The Late warning distance setting should there-fore only be used in exceptional cases, such aswhen a more dynamic driving style is preferred.
WARNING
No automatic system can guarantee100% correct function in all situations.You should therefore never test use ofCity Safety in the direction of people, ani-mals or vehicles – this could lead tosevere damage, serious personal injury oreven death.
City Safety warns the driver if there is arisk of collision, but the function cannotreduce the driver's reaction time.
Even if the warning distance has been setto Early, warnings may be perceived aslate in certain situations – e.g. when thereare large speed differences or if the vehi-cle ahead suddenly brakes heavily.
With the warning distance set to Early,warnings come further in advance. Thismay cause the warnings to come morefrequently than with warning distanceNormal, but is recommended since it canmake City Safety more effective.
NOTE
The warning with direction indicators for RearCollision Warning is deactivated if the colli-sion warning distance in the City Safety func-tion is set to the lowest level "Late".
The seat belt tensioning and braking func-tions remain active.

Detecting obstacles with City Safety
City Safety can help detect vehicles, cyclists,large animals and pedestrians.
Vehicles
City Safety detects most types of vehicles thatare either stationary, moving in the same direc-tion as your vehicle or those described in “CitySafety in crossing traffic” and City Safety brakingfor oncoming vehicles”.
For City Safety to be able to detect a vehicle inthe dark, its headlights and taillights must be onand clearly visible.
Cyclists
Optimal examples of what City Safety would interpret tobe a cyclist: clear body and bicycle shapes.
For optimal performance, the system's functionfor cyclist detection needs the clearest possibleinformation about the contours of the bicycle and

City Safety braking for oncoming
vehicles*
City Safety can help you apply the brakes for anoncoming vehicle in your lane.
If an oncoming vehicle veers into your lane and acollision is unavoidable, City Safety can helpreduce your vehicle's speed to attempt to miti-gate the force of the collision.
Own vehicle
Oncoming vehicles
The following criteria must be met for the func-tion to work:
your vehicle's speed must be above 4 km/h(3 mph)
the road must be straight
your lane must have clear side lane markings
your vehicle must be positioned straight inyour lane
the oncoming vehicle must be positionedwithin your vehicle's lane markings
the oncoming vehicle's headlights must beon
the function can only handle “front-to-front”collisions
the function can only detect vehicles withfour wheels
the function requires functioning ElectricSeat Belt Tensioners* (see section “Seatbelt tensioners”).
NOTE
The function uses the vehicle's combinedcamera and radar unit, which has certain gen-eral limitations; see sections "Camera limita-tions" and "Radar sensor limitations".
WARNING
The "City Safety braking for oncomingvehicles" function is supplementary driversupport intended to help improve drivingsafety – it cannot handle all situations inall traffic, weather and road conditions.
Warnings and brake interventions due toan imminent collision with an oncomingvehicle always come very late.
Never wait for a collision warning or forCity Safety to intervene. If you notice anyhazard or other potentially dangerous sit-uation, always fully apply the brakes.
City Safety is not a substitute for the driv-er's attention and judgment. The driver isalways responsible for ensuring the vehi-cle is driven in a safe manner, at theappropriate speed, with an appropriatedistance to other vehicles, and in accord-ance with current traffic rules and regula-tions.

Rear Collision Warning
The Rear Collision Warning (RCW) function canhelp the driver avoid rear-end collisions fromvehicles approaching from behind.
RCW is automatically activated each time theengine is started.
RCW can warn the driver of a potential collisionwith vehicles approaching from behind by rapidlyflashing the turn signals.
If, at a speed below 30 km/h (20 mph), the RCWfunction detects that the car is in danger of beinghit from behind, the seatbelt tensioners may ten-sion the front seatbelts and activate the WhiplashProtection System safety system.
Immediately before a collision from behind, RCWmay also activate the foot brake in order toreduce the forward acceleration of the car duringthe collision. However, the brakes will only beapplied if your vehicle is stationary. The brakeswill be immediately released if the acceleratorpedal is depressed.

Rear Collision Warning limitations
In some situations, it may be difficult for RCW towarn the driver of a collision risk.
This may be the case if:
the vehicle approaching from the rear isdetected at a late stage
the vehicle approaching from the rearchanges lanes at a late stage
the vehicle approaching from the rear is mov-ing at a speed above 80 km/h (50 mph)
a trailer, bicycle holder or similar is con-nected to the vehicle's electrical system - theRCW function will then be automaticallydeactivated.
NOTE
In certain markets RCW does not warn withthe direction indicators due to local trafficregulations – in such cases, that part of thefunction is deactivated.
NOTE
The warning with direction indicators for RearCollision Warning is deactivated if the colli-sion warning distance in the City Safety func-tion is set to the lowest level "Late".
The seat belt tensioning and braking func-tions remain active.

Starting the vehicle
The vehicle can be started using the start knobin the tunnel console when the remote key is inthe passenger compartment.
Start knob in the tunnel console.
WARNING
Before starting:
Buckle your seat belt.
Adjust the seat, steering wheel and mir-rors.
Make sure you can fully depress thebrake pedal.
The remote key is not physically used to start theignition because the vehicle is equipped with thekeyless Passive Start system.
To start the vehicle:
1.The remote key must be inside the vehicle.For vehicles with Passive Start, the key mustbe in the front section of the passengercompartment. With the optional keyless lock-ing/unlocking function*, the key can be any-where in the vehicle.
2. Press and hold down the brake pedal1 as faras possible.
3. Turn the start knob clockwise and release.The control will automatically return to theoriginal position.
WARNING
Never use more than one inlay mat at atime on the driver's floor. If any other typeof floor mat is used, remove the originalmat from the driver's seat floor beforedriving. All types of mats must be securelyanchored in the attachment points in thefloor. Make sure the floor mat does notimpede the movement of the brake pedalor accelerator pedal in any way, as thiscould be a serious safety hazard.
Volvo's floor mats are specially manufac-tured for your vehicle. They must be prop-erly secured in the attachment points inthe floor to help ensure they cannot slideand become trapped under the pedals.
The starter motor will crank until the enginestarts or until overheating protection is triggered.
During normal start conditions, the vehicle's elec-tric motor will be prioritized and the gasolineengine will remain off. This means that once thestart knob is turned clockwise, the electric motorhas been "started" and the vehicle is ready to bedriven. The warning and information symbols inthe instrument panel will go out and the selectedtheme will be displayed to indicate that the elec-tric motor is activated.
1If the vehicle is moving, it is only necessary to turn the start knob clockwise to start the engine.

Deactivating automatically
1. Fasten your seat belt.
2. Depress the brake pedal firmly.
3. Start the vehicle.
4.Move the gear selector to D or R and pressthe accelerator pedal.
> The parking brake will release and thesymbol in the instrument panel will go out.
NOTE
When the vehicle is initially started, the park-ing brake could disengage automatically evenif the driver's seat belt is not buckled.

Settings for automatically activatingthe parking brake
Choose whether the parking brake should beactivated automatically when the vehicle isswitched off.
This selection is made in the Settings menu inthe center display.
1.Tap Settings in the Top view.
2.Tap My CarParking Brake andSuspension and select or deselect theAuto Activate Parking Brake function.

Parking on a hill
Always use the parking brake when parking on ahill.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when parkingon an incline. Selecting a gear or putting theautomatic transmission in P may not be suffi-cient to keep the vehicle stationary in all sit-uations.
If the vehicle is pointing uphill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointingaway from the curb.
If the vehicle is pointing downhill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointingtoward the curb.
Heavy load uphill
Heavy loads, such as a trailer, could cause thevehicle to roll backward when the parking brakeis released automatically on steep uphill gradi-ents. To help avoid this, pull the control upwardwhile you are driving away. Release the controlwhen the vehicle gains traction.

Auto-hold brakes
With the Auto-hold brake function, the driver canrelease the brake pedal and the brakes willremain applied, for example, when the vehiclehas stopped at a traffic light or intersection.
When the vehicle stops, the brakes are activatedautomatically. The function can use either thenormal brakes or the parking brakes to keep thevehicle stationary and works on flat surfaces orhills. When driving off, the brakes will be automat-ically released if the driver's seat belt is buckled.
NOTE
When braking to a stop on an uphill or down-hill gradient, depress the brake pedal withslightly more force than usual before releas-ing to ensure that the vehicle cannot move atall.
The parking brake is activated if:
the vehicle is switched off
the driver's door is opened
the driver's seat belt is removed
the vehicle has been stationary for a pro-longed period of time (5-10 minutes)

Activating and deactivating Auto-hold at a standstill
The Auto-hold brake function at a standstill isactivated with the button in the tunnel console.
–Press the button in the tunnel console toactivate or deactivate the function.
>The indicator light in the button will illumi-nate when the function is activated. Thefunction will remain active the next timethe vehicle is started.

When shutting off
If the function is active and holding thevehicle stationary using the normalbrakes (A symbol lit), the brake pedalmust be depressed while pressing thebutton in order to deactivate Auto-hold.
The function will remain off until it is reactiva-ted.
When Auto-hold is switched off, Hill StartAssist (HSA) will remain active to help pre-vent the vehicle from rolling backward whenstarting up a hill.

Hill Start Assist
The function for assisting when starting the vehi-cle on inclines, Hill Start Assist (HSA), helpsprevent the vehicle from rolling backward whenstarting on an uphill gradient. When backing upa hill, HSA helps prevent the vehicle from rollingforward.
The function retains pressure from the brakepedal in the brake system for several secondsafter the brake pedal has been released.
This temporary braking effect is released after afew seconds or when the driver begins driving.
Hill Start Assist is available even if the Auto-holdbrake function is switched off.

Braking assist after a collision
In a collision in which the activation level isreached for the pyrotechnic seat belt tensionersor airbags, or if a collision with a large animal isdetected, the vehicle's brakes will be automati-cally activated. This function is intended to helpprevent or reduce the effects of any subsequentcollision.
After a serious collision, it may no longer be pos-sible to control and steer the vehicle. In order toavoid or mitigate a possible further collision witha vehicle or an object in the vehicle's path, thebrake assist system is activated automatically tohelp stop the vehicle safely.
The brake lights and hazard warning flashers areactivated during braking. When the vehicle hasstopped, the hazard warning flashers will con-tinue to flash and the parking brake will beapplied.
If braking is not appropriate, e.g. if there is a riskof being hit by passing traffic, the driver can over-ride the system by depressing the acceleratorpedal.
This function assumes that the brake system isintact after a collision.
Brake assist is part of the Rear Collision Warningand Blind Spot Information safety systems.

Help functions
The system will automatically shift to P:
if the ignition is switched off while D or R isselected.
if the driver unbuckles the seat belt andopens the driver's door while the vehicle isrunning with the gear selector in a gear otherthan P.
To park a vehicle with an unbuckled seat belt andopen door – end P mode by shifting to R or Dagain.
The system will not automatically shift to P if theignition is switched off while the gear selector isin the neutral position (N). This is to make it pos-sible to wash the vehicle in an automatic carwash in which the vehicle is pulled forward onrolling wheels.
Reverse - R
Select R when backing up. The vehicle must bestationary when Reverse is selected.
Neutral - N
No gear is selected and the engine can bestarted. Apply the parking brake if the vehicle isstationary with the gear selector in N.
To move the gear selector from Neutral toanother gear, the brake pedal must be depressedand the ignition in mode II.
D drive mode
D is the normal driving gear position. The trans-mission shifts up or down automatically depend-
ing on acceleration and speed. The vehicle mustbe stationary when the gear selector is movedfrom R to D.
Brake - B
B can be selected at any time during a drive. In Bmode, the engine braking function is activatedwhen the accelerator pedal is released, whichhelps charge the hybrid battery. This offers addi-tional opportunities to recharge the hybrid bat-tery, since the battery is charged even when thebrake pedal is not depressed.
B mode in the instrument panel.
From B mode, it is possible to manually shift tolower gears. The currently selected gear (1-8) willbe displayed in the instrument panel.
Pull the gear selector backward once to shiftdown one gear.
Pull the gear selector backward again to shiftdown to lower gears.
To shift manually to a higher gear, the vehiclemust be equipped with steering wheel paddles*.
Push the gear selector forward to return to Dmode.
For smooth shifting and engine performance, thetransmission will shift down automatically if thevehicle's speed becomes too low for the selectedgear.

Load anchoring eyelets
The load anchoring eyelets in the cargo com-partment can be used to secure objects withstraps, a net, etc.
WARNING
Hard, sharp and/or heavy objects in or pro-truding from the vehicle can cause injury inthe event of hard braking.
Always secure large and heavy objects with aseat belt or cargo retaining straps.

Rear seat ski hatch
The hatch in the rear seat backrest can beopened to transport long, narrow objects suchas skis.
The illustration is generic - details may vary according tovehicle model.
1. In the cargo compartment, grasp the skihatch handle and pull it down.
2.Fold down the armrest in the rear seat.
If the private locking function is used, the skihatch must be closed.

Do not make any repairs on this vehicle your-self. Electrical cables and/or components thathave come loose may only be corrected by anauthorized workshop – an authorized Volvoworkshop is recommended.
Introduction

The Federal Clean Air Act - U.S.
The Federal Clean Air Act requires vehicle manu-facturers to furnish written instructions to the ulti-mate purchaser to assure the proper servicingand function of the components that controlemissions. These services, which are listed in the"Warranty and Service Records Information"booklet, are not covered by the warranty. You willbe required to pay for labor and material used.
Maintenance
Your Volvo passed several major inspectionsbefore it was delivered to you, in accordance withVolvo specifications. The maintenance proce-dures outlined in the Warranty and ServiceRecords Information booklet, many of which willpositively affect your vehicle's emissions, shouldbe performed as indicated. It is recommendedthat receipts for vehicle emission maintenance beretained in case questions arise concerningmaintenance. Inspection and maintenance shouldalso be performed anytime a malfunction isobserved or suspected.
