ADJIDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT/
VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT
1. Start the engine and thoroughly warm it
up.
2. Adjust:
lIdle speed
VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
NOTE:
lThe valve clearance should be adjusted
when the engine is cool to the touch.
lThe piston must be at Top Dead Center
(T.D.C.) on compression stroke to check or
adjust the valve clearance.
1. Remove:
lSeat
lSide covers
lAir scoops
lFuel tank
Refer to “SEAT, FUEL TANK AND SIDE
COVERS” section in the CHAPTER 4.
2. Drain:
lCoolant
Refer to “COOLANT REPLACEMENT”
section.
3. Remove:
lRADIATOR
Refer to “RADIATOR” section in the
CHAPTER 4.
lEngine stay (upper)
lCylinder head breather hose
lCylinder head cover
lSpark plug cap
Refer to “CYLINDER HEAD COVER”
section in the CHAPTER 4. Adjustment steps:
lAdjust the pilot screw.
Refer to “PILOT SCREW ADJUSTMENT”
section.
lTurn the throttle stop screw 1 until the
engine runs at the lowest possible speed.
To increase idle speed ®
Turn the throttle stop screw 1 in a.
To decrease idle speed ®
Turn the throttle stop screw 1 out b.
Engine idling speed:
1,700 ~ 1,900 r/min

STEERING HEAD INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT
lTighten the ring nut 3 using ring nut
wrench 4.
Ring nut wrench:
YM-33975/90890-01403
T R..
Ring nut (initial tightening):
38 Nm (3.8 m • kg, 27 ft • lb)
lLoosen the ring nut one turn.
lRetighten the ring nut using the ring nut
wrench.
T R..
Ring nut (final tightening):
7 Nm (0.7 m • kg, 5.1 ft • lb)
lCheck the steering shaft by turning it lock
to lock. If there is any binding, remove the
steering shaft assembly and inspect the
steering bearings.
lInstall the handle crown 5, steering shaft
nut 6, handlebar 7, handlebar holder 8
and number plate 9.

Steering shaft nut:
145 Nm (14.5 m • kg, 105 ft • lb)
Handlebar upper holder:
23 Nm (2.3 m • kg, 17 ft • lb)
Pinch bolt (handle crown):
23 Nm (2.3 m • kg, 17 ft • lb)
NOTE:
Set the torque wrench to the ring nut
wrench so that they form a right angle.
WARNING
Avoid over-tightening.
NOTE:
lThe upper handlebar holder should be
installed with the punched mark a for-
ward.
lInsert the end of fuel breather hose 0 into
the hole of the number plate.
CAUTION:
First tighten the bolts on the front side of
the handlebar holder, and then tighten
the bolts on the rear side.

ing the side cover. If you remove the right
side cover with force without removing the
seat, the panel (on the inside) may contact

Do not loosen the screws {TPS (throttle
position sensor)} 1 except when changing
the TPS (throttle position sensor) due to
failure because it will cause a drop in
engine performance.

NOTE:
To optimize the fuel flow at a small throttle
opening, each machine’s pilot screw has been
individually set at the factory. Before removing
the pilot screw, turn it in fully and count the
number of turns. Record this number as the
factory-set number of turns out.

lUse a petroleum based solvent for cleaning.
Blow out all passages and jets with com-
pressed air.
