How do states use OBD II for emission
inspections?
Many states connect a computer directly to avehicle's OBD II system. The inspector can thenread "faults." In some states, this type of inspec-tion has replaced the tailpipe emission test.

How can my vehicle fail OBD II emission
inspection?
Your vehicle can fail OBD II emission inspectionfor any of the following reasons.
•If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit, yourvehicle may fail inspection.
•If your vehicle's Check Engine light was lit,but went out without any action on your part,OBD II will still have a recorded fault. Yourvehicle may pass or fail, depending on theinspection practices in your area.
•If you had recent service that required dis-connecting the battery, OBD II diagnosticinformation may be incomplete and "notready" for inspection. A vehicle that is notready may fail inspection.

How can I prepare for my next OBD II
emission inspection?
•If your Check Engine (MIL) light is lit – or waslit but went out without service, have your
vehicle diagnosed and, if necessary, servicedby a qualified Volvo technician.
•If you recently had service for a lit CheckEngine light, or if you had service thatrequired disconnecting the battery, a periodof driving is necessary to bring the OBD IIsystem to "ready" for inspection. Two half-hour trips of mixed stop-and-go/highwaydriving are typically needed to allow OBD II toreach readiness. Your Volvo retailer can pro-vide you with more information on planning atrip.
•Maintain your vehicle in accordance with yourvehicle's maintenance schedule.
Owner maintenance
Periodic maintenance requirements and intervalsare described in your vehicle's Warranty andService Records Information booklet.
The following points can be carried out betweenthe normally scheduled maintenance services.

Each time the car is refueled:
•Check the engine oil level.
•Clean the windshield, windshield wipers,headlights, and taillights.
Monthly:
•Check cold tire pressure in all tires. Inspectthe tires for wear.
•Check that engine coolant and other fluidlevels are between the indicated "min" and"max" markings.
•Clean interior glass surfaces with a glasscleaner and soft paper towels.
•Wipe driver information displays with a softcloth.
•Visually inspect battery terminals for corro-sion. Corrosion may indicate a loose terminalconnector, or a battery near the end of itsuseful service life. Consult your Volvo retailerfor additional information.

As needed:
Wash the car, including the undercarriage, toreduce wear that can be caused by a buildup ofdirt, and corrosion that can be caused by salt res-idues.
Clean leaves and twigs from air intake vents atthe base of the windshield, and from other placeswhere they may collect.

Keep in mind that a download can be cancelledbut an installation that has already begun cannotbe interrupted.

Allowing background searches or
software updates
This function can be deactivated from the centerdisplay:
1. Go to the Settings in the center display's Topview and select Download Center.
2.Tap SystemDownload Center.
3.Tap to deselect Auto Software Update.
If an update is available, New software updatesavailable will appear in the center display's sta-tus bar. Tap the message to start a download appin Home view's lower sub-view. As soon as thedownload app has started, an icon in the Systemupdates button will indicate the number ofdownloads available.

Remote updates
With the vehicle connected to the Internet,updates for a number of the vehicle's systemscan be downloaded from the center display.
The Download Center app isstarted from the center dis-play's App view and makes itpossible to:

•Always switch off the ignition before star-ting to replace a bulb.
•If an error message remains in the dis-play after a faulty bulb has been replaced,contact an authorized Volvo workshop.
•Condensation may form temporarily onthe inside of the lenses of exterior lightssuch as headlights, fog lights, or taillights.This is normal and the lights aredesigned to withstand moisture. Normally,condensation will dissipate after thelights have been on for a short time.
•The optional Active Bending Light bulbscontain trace amounts of mercury. Thesebulbs should always be disposed of by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
CAUTION
Never touch the glass of bulbs with your fin-gers. Grease and oils from your fingers vapor-ize in the heat and will leave a deposit on thereflector, which will damage it.

WARNING
•The ignition should be switched off com-pletely (be in ignition mode 0) whenreplacing bulbs.
•If the engine has been running just priorto replacing bulbs in the headlight hous-ing, please keep in mind that componentsin the engine compartment will be hot.

On models with halogen headlights, the lowbeam headlight bulb can be replaced by theowner.
Before the bulb can be replaced, the plastic cov-ering over the headlight housing has to beremoved, see the article "Replacing bulbs."

1. Remove the low beam round rubber coverfrom the headlight housing.
2.Remove the connector from the bulb.
3. Remove the bulb by pressing it slightlyupward and then pulling it out.
4. Insert the bulb in the socket. The bulb's guid-ing pin should point straight up.
5. Press the connector into place.
6. Put the rubber cover back into place.

Replacing High Beam headlightbulbs
On models with halogen headlights, the HighBeam headlight bulb can be replaced by theowner.
Before the bulb can be accessed, the headlighthousing's rectangular cover must be removed,see the article "Removing the rectangular head-light cover."

CAUTION
Never touch the glass of bulbs with your fin-gers. Grease and oils from your fingers vapor-ize in the heat and will leave a deposit on thereflector, which will damage it.

1. Remove the bulb by turning the bulb holderupward and then pulling it straight out.
2.Carefully pry the plastic sleeve by the con-nector's locking lug to release it.
3. Remove the connector from the bulb.
4. Insert a new bulb.
5. Insert the bulb in the socket and turn itdownward.

Replacing parking light bulbs
On models with halogen headlights, the frontparking light bulb can be replaced by the owner.
Before the bulb can be accessed, the headlighthousing's rectangular cover must be removed,see the article "Removing the rectangular head-light cover."
Remove the high beam bulb first by turning thebulb holder upward and then pulling it straightout. This makes it easier to access the parkinglight bulb.

2.Remove the bulb by pulling it straight out.
3. Insert a new bulb.
4. Insert the bulb holder in the socket andpress it into place.

•Not checking the oil level regularly canresult in serious engine damage if the oillevel becomes too low.
•Oil that is lower than the specified qualitycan damage the engine.
•Volvo does not recommend the use of oiladditives.
•Always add oil of the same type and vis-cosity as already used.
•Oil changes should be carried out by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
•Using oil of higher than the specifiedquality is permitted and may be neces-sary for demanding driving.

The oil level is checked electronically.
Oil filler cap6
It may be necessary to top up engine oil betweenregularly scheduled services.
No action is necessary until a message is dis-played in the instrument panel.
WARNING
•Do not allow oil to spill onto or come intocontact with hot exhaust pipe surfaces.
•If Engine oil level Service required isdisplayed, have the vehicle checked by atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian. The oil level may be too high.
Checking the oil level
The oil level can be checked inthe center display when theengine is not running.
From the center display'sHome view, swipe the screenfrom right to left to open Appview. Tap Car status and then tap Status toshow the oil level.

The oil level should be checked at regular inter-vals, particularly during the period up to the firstscheduled maintenance service.
If the oil level sensor indicates that the level istoo low, using the correct oil, top up with theamount of oil indicated as soon as possible.

NOTE
•The system cannot detect changes in theoil level immediately. The vehicle must bedriven approximately 20 miles (30 km) orhave been parked on level ground withthe engine off for 5 minutes before theoil level reading will be correct.
•If the necessary conditions are not metfor checking the oil level electronically(time interval after the engine wasswitched off, if the vehicle is parked onan incline, etc.), No values available willbe displayed. This does not indicate aproblem with the oil level sensor.

Windshield wipers in the serviceposition
The windshield wiper blades must be in the verti-cal (service) position for replacement, washingor to lift them away from the windshield whene.g., removing ice or snow.

Be sure the wiper blades are not frozen inposition before attempting to move them tothe service position.

Putting the windshield wipers in the
service position
The service position can be activated while thevehicle is stationary and the wipers are not acti-vated.
The service position can be activated in two waysfrom the center display:
Via Function view
–From Function view, tap the Wiper ServicePosition button. The indicator light in thebutton will illuminate when the service posi-tion is activated.
>The windshield wipers will move to thevertical position.

Via Settings
1.Tap Settings in the center display's Topview.
2.Tap My CarWipers
3.Tap the Wiper Service Position box.
>The windshield wipers will move to thevertical position.
