Be Prepared
Drive Responsibly
If you think or feel the vehicle may tip or roll,
reduce your risk to injury: Pay Attention and Plan Ahead
Do not allow careless or reckless driving.
Do your part to prevent injuries: Require Proper Use of Your Vehicle
Rollovers have caused
severe injuries and death,
even on flat, open areas.
Stay completely inside the vehicle.
Passenger must be able to reach the handhold while
keeping feet flat on floor and sitting upright with
back against seat.
Driver must be able to comfortably reach all controls
while sitting upright with back against seat.
Wear an approved helmet, eye protection and protective gear.
Fasten seat belts.
Do not allow anyone to ride in the cargo bed.
Avoid side hilling (riding across slopes).
Plan for hills, rough terrain, ruts, and other changes
in traction and terrain. Avoid paved surfaces.
Avoid hard acceleration when turning, even from a stop.
Slow down before entering a turn.
Avoid abrupt maneuvers, sideways sliding, skidding,
or fishtailing, and never do donuts.
Avoid loss of control and rollovers: Do not put any part of your body outside of
the vehicle for any reason.
Keep a firm grip on the steering wheel
or handhold and brace yourself.
Do not exceed seating capacity: 1 passenger.
Do not allow operation on public roads
(unless designated for off-highway vehicle access)
â collisions with cars and trucks can occur.
Do not let people drive or ride
after using alcohol or drugs.

As the vehicleâs owner, you are responsible for the safe and proper operation of your Yamaha
YXZ1000R. While understanding all parts of this manual are important for vehicle ownership, be
sure to read this chapter an d the instructions in Chapter 7 before operating your Yamaha
YXZ1000R. Also use these two chapters and the labels on the vehicle to instruct new operators
and passengers. Do not allow anyone else to operate your vehicle or ride as a passenger if you
are unsure whether he or she is willing and able to follow these instructions.
Get to know your vehicle
This off-road vehicle will handle and maneuver differently from cars, ATVs, go-carts, golf-cars
and grounds-keeping vehicles. Follow these instructions to reduce your risk of an accident and

Before you operate your Yamaha YXZ1000R
ïŹ Prepare yourself and your passenger:
âą This vehicle is intended for use only by an op erator 16 or older with a valid motor vehicle li-
cense. Check country laws fo r minimum age requirements.
âą This vehicle is designed to carry the driver and one passenger. Never carry passengers in the cargo bed.
âą Both driver and passenger shou ld wear seat belts properly.
âą Both driver and passenger must be able to put both feet flat on the floorboard while seated
upright with their backs against the backrests. Passenger must be able to reach and hold
the passenger handhold in front of them.
âą Both driver and passenger should wear an appr oved motorcycle helmet that fits properly.
Both driver and passenger should also wear eye protection (goggles or a face shield), gloves,
over-the-ankle boots, long-sleeved shirt or jacket, and long pants.

âą Do not drive or ride as passenger after using drugs or alcohol.
Prepare your vehicle
Perform the pre-operation checks each time you use the vehicle to make sure it is in safe oper-
ating condition. Failure to inspect or maintain th e vehicle properly increases the possibility of an
accident or equipment damage. See page 5-1 for a list of pre-operation checks.
Prepare your load
Carrying heavy or over-sized loads can affect hand ling, stability, and cause the risk of overturns
or other accidents.
ïŹ Read âLoadingâ on page 6-9 before loading the cargo bed.
ïŹ Do not overload the vehicle or cargo bed.
ïŹ Refer to the labels on the vehicle for specific loading limits and recommended tire air pressure.
ïŹ Keep heavier objects and the load in general cent ered side to side, and as low and as far for-
ward in the cargo bed as possible.
ïŹ Secure cargo so that it will not shift â a loose load could change handling unexpectedly or be
thrown forward and strike occupants.
ïŹ This vehicle is not designed to tow or pull objects. Towing a trailer or pulling another vehicle or
other object will affect handling, stability, an d increase the risk of overturns and accidents.
Towing or pulling can also cause frame and vehicle damage.
