WARNING
•Warnings and brake interventions can be triggered late or not at all if the traffic sit-uation or external influences prevent thecamera and radar unit from properlydetecting pedestrians, cyclists, large ani-mals or vehicles ahead of the vehicle.
• To be able to detect vehicles at night, itsfront and rear lights must work and illumi-nate clearly.
• The camera and radar unit have a limitedrange for pedestrians and cyclists – thesystem can provide effective warningsand brake interventions if the relativespeed is lower than 50 km/h (30 mph).For stationary or slow-moving vehicles,warnings and brake interventions areeffective at vehicle speeds of up to70 km/h (43 mph). Speed reduction forlarge animals is less than 15 km/h(9 mph) and can be achieved at vehiclespeeds over 70 km/h (43 mph). At lowerspeeds, the warning and brake interven-tion for large animals is less effective.
• Warnings for stationary or slow-movingvehicles and large animals can be disen-gaged due to darkness or poor visibility.
• Warnings and brake interventions for pedestrians and cyclists are disengagedat vehicle speeds over 80 km/h(50 mph).
• Do not place, affix or mount anything onthe inside or outside of the windshield, orin front of or around the camera andradar unit – this could disrupt camera-based functions.
• Objects, snow, ice or dirt in the area ofthe camera sensor can reduce the func-tion, disengage it completely or give animproper function response.

Indicator light
The BLIS button in the center display's Func- tion view is used to activate/deactivate thefunction.
–Tap the BLIS button in Function view.
> The BLIS indicator light shows the status of the function: GREEN (on) or GRAY (off).
If BLIS is activated when the engine is started,the indicator lights in the rearview mirrors willflash once. If BLIS is deactivated when the engine is turned off, it will remain off the next time the engine isstarted and the indicator lights will not illuminate.

Activating/deactivating Park Assist
The Park Assist Pilot function can be activated/ deactivated.
On/OffPark Assist's front and side sensors are automat- ically activated when the engine is started. Therear sensors are activated if the vehicle is movingbackward or reverse gear is engaged.
The function can be activated/deactivated in the center dis-play's Function view.
–Tap the Park Assist button in Function view.

Park Assist limitations
Park Assist may not be able to detect all condi- tions in all situations and functionality may there-fore be limited in certain cases.
The driver should be aware of the following limi- tations for Park Assist:

Ignition modes
The vehicle's ignition can be put in various modes (levels) to make different functions availa-ble.
To enable the use of a limited number of func- tions when the engine is not running, the ignition can be put in one of three different levels: 0, I
and II. These levels are referred to as "ignition
modes" in the Owner's Manual. The following table shows which functions are available in each ignition mode:

•If both symbols illuminate at the same time and the brake level is below the
MIN
mark in the reservoir or if a brake system- related message is shown in the instru-ment panel: DO NOT DRIVE. Have thevehicle towed to a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician and have thebrake system inspected.
• If both symbols illuminate at the sametime and the brake level is normal (notbelow the MIN mark in the reservoir) or ifa brake system-related message isshown in the instrument panel: drive thevehicle carefully to an authorized Volvoworkshop and have the brake systeminspected by a trained and qualified Volvoservice technician.

Brake Assist System
The brake enhancing system, Brake Assist
System (BAS), helps increase braking force andthereby reduce braking distance.
The system monitors the driver's braking habits and increases braking force when necessary.Braking force can be increased up to the point atwhich the ABS intervenes. The function is deacti-vated when pressure on the brake pedal isdecreased.
NOTE
When BAS is activated, the brake pedal will go down slightly more than usual. Press(hold) down the brake pedal as long as nec-essary. When the brake pedal is released, all braking ceases.

Braking on wet roads
Prolonged driving in heavy rain without braking may cause braking effect to be slightly delayedthe first time the brakes are applied.
This may also occur after washing the vehicle. It will then be necessary to apply greater pressureto the brake pedal. You should therefore maintaina greater distance to the vehicle ahead. Firmly apply the brakes after washing the vehicle or driving on wet roads. This helps warm up thebrake discs, enabling them to dry more quicklyand protecting them against corrosion. Braking assist after a collision In a collision in which the activation level is reached for the pyrotechnic seat belt tensionersor airbags, or if a collision with a large animal isdetected, the vehicle's brakes will be automati-cally activated. This function is intended to helpprevent or reduce the effects of any subsequentcollision.
After a serious collision, it may no longer be pos- sible to control and steer the vehicle. In order toavoid or mitigate a possible further collision witha vehicle or an object in the vehicle's path, thebrake assist system is activated automatically tohelp stop the vehicle safely. The brake lights and hazard warning flashers are activated during braking. When the vehicle has stopped, the hazard warning flashers will con-tinue to flash and the parking brake will beapplied. If braking is not appropriate, e.g. if there is a risk of being hit by passing traffic, the driver can over-ride the system by depressing the acceleratorpedal. This function assumes that the brake system is intact after a collision. Brake assist is part of the Rear Collision Warning and Blind Spot Information safety systems.

Transmission The transmission is part of the vehicle's driveline (power transmission) between the engine andthe drive wheels. The function of the transmis-sion is to change gears depending on speedand power needs.
The vehicle has an 8-speed automatic transmis- sion. The number of gears allows the engine'storque and power band to be effectively utilized.Two of the gears are overdrive gears that savefuel when driving at a constant engine speed.Manual shifting is also possible. The instrumentpanel shows the gear currently in use.
CAUTION
Check the operating temperature of the transmission to help avoid damage to any ofthe drive system components. If there is a riskof overheating, a warning symbol will appearin the instrument panel and a text messagewill be displayed. Follow the recommenda-tions given.

All Wheel Drive (AWD)
*
All-wheel drive, All Wheel Drive (AWD), also called four-wheel drive, means that power is dis-tributed to all four wheels, which improves trac-tion.
To achieve the best traction, power is automati- cally directed to the wheels that have the bestgrip. The system continuously calculates theneed for torque to the rear wheels, and canimmediately redistribute up to half of the engine'storque to the rear wheels. All-wheel drive also has a stabilizing effect at higher speeds. In normal driving conditions, mostof the engine's power is directed to the frontwheels. When the vehicle is stationary, all-wheeldrive is always activated in preparation for maxi-mum traction during acceleration. All-wheel drive reacts differently depending on which drive mode * is selected.

Drive modes
*
Drive modes affect the vehicle's driving charac- teristics in different ways to enhance and sim-plify the driving experience in certain types of sit-uations.
Drive modes enable easy access to the vehicle's many functions and settings in different drivingsituations. The following systems are adapted tohelp optimize driving characteristics in each drivemode: • Steering

Select the drive mode that is best suited to the current driving conditions. Keep in mind that notall drive modes are available in all situations.
Available drive modes
COMFORT
• This is the vehicle's default mode.
When the engine is started, the vehicle will be in Comfort mode and the Start/Stop function will beactivated. This setting offers driving comfort, lightsteering and soft suspension.

Hill Descent Control *
The function for assisting when driving downhill, Hill Descent Control (HDC), is a low-speedfunction with increased engine braking. Thefunction makes it possible to increase ordecrease the vehicle's speed on steep downhillgradients by only using the accelerator pedal,without applying the brakes. In vehicles equipped with drive mode control *,
the function is included in the Off Road drive mode.
HDC is designed for driving on rough roads at low speeds and downhill gradients with slipperyor otherwise difficult road surfaces. The driverdoes not need to use the brake pedal but caninstead focus on steering.
WARNING
HDC is only intended to be a supplementary braking aid and it does not function in all sit-uations. The driver is always ultimately responsible for operating the vehicle in a safe manner.
FunctionHill Descent Control allows the vehicle to move forward or backward at very low speeds assistedby the brake system. The driver can increase thespeed by pressing the accelerator pedal. Whenthe accelerator pedal is released, the vehicle will return to very low speed regardless of how steepthe hill is and without the brakes needing to beapplied. The brake lights will illuminate when thefunction is activated. The driver can brake to stop or slow the vehicle at any time by depressing the brake pedal. HDC is activated along with Low Speed Control (LSC), which facilitates and improves traction andcontrol on rough and slippery surfaces. The sys-tem is intended to be used at low speeds, up toapproximately 40 km/h (25 mph).
To keep in mind when using HDC
•
If the function is switched off while driving ona steep downhill gradient, braking effect willbe gradually reduced.
• HDC can be used in gear positions
D and R,
and in manual gears 1 or 2.
• It is not possible to manually shift to thirdgear or higher when HDC is active.
NOTE
When LSC with HDC is activated, the feel of the accelerator pedal and engine responsewill change.
NOTE
This drive mode is not designed to be used for normal street driving.
NOTE
The function is deactivated when driving at high speeds and must be reactivated at lowerspeeds if so desired.

Fuel consumption is increased at high speeds - air resistance increases with speed.
• Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle- the heavier the load, the higher the fuelconsumption.
• Maintain the correct pressure in the tires andcheck pressure regularly.
• The type of tires used could affect fuel con-sumption - consult a retailer for advice onsuitable tires.
• Do not use winter tires after the winter sea-son has ended.
• Roof loads increase air resistance andincrease fuel consumption. Remove roofboxes, ski racks, etc. that are not in use.
• Avoid driving with the windows open.
• Using the trip computer's fuel consumptionindicators can help you learn how to drivemore economically.
Other factors that decrease fuel
consumption
• Dirty air cleaner.
• Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter.
• Incorrect front-end alignment.
• Incorrect wheel alignment.

Preparing for a long trip
It is important to have the vehicle's systems and equipment checked carefully before driving longdistances.
Check that:
• the engine is running properly and that fuel consumption is normal
• there are no leaks (fuel, oil or other fluid)
• the brake pedal is functioning optimally
• all lights are working

adjust the headlight
height if the vehicle is carrying a heavy load
• tire tread depth and air pressure are at cor-rect levels. Change to snow tires when driv-ing in areas where there is a risk of snowy oricy roads.
• the start battery is sufficiently charged
• the wiper blades are in good condition

Overheating of engine andtransmission
In demanding driving conditions, such as driving in mountainous areas or hot weather, there is arisk of the engine or transmission overheating,especially when carrying heavy loads.
• Engine power may be temporarily limited.
• Remove any auxiliary lights mounted in front of the grille when driving in hot weather.
• If the temperature in the engine's coolingsystem becomes too high, a warning symbolwill appear in the instrument panel along with the message

It is normal for the engine's cooling fan to operate for a short time after the engine isswitched off.
