Important!
Why Volvo believes no child should sit in the front seat of a car. It's quite simple really. A front air
bag is a very powerful device designed, by law, to help protect an adult\
. Because of the size of the air
bag and its speed of inflation, a child should never be placed in the fr\
ont seat, even if he or she is
properly belted or strapped into a child safety seat. Volvo has been an \
innovator in safety for over fifty
years, and we'll continue to do our part. But we need your help. Please \
remember to put your children in
the back seat, and buckle them up.
Volvo has some very specific recommendations:
l Always wear your seat belt.
l Air bags are a SUPPLEMENTAL safety device which, when used with a three-\
point seat belt can
help reduce serious injuries during certain types of accidents. Volvo re\
commends that you do not
disconnect the air bag system in your vehicle.
l Volvo strongly recommends that ALL children sit in the rear seat of any \
vehicle and that they be
properly restrained.
l A child should NEVER sit in the front passenger seat of any vehicle equi\
pped with a passenger-side
front airbag.
l Volvo recommends that ALL occupants (adults and children) shorter than\
four feet seven inches (140
cm) be seated in the back seat of any vehicle with a front passenger si\
de airbag.
Drive safely!
WARNING!
Do not use child safety seats or child booster cushions/backrests in the\
front passenger's seat. We also
recommend that children who have outgrown these devices sit in the rear \
seat with the seat belt
properly fastened.

Child Restraint Anchorages
Volvo cars are fitted with child restraint top tether anchorages in the \
rear seat.
Refer to the child seat manufacturer's instruction for information on se\
curing the child seat. WARNING!
Child Restraint Anchorages are designed to withstand only those loads im\
posed by correctly fitted
Child Restraints. Under no circumstances are they to be used for adult s\
eat belts or harnesses. The
anchorages are not able to withstand excessive forces on them in the eve\
nt of collision if full harness
seat belts or adult seat belts are installed to them. An adult who uses \
a belt anchored in a Child
Restraint Anchorage runs a great risk of suffering severe injuries shoul\
d a collision occur. Do not
install rear speakers which would require the removal of the top tether \
anchors or interfere with the
proper use of the top tether strap.

Isofix fasteners and Seat guides
The Isofix fasteners are installed in the outboard rear seat positions. \
One set of ISOFIX guides is also
provided. Consult your Volvo retailer for more information on child safe\
ty accessories.

Child safety
Volvo recommends the proper use of restraint systems for all occupants i\
ncluding children. Remember
that, regardless of age and size, a child should always be properly rest\
rained in a car.
Your car is also equipped with ISOFIX attachments, which make it more co\
nvenient to install child seats
(see
page 15).
Restraint systems for children are designed to be secured in the vehicle\
by lap belts or the lap portion of
a lap-shoulder belt. Such child restraint systems can help protect child\
ren in cars in the event of an
accident only if they are used properly. However, children could be enda\
ngered in a crash if the child
restraints are not properly secured in the vehicle. Failure to follow th\
e installation instructions for your
child restraint can result in your child striking the vehicle's interior\
in a sudden stop.
Holding a child in your arms is NOT a suitable substitute for a child re\
straint system. In an accident, a
child held in a person's arms can be crushed between the vehicle's inter\
ior and an unrestrained person.
The child could also be injured by striking the interior, or by being ej\
ected from the vehicle during a
sudden maneuver or impact. The same can also happen if the infant or chi\
ld rides unrestrained on the
seat. Other occupants should also be properly restrained to help reduce \
the chance of injuring or
increasing the injury of a child.
All states and provinces have legislation governing how and where childr\
en should be carried in a car.
Find out the regulations existing in your state or province. Recent acci\
dent statistics have shown that
children are safer in rear seating positions than front seating position\
s when properly restrained. A child
restraint system can help protect a child in a vehicle. Here's what to l\
ook for when selecting a child
restraint system:
l It should have a label certifying that it meets applicable Federal Motor\
Vehicle Safety Standards
(FMVSS 213) - or in Canada, CMVSS 213.
l Make sure the child restraint system is approved for the child's height,\
weight and development - the
label required by the standard or regulation, or instructions for infant\
restraints, typically provide this
information.
l In using any child restraint system, we urge you to look carefully over \
the instructions that are

provided with the restraint. Be sure you understand them and can use the\
device properly and
safely in this vehicle. A misused child restraint system can result in i\
ncreased injuries for both the
infant or child and other occupants in the vehicle.
A child who has outgrown the child safety seat should use the rear seat \
with the standard seat belt
fastened. Place the child on an approved cushion so that the seat belt i\
s properly located on the child's
hips (see
page 13).Legislation in your state or province may mandate the use of a child \
seat or cushion in
combination with the seat belt, depending on the child's age and/or size\
. Please check local regulations.
A specially designed and tested booster cushion (not available in Canad\
a ) for children between 50 - 80
lbs (22.7 - 36 kg) and 38 -54 inches (97 - 137 cm) in height can be \
obtained from your Volvo retailer.
If necessary, an auxiliary seat for children is available for use in the\
luggage compartment of station
wagon models. This seat is designed for two children, each weighing betw\
een 50 - 88 lbs. (23 - 40 kg)
and up to 59 inches (150 cm) in height.
WARNING!
l When using the auxiliary seat for children, both sections of the rear se\
at backrest must be secured
in the upright position.
l Do not use a booster cushion or child seat in conjunction with the auxil\
iary seat.

Seat belt maintenance
Check periodically that the seat belts are in good condition. Use water \
and a mild detergent for cleaning.
Check seat belt mechanism function as follows: Attach the seat belt and \
pull rapidly on the strap.

Auto up/down function (front doors only):
Either front door window can be opened or closed automatically.
Auto down: Press the front part of the button as far down as possible and release i\
t immediately. To
stop the window at any time, pull the button up.
Auto up: Pull the front part of the button up as far as possible and release it i\
mmediately. To stop the
window at any time, press the button down.
NOTE: The power windows in the front seat have an overload protecting circuit \
breaker which reverses
movement of the power windows to their starting points, if they are obst\
ructed in any way. Thereafter
the windows will operate normally again. WARNING!
l Always remove the ignition key when the vehicle is unattended.
l Make sure that childrens' hands are clear before raising the
windows.
l Never leave children unattended in the car.

The electrically operated rear door windows can be disabled by a switch \
located on the driver's door (see
illustration).

WARNING!
l Because the driver's seat can be adjusted with the ignition off, childre\
n should never be left
unattended in the car.
l Movement of the seat can be STOPPED at any time by pressing any button o\
n the power seat
control panel.
l Do not adjust the seat while driving. The seat should be adjusted so tha\
t the brake pedal can be
depressed fully. In addition, position the seat as far rearward as comfo\
rt and control allow.
l The seat rails on the floor must not be obstructed in any way when the s\
eat is in motion.
Programming the memory

Three seat positions can be programmed. To program a seat position:
1 Adjust the seat to the desired position.
2 Hold down the MEM button.
3 While holding down the MEM button, press button 1 to program the curren\
t position of the seat.
Buttons 2 and 3 can be programmed in the same way. To move the seat to a\
programmed position, press
and hold down button 1, 2 or 3 until the seat moves to the preset positi\
on and stops.
As a safety precaution, the seat will stop automatically if the button i\
s released before the seat has
reached the programmed position.
NOTE: The seat has an overload protector which engages if an object blocks the\
movement of the seat.
If this happens, remove the object and wait 20 seconds before operating \
the seat again.
* This option is only available on the driver's seat.

Securing cargo
As a safety precaution, your car is equipped with four eyelets in the ca\
rgo space to which straps can be
attached to secure luggage. WARNING!
The eyelets are not to be used as passenger restraints or as anchorages \
for child restraints.
Unless the car is equipped with an optional Volvo auxiliary seat for chi\
ldren, passengers should not
ride in the rear cargo area.
Remember that a 44 lbs object produces a force of 2,200 lbs in a head-on\
collision at 30 mph!

WARNING!
The nylon cargo net must not be used when the optional rear-facing auxil\
iary child seat in the cargo
area is in use.
When not in use, the cargo net should not be stored unattached in the ca\
r to prevent it from being
thrown forward in the event of a sudden stop, etc.
CAUTION:
l If the net is installed in the forward position and the rear seat cushio\
ns are folded forward, the net
should be positioned so that it is in front of the rear seat cushions bu\
t behind the front seat backrests (C).
l The eyelets on the floor of the car under the front seats must not be us\
ed to secure the lower straps of
the cargo net. If these eyelets are used and the front seats are moved b\
ack, the cargo net or upper
brackets may be damaged.
Folding and storing the cargo net
The cargo net can be folded and stored under the floor of the cargo area\
on cars not equipped with the
optional auxiliary rear-facing child seat or the optional bass speaker.
Press the buttons on the hinges at the center of the upper and lower rod\
s. This releases the hinges so that
the net can be folded.

Auxiliary seat (option)
If all the seats are occupied, a rear-facing auxiliary seat in the cargo\
area can be used. This seat is
designed for two children, each weighing between 50 - 88 lbs. (23 - 40 \
kg) with a total seat capacity of
176 lbs. (80 kg) and up to 55 inches (140 cm) in height.
Raising
Remove the cargo area cover, if installed, from the car. Raise the backr\
est section forward until it locks
in place.
Flip the seat cushion over.
Lowering
Flip the seat cushion back into storage position.
Pull the release handle and lower the backrest to storage position. WARNING!
l If your car is equipped with an auxiliary seat (option or accessory), \
the tailgate must be fitted with
a lock cylinder. Unlocking from the outside can then be carried out in t\
he usual way (key in driver's
door and/or remote control) and also by using the key in the tailgate. \
l Both rear seat backrests must be up when the auxiliary seat is being use\
d. Do not use a booster
cushion or child seat in conjunction with the auxiliary seat.
l The luggage net should be retracted and the child safety lock in the tai\
lgate should be open to allow
access to the cargo area.
NOTE: If you have locked the car with the remote control and if you then after\
wards use a key in the
tailgate's lock cylinder (certain models) to unlock the tailgate only,\
the alarm will sound. See
page 80 for
information on turning off a sounding alarm.

If the car is unlocked with the remote, the car will re-lock and the ala\
rm will re-arm after 2 minutes
unless a door or the tailgate has been opened.
* The position of this button may vary, depending on the specifications \
of your car.

The controls are located on the rear door jambs. Use a screwdriver to ad\
just these controls.
A The door cannot be opened from the inside. Normal operation from the out\
side.
B The door lock functions normally. WARNING!
Remember, in the event of an accident, the rear seat passengers cannot o\
pen the doors from the inside
with the buttons in position A.
