Top tether anchors
Volvo vehicles are equipped with child restraint top tether anchorages i\
n all rear seat positions.
Using the top tether anchorages
1. Place the child restraint on the rear seat.
2. Route the top tether strap under the head restraint and fasten its at\
tachment to the anchorage.
WARNING!
Be sure to fasten the child tether attachment correctly to the anchor. I\
f it is not correctly fastened, the
child seat may not be properly restrained in the event of a collision.
3. Firmly tension the top tether strap according to the child restraint \
manufacturer's instructions. Tension
the top tether strap only after the lower anchor straps or the seat belt\
have been firmly tensioned.
See
page 38 for on securing the child restraint to ISOFIX lower anchors.
NOTE:
l Child restraints could be recalled for safety reasons. You must register\
your child restraint to be
reached in a recall. To stay informed about child safety seat recalls, b\
e sure to fill out and return the
registration card that comes with new child restraints.
Child restraint recall information is readily available in both the U.S.\
and Canada. For recall information
in the U.S., call the U.S. Government's Auto Safety Hotline at 1-800- 42\
4-9393. In Canada, visit
Transport Canada's Child Safety website at
http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/childsafety/menu.htm.

WARNING!
l Never route a top tether strap over the top or around the head restraint\
. It should always be routed
under the head restraint.
l Child restraint anchorages are designed to withstand only those loads im\
posed by correctly fitted
child restraints. Under no circumstances are they to be used for adult s\
eat belts or harnesses. The
anchorages are not able to withstand excessive forces on them in the eve\
nt of collision if full harness
seat belts or adult seat belts are installed to them. An adult who uses \
a belt anchored in a child
restraint anchorage runs a great risk of suffering severe injuries shoul\
d a collision occur.
l Do not install rear speakers that require the removal of the top tether \
anchors or interfere with the
proper use of the top tether strap.

Integrated booster cushion
Integrated booster cushion (option)
Volvo's own integrated booster cushion has been specially designed to he\
lp safeguard a child seated in
the center position of the rear seat. When using the integrated booster \
cushion, the child must be secured
with the vehicle's three-point seat belt.
Use this booster cushion only with children who weigh between 33 and 80 \
lbs (15 and 36 kg) and whose
height is between 38 and 54 in (97 and 137 cm). In Canada, Transport C\
anada's weight recommendation
is 40-80 lbs (18-36 kg).
The booster cushion is designed to raise the child higher, so that the s\
houlder strap crosses over the
child's collarbone, not over the child's neck. If using a booster cushio\
n does not result in proper
positioning of the shoulder strap, then the child should be placed in a \
properly secured child restraint
(see the information beginning on
page 31). The shoulder belt must never be placed behind the child's

back or under the arm.
WARNING!
l DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur.
l Follow all instructions on the booster cushion and in the vehicle's owne\
r's manual.
l MAKE SURE THE BOOSTER CUSHION IS SECURELY LOCKED BEFORE THE CHILD IS
SEATED.
l Use this booster cushion only with children who weigh between 33 and 80 \
lbs (15 and 36 kg) and
whose height is between 38 and 54 in (97 and 137 cm). In Canada, Trans\
port Canada's weight
recommendation is 40-80 lbs (18-36 kg).
WARNING!
In the event of a collision while the integrated booster cushion was occ\
upied, the entire booster
cushion and seat belt must be replaced. The booster cushion should also \
be replaced if it is badly
worn or damaged in any way. This work should be performed by an authoriz\
ed Volvo retailer only.
Canada only: This cushion may be referred to as a built-in booster cushi\
on.

Extending the cargo area
NOTE: Make sure that the holes in the plastic ferrules on the top of the back\
rest engage the hooks on
the bottom of the seat cushion.
When you later raise the backrest and seat cushion, the head restraints \
must be returned to their normal
positions.
WARNING!
l The red lock indicator is not visible when the backrest is correctly loc\
ked in place.
l The red lock indicator IS VISIBLE when the backrest is NOT locked in pos\
ition (see the
illustration on the previous page).
l The backrest must be securely locked when it is returned to the upright \
position. The word
"UNLOCKED" on the lock indicator should not be visible.
l When the rear seat is folded down, do not place heavy objects against th\
e backs of the front seats.
This places a severe strain on the folded down backrest of the rear seat\
.
l Be sure to secure cargo. Cargo must not be stacked higher than the top o\
f seat backs. This will
reduce the possibility of luggage, etc. becoming projectiles during sudd\
en maneuvers, rapid braking
or an accident.

he normal position as described in
the right column.
Partition with storage pockets (accessory)
A partition with storage pockets is available as an accessory on V70 mod\
els with a 3- section rear seat.
This partition can help prevent objects in the cargo area from being thr\
own forward when the center
section of the backrest is not in the upright position.
Please refer to the installation instructions that are included with the\
partition or consult your Volvo
retailer.
Returning the center section of the backrest to its normal position
- Before the center section is put back in place, the right section of t\
he backrest must be locked in the
upright position.
- Replace the backrest by pressing the bottom section onto the retaining\
bar until the backrest clicks into
place.
- Fold up the backrest until it is securely locked in place.
WARNING!
l For safety reasons, the center section of the backrest or seat cushion s\
hould not be left in the
vehicle after they have been removed.
l Please be aware that with the center section of the backrest removed, un\
anchored objects in the rear
cargo area could be thrown forward between the outboard sections of the \
backrest in the event of a
sudden stop.
l When the center section of the backrest is put back in place, the right-\
hand section of the backrest
must be in the upright position in order to lock the center section secu\
rely in place and to be able to
use the center seat belt.

WARNING!
l If your vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary seat (option or accessory\
), the tailgate must be fitted
with a lock cylinder. Unlocking from the outside can then be carried out\
in the usual way (key in
driver's door and/or remote control) and also by using the key in the t\
ailgate.
l All rear seat backrests must be up when the auxiliary seat is being used\
.
l The auxiliary seat's head restraint(s) should be properly positioned t\
o help provide the best support.
l The seat belt(s) should be properly fastened.
l The accessory steel cargo grid should never be mounted in the vehicle wh\
en the auxiliary seat is
used. See
page 104 for instructions on removing the steel grid.
l The luggage net should be retracted.
l The child safety lock in the tailgate should be on to prevent children f\
rom inadvertently opening
the tailgate from the inside.
l Failure to follow each of the instructions above will increase the risk \
of occupants being injured
during a sudden stop or collision.

Securing cargo
As a safety precaution, your vehicle is equipped with four eyelets in th\
e cargo space to which straps can
be attached to secure luggage.
WARNING!
l The eyelets for securing cargo are not to be used as passenger restraint\
s or as anchorages for child
restraints.
l Unless the vehicle is equipped with an optional Volvo auxiliary seat for\
children, passengers
should not ride in the rear cargo area.
Keep the following in mind when loading the vehicle
The load carrying capacity of your vehicle is determined by factors such\
as the number of passengers,
the amount of cargo, the weight of any accessories that may be installed\
, etc. See the section "Vehicle
loading" in the chapter "Wheels and tires" for more detailed information\
.
l Remember that a 44 lbs object produces a force of 2,200 lbs in a head-on\
collision at 30 mph.
