TachometerThe tachometer shows the engine
speed in crankshaft revolutions per
minute (r/min).
When the vehicle power is turned on,
the tachometer needle will sweep
across the r/min range and return to
zero in order to test the electrical cir-

Drive mo
de display
This display indicates which drive
mode has been selected: “S” sporty or
“T” touring. (See page 4-3.)
V- belt replacement in dicator This indicator flashes every 20000 km
(12500 mi) when the V-belt needs to be
replaced.
After changing the V-belt, reset the V-
belt replacement indicator. (See page
5-13.)
TIPIf the V-belt is changed before the V-
belt replacement indicator flashes, the
indicator must be reset in order for the
next periodic V-belt change to be indi-
cated at the correct time.Oil chan
ge in dicator This indicator flashes at the initial 1000
km (600 mi), then at 5000 km (3000 mi)
and every 5000 km (3000 mi) thereafter
to indicate that the engine oil should be
changed.
After changing the engine oil, reset the
oil change indicator. (See page 5-13.)
TIPIf the engine oil is changed before the
oil change indicator flashes, the indica-
tor must be reset in order for the next
periodic oil change to be indicated at

in the life of your engine than the period
between 0 and 1600 km (1000 mi). For
this reason, you should read the fol-
lowing material carefully.
Since the engine is brand new, do not
put an excessive load on it for the first
1600 km (1000 mi). The various parts in
the engine wear and polish themselves
to the correct operating clearances.
During this period, prolonged full-throt-
tle operation or any condition that
might result in engine overheating
must be avoided.

 The engine air filter uses a disposable oil-coated paper element. This element cannot be cleaned with compressed air,
doing so will only damage it.
 If you often ride in the rain or in dusty areas, have the engine air filter and V-belt air filter elements serviced more fre-
quently.
Hydraulic brake service  Regularly check the brake fluid levels in the reservoirs, and refill as necessary.
 Replace the internal components of the brake master cylinders and calipers, and change the brake fluid every 2 years.

TIPIf a torque wrench is not available
when installing a spark plug, a good
estimate of the correct torque is 1/4–
1/2 turn past finger tight. However, the
spark plug should be tightened to the
specified torque as soon as possible.

CanisterThis model is equipped with a canister
to prevent the discharging of fuel vapor
into the atmosphere. Before operating
this vehicle, make sure to check the
following:
 Check each hose connection.
 Check each hose and canister for
cracks or damage. Replace if
damaged.
 Make sure that the canister
breather is not blocked, and if
necessary, clean it.

Engine oil an d oil filter car-
tri dg eThe engine oil level should be checked
before each ride. In addition, the oil
must be changed and the oil filter car-
tridge replaced at the intervals speci-
fied in the periodic maintenance and
lubrication chart.
To check the en gine oil level
1. Place the vehicle on the center- stand. A slight tilt to the side can
result in a false reading.
2. Start the engine, warm it up for two minutes, and then turn it off.
3. Wait two minutes until the oil level settles.
4. Check the oil level through the check window located at the bot-
tom-left side of the crankcase.TIPThe engine oil should be between the
minimum and maximum level marks.

5. If the engine oil is below the mini-
mum level mark, add sufficient oil
of the recommended type to raise
it to the correct level.
To chan ge the en gine oil (an d re-
place the oil filter cartri dge)
1. Place the vehicle on a level sur- face.
2. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it
off.
3. Place an oil pan under the engine to collect the used oil. 4. Remove the engine oil filler cap,
and then the engine oil drain bolt
and its gasket.
5. Check the O-ring for damage and replace it if necessary.
TIPSkip steps 6–8 if the oil filter cartridge
is not being replaced.6. Remove the oil filter cartridge withan oil filter wrench.TIPAn oil filter wrench is available at a
Yamaha dealer.7. Apply a thin coat of clean engineoil to the O-ring of the new oil filter
cartridge.
