube.com/HomeLinkGentex or by phoning the hotline at 1–800–355–3515.
NOTE
Some vehicles may require the ignition to be switched on or be in the “accessories” posi-tion for programming and/or operation ofHomeLink. It is also recommended that a newbattery be placed in the hand-held transmitterof the device being programmed to Home-Link for quicker training and accurate trans-mission of the radio-frequency signal. TheHomeLink buttons must be reset first. Whenthis has been completed, Homelink is inlearning mode so that you can perform pro-gramming.
1. Position the end of your hand-held transmit- ter 1–3 inches (5–14 cm) away from the HomeLink button you wish to program whilekeeping the indicator light in view. 2. Simultaneously press and hold both the
chosen HomeLink and hand-held transmitterbuttons until the HomeLink indicator lightchanges from a slow to a rapidly blinkinglight. Now you may release both the Home-Link and hand-held transmitter buttons.
NOTE
Some devices may require you to replace this Programming Step 2 with procedures notedin the “Gate Operator / Canadian Program-ming” section. If the HomeLink indicator lightdoes not change to a rapidly blinking lightafter performing these steps, contact Home-Link at www.homelink.com/www.youtube.com/HomeLinkGentex or byphoning the hotline at 1–800–355–3515.
3. Firmly press, hold for five seconds and
release the programmed HomeLink button
up to two separate times to activate the door. If the door does not activate, press and holdthe just-trained HomeLink button andobserve the indicator light.
• If the indicator light
stays on constantly,
programming is complete and your
device should activate when the Home-Link button is pressed and released.
• If the indicator light blinks
rapidly for two
seconds and then turns to a constantlight continue with “Programming”steps 4-6 to complete the programming
of a rolling code equipped device (mostcommonly a garage door opener).
4. At the garage door opener receiver (motor- head unit) in the garage, locate the “learn” or “smart” button. This can usually be foundwhere the hanging antenna wire is attachedto the motor-head unit.

Tunnel console The tunnel console is located between the front seats.
Storage compartment (for CDs, etc.) under armrest, AUX input/USB connector.
Includes cup holder for driver and passenger, 12-volt socket (p. 142) and a small storagecompartment.

Tunnel console – 12-volt sockets
The electrical sockets can be used for 12-volt accessories such as cell phone chargers andcoolers. For the socket to supply current, theignition must be in at least mode I (p. 80). The
sockets are located between the cup holders inthe tunnel console and on the rear side of the
tunnel console (p. 142) for rear seat passen-gers.

The maximum current consumption is 10A (120W) if only one of the 12-volt sockets in thepassenger compartment is in use. If both thefront and rear sockets are used at the same time,the maximum current consumption per socket is7.5A (90W). The auxiliary sockets can also be used to power a cigarette lighter. Accessory cigarette lighters andashtrays can be purchased from your Volvoretailer.

Glove compartment
The glove compartment provides a lockable stor- age compartment for small items.
The owner's manual and maps can be kept here. There are also holders for pens and fuel cards.The glove compartment can be locked manuallywith the key blade, see Locking/unlocking –glove compartment (p. 165).

Vanity mirror
The vanity mirrors are located on the upper side of the sun visors.

Loading – general
The load carrying capacity of your vehicle is determined by factors such as the number ofpassengers, the amount of cargo, the weight ofany accessories that may be installed, etc.
To increase loading space, the rear seat back- rests can be folded down, see Rear seats – fold-
ing backrest (p. 87).
When loading the cargo area, keep the following
in mind:
• Load objects in the cargo area against thebackrest whenever possible.
• Unstable loads can be secured to the loadanchoring eyelets with straps or web lash-ings to help keep them from shifting.
• Stop the engine and apply the parking brakewhen loading or unloading long objects. Thegear selector can be knocked out of positionby long loads, which could set the vehicle inmotion.

• Stop the engine, put the gear selector in P
, and apply the parking brake when
loading or unloading long objects.
• The vehicle's driving characteristics may change depending on the weight and dis-tribution of the load.
• A 44-pound (20 kg) object produces aforce of 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg) in ahead-on collision at 30 mph (50 km/h).
• The cargo area and rear seat should notbe loaded to a level higher than 2 in.(5 cm) below the upper edge of the rearside windows. Objects placed higher thanthis level could impede the function ofthe Inflatable Curtain.

Loading – roof load carriers
Using load carriersLoad carriers are available as Volvo accessories. Observe the following points when in use:
• To avoid damaging your vehicle and toachieve maximum safety when driving, werecommend using the load carriers that Volvohas developed especially for your vehicle.
• Volvo-approved removable roof racks aredesigned to carry the maximum allowableroof load for this vehicle: 220 lbs (100 kg).For non-Volvo roof racks, check the manu-facturer's weight limits for the rack.
• Never exceed the rack manufacturer's weighlimits and never exceed the maximum ratedroof load of 220 lbs (100 kg).
• Avoid single-point loads. Distribute loadsevenly.
• Place heavier cargo at the bottom of theload.
• Secure the cargo correctly with appropriatetie-down equipment.
• Check periodically that the load carriers andload are properly secured.
• Remember that the vehicle's center of gravityand handling change when you carry a loadon the roof.

Radar sensor
The radar sensor is designed to help detect cars or larger vehicles driving in the same direction asyour vehicle, in the same lane.
The radar sensor and its limitationsIn addition to being used by the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), the radar sensor is also used byDistance Alert (see Distance Alert – introduction(p. 199)) and Collision Warning with Full Auto-brake and Pedestrian Detection (see Collisionwarning – introduction (p. 210)).
WARNING
• If there is visible damage to the front grille or you suspect that the radar sensormay be damaged in any way, contact atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian as soon as possible. The radar sen-sor may only function partially (or not atall) if it is damaged or is not securely fas-tened in place.
• Accessories or other objects, such asextra headlights, must not be installed infront of the grille.
• Modification of the radar sensor couldmake its use illegal.
The radar sensor's capacity to detect vehicles ahead is impeded: • if the radar sensor is obstructed and cannotdetect other vehicles, for example in heavy rain, or if snow or other objects are obscuringthe radar sensor.
NOTE
Keep the area in front of the radar sensor clean.

LimitationsEven if a fairly small section of the screen image appears to be obstructed, this may mean that arelatively large area behind the vehicle is hiddenand objects there may not be detected until theyare very near the vehicle.
NOTE
Bicycle carriers or other accessories mounted on the tailgate may obstruct the camera'sfield of view.
Keep in mind
•Keep the camera's lens free of dirt, ice and snow. Remove ice and snow carefully toavoid scratching the lens.
• Clean the lens regularly with warm water anda suitable car washing detergent.

BLIS
* – introduction
The Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) is an information system that indicates the presenceof another vehicle moving in the same directionas your vehicle on roads with several lanes.

Conserving electrical current
Keep the following in mind to help minimize bat- tery drain:
• When the engine is not running, avoid using ignition mode
II. Many electrical systems (the
audio system, the optional navigation system, power windows, etc) will function in ignition modes 0 and I. These modes reduce drain
on the battery.
• Please keep in mind that using systems, accessories, etc., that consume a great dealof current when the engine is not runningcould result in the battery being completelydrained. Driving or having the engine runningfor approximately 15 minutes will help keepthe battery charged.
• The optional 12-volt socket in the cargoarea (p. 143) area provides electrical currenteven with the ignition switched off, whichdrains the battery.
Before a long distance trip
It is always worthwhile to have your vehicle checked by a trained and qualified Volvo servicetechnician before driving long distances. Yourretailer will also be able to supply you with bulbs,fuses, spark plugs and wiper blades for your usein the event that problems occur.
As a minimum, the following items should be checked before any long trip:
• Check that engine runs smoothly and thatfuel consumption is normal.
• Check for fuel, oil, and fluid leakage.
• Have the transmission oil level checked.
• Check condition of drive belts.
• Check state of the battery's charge.
• Examine tires carefully (the spare tire aswell), and replace those that areworn (p. 290). Check tire pressure (p. 297).
• The brakes, front wheel alignment, and steer-ing gear should be checked by a trained andqualified Volvo service technician only.
• Check all lights, including high beams.
• Reflective warning triangles are legallyrequired in some states/provinces.
• Have a word with a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician if you intend to drivein countries where it may be difficult toobtain the correct fuel. •
Consider your destination. If you will be driv-ing through an area where snow or ice arelikely to occur, consider snow tires (p. 303).

Maintenance – introductionPeriodic maintenance will help keep your vehicle running well.
IntroductionThe maintenance services contain several checks that require special instruments and tools andtherefore must be performed by a qualified tech-nician. To keep your Volvo in top condition, spec-ify time-tested and proven Genuine Volvo Partsand Accessories.
The Federal Clean Air Act – U.S.
The Federal Clean Air Act requires vehicle manu- facturers to furnish written instructions to the ulti-mate purchaser to assure the proper servicingand function of the components that controlemissions. These services, which are listed in the"Warranty and Service Records Information"booklet, are not covered by the warranty. You willbe required to pay for labor and material used.
Maintenance
Your Volvo passed several major inspections before it was delivered to you, in accordance withVolvo specifications. The maintenance proce-dures outlined in the Warranty and ServiceRecords Information booklet, many of which willpositively affect your vehicle's emissions, shouldbe performed as indicated. It is recommendedthat receipts for vehicle emission maintenance beretained in case questions arise concerningmaintenance. Inspection and maintenance should also be performed anytime a malfunction isobserved or suspected.
Applicable warranties – U.S./Canada
In accordance with applicable U.S. and Canadian regulations, the following list of warranties is pro-vided.
