PRE-OPERATION CHECKS
EBU19226Inspect your vehicle each time you use it to make sure the vehicle is in safe operating condition. Always
follow the inspection and maintenance procedures and schedules described in the Owner’s Manual.
WARNING
EWB00482Failure to inspect or maintain the vehicle properly increases the possibility of an accident or equip-
ment damage. Do not operate the vehicle if you find any problem. If a problem cannot be corrected
by the procedures provided in this manual, have the vehicle inspected by a Yamaha dealer. Before using this vehicle, check the following points:
ITEMROUTINE PAGE
Fuel • Check fuel level in fuel tank,
and add recommended fuel if neces-
sary.
• Check fuel line for leakage. Correct if necessary. 4-9, 5-3
Engine oil • Check oil level in engine, and add recommended oil to specified
level if necessary.
• Check ATV for oil leakage. Correct if necessary. 5-3, 8-10
Transmission • Check transmission case for leakage. 5-3, 8-14
Front brake • Check operation, and correct if necessary.
• Lubricate cable if necessary.
• Check lever free play, and adjust if necessary. 5-3, 8-21, 8-23
Rear brake • Check operation, and correct if necessary.
• Lubricate cable if necessary.
• Check lever free play, and adjust if necessary. 5-3, 8-21, 8-24

EBU38000FuelMake sure there is sufficient gasoline in the tank
before starting off. Refuel if necessary. (See page
4-9.)EBU19561Engine oilMake sure that the engine oil is at the specified
level. Add oil as necessary. (See page 8-10.)EBU38541TransmissionMake sure there is no oil leaking from the trans-
mission case.EBU19653Front and rear brakesBrake levers
Check for correct free play in the brake levers. If
the free play is incorrect, adjust it. (See pages
8-23 and 8-24.)
Check operation of the levers. They should
move smoothly and there should be a firm feel-
ing when the brake is applied. If not, have the
ATV checked by a Yamaha dealer. Brake operation
Test the brakes at slow speed after starting out to
make sure they are working properly. If the brakes
do not provide proper braking performance,
check the brake shoes for wear. (See page 8-21.)
EBU19762Throttle leverCheck the operation of the throttle lever. It must
open smoothly and spring back to the idle position
when released. Have a Yamaha dealer correct if
necessary.EBU19771Drive chainCheck the condition of the drive chain and check
the drive chain slack. Lubricate and adjust the
drive chain as necessary. (See page 8-25.)EBU19799TiresCheck tire pressure regularly to make sure it is at
the recommended specifications. Also check for
wear and damage.

EBU34472Transmission oilThe transmission case must be checked for oil
leakage before each ride. If any leakage is found,
have a Yamaha dealer check and repair the ATV.
In addition, the transmission oil must be changed
at the intervals specified in the periodic mainte-
nance and lubrication chart.
To change the transmission oil1. Place the ATV on a level surface.
2. Place an oil pan under the transmission case to collect the used oil.
3. Remove the transmission oil filler cap and its O-ring from the transmission case. 4. Remove the transmission oil drain bolt and its
gasket to drain the oil from the transmission
case.

85. Install the transmission oil drain bolt and its
new gasket, and then tighten the bolt to the
specified torque.
6. Refill with the specified amount of the recom- mended oil. NOTICE: Make sure that no
foreign material enters the transmission
case.
[ECB03380]
7. Check the oil filler cap O-ring for damage, and replace it if necessary.
8. Install and tighten the oil filler cap.
9. Check the transmission case for oil leakage. If oil is leaking, check for the cause.EBU34110Cleaning the air filter elementThe air filter element should be serviced at the in-
tervals specified in the periodic maintenance and
lubrication chart. Clean or, if necessary, replace
the air filter element more frequently if you are rid-
ing in unusually wet or dusty areas.TIPThere is a check hose at the bottom of the air filter
case. If dust or water collects in this hose, empty
the hose and clean the air filter element and air fil-
ter case.
