In the center of the instrument panel is a dynamic symbol that changes appearance according to the type of message displayed. The severity ofthe control or warning symbol is indicated by anamber or red marking around the symbol. An ani-mation may be used to change the symbol into alarger image in order to graphically depict thelocation of a problem or to clarify information.

Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge in the instrument panel shows the fuel level in the tank.
Fuel gauge in 12" instrument panel: The beige area in the fuel gauge indicates the amount of fuel left in the tank. When the fuel level is low and it is time to refuel, the fuel pump symbol will illuminate with anamber-colored light. The trip computer also indi-cates the approximate distance driven on the fuelremaining in the tank.
Fuel gauge in 8" instrument panel: The bars in the fuel gauge indicate the amount of fuel left in the tank. When the fuel level is low and it is time to refuel, the fuel pump symbol will illuminate with anamber-colored light. The trip computer also indi-cates the approximate distance driven on the fuelremaining in the tank. When the fuel level is criti-cally low, only an amber bar will be displayed.Refuel as soon as possible.

Trip computer The vehicle's trip computer registers and calcu- lates data while driving such as mileage, fuelconsumption and average speed.
To help promote fuel-efficient driving, data is recorded on both current and average fuel con-sumption. Data from the trip computer can bedisplayed in the instrument panel.

The trip computer includes the following gauges:

Unit standards for distance, speed, etc. can be changed via system settings in the center display.
Trip odometerThere are two trip odometers: TM and TA. TM can be reset manually and TA is reset auto- matically if the vehicle is not used for four hours. During a drive, the trip odometer registers data on:
• Mileage
• Driving time
• Average speed
• Average fuel consumption
The readings since the trip odometer's last resetare displayed.
OdometerThe odometer records the vehicle's total mileage.This reading cannot be reset.
Current fuel consumptionThis gauge shows the vehicle's fuel consumptionat that moment. The reading is updated aboutonce a second.
Distance to empty tankThe trip computer calculates the distance thatcan be driven on the fuel remaining in the tank. This calculation is based on average fuel con-sumption during the last 30 km (20 miles) andthe amount of fuel remaining in the tank. When the gauge displays "----", there is not enough fuel remaining to calculate the remainingmileage. Refuel as soon as possible.
NOTE
This may vary if your driving style changes.
An economical driving style will generally increase how far you can drive on a certainamount of fuel.
Tourist - alternative speedometerThe alternative digital speedometer makes it eas-ier to drive in countries where speed limit signsare shown in a different measurement unit thanthe one shown in the vehicle's gauges. When used, the digital speed is displayed in the opposite unit to that shown in the analog speed- ometer. If
mph is used in the analog speedome-
ter, the equivalent speed in km/h will be shown
in the digital speedometer.

Displaying trip data in theinstrument panel
Data recorded and calculated by the trip com- puter can be displayed on the instrument panel.
This data is stored in a trip computer app. You can choose which information the instrumentpanel will display in the app menu.

Confirm 1. Open the app menu in the instrument panel
by pressing (1). (The App menu cannot be opened while there is an unacknowledged message in theinstrument panel. The message must be con-firmed before the App menu can be opened.)
2. Navigate to the trip computer app by moving left or right using (2).
> The top four menu rows show measuredvalues for trip odometer TM. The next four menu rows show measured values for tripodometer TA. Scroll up or down in the listusing (3).
3. Scroll down to the option buttons to choose which information to show in the instrumentpanel:
• Distance to empty tank
• Odometer
• Mileage for trip odometer TM, TA or nodisplay of mileage
• Current fuel consumption, average fuelconsumption for TM or TA, or no displayof fuel consumption
• Tourist (alternative speedometer).
Select or clear a selection using the O but-
ton (4). The change will apply immediately.

Resetting the trip odometer
Resetting the trip odometer using the left-side steering wheel lever.
–Reset all information in trip odometer TM (i.e. mileage, average fuel consumption, averagespeed and driving time) by pressing and holding the RESET button on the left-hand
steering wheel lever. Tapping the RESET button only resets the
distance driven.
The TA trip odometer can not be manually reset. It resets automatically if the vehicle is not usedfor four hours or more.

Displaying trip statistics in thecenter display
Trip computer statistics can be displayed graphi- cally in the center display, providing an overviewthat facilitates more fuel-efficient driving.
Open the Driver performanceapp in the App view to display trip statistics. Each bar in the graph repre- sents a driving distance of 1kilometers, 10 kilometers or
100 kilometers (or miles). The bars are addedfrom the right as you drive. The bar at the far rightshows the data for the current trip. Average fuel consumption and total driving time are calculated from the most recent reset of thetrip statistics.

ECO drive mode
The Eco drive mode optimizes the vehicle's driv- ing characteristics for more fuel-efficient andeco-friendly driving.
Use this mode to save fuel and promote eco- friendly driving. When ECO mode is activated, the following cha- racteristics are modified:
• The automatic transmission's shifting points.
• Engine control and accelerator pedalresponse.
• Eco Coast functionality is activated andengine braking is disabled when the acceler-ator pedal is released at speeds between65 and 140 km/h (40 and 87 mph).
• Some of the climate system settings will bereduced or switched off.
• The suspension's self-leveling function
* will
lower ground clearance to help reduce windresistance.
• Information will be shown in the ECO gaugein the instrument panel to help promotemore eco-friendly and economical driving.
Coast function Eco CoastEco Coast essentially deactivates engine braking,allowing the vehicle's kinetic energy to be usedto roll greater distances. When the driver releasesthe accelerator pedal, the transmission is auto-matically disengaged from the engine. Engine speed is reduced to idling speed to reduce fuelconsumption. This function is most effective in driving situa- tions where the vehicle can roll freely for a longdistance, e.g. on roads with slight downgrades orwhen a decrease in speed is anticipated, such aswhen approaching an area with a lower speedlimit.
Activating Eco Coast
The function is activated when the accelerator pedal is fully released and the following condi-tions are met:
• Eco drive mode is activated.
• The gear selector is in
D.
• The vehicle's speed is approximately65-140 km/h (40-87 mph).
• The gradient of the downgrade is less thanapproximately 6%.
COASTING will be displayed in the instrument
panel when Eco Coast is being used.
Limitations
Eco Coast is not available if:
• The engine and/or transmission are not at normal working temperatures.
• The gear selector is moved from
D to manual
shifting mode.
• The vehicle's speed is not within the65-140 km/h (40-87 mph) range. •
The gradient of the downgrade is more thanapproximately 6%.
• The steering wheel paddles
* are being used
for manual shifting.
Deactivating and turning off Eco Coast
In certain situations, it may be advisable to deac- tivate or turn off Eco Coast so that engine brak-ing can be used. These situations might includedriving down steep hills or before passinganother vehicle to help ensure this can be doneas safely as possible. Deactivate Eco Coast by:
• Pressing the accelerator or brake pedal.
• Moving the gear selector to manual mode.
• Using the steering wheel paddles
* to shift.
Turn off Eco Coast by:
• Switching drive mode
* or switching off drive
mode Eco in Function view.
It is possible to roll short distances even without Eco Coast in order to help conserve fuel. How-ever, for the best fuel economy, Eco Coast shouldbe activated and used to roll longer distances.
Cruise control Eco CruiseWhen cruise control is activated in the Eco drivemode, the vehicle's acceleration and decelerationwill be slower than in other drive modes to helpfurther conserve fuel. Because of this, the vehi-cle's actual speed may be slightly above or belowthe set speed.

HDC only works at low speeds.
–Tap the Hill Descent Control button to
activate or deactivate the function.
> An indicator light in the button will illumi- nate when the function is activated.
When the engine is switched off, the function will be automatically deactivated.
NOTE
The function is deactivated when driving at high speeds and must be reactivated at lowerspeeds if so desired.

Economical driving
Drive economically and environmentally con- scious by thinking ahead, avoiding rapid startsand stops and adapting driving style and speedto the current traffic conditions.
Driving economically conserves natural resources
Observe the following rules:
• Do not warm up the engine by idling. It is better to begin driving normally immediately after starting the engine. A cold engine uses more fuel than a warm engine and is subject to increased wear.
• Whenever possible, avoid using the vehicle todrive short distances. The engine does nothave time to reach a normal operating tem-perature and this leads to increased fuelconsumption.
• Maintain a steady speed and a generous fol-lowing distance to traffic ahead to minimizebraking.
• For lower fuel consumption, activate Ecodrive mode.
• Use the Eco Coast function in drive mode Eco - engine braking is deactivated, allowing the vehicle's kinetic energy to be used to rollgreater distances.
• Use gear
D as often as possible and avoid
using the kick-down function.

Fuel consumption is increased at high speeds - air resistance increases with speed.
• Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle- the heavier the load, the higher the fuelconsumption.
• Maintain the correct pressure in the tires andcheck pressure regularly.
• The type of tires used could affect fuel con-sumption - consult a retailer for advice onsuitable tires.
• Do not use winter tires after the winter sea-son has ended.
• Roof loads increase air resistance andincrease fuel consumption. Remove roofboxes, ski racks, etc. that are not in use.
• Avoid driving with the windows open.
• Using the trip computer's fuel consumptionindicators can help you learn how to drivemore economically.
Other factors that decrease fuel
consumption
• Dirty air cleaner.
• Dirty engine oil and clogged oil filter.
• Incorrect front-end alignment.
• Incorrect wheel alignment.

Preparing for a long trip
It is important to have the vehicle's systems and equipment checked carefully before driving longdistances.
Check that:
• the engine is running properly and that fuel consumption is normal
• there are no leaks (fuel, oil or other fluid)
• the brake pedal is functioning optimally
• all lights are working

adjust the headlight
height if the vehicle is carrying a heavy load
• tire tread depth and air pressure are at cor-rect levels. Change to snow tires when driv-ing in areas where there is a risk of snowy oricy roads.
• the start battery is sufficiently charged
• the wiper blades are in good condition

Follow applicable regulations regarding per- mitted speed and weight.
• Drive slowly when towing a trailer up a longand steep incline.
• The maximum trailer weights given only applyto altitudes up to 1000 meters (3280 feet)above sea level. At higher altitudes, enginepower (and thus the vehicle's climbing ability)is decreased due to the reduced air density,and the maximum trailer weight must there-fore be reduced. The weight of the vehicleand trailer must be decreased by 10% foreach additional 1000 m (3280 feet) or partthereof.
• Avoid driving with a trailer on inclines of morethan 12%.
• Avoid overloading and other incorrect use.
• The trailer's brakes must be balanced withthe vehicle's brakes to help ensure safestops (follow applicable local regulations).
CAUTION
•Bumper-attached trailer hitches must not be used on Volvos, nor should safetychains be attached to the bumper.
• Trailer hitches attaching to the vehiclerear axle must not be used.
• Never connect a trailer's hydraulic brakesystem directly to the vehicle brake sys-tem, nor a trailer's lighting system directlyto the vehicle lighting system. Consultyour nearest authorized Volvo retailer forcorrect installation.
• When towing a trailer, the trailer's safetychains or wire must be correctly fastenedto the attachment points provided in thetrailer hitch on the vehicle. The safetychain or wire must never be fastened toor wound around the towing ball.
NOTE
The optional detachable trailer hitch may not be available in all markets or on all models.Consult your Volvo retailer.
NOTE
Extreme weather conditions, towing a trailer, driving at high altitudes and fuel quality arefactors that significantly increase a vehicle'sfuel consumption.
Trailer weights
WARNING
Please adhere to the recommendations provi- ded for trailer weight. If the recommendationsare not followed, the vehicle and trailer maybe difficult to control during evasive maneu-vers and braking.
NOTE
The specified maximum trailer weights are those permitted by Volvo. National vehicleregulations may set additional restrictions ontrailer weight and speed. The trailer hitchesmay be certified for higher towing weightsthan the vehicle is permitted to tow.
Self-leveling suspension
*The vehicle's self-leveling system attempts to keep the vehicle at a constant level, regardless ofload (up to the maximum permitted weight).When the vehicle is stationary, the rear end of thevehicle will be slightly lowered, which is normal.
Driving in hilly terrain or hot weatherIn certain conditions, there is a risk of overheat-ing when driving with a trailer. If overheating ofthe engine and drive system is detected, a warn-ing symbol will illuminate in the instrument panelalong with a message.
