Quick shift systemThe quick shift system allows for
full-throttle, clutch lever-less upshifts.
When the shift switch detects motion in
the shift pedal, engine power and drive
torque are momentarily adjusted to al-
low the upshift to occur.TIPThe quick shift system operates when
traveling at least 20 km/h (12 mi/h) with
an engine speed of 2000 r/min or high-
er, and only when accelerating. It does
not operate when the clutch lever ispulled.NOTICE
ECA26260
To prevent drivetrain damage, al-
ways use the clutch lever to shift
when riding at slow speed, when
downshifting, or if the quick shiftsystem is off.

the seat. (See page 4-22.)
Also, an additional tool kit was handed
out separately at the time of vehicle
purchase.
The information included in this manual
and the tools provided in the tool kit are
intended to assist you in the perfor-
mance of preventive maintenance and
minor repairs. However, a torque
wrench and other tools are necessary
to perform certain maintenance work
correctly.TIPIf you do not have the tools or experi- ence required for a particular job, have
your Yamaha dealer perform it for you.

Checking the spark plugsThe spark plugs are important engine
components, which should be checked
periodically, preferably by a Yamaha
dealer. Since heat and deposits will
cause any spark plug to slowly erode,
they should be removed and checked
in accordance with the periodic mainte-
nance and lubrication chart. In addition,
the condition of the spark plugs can re-
veal the condition of the engine.
The porcelain insulator around the cen-
ter electrode of each spark plug should
be a medium-to-light tan (the ideal color
when the vehicle is ridden normally),
and all spark plugs installed in the en-
gine should have the same color. If any
spark plug shows a distinctly different
color, the engine could be operating im-
properly. Do not attempt to diagnose
such problems yourself. Instead, have
a Yamaha dealer check the vehicle.
If a spark plug shows signs of electrode
erosion and excessive carbon or other
deposits, it should be replaced. Before installing a spark plug, the spark
plug gap should be measured with a
wire thickness gauge and, if necessary,
adjusted to specification.
Clean the surface of the spark plug
gasket and its mating surface, and then
wipe off any grime from the spark plug
threads.
NOTICE
ECA10841
Do not use any tools to remove or in-
stall the spark plug cap, otherwise
the ignition coil coupler may get
damaged. The spark plug cap may
be difficult to remove because the
rubber seal on the end of the cap fits
tightly. To remove the spark plug
cap, simply twist it back and forth
while pulling it out; to install it, twistit back and forth while pushing it in.

TIPAn oil filter wrench is available at aYamaha dealer.
5. Apply a thin coat of clean engine oil to the O-ring of the new oil filter
cartridge.
TIPMake sure that the O-ring is properlyseated.

7. Install the engine oil drain bolt and
its new gasket, and then tighten
the bolt to the specified torque.
8. Refill with the specified amount of the recommended engine oil.
TIPWipe off any spilled oil before startingthe engine.
9. Check the O-ring for damage, and then install the oil filler cap. 10. Start the engine and let it idle for
several minutes while checking for
oil leakage. If any leakage is
found, immediately stop the en-
gine and check for the cause.
TIPAfter the engine is started, the oil pres-
sure warning light should go off if the oillevel is sufficient.NOTICE
ECA20860
If the oil pressure warning light flick-
ers or remains on even if the oil level
is correct, immediately turn the en-
gine off and have a Yamaha dealer
check the vehicle.
11. Turn the engine off, wait a few min- utes until the oil settles, and then
check the oil level one last time.

nut on each side of the swingarm.
2. To tighten the drive chain, turn the drive chain slack adjusting bolt on
each side of the swingarm in direc-
tion (a). To loosen the drive chain,
turn the adjusting bolt on each side
of the swingarm in direction (b),
and then push the rear wheel for-
ward.
TIPUsing the alignment marks on each
side of the swingarm, make sure that
both drive chain pullers are in the sameposition for proper wheel alignment. 3. Tighten the axle nut, then the lock-
nuts to their specified torques.
4. Make sure that the drive chain pull- ers are in the same position, the
drive chain slack is correct, and
the drive chain moves smoothly.
EAU23026
Cleaning and lubricating the
drive chainThe drive chain must be cleaned and
lubricated at the intervals specified in
the periodic maintenance and lubrica-
tion chart, otherwise it will quickly wear
out, especially when riding in dusty or
wet areas. Service the drive chain as
follows.NOTICE
ECA10584
The drive chain must be lubricated
after washing the motorcycle, ridingin the rain or riding in wet areas.
1. Clean the drive chain with kero- sene and a small soft brush.
NOTICE: To prevent damaging
the O-rings, do not clean the
drive chain with steam cleaners,
high-pressure washers or inap-
propriate solvents.
[ECA11122]
2. Wipe the drive chain dry.
3. Thoroughly lubricate the drive chain with a special O-ring chain
lubricant. NOTICE: Do not use
engine oil or any other lubri-
cants for the drive chain, as they
