Starting the vehicle

NOTE
Your vehicle is equipped with a KEYLOCK
system. When the engine is switched off, the gear selector must be in the P position
before the key can be removed from theignition switch. When starting in cold weather, the trans- mission may shift up at slightly higherengine speeds than normal until the auto-matic transmission fluid reaches normaloperating temperature.
NOTE
Do not race a cold engine immediately after starting. Oil flow may not reach somelubrication points fast enough to preventengine damage.
WARNING
Always place the gear selector in Park and apply the parking brake before leaving thevehicle. Never leave the vehicle unatten-ded with the engine running.
• Always open garage doors fully before starting the engine inside a garage toensure adequate ventilation. Theexhaust gases contain carbon monox-ide, which is invisible and odorless butvery poisonous.
CAUTION
Automatic transmission
• The engine should be idling when you move the gear selector. Never acceler-ate until after you feel the transmissionengage! Accelerating immediately afterselecting a gear will cause harshengagement and premature transmis-sion wear.
• Selecting
P or N when idling at a
standstill for prolonged periods of timewill help prevent overheating of theautomatic transmission fluid.

0 – Locked position: Remove the key to lock the steering wheelA

I – Intermediate posi- tion B
– "radio position":
Certain accessories, radio, etc. on, daytimerunning lights off.
II – Drive position: The
key position when driv- ing. The vehicle's entireelectrical system is con-nected.
III – Start position: Release the key when the engine starts. Thekey returns automaticallyto the Drive position.
A chime will sound if the key is left in the ignition and the driver's door is opened.
A The gear selector must be in the P (Park) position (auto-
matic transmission).
B Please be aware that leaving the key in this position will increase battery drain.
AutostartThis function makes it possible to start the vehicle without holding the key in the startposition (position III) until the engine starts.
Turn the key to position III and release it. The
starter motor will then operate automatically(for up to ten seconds) until the engine starts.
Steering wheel lockThe steering wheel lock might be under ten-sion when the vehicle is parked. Turn the steering wheel slightly to free the ignition key. In order to help reduce vehicle theft, make sure the steering wheel lock is engagedbefore leaving the vehicle.
WARNING
Never switch off the ignition (turn the igni- tion key to position 0) or remove the key
from the ignition switch while the vehicle isin motion. This could cause the steeringwheel to lock, which would make the vehi-cle impossible to steer.

system’s compressor. If necessary, release air from the tire by turning the airrelease knob counterclockwise.
CAUTION
The compressor should not be used for more than 10 minutes at a time to avoidoverheating.
WARNING
If you interrupt your trip for more than 1 hour, check the inflation pressure in thedamaged tire again before continuing.
Replacing the sealing compound container
The sealing compound container must be replaced if:• the tire sealing system has been used to repair a tire
• the container’s expiration date haspassed (see the date on decal).
NOTE
• After use, the sealing compound bot- tle, the hose, and certain other systemcomponents must be replaced. Pleaseconsult your Volvo retailer for replace-ment parts.
• If the sealing compound bottle’s expi-ration date has passed, please take itto a Volvo retailer or a recycling stationthat can properly dispose of harmfulsubstances.
Inflating tires
The tire sealing system can be used to inflate the tires. To do so:
1. Park the car in a safe place.
2. The compressor should be switched off.
Ensure that the on/off switch is in position 0 (the 0 side of the switch should be
pressed down).
3. Take out the electrical wire and hose.
4. Remove the valve cap from the tire’s inflation valve and screw the hose con- nector onto the valve as tightly as possi-ble by hand.
5. Connect the electrical wire to the nearest 12-volt socket in the vehicle. 6. Start the vehicle’s engine.
WARNING
•
The vehicle’s engine should be running when the tire sealing system is used toavoid battery drain. Therefore, be surethe vehicle is parked in a well ventilatedplace, or outdoors, before using thesystem. The parking brake should besecurely applied and the gear selectorshould be in the
P (park) position.
• Children should never be left unatten-ded in the vehicle when the engine isrunning.
7. Check the tire’s inflation pressure on the
gauge. Switch off the compressor briefly to get a clear reading from the pressuregauge.
8. Refer to the tire inflation tables for the correct inflation pressure. If the tire needsto be inflated, start the tire sealing sys-tem’s compressor (press the on/offswitch to position I). If necessary, releaseair from the tire by turning the air releaseknob counterclockwise.

Jack attachment points
Jack attachmentsThere are two attachment points for the jack on each side of the vehicle. These attachmentpoints are under the center of each door.
WARNING
There is an attachment point on each side of the vehicle located under the pillarsbetween the front and rear doors. Thispoint is used during the production proc-ess only, and is NOT intended for attach-ing the jack.

The undersides of accessory running boards are not intended for attaching thejack.
Changing a wheel1. Park the vehicle on a firm, level, non-slip-pery surface.
2. Engage the parking brake and put the gear selector in the Park position.
3. Loosen the wheel bolts by exerting down- ward pressure on the lug wrench. 4. Remove the wheel cover (where applica-
ble) using the lug wrench in the tool bag.
5. With the wheels still on the ground, use the lug wrench to loosen the wheel bolts ½ – 1 turn. Turn the bolts counterclock-wise to loosen the bolts.

6. Place the jack on the ground, under oneof the attachment points (see the illustra- tion) and crank while simultaneously guid-ing the jack's attachment bracket ontothe attachment point (see illustration) Thebase of the jack must be flat on a level,firm, non-slippery surface. Before raising

Washing
•The vehicle should be washed at regular intervals since dirt, dust, insects and tarspots adhere to the paint and may causedamage. It is particularly important towash the vehicle frequently in the winter-time to prevent corrosion, when salt hasbeen used on the roads.
• When washing the vehicle, do not exposeit to direct sunlight. Use lukewarm waterto soften the dirt before you wash with asponge, and plenty of water, to avoidscratching.
• Bird droppings: Remove from paintworkas soon as possible. Otherwise the finishmay be permanently damaged.
• A detergent can be used to facilitate thesoftening of dirt and oil.
CAUTION
Chromed wheels
: Clean chrome-plated
wheels using the same detergents used for the body of the vehicle. Aggressive wheelcleaning agents can permanently stainchrome-plated wheels.
• Dry the vehicle with a clean chamois and remember to clean the drain holes in thedoors and rocker panels.
• Tar spots can be removed with tarremover after the vehicle has beenwashed.
• A stiff-bristle brush and lukewarm soapywater can be used to clean the wiperblades. Frequent cleaning of the wind-shield and wiper blades improves visibilityconsiderably and also helps prolong theservice life of the wiper blades.
• Wash off the dirt from the underside(wheel housings, fenders, etc.).
• In areas of high industrial fallout, morefrequent washing is recommended.
Suitable detergentsSpecial vehicle washing detergents should be used. A suitable mixture is about 2.5 fl. oz.(8.5 cl) of detergent to 2.6 US gal. (10 liters) ofwarm water. After washing with a detergentthe vehicle should be well rinsed with cleanwater.
CAUTION
•Avoid waxing or polishing plastic or rubber components
• Polishing chromed strips can wearaway or damage the surface
• Polishes containing abrasive sub-stances should not be used
CAUTION
•Dirt, snow, etc., on the headlights can reduce lighting capacity considerably.Clean the headlights regularly, forexample when refueling.
• During high pressure washing, thespray mouthpiece must never becloser to the vehicle than 13 " (30 cm).Do not spray into the locks.
Special moonroof cautions:
• Always close the moonroof and sunshade before washing your vehicle.
• Never use abrasive cleaning agents onthe moonroof.
• Never use wax on the rubber sealsaround the moonroof.
