below 0 °C (32 °F), “LO” will be displayed.
When the coolant temperature is between
122 °C (252 °F) and 128 °C (263 °F), the cool-
ant temperature display will flash. In this case,
stop the vehicle in a safe place and let it idle
for 10 minutes. If the message “HI” flashes,
stop the engine and let it cool. (See page
8-67.)TIPThe coolant temperature display can be set
to “°C” or “°F”. To switch the temperature
units, turn the key to “ ” (off), then hold
the “RESET” button pushed and turn the
key to “ ” (on).
The coolant temperature varies with chang-
es in the weather and engine load.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge indicates the amount of fuel in
the fuel tank. The display segments of the fuel
gauge disappear from “F” (full) towards “E”
(empty) as the fuel level decreases. When the
last segment on the left disappears and the
fuel level warning indicator flashes, refuel as
soon as possible.1. Fuel level warning indicator

NOTICEECB03020Do not use oils with a diesel specifica-
tion of “CD” or oils of a higher quality
than specified. In addition, do not use
oils labeled “ENE RGY CONSERVING II”
or higher.
Make sure that no foreign material en-
ters the oil tank. EBU35322TransmissionMake sure there is no oil leaking from the
transmission case.EBU31760CoolantCheck the coolant level in the coolant reser-
voir when the engine is cold (the coolant level
will vary with engine temperature). The coolant level is satisfactory if it is be-
tween the minimum and maximum level
marks on the coolant reservoir. If the coolant
level is at or below the minimum level mark,
add additional coolant to bring the level up to
maximum level mark. If coolant is not avail-
able, add distilled water. Change the coolant
every two years. (See page 8-33.)
NOTICEECB02120Hard water or salt water is harmful to the
engine. You may use soft water if you can-
not get distilled water. EBU36020Final gearMake sure there is no oil leaking from the final
gear case.
Recommended engine oil type and quantity:
See page 10-1.
Coolant reservoir capacity (up to the maxi-
mum level mark):0.31 L (0.33 US qt, 0.28 Imp.qt)

4. Install the differential gear oil drain boltand its new gasket, and then tighten the
bolt to the specified torque.
5. Refill the differential gear case with the recommended oil. NOTICE: Be sure no
foreign material enters the differential
gear case.
[ECB00412]
TIP GL-4 is a quality and additive rating; GL-5
rated hypoid gear oils may also be used.
If desired, an SAE 80W-90 hypoid gear oil
may be used instead.
6. Check the oil filler bolt gasket for dam-
age, and replace it if necessary.
7. Install the differential gear oil filler bolt and its gasket, and then tighten the bolt
to the specified torque.
8. Check for oil leakage. If oil leakage is found, check for the cause.EBU35110CoolantCheck the coolant level prior to each time you
operate the vehicle, and have a Yamaha deal-
er change the coolant every two years.
Checking the coolant level
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Remove the hood. (See page 8-10.)
Tightening torque: Differential gear oil drain bolt:9.8 N·m (0.98 kgf·m, 7.1 lb·ft)
Recommended oil: SAE 80 API GL-4 Hypoid gear oil
Oil quantity: 0.18 L (0.19 US qt, 0.16 Imp.qt)
Tightening torque: Differential gear oil filler bolt:23 N·m (2.3 kgf·m, 17 lb·ft)

3. Check the coolant level when the engineis cold (the coolant level will vary with en-
gine temperature).TIPThe coolant level in the coolant reservoir
should be between the minimum and maxi-
mum level marks. 4. If the coolant level is at or below the mini-
mum level mark, remove the coolant res-
ervoir cap and add coolant to the maximum level mark.
NOTICE: If cool-
ant is not available, use distilled water
or soft tap water instead. Do not use
hard water or salt water since they are
harmful to the engine. If water has
been used instead of coolant, replace
it with coolant as soon as possible,
otherwise the cooling system will not
be protected against frost and corro-
sion. If water has been added to the
coolant, have a Yamaha dealer check
the antifreeze content of the coolant
as soon as possible, otherwise the ef-
fectiveness of the coolant will be re-
duced.

Engine overheating
Wait for the engine to cool before removing the radiator cap. WARNING! If the engine is not
cool when removing the radiator cap, hot fluid and steam could blow out under pressure
and burn you.
[EWB03460]
Place a thick rag over the cap and remove the cap slowly to allow any re-
maining pressure to escape.
TIPIf it is difficult to get the recommended coolant, tap water can be used temporarily, provided that
it is changed to the recommended coolant as soon as possible. Wait until the
engine has cooled.
Check the coolant level in the
coolant reservoir and/or radiator.
Level is OK.Level is low, check the
cooling system for leakage.
No
leakage.Leakage.
Ask a Yamaha dealer to inspect
and repair the cooling system.Add coolant. (See TIP.)
Restart the engine. If the engine overheats again, ask a
Yamaha dealer to inspect and/or repair the cooling system.
