Warning stage
If you activate the turn s ignal, side assist warns
yo u about vehicles that are detected and classi­
fied as crit ica l. T he d isp lay in the respective mir­
ror blinks bright ly. If this happens, check traffic
by glancing in the rearview mirror and over your

@ Vehicles that are approaching
In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itical for a lane change even if it is still some·
what far away . The faster a veh icle approaches,
the sooner the display in the exterior mirror wi ll
turn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling with you are indicated in the
exterior mirror if they are classified as critical for
a lane change. All vehicles detected by side assist

are indicated by the time they enter your "blind
spot", at the latest .
© Vehicles left behind
If you slow ly pass a vehicle that side assist has
de tected (the diffe rence in speed between the
vehicle and your vehicle is less than 9 mph or 15
km/h), the display in the exterior mirror turns on
as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
The display will not turn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle that side ass ist has detected (the differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and your vehi­
cle is greater than 9 mph or 15 km/h).
Functional limitations
The radar sensors are designed to detect the lef t
and right adjacent lanes when the road lanes are
the normal width . In some situations, the display
in the exterior mirror may turn on even though
there is no vehicle located in the area that is criti·
cal for a lane c hange. For example:
- If the lanes are narrow or if your are driving on
the edge of your lane . If this is the case, the
system may have detected the vehicle in anoth·
er lane that is
not adjacent to your current lane.
- If you are driving through a curve . Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over
from the ad jacent lane.
- If side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or disp laced guard rai ls).
- In poor weather conditions. The side assist
functions are limited.
Do not cover the radar sensors <=?

stickers, deposits, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, since this wi ll impair the function . For in·
formation on cleaning, refer to<=?

-Always pay attention to traffic and to the
area around your vehicle. Side assist cannot
replace a d river's attention. The driver alone
is always respo nsible for lane changes a nd
similar driving maneuvers .
- In some situations, the system may not
function or its function may be limited. For
example:

- In poor weather conditions such as heavy

in the adjacent lane may not be detected
because they are outside of the sensor range.
- Audi side assist cannot detect all vehicles
under all conditions, which can increase the
risk of accidents.
- Please note that side assist only displays ap­
proaching vehicles or vehicles in your blind
spot if your vehicle is traveling at least
19 mph (30 km/h).
- In certa in situations, the system may not
work or its function may be limited. For ex­
amp le:
- The display may not turn on at the right
time if vehicles are approaching or passing
very quickly.
- In poor weather conditions, such as heavy rain, snow or fog.
- In very wide lanes, in tight curves or when
there are slopes in the roadway, vehicles
in the neighboring lanes may not be de­
tected because they are outside of the
sensor range.

The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
underbody. This can affect the system. Have
an authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Serv ice Facility check their function .

-If the window glass in the driver's door or
front passenger's door has been t inted, the
display in the exterior mirror may be misin­
terpreted.

Adjusting the display brightness

The display brightness can be adjusted in the

The display br ightness adjusts automatically to
the brightness of the surroundings, both in the
information and in the warning stage. In very
dark or very bright surround ings, the d isp lay is
al ready set to the minimum o r max imum level by
the automatic adjustment. In such cases, you may not ice no change when adjust ing the bright ­
ness, or the change may only be noticeable once
the surroundings change.
Adjus t the br igh tness to a leve l where the display
in the information stage will not disrupt your
view forward . If you change the brightness, the
display in the exterior mirror will briefly show the
brightness level in the information stage . The
brightness of the warning stage is linked to the
brightness in the information stage and is adjust­
ed along with the information stage adjustment .

Audi drive select (drive settings)
Introduction
Applies to vehicles: with Audi drive select
Audi drive select makes it possible to experience
different types of vehicle settings in one vehicle .
The driver can select from three
C omfort , Auto
and Dynamic modes using the r.1:a button in the
center console or the MMI to switch between a
sporty and a comfortable dr iving mode, for ex­
ample . In the
In div idual * mode, the vehicle set ­
tings can be adjusted to your personal preferen­
ces. This makes it possible to combine settings
such as a sporty eng ine set ting with smooth
s teer ing .
A WARNING
Using Audi drive select incorrectly can lead to
collisions, othe r accidents and serious inju­
ries .

The vehicle setup in each mode depends on the
vehicle's features. However, the eng ine and
steering are a lways affected.
Engine and automatic tr ansmiss ion
Depend ing on the mode, the engine and auto­
matic transmission* respond more qu ickly or in a
more ba lanced manner to acce lerato r pedal
movements.
Adaptive damper s (Audi magnetic ride )*
The adaptive dampers use sensors to record in­
formation regarding steering movements, brak­
i ng and acce le ration operations by the dr iver,
r oad su rface, driving speed, and load. W it h Aud i
drive select you can adjust the adaptive dampers
spo rty (dynamic), comfortable (comfort) or ba l­
anced (auto).
Steering
The steering adapts in terms of steering ass is­
tance. There are d ifferent modes
c;;:> page 149.
Ind irect steering that moves easi ly as in comfort
mode is especia lly suited to long drives on a high ­
way. The dynamic mode provides sporty, direct
steering .
For vehicles with progress ive steering* the steer­
ing performance is more agi le .
Corn ering light *
The cornering light adjusts when driv ing on
cu rves at speeds between 6 mph (10 km/h) and
68 mp h (110 km/h). The pivoting act ion and the
li gh ting are also adapted to the mode.
Adaptive cruise control*
The behavio r whe n accelerating can be adjusted
from comfortable to sporty, depending on the
Audi drive select mode. Adaptive cr uise control
also responds to the dr iving beh avior of the vehi­
cle ahead in a more conservative or sporty man-
ner .

Depending on your vehicle's equipment, various
parking aids will help you when parking and ma­
neuvering.
The
rear parking system is an audible parking aid
that warns you of obstacles
behind the vehicle

The parking system plus assists you when park ­
ing by audibly and visually indicating objects de­
tected
in front of and behind the vehicle

The rearview camera shows the area behind the
vehicle in the MMI display . This display assists
you when you are cross or parallel parking. The
parking system plus functions are also available
¢ page 153.
A WARNING ,--
- Always look for traffic and check the area
around your vehicle by looking at it directly
as well. The parking system cannot replace
the driver's attention. The driver is always
responsible when entering or leaving a park­
ing space and during similar maneuvers.
- Please note that some surfaces, such as
clothing, are not detected by the system .
- Sensors and cameras have blind spots in
which people and objects cannot be detect­
ed . Be especially cautious of small children
and animals .
- Always pay attention to the area around the
vehicle -using the rearview mirror, too .
- The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the radiator grille, bumper,
wheel housing and the underbody . The park ­
ing system may become impaired as a re­
sult. Have an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility check their
function.
- Make sure the sensors are not obstructed by
stickers, deposits or other materials. If they
are the sensor function could be impaired .

-Some objects are not detected or displayed
by the system under certain circumstances:
- Objects such as barrier chains, trailer draw
bars, vertical poles or fences
- Objects above the sensors such as wall ex­
tensions
- Objects with specific surfaces or struc­
tures such as chain link fences or powder
snow
- If you continue driving closer to a low-lying
object, it may disappear from the sensor
range . Note that you will no longer be
warned about this obstacle.
- The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the radiator grille, bumper,
wheel housing and the underbody . The
parking system may become impaired as a

authorized Audi Service Facility check their

- The system may provide a warning even
though there are no obstacles in the cover­
age area in some situations, such as:
- certain road surfaces or for long grass .
- external ultrasonic sources e.g. from
cleaning vehicles.
- heavy rain, snow, or thick vehicle exhaust .
- We recommend that you practice parking in
a traffic-free location or parking lot to be­
come familiar with the system. When doing
this, there should be good light and weath­
er conditions .
- You can change the volume and pitch of the

-What appears in the MMI display is some­
what time-delayed.
- The sensors must be kept clean and free of
snow and ice for the park assist to operate .

There is a sensor in the rear bumper cover . If
these detect an obstacle, audible signals warn
you .

Intelligent Technology
- The braking ability of your vehicle is limited
to the traction of the wheels. In this way, it
is not different from a two whee l dr ive vehi­
cle . Do not be tempted to accelerate to a
high speed when the road is slippe ry th is in­
c reases the risk of an acc ident .
- Note that on wet streets, the front wheels can "hyd roplane" if d riving at s peeds that
are too hig h. Unlike front whee l drive
vehicles , the eng ine does no t rev highe r su d­
denly when the vehicle begins hyd ro planing.
For this reason, pay attention to the road
co ndit ions regar dless of your speed.
Energy management
The starting ability is optimized
The energy management system manages the
electrical energy distribution and optimizes the
availability of electrical energy for starting the
engine .
When a ve hicle w ith a conventional energy sys­
tem is not driven for a long time, the battery is
d rained by equ ipment (for example the immobi l­
i z e r) . In certain circumsta nces, there could may
not be eno ugh en ergy to start the engine.
Your ve hicle is equipped with a n intellige nt ener­
gy management system for d istr ibut ing electric i­
ty . This s ignifica ntly imp roves the starting ability
and increas es the battery life.
The energy management system Is made up of
battery diagnosis , idling current management
and dynamic energy management .
Battery diagnosis
The battery diagnosis determines the battery
charge level. The sensors dete rm ine the battery
voltage, the battery cur rent, and t he battery
temperature . The c urrent charge level and the
pe rformance of the bat tery are dete rm ined based
on this.
Idling current management
The idling current management decreases the
energy used w hile parked . With the eng ine
sw itched off, i t manages the energy dist ribution

to the different e lectr ica l components. Date from
batte ry diagnosis is taken into account for this.
De pend ing o n the bat tery charge leve l, elect ric al
equipmen t is switched o ff one item a fter the o th­
er, to prevent the bat tery from drai ning and to
retain the start ing ability .
Dynamic energy management
While driv ing , dynam ic energy manageme nt dis ­
tribu tes the ap propr iate amo unt of energy to t he
electr ical eq uipment. It contro ls the battery
charge level so that more energy is no t used then
i s being generated in order to maintain an opti­
mal batte ry charge level.

- Ener gy management cannot overcome the
laws of p hysics . Note that the charge leve l
and length of the battery life are limited.
- When the sta rting ability is en dangered, the

What you should know
Maintaining the s tarting ability is the highest
priority.
A lo t of st ress is placed on the b attery when dr iv­
i ng sho rt d istances, in t raff ic, and a t cold times
of the year . A lot of energy is used but litt le is
generated. It is also critical whe n the engine is
not running but e lectr ica l equipment is sw itched
on. In th is case, energy is used but none is gener­
ated.
In sit uat ions like th is, ene rgy management w ill
active ly regulated the distrib ution of energy.
Long periods without use
I f you do no t drive yo ur vehicle fo r sever al days o r
weeks, e le ctrica l equ ipment is g radua lly sca le d
back or switched off. This reduces energy use and
ensures th e vehicle will be ab le to start a fter long
per iods of time . Some conven ience f unctions
such as opening w ith the remote control key may
not be available . These convenience functions
will be ava ilable again o nce you swi tch the ig ni-
tion on and sta rt the eng ine. .,..

Pyrotechnic saf ety belt pret ensioner s
The safety belts are equipped with safety belt
p re tensioners . The system is activated by sensors
in front, side and rear -end collisions of great se­
verity and in a rollover. This tightens the belt and
takes up belt slack
q & in Service and disposal of
safety belt pretensioner on page 183.
Taking up
the slack helps to reduce forward occupant
movement dur ing a coll is ion.
A WARNING
- It is possible for the pretensione rs to deploy
incorrectly.
- The pyrotechnic system can only prov ide
protection for one coll ision. If the pyrotech­
nic pretensione rs deploy, the pretens ion ing
system mus t be replaced.
The pyrotechnic safety belt pretens ioners can
only deploy once.
- The safety belt pretensioners do not dep loy
i n minor frontal, side and rea r-end colli­
s io ns.
- A fine d ust is released when the pyrotechnic
safety be lt pretens ioners deploy. This is nor­
mal and is not caused by a fire in the vehi­
cle.
- The re levant safety req uirements must be
obse rved w hen the ve hicle or components
of the system are sc rapped. A qualified
dealersh ip is familiar w ith these regu lations
and will be p leased to pass on the informa­
tion to you.
- Be sure to observe all safety, environmental and other regulations if the vehicle or indi­
vidual parts of the system, particularly the
safety be lt or airbag, are to be disposed. We
recommend you have your author ized Audi
dealer perform this serv ice for you.
Service and disposal of safety belt preten­
sioner
The safe ty belt pretens ione rs are pa rts of the
safety be lts on yo ur Audi. Installing, removing,
servicing or repairing of belt pretensioners can
S afet y be lts
damage the safety belt system and prevent it
from working correctly in a col lision .
T he re are some important things you have to
k now to make s ure tha t the effectiveness of the
system will not be impaired and that d iscarded
components do not cause injury or pollute the
environment.
A WARNING
-
Imp roper care, servicing and repair proce­
dures can increase the risk of personal in jury
and death by preventing a safety belt preten­
sioner from activating when needed or act i­
vating it unexpectedly:
- The belt pretensioner system can be activat­ ed only once. If belt pretens ioners have
been activated, the system must be re­
p la ced.
- Never repair, adjust, or change any parts of
the safety belt sys tem.
- Safety belt systems including safety belt
p retensioners cannot be repai red. Spec ial
p ro cedures are required fo r removal, instal­
lation and di$pO$al of thi$ $y$tem.
- For any wo rk on the safety belt system, we
s trong ly recommen d that you see yo ur au­
thor ized A udi dealer or qualified techn ician
who has an Audi approved repair man ual,
tra ining and special equipment necessa ry.
@ For the sake of the environment
U nd eployed a irbag modules and p retension­
ers might be classif ied as Pe rc hlo ra te Ma teri­
a l - special handling may apply, see
www.dtsc.ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlo­ r ate. When the vehicle or parts of the re­
straint system including airbag modu les safe­
ty belts with pretensioners are scrapped, all
applicable laws and regu lations must be ob­
se rved. Your authorized Audi dealer is familiar
with these requirements and we recommend
that you have your dealer perform this service
fo r yo u.

A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing child seat instal­
led on the front passenger seat will be seri­
ously injured and can be killed if the front air­
bag inflates - even with an Advanced Airbag
System.
-Although the Advanced Airbag System in
your vehicle is designed to turn off the front
airbag when a rearward-facing child re­
straint has been installed on the front pas­
senger seat, nobody can absolutely guaran­
tee that deployment is impossible in all con­ ceivable situations that may happen during
the useful life of your vehicle.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child seat or
infant carrier with great force and will
smash the child seat and child against the backrest, center armrest, door, or roof.
-Always install rearward-facing child re­ straints on the rear seat.
- If you must install a rearward facing child
seat on the front passenger seat because of
exceptional circumstances and the
PASSEN­
GER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on
and stay on, immediately install the rear­
facing child seat in a rear seating position and have the airbag system inspected by
your Audi dealer.
A WARNING
If, in exceptional circumstances, you must in­
stall a forward-facing child restraint on the
front passenger's seat:
- Always make sure the forward-facing seat
has been designed and certified by its man­
ufacturer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and side airbag.
- Never put the forward-facing child restraint
up against or very near the instrument pan­
el.
- Always move the passenger seat into its
rearmost position in the seat's fore and aft
adjustment range, as far away from the air­
bag as possible, before installing the for­
ward-facing child restraint. The backrest must be adjusted to an upright position.
Airbag system
-Always make sure that there is nothing on
the front passenger seat that will cause the
capacitive passenger detection system in
the seat to signal to the Airbag System that
the seat is occupied by a person when it is
not, or to signal that it is occupied by some­
one who is heavier than the person actually
sitting on the seat. The presence of addi­
tional objects could cause the passenger
front airbag to be turned on when it should
be off, or could cause the airbag to work in a
way that is different from the way it would have worked without the object on the seat.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF light comes on and stays on all the time
whenever the ignition is switched on.
Advanced Airbag System components
The front passenger seat in your vehicle has a lot
of very important parts of the Advanced Airbag
System in it . These parts include the capacitive
passenger detection system, wiring, brackets,
and more. The control unit monitors the system
on the front passenger seat when the ignition is
switched on and turns the airbag indicator light
on when a malfunction in the one of the system
components is detected
¢ page 196. Because
the front passenger seat contains important
parts of the Advanced Airbag System, you must
take care to prevent it from being damaged.
Damage to the seat may prevent the Advanced
Airbag System for the front passenger seat from
doing its job in a crash.
The front Advanced Airbag System consists
of the following:
-Crash sensors in the front of the vehicle that
measure vehicle acceleration/deceleration to
provide information to the Advanced Airbag
System about the severity of the crash.
- An electronic control unit, with integrated
crash sensors for front and side impacts. The
control unit "decides" whether to fire the front
airbags based on the information received from
the crash sensors. The control unit also "de­
cides" whether the safety belt pretensioners
should be activated.
