NOTE: Befor e removin g th e steerin g gearbox , mak e
sur e th e fron t wheel s ar e straigh t ahead .
1 . Remov e th e steerin g join t cover .
CLIP CLAM P
2. Remov e th e steerin g join t bolts , an d disconnec t th e
steerin g join t b y movin g th e join t towar d th e
column .
3. Loc k th e steerin g shaf t wit h ignitio n ke y t o kee p
th e steerin g shaf t position .
4 . Rais e th e ca r an d plac e safet y stand s i n th e prope r
location s (se e sectio n 1 ).
5 . Remov e th e fron t wheels . 6
. Remov e th e cotte r pi n fro m th e caste l nu t an d
remov e th e nut .
7. Instal l th e 1 0 m m he x nu t o n th e bal l joint . B e sur e
that th e 1 0 m m he x nu t i s flus h wit h th e bal l join t
pin end , o r th e threade d sectio n o f th e bal l join t pi n
migh t b e damage d b y th e bal l join t remover .
NOTE: Remov e th e bal l join t usin g th e Bal l Join t
Remover , 2 8 m m ( 07MAC-SL00200 ). Refe r t o
pag e 18-2 1 fo r ho w to us e th e bal l join t remover .
8 . Separat e th e tie-ro d bal l join t an d knuckl e usin g th e
specia l tool .
CAUTION : Avoi d damagin g th e bal l join t boot .
NOTE : I f necessary , appl y penetratin g typ e lubrican t
t o loose n th e bal l joint .

4 . Connec t th e shor t connecto r t o th e airba g 3 P con -
nector .
5. Remov e th e Tor x bolt s usin g a Tor x T3 0 bit , the n
remov e th e driver' s airba g assembly .

2 . Remov e th e driver' s airba g assembl y an d steerin g
whee l fro m th e colum n (se e pag e 17-43 ).
3 . Remov e th e dashboar d lowe r panel , dashboar d
lowe r pad , an d dashboar d brace . 6
. Remov e th e colum n covers .
NOTE : B e carefu l no t t o damag e th e colum n covers .
7 . Disconnec t th e TC S senso r connector .

. Disconnec t th e connecto r betwee n th e cabl e ree l
an d th e SR S mai n harness , the n remov e th e con -
necto r holder .

Replacement

1. Remove the spare tire and the spare tire holder.

2. Disconnect both the negative cable and positive cable from the battery.

3. Remove the battery holder, then take out the battery.

Removal :
1. Disconnec t bot h th e negativ e cabl e an d positiv e
cabl e fro m th e battery .
2 . Carefull y remov e th e sid e sil l pa d (pul l i t up , rea r
en d first) .
3 . Remov e th e fus e bo x door .

trim .
5. Remov e th e under-das h fus e bo x mountin g bolts . 6

locked . T o remov e it , firs t lif t th e connecto r lid ,
the n pres s th e connecto r ta b dow n an d pul l th e
connecto r out .

Sensor Inspection

CAUTION: Take extra care when painting or doing

body work on any part of the dashboard lower panel.

Avoid direct exposure of the sensors or wiring to heat

guns, welding, or spraying equipment.

• Disconnect both the negative and positive battery

cables.

• Install the short connectors before working around

the dashboard lower panel or the SRS sensors.

• After any degree of frontal body damage, inspect

both dash sensors. Replace a sensor if it is dented,

cracked, or deformed.

• Be sure the sensors are installed securely.

Wiring Precautions

Never attempt to modify, splice or repair SRS wiring.

NOTE: SRS wiring can be identified by special

yellow outer protective covering.

• Be sure to install the harness wires so that they are

not pinched or interfering with other car parts.

• Make sure all SRS ground locations are clean and

grounds are securely fastened for optimum metal-

to-metal contact. Poor grounding can cause inter-

mittent problems that are difficult to diagnose.
