PRE-OPERATION CHECKS
EBU19226Inspect your vehicle each time you use it to make sure the vehicle is in safe operating condition. Always
follow the inspection and maintenance procedures and schedules described in the Owner’s Manual.
WARNING
EWB00482Failure to inspect or maintain the vehicle properly increases the possibility of an accident or equip-
ment damage. Do not operate the vehicle if you find any problem. If a problem cannot be corrected
by the procedures provided in this manual, have the vehicle inspected by a Yamaha dealer. Before using this vehicle, check the following points:

Front brake• Check operation. If soft or spongy, have Yamaha dealer bleed hy-
draulic system.
• Check brake pads for wear, and replace if necessary.
• Check brake fluid level in reservoir, and add specified brake fluid to specified level if necessary.
• Check hydraulic system for leakage. Correct if necessary. 5-3, 8-43, 8-44, 8-46

Check that there is no free play in the front and
rear brake levers. If there is free play, have a
Yamaha dealer check the brake system.
 Check for correct free play in the brake pedal. If
the free play is incorrect, adjust it. (See page
8-47.)
 Check the operation of the brake levers and
pedal. They should move smoothly and there
should be a firm feeling when the brakes are ap-
plied. If not, have a Yamaha dealer check the
brake system.
Brake fluid level
Check the brake fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.

5Brake fluid leakage
Check to see if any brake fluid is leaking out of the
pipe joints or brake fluid reservoirs. Apply the
brakes firmly for one minute. If a lever moves
slowly inward, there may be a leak in the brake
system. If there is any leakage, the brake system
should be checked by a Yamaha dealer.
Brake operation
Test the brakes at slow speed after starting out to
make sure they are working properly. If the brakes
do not provide proper braking performance,
check the brake pads for wear. (See page 8-43.)
EBU19762Throttle leverCheck the operation of the throttle lever. It must
open smoothly and spring back to the idle position
when released. Have a Yamaha dealer correct if
necessary.
EBU38062TiresCheck and adjust the tire pressure before each
ride. Check tires for wear and damage.
Tire pressure
A low-pressure tire gauge is included as standard
equipment. Make two measurements of the tire
pressure and use the second reading. Dust or dirt
in the gauge could cause the first reading to be in-
correct.

Tire pressure must be checked and set when the
tires are cold. The tire pressure should be the
same on both sides, and must be adjusted ac-
cording to vehicle loading conditions. Set the tire
pressure as specified below.
WARNING! Opera-
tion of this vehicle with improper tire pressure
may cause severe injury or death from loss of
control or rollover. Tire pressure below the
minimum specified could also cause the tire to
dislodge from the rim under severe driving
conditions.

5Tire inspection
When the tire tread depth has worn to 3 mm (0.12
in) replace the tire. If the tire has a nail or glass
fragments in it, or if the sidewall is cracked, re-
place the tire.
Tire information
This ATV is equipped with tubeless tires and tire
air valves. After extensive tests, only the tires list-
ed below are approved for this model by Yamaha.
With cargo or trailer:
Front: (Recommended)50.0 kPa (0.500 kgf/cm², 7.3 psi)
Rear: (Recommended) 50.0 kPa (0.500 kgf/cm², 7.3 psi)

vent any loss of control, which could cause an

off system. To enable starting one of the following
conditions must be met:
The drive select lever is in the neutral or park po-
sition.
 The rear brake lever or brake pedal is applied.TIPIt is recommended to shift into neutral or park and
apply the rear brake when starting the engine.

prior to operating the engine for the first time. To start the engine
1. Turn the key to “ ” (on) and the engine stop switch to “ ” (run).
The battery voltage warning light, the cool-
ant temperature warning light, and the en-
gine trouble warning light should come on
for a few seconds, then go off.
 The electric power steering warning light
should come on and stay on until the en-

circuit.
3. Apply the rear brake lever or brake pedal.
4. Completely close the throttle lever, then push the start switch to crank the engine with the
starter. Release the start switch when the en-
gine has started.
TIPIf the engine fails to start, release the start switch.
Wait a few seconds before the next cranking at-
tempt to allow battery voltage to restore. Do not
crank the engine more than 10 seconds on any
single attempt. NOTICEECB00164For maximum engine life, never accelerate
hard when the engine is cold!
