MAP-CONTROLLED CDI UNIT
MAP-CONTROLLED CDI UNIT
A map-controlled, CDI ignition system is used in the YZ450F.
The microcomputer in the CDI unit detects the engine speed and throttle position, thus determining
the optimum ignition timing through the entire operating range. In this way, quick throttle response
can be achieved according to various riding conditions.

Function of Component
Component Function
TPS
(throttle position sensor)Detects throttle valve opening and inputs it into the computer in the
CDI unit as a throttle opening signal.
Pickup coil Detects signal rotor revolutions and inputs them into the computer in
the CDI unit as engine revolution signals.
CDI unit The signals of the TPS and pickup coil sensor are analyzed by the
computer in the CDI unit, which then adjusts ignition timing for the
operation requirements.

Principal of 3-Dimensional Control
Conventionally, ignition timing was controlled only
by engine revolutions (2-dimensional control).
However, ignition timing needs advancement also
by engine load. Thus, accurate ignition timing can
be determined by adding throttle opening to deter-
mine ignition timing (3-dimensional control).

Use the following steps for checking the possibility of the malfunctioning engine being attributable to
ignition system failure and for checking the spark plug which will not spark.
*marked: Only when the ignition checker is used.
NOTE:
•Remove the following parts before inspection.
1) Seat
2) Fuel tank
•Use the following special tools in this inspection.

Suivre la procédure ci-dessous pour déterminer si le mauvais fonctionnement du moteur est dû à une panne
dans le circuit d’allumage et pour vérifier une bougie qui ne produit pas d’étincelle.
* Seulement quant le contrôleur d’allumage est utilisé.
N.B.:
Déposer les pièces suivantes avant le contrôle.

Folgende Prüfschritte dienen zur Diagnose von zündungsbedingten Motorstörungen und von Zünd-
kerzenausfall.
* Nur mit dem Zündungstester kontrollieren.
HINWEIS:
Vor der Kontrolle folgende Bauteile demontieren.
1) Sitzbank
2) Kraftstofftank
Folgendes Spezialwerkzeug für die Kontrolle verwenden.

SPARK GAP TEST
1. Disconnect the ignition coil from spark
plug.
2. Remove the ignition coil cap.
3. Connect the dynamic spark tester 1 (igni-
tion checker 2) as shown.
•Ignition coil 3

4. Kick the kick starter.
5. Check the ignition spark gap.
6. Start engine, and increase spark gap until
misfire occurs. (for USA and CDN only)
Minimum spark gap:
6.0 mm (0.24 in)

COUPLERS, LEADS AND IGNITION COIL
CONNECTION INSPECTION
1. Check:
•Couplers and leads connection
Rust/dust/looseness/short-circuit →
Repair or replace.
•Ignition coil and spark plug as they are fit-
ted
Push in the ignition coil until it closely
contacts the spark plug hole in the cylin-
der head cover.

1. Das Zündkabel von der Zündkerze abziehen.
2. Den Stecker von der Zündspule abziehen.
3. Den Zündfunkenstrecken-Tester 1 (Zün-
dungstester 2), wie in der Abbildung
gezeigt, anschließen.

4. Den Kickstarterhebel durchtreten.
5. Die Zündfunkenstrecke kontrollieren.
6. Den Motor starten und dann die Zündfun-
kenstrecke vergrößern, bis es zu Fehlzün-

Min. Zündfunkenstrecke:
6,0 mm (0,24 in)
STECKVERBINDER-, KABEL- UND
ZÜNDSPULENANSCHLÜSSE
KONTROLLIEREN
1. Kontrollieren:
Steckverbinder- und Kabelanschlüsse
Rostig/staubig/locker/kurzgeschlossen →
Instand setzen, ggf. erneuern.
Sitz der Zündspule und Zündkerze
Die Zündspule eindrücken, bis sie die
Zündkerzenbohrung im Zylinderkopfdek-
kel berührt.
MOTORSTOPPSCHALTER “ENGINE STOP”
KONTROLLIEREN
1. Kontrollieren:
Durchgang des Motorstoppschalters
“ENGINE STOP”
Kein Durchgang, wenn gedrückt. → Erneuern.
Durchgang, wenn freigegeben → Erneuern. Messkabel (+) → Schwarz/Weiß 1

2. Déposer le capuchon de la bobine d’allumage.
3. Connecter le testeur dynamique d’étincelle 1
(contrôleur d’allumage 2) comme indiqué.

CONTROLE DES CONNEXIONS DES
FICHES RAPIDES, DES FILS ET DE LA

1. Vérifier:
Connexion des fiches rapides et des fils
Rouille/poussière/jeu/court-circuit → Répa-
rer ou remplacer.
Bobine d’allumage et bougie en place
Appuyer sur la bobine d’allumage jusqu’à ce
qu’elle soit en contact étroit avec le trou de
bougie du couvre-culasse.
CONTROLE DU BOUTON “ENGINE STOP”
1. Contrôler:
Continuité du bouton “ENGINE STOP”
Pas de continuité lorsque enfoncé → Remplacer.
Continuité lorsque relâché → Remplacer. Fil (+) du multimètre →
fil noir/blanc 1
