Clear vision Heated mi rrors
- Rotate the knob to position @ .
Depend ing on the outs ide temperature, the mirror surfaces are
heated until the igni tion is sw itched off -even if the knob is no longe r
in posit io n @ .
You are we ll-advised to fold the o utside mirrors in when maneuvering
in tight spaces or when leaving the ca r pa rked close to other vehicles .
Memory for exterior mirrors*
On vehicles with memo ry fo r the d rive r's seat, the current sett ing for
the exter ior mirrors is automatically stored a long w it h the seat posi ­
tion=>
page 80 .
Tilt function for the passenger's mirror* (only with
memory for exterior mirrors)
W hen the reverse gear is engaged, the mir ror surface tilts downward
sl ightly if the setti ng is for the passenger 's mirror (knob in pos ition
® => page 73, fig. 79) . T h is allows you to see the curb during paralle l
par king.
The mirror returns to its init ial position as soon as reverse gear is
disengaged and ve hicl e speed is a bove about 9 mph (15 km/h). The
m irror also returns to its in itia l pos ition if the switch is moved to the
dr iver's ou tside mir ror © or the igni tion is sw itched off .
If the posi tion of t he mir ro r surface is changed on a ti lted mi rror, this
new position will be automat ically assigned to the remote key when
t he vehicle is ta ken ou t of reverse gear.
0 Note
Curved mirr or s urfa ces (c onvex o r sp her ica l*) increase your fie ld of
view. Remember that vehicles or other objects will appear smaller
a nd f arth er aw ay than when see n in a fla t m irror. If you use this
m irror to est imate d istances of following vehicles when changing
lanes, you co uld es timate incorre ct ly and ca u se an acciden t.
W Tips
If t here should be a ma lfunction in the elect rical system, you can still
adjust the outside mir rors by pressing the edge of the mirror .•

Automatic dimming for the outside
mirrors
The o utside mirrors dim at the same time as the ins ide mirror . When
the ignition is switched on, t he mi rrors a utomatically dim depend ing
on the a mount of light str ik ing t he m irrors (such as head lights
shining into the vehicle from the rear).
W hen the in ter io r li gh ting is switched on and whe n reverse gear is
engaged, the m irrors are switched back to their original brightness
(no t dimmed) .
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage. Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes , and resp ira­
tory sy stem.
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people with
asthma o r other respiratory conditions . Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or, if that is not po ssible, open window s and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water fo r at least 15 minutes; medical
attention i s recommended.
• If elect rolyte contacts skin , flush affected area with clean
water for at lea st 15 minutes and then wash affected area with
soap and water; medical attention is recommended. Thoroughly
wash affected clothing and shoe s before r eu se. .,

• If swallowed and person is conscious, rinse mouth with water
for at least 15 minutes. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed
to do so by medical professional. Get medical attention immedi­
ately .
0 Note
Liquid electrolyte leaked from a broken mirror glass will damage any
plast ic surfaces it comes in contact with. Clean up spilled electro lyte
immediately with clear water and a sponge.
[ i J Tips
• Switching off the dimming function of the inside rearview
mirror also deactivates the automatic dimming function of the
exterior mirrors.
• Automatic dimming for the mirror only operates properly if the
light striking the inside mirror is not hindered by other objects. •

the red display appears or disappears.
The digital compass only works with the ignition turned on. The direc­
tions are displayed as initials:
N (North), NE (Northeast), E (East), SE
(Southeast), S (South), SW (Southwest), W (West), NW (Northwest).

To avoid inaccurat e directions, do not allow any remote controls ,
electrical systems, or metal parts close to the mirror. •

• Adjust the driver 's seat only when the vehicle is stationary . You
risk an accident otherw ise.
• The power adjustment for the front seat s al so works with the
ignit ion switched off or with the ignition key removed. For this
reason, children should never be left unattended in the vehicle -
they could be injured!
• Exerci se caution when adjusting the seat height . Unsupervised
or careless seat adjustment can pi nch fingers or hands causing
injuries .
• While the vehicle is mo ving , the seatba cks of the front seats
mu st not b e inclined to o far to the rear bec ause the effectiveness
of the safety belts and the airbag system is se verely compromised
- there is a ris k of injury.•
Easy entry function
The easy entry function makes it easier for the rear
passengers to enter and leave the vehicle.

- Remove the cigaret te lig hter immed iate ly. -
Light your c igarette from the red-hot heating coil of th e
cigare tte l ighter .
- Return the ciga rette lighte r to its socket.
Using the socket
- Remove the cigarette lighter.
- Insert the plug of the el ectrical device into the cigarette
lighter socke t.
The so cket of the ciga re tte lighter may be used for 12-volt app liances
w ith maximum consumption of up to 100 watts, such as a flash light ,
sm all vacuum cleane r, etc.
Before you purchase any accessor ies, always read and follow the
information in =>
page 345, "Additional accessor ies and parts
replacement" .
& WARNING
• Use care when using the cigarette lighter . Inattentive or unsu­
per vis ed u se of the cig arette lighter can cause bu rn s - risk of
injury!
• The cigarette lighter work s when the ignition is switched off or
with the ignition key remo ved . Child ren shou ld never be left unsu­
pervised in the vehicle, or there could be ri sk of fire!
• The power outlets and therefore the electrical acce ssories
connected to them operate only with the ignition on . Improper
use of th e outlets or of electri cal accessories can lead to seriou s
i njuries or cause a fire. Fo r thi s reason , children should neve r be
left unattended in th e vehicle -they could be injur ed!

The rear window defogger can be t urned o n permanently by press ing
t he
IQlil] bu tton for more t han two seconds . This rema ins s tored until
the ignition is switched off . A rea r window defogger that was
switched on also remains stored for 1 S minutes after the ignition is
switched off .
I f the eng ine is restarted within these 15 minutes, the rear window
defogger is activa ted for 10 to 20 minu tes, depending on o utside
temperature. When a vehicle is parked for a short time, the rear
window defogger does not need to be m anually act ivated aga in.
<£' For the sake of the environment
As soon as the rear window is clear, yo u should switc h the rear
w indow defogger off. The reduced power consumption has a benefi­
cial effec t on fue l cons umption. •

Deactivating
- Press the [AC] button .
Activating
-Press the !AC ] button again .
The coo ling system is turned on in AC mode . The heating and ventila ­
tion system is controlled automatically .
W Tips
If the LED in the switch continues to illuminate after AC mode has
been t urned off( = turning the AC off), there is a fau lt in an air-condi­
tioning component . Please consult an authorized dealership if there
is an operat ing problem. •

- Rotate the thum bwheel loca ted next to the ou tlet to open
or cl ose it .
- To adjust the direction of the airflow from the outlet,
move the tab in the center of the outlet in the desired
direction . T he direction of the air delivered from the vents
can be a djusted horizontally and vertica lly.
The air outlets are actuated either automatically or manually
depending on the operat ing mode se lected. Heated or unheated
fresh a ir o r cooled air flows from the vents .

The rear win dow defogger clears the rear window of
condensation.
- Press th e [llW] button to turn t he rea r window defogger on
and off.
Th e re ar window defogge r wo rks only w hen the engine is running. The
indicator light in the button i llum inates when the rear window
defogger is on.
T he rear w indow defogger is sw itched off automatically after 10 to
20 min utes, depending o n the outsi de temperature .
T he rear win dow defogger can be tu rned on permanen tly by pressing
the
ICiW] button for more than two seconds. This rema ins stored until
t he igni tion is sw itched off. A re ar window defogger that was
switched on also remains stored for 15 minutes after the ignition is
switched off.
If the e ng ine is restarted within these 15 minutes, the rear window
defogger is activated for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on outside
t emperature. When a vehicle is par ked fo r a short time, the rear
window defogger does not need to be man ua lly activated again.

Ignition Lock and ignition switch
Starting engine with the key
The ignition is switched on and the engine started with
the ignition key.

P or N posi tion.
- Press the key => fig. 109 -the engine wi ll start .
By pressing the key without stepp ing on the clutch or the b rake, the
i gn itio n is switc hed on and o ff . With the ignition on, the steeri ng
w heel is unlocked.
You can o nly remove the key with the i gnition switc hed off . To do this,
you have to press on the key ag ain. Wi th an a utomat ic transm iss io n,
the se lector lever must be in the P pos ition.
W hen s tarting the eng ine, major electrica l loads a re swi tched off
temporarily .
After startin g a cold eng ine, there may be a brief period of increased
noise be cause the oil p ress ure mu st firs t b uild up in t he hydr auli c
valve adjuste rs. This is normal and not a cause for concern. If the eng
ine s hould not start immediately, the starting process is
a u tom atically st op ped aft er a sh ort t ime. Re peat sta rtin g p ro cedu re.
Driver message in the instrument cluster display
Press brake pedal to start engine
T h is message ap pears i f yo u do not step on the brake pedal to start
t he engine on a vehicle w ith an au toma tic transmission .
Engage N or P to start engine
This message appea rs when at tempti ng to start the eng ine if the
sele ctor lever fo r the au tomatic t ransm ission is no t in the P or N po si·
t ion . The engine can on ly be sta rted wi th the selecto r in these posi­
tions.
Shift to P , otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if lever
is not in P .
This message app ears fo r sa fe ty reasons along with a wa rning sig nal.
It appea rs if the selector lever for t he automat ic transm iss io n is not
in the P posi tion af ter the ignition is sw itched off . M ov e t he se lector

& WARNING
• Always take the key with you whenever you leave your vehicle.
Otherwise, the engine could be started or electrical equipment
such a s the power windows could be operated . This can lead to
serious in jury.
• Never leave children or per sons requiring assistan ce unat­
tended in the vehicle. The doors can be locked u sing the remote
transmitter, p reventing people from escaping from the vehicle on
their own in the event of an emergency. Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be exposed to very high or very low temperatures. ..,

• Never remo ve the ignition key from the ignition look while the
vehicle is moving. Otherwi se, the steering lock could suddenly
engage and you would not be able to steer the vehicle.

• In the event of a malfunction in the electronic ignit ion lock a
symbo l in th e instr umen t cluster flashes with the message
Ignition
lock defective .
• Avoid h igh eng ine speeds, fast acce lerat ion or heavy eng ine loads
whi le the engine is still co ld. This cou ld damage the engine .
<£> For the sake of the environment
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emiss ions,
do not let your vehicle s tand and w arm up. Be re ady to dr ive off i mme­
diately after starting your ve hicle. Mai ntain mode rate speed until the
eng ine is complete ly w arm . R emembe r, the eng ine per forms best at
operat ing temperature.

• If the key ca nnot be removed from the ignition lock , yo u have to
pull the mec hanica l key o ut o f the maste r key in o rde r to be able to

Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circ umstances, the engine can be
switched off while the vehicle is mov ing . The eng ine will be switched
off if you press on the key for an extended period.
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop .
• The brake booster and servotronic only work when the engine
is running . With the ignition turned off, you ha ve to apply more
force when steering or braking. Since you cannot steer and stop
normally, this can lead to accident s and serious injuries.
• The radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10 minute s even
after you have turned of f the engine and removed the ignition key.
The radiator fan can also turn on a gain if the engine coolant heats
up becau se of intense sunlight or heat build-up in the engine
compartment.

Do not stop the engine immediately after har d or extended dr iving.
Keep the eng ine runni ng fo r approx imately two m in utes to p revent
excessive heat b uild -up. •

Starting and stopping the engine
with convenience key

Starting the engine with the

This button switches on the ignition and starts the
engine.

By pressing the [STAR T ENGINE STOP] button without depressing
the clutch or the brake peal, the ignition is switched on and switched
off by pressing it again.
If the engine does not start immediately, stop trying after 10 seconds
and then try to restart the engine about 30 seconds later.
After a cold engine is started, there may be a brief period of increased
noise because oil pressure must first build up in the hydraulic valve
adjusters. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
Driver message in the instrument cluster display
No key identified
This message appears when the !START ENGINE STOP] button is
pressed if there is no master key inside the vehicle or if the system
does not recognize it. For example, the master key cannot be recog­
nized if it is covered by an object (e.g. aluminum brief case) which
screens the radio signal. Electronic devices such as cell phones can
also interfere with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you press the !START ENGINE STOP)
button to start the engine and do not depress the brake pedal. The
engine can only be started if the brake pedal is depressed.
Engage N or P to start engine
This message appears when attempting to start the engine if the
selector lever for the automatic transmission is not in the P or N posi­
tion. The engine can only be started with the selector in these posi­
tions.
Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the.:! symbol if the master key is
removed from the vehicle with the engine running. It is intended to
remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey
without the master key.
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you cannot switch on the
ignition after stopping the engine and you also cannot start the
engine again. Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle from the outside
with the key.
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if lever
is not in P.
This message appears for safety reasons along with a warning signal.
It appears if the selector lever for the automatic transmission is not
in the P position when switching off the ignition with the
!START ENGINE STOP] button. Move the selector lever to the P _..

position, otherwise the vehicle is not secured aga inst rolling away.

asphyxiation.
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop.
• The brake booster and servotronic only work when the engine
is running . With the ignition turned off , you have to apply more
force when steering or braking. Since you cannot steer and stop normally, this can lead to accidents and serious injuries.

• Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and heavy engine loa ds until

Emergency OFF function
If necessary, the eng ine ca n be switched off with the se lecto r lever in
t he R, Dor S* po sitio ns. To d o so, step o n the b rake pedal and pr ess

! ST ART ENGINE STOPJ button (vehicle speed must be
les s than 6 mph / 10 km /h.
& WARNING
• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop.
• The brake booster and servotronic only work when the engine
is running . With the ignition turned off , you have to apply more
force when steering or braking. Since you cannot steer and stop normally , this can lead to accidents and serious injuries .
• For safety reasons, you should always park your vehicle with
the selector lever in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inadvertently
roll away .
• After the engine has been switched off , the radiator fan can
continue to run for up to 10 minutes -even with the ignition
switched off. It can also switch on again after some time if the
coolant temperature rises as the result of a heat buildup or if the
engine is hot and the engine compartment is additionally heated
by the sun's rays.
