Front and rear brakes
Brake lever and brake pedal
8Check that there is no free play in the brake
lever. If there is free play, have a Yamaha
dealer inspect the brake system.
8Check for correct brake pedal height. (See
page 8-93.) If the pedal height is incorrect,
have a Yamaha dealer adjust it.
8Check the operation of the brake lever and
brake pedal. They should move smoothly and
there should be a firm feeling when the
brakes are applied. If not, have a Yamaha
dealer inspect the brake system.
Brake fluid level
Check the brake fluid level. Add fluid if neces-
sary. (See pages 8-85–8-89.)
Recommended brake fluid: DOT 4

Brake fluid leakage
Check to see if any brake fluid is leaking out of
the pipe joints or brake fluid reservoirs. Apply
the brakes firmly for one minute. If there is any
leakage, have a Yamaha dealer inspect the
brake system.
Brake operation
Test the brakes at slow speed after starting out
to make sure they are working properly. If the
brakes do not provide proper braking perfor-
mance, inspect the brake pads for wear. (See
page 8-81–8-83.)

NOTE:
8Recommended brake fluid: DOT 4
8Brake fluid replacement:
9When disassembling the master cylinder or caliper cylinder, replace the brake fluid. Normally
check the brake fluid level and add the fluid as required.
9On the inner parts of the master cylinder and caliper cylinder, replace the oil seals every two
years.
9Replace the brake hoses every four years, or if cracked or damaged.

Brake fluid level inspection
Insufficient brake fluid may let air enter the
brake system, possibly causing the brakes to
become ineffective.
Before riding, check that the brake fluid is above
the minimum level mark and replenish if neces-
sary. A low brake fluid level may indicate worn
brake pads and/or brake system leakage. If the
brake fluid level is low, be sure to check the
brake pads for wear and the brake system for
leakage.

NOTE:
8To access the rear brake fluid reservoir cap,
remove the seat (see page 4-27), remove the
rear brake fluid reservoir bracket bolt, and
then pull the rear brake fluid reservoir out to
the side as shown.
8When installing the rear brake fluid reservoir,
make sure the projection on the rear brake
fluid reservoir bracket is inserted into the hole
in the frame.
cC
Do not tilt the rear brake fluid reservoir
excessively when removing or installing the
rear brake fluid reservoir. Also do not twist
or pull the hose of the reservoir.

Observe these precautions:
8When checking the brake fluid level, make
sure the top of the brake fluid reservoir is
level.
8Use only the designated quality brake fluid,
otherwise, the rubber seals may deteriorate,
causing leakage and poor brake performance.
8Refill with the same type of brake fluid. Mixing
fluids may result in a harmful chemical reac-
tion and lead to poor brake performance.
8Be careful that water does not enter the brake
fluid reservoir when refilling. Water will signifi-
cantly lower the boiling point of the fluid and
may result in vapor lock.
8Brake fluid may deteriorate painted surfaces
or plastic parts. Always clean up spilled fluid
immediately.
8Have a Yamaha dealer check the cause if the
brake fluid level goes down.Recommended brake fluid: DOT 4

Brake fluid replacement
Complete fluid replacement should be done only
by trained Yamaha service personnel. Have a
Yamaha dealer replace the following compo-
nents during periodic maintenance or when they
are damaged or leaking.
8Replace the oil seals every two years.
8Replace the brake hoses every four years.
