The light illuminates when the ignition is switch­
ed on.
It goes out afte r the engine has been
started. T his indicates that the brake warn ing
light is f unct ion ing properly.
If the brake warning light does not light up

If the bJ ind icator light blinks while driving , the
ESC o r ASR (A nti-Sl ip Regulation) is act ively regu­
l ating .
If the
bJ ind icator light turns on, the system has
switched the ESC off. In t his case, you can switch
t h e ign it io n off and then on to swi tch the ESC on
again. The indicator light t urns off when the sys­
tem is functioning fu lly .

A WARNING
If the 11111 (USA models)/ . (Canada mod­
e ls) br ake system indicator light turns on to­
gether with the ABS and ESC ind icator lights,
the ABS/ESC regulating function may have
failed. F unctions that stabilize the vehicle are
no longer ava ilab le. This could cause the vehi­
cle to swerve and increase the risk of sliding. Drive carefully to the nearest authorized Aud i
dealer and have the malfunction corrected .

ABS /(@) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL) .
The warning/indicator light fIE) (USA models)/
ti] (Canada models) will come on for a few sec­
onds when the ign it ion is switched on. The light
will go out after an automatic check sequence is
comp leted.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
-The warning/indicator light does not illuminate
when you switch the ign it ion on .
- The warning/indicator light does not go out af­
ter a few seconds.
- The warning/indicator light illuminates while driving .
The ESC indicator light a lso illuminates if there is
a ma lfunction in the ABS. The message
Stabiliza­
tion control (ESC): Fault! See owner's manual
also appears in the instrument cluster display
and a warning tone sounds.
The brake system will still respond even with­
out the assistance of the ABS system. See your
authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to re ­
store full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system

lock (EDL)
The ED L works together with the ABS . The ABS
warn ing light will come on if there is a ma lfunc­
tion in the EDL system

A WARNING
- If the fIE) (USA models)/ tl] (Canada mod­
els) warning light does not go out, or if it
comes on while dr iv ing, the ABS system is
not working proper ly . The vehicle can then
be stopped only with the standard brakes
(without ABS). You will not have the protec­
tion ABS provides. Contact your authorized
Audi dealer as soon as possible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning light and
the
9 warning light come on together, the
rear wheels could lock up first under hard
braking. Rear wheel lock-up can cause loss
of vehicle control and an acc ident. Have your
veh icle repaired immediately by your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop .
Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake
applications .
-Canada models: If the brake warn ing light
• and the ABS warning light
tlJ come on
together, the rear whee ls could lock up first
under hard b raking. Rear whee l lock-up can
cause loss of vehicle control and an acci­
dent . Have your vehicle repaired immediate­
ly by your authorized Audi dea ler or quali­
fied workshop. Drive slowly and avoid sud­
den, hard brake applications.

The fl (USA models)/ EI (Canada mode ls) indi­
cator light monitors the safety systems (e.g. a ir­
bags, pretensioners) and illum inates for a few
seconds each time you switch the ignition on.
If the
II (USA models) tEI (Canada models) in­
dicator light does not go out, or if it illuminates
wh ile you are driving, or if it starts to blink, then
there is a malfunct ion somewhere in the system .
If the light does not illuminate when you switch
the ignition on, this also means there is a mal­
function.
A WARNING ~
If yo u have a ma lf u nction in the safety sys-
tems, contact your authorized Aud i dealer im­
mediately. Otherwise the safety systems may
not work properly in an accident.

Driving
had made a fu ll brake application. The laws of
physics cannot be suspended even with ESC
and its associated components ( ABS, ASR,
EDS) . In corners and when road or weather
conditions are bad, a ful l brake application
can cause the vehicle to sk id or the rea r end to
break away- r isk ing an accide nt.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep your
driving speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system warns if the driver ex ­
ceeds a prev ious ly stored max imum speed. A
warn ing tone wi ll sound as soon as the vehicle
speed exceeds the set speed by about
3 mph
(3 km/h) . At the same time, a warning symbo l
appears in the display. The symbol 's appearance
might be d ifferent in some models.
The speed warning system has two warn ing
thresho lds that funct ion independent ly of each
other and that have somew hat different purpos­
es:
Speed warn ing 1
You can use speed warn ing 1 to set the maximum
speed wh ile you are dr iving . This setting wi ll re ­
main in effect unti l yo u turn
off the ignition, as­
sum ing that you have not changed or reset the
sett ing .
The . (USA models)/ . (Canada mode ls)
speed warning symbol in the wa rning
1 display
appears when you exceed the maximum speed . It
goes out when the speed falls below the stored
maximum speed .
The speed warning symbo l will also go out if the
speed
exceeds the stored maximum speed by
more than about 25 mph (40 km/h) for at least
10 seconds . The stored maximum speed is de let­
ed.
Speed warn ing 2
Stor ing warning 2 is recommended if yo u always
want to be reminded of a certain speed, for ex­
ample when you are traveling in a country that

has a general maximum speed limit, or if you do
not want to exceed a specified speed for winter
tires.

when you exceed the stored speed limit. Unlike
warning
1, it will not go out unt il the vehicle

Loose items in the luggage compartment can
shift suddenly, changing vehicle handling charac­
teristics . Loose items can also increase the risk of
serious personal injury in a sudden vehicle ma­
neuver or in a collision.
~ Distribute the load evenly in the luggage com­
partment.
~ Always place and properly secure heavy items in
the luggage compartment as low and as far for­
ward as possible

~ Make sure that the rear seatback is securely
latched in place.
A WARNING ,~ -
Improperly stored luggage or other items can
fly through the vehicle causing serious per­
sonal injury in the event of hard braking or an
accident. To help reduce the risk of serious
personal injury:
- Always put objects, for example, luggage or
other heavy items in the luggage compart­
ment.
-Always secure objects in the luggage com­
partment using the tie-down eyelets and
suitable straps.
A WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehi­
cle handles . To help reduce the risk of a loss
of contro l leading to serious personal injury:
- Always keep in mind when transporting heavy objects, that a change in the center of
gravity can also cause changes in vehicle
hand ling:
- Always distribute the load as evenly as
possible.
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the
luggage compartment as possible.
- Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating
or the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating specified
on the safety compliance sticker on the left
door jamb. Exceeding permissible weight
standards can cause the vehicle to slide and
handle differently .

A WARNING
-To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from
being drawn into the vehicle, always keep the
rear lid closed while driving.
- Never transport objects larger than those
fitting completely into the luggage area be­
cause the rear lid cannot be fully closed.
- If you absolutely must drive with the rear lid
open, observe the following notes to reduce
the risk of poisoning:
- Close all windows,
- Close the power top,
- Open all a ir outlets in the instrument pan-
el,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed.
A WARNING ~ -
Always make sure that the doors, all win­
dows , the power top and the rear lid are se­
curely closed and locked to reduce the risk of
in jury when the vehicle is not being used.
- After closing the rear lid, always make sure
that it is properly closed and locked.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended espe ­
cially with the rear lid left open. A child
could crawl into the vehicle through the lug­
gage compartment and close the rear lid be­
coming trapped and unable to get out. Be­
ing trapped in a vehicle can lead to serious
personal injury.
- Never let children play in or around the vehi­
cle.
- Never let passengers ride in the luggage
compartment. Vehicle occupants must a l­
ways be properly restrained in one of the
ve­
hicle's seating positions.
(D Tips
-Air circulation helps to reduce w indow fog­
ging. Stale air escapes to the outside
through vents in the trim panel. Be sure to
keep these slots free and open.

Why use safety belts?
Frontal collisions and the law of physics
Frontal crashes create very strong forces for peo­
ple riding in vehicles .

The physical principles are simple. Both the vehi­
cle and the passengers possess energy which var ­
ies with vehicle speed and body weight. Engi­
neers call this energy "kinetic energy."
The higher the speed of the vehicle and the
greater the vehicle's weight, the more energy
that has to be "absorbed" in the crash.
Veh icle speed is the most significant factor.
If
the speed doubles from 15 to 30 mph (25 to
50 km/h), the energy increases 4 times!
Because the passengers of this vehicle are not us­
ing safety belts ¢

at the same speed the vehicle was moving just
before the crash, until something stops them -

The same principles apply to people sitting in a
~ vehicle that is involved in a frontal collision. Even ......

Safety belts
(2,000 lbs. o r 1,000 kg) or more . At greater
speeds, these forces are even higher.
People who do not use safety belts are also not
attached to their vehicle. In a frontal collision
they will also keep moving forward at the speed
their vehicle was travelling just before the crash.
Of course, the laws of physics don't just apply to
frontal collisions, they determine what happens in all kinds of accidents and collisions.
What happens to occupants not wearing
safety belts?
In crashes unbelted occupants cannot stop
themselves from flying forward and being in­
jured or killed . Always wear your safety belts!

Unbelted occupants are not ab le to resist the tre­
mendous forces of impact by holding tight or
bracing themselves. W ithout the benefit of safe­
ty restraint systems, the unrestrained occupant
will slam v iolently into the steering wheel, in­
strument panel, windshield, or whatever else is i n the way ¢

Safe ty belts
Never rely o n airbags alone for protection . Even
when they deploy, airbags provide only additional
protection. A irbags are not supposed to dep loy in
all kinds of accidents. A lthough your Audi is
equipped w ith airbags, all vehicle occupants, in­
cluding the driver, must wear safety belts cor ­
rectly in order to minimize the risk of severe in­
jury or death in a crash .
Remember too, that airbags will deploy only
once and that your safety belts are a lways there
to offer protect ion in those accidents in wh ic h
airbags are not supposed to deploy or when they
have a lready dep loyed. Unbel ted occupants can
a lso be thrown o ut of the veh icle where eve n
mo re severe or fatal injur ies can occur .
It is also important for the rear pass enge rs to
wear safety belts co rrectly. Unbelted passengers
i n t he rea r seats endanger no t on ly themse lves
but also the drive r and other passengers

thrown forward violently, where they can hit and
in jure the driver and/or front seat passenger.
Safety belts protect
People think it's possible to use the hands to
brace the body in a minor collision . It's simply
not true!

Safety belts used properly can make a b ig d iffer­
ence. Safety belts help to keep passengers in
their seats, gradually reduce energy levels ap­
plied to the body in an accident, and he lp prevent
the uncont rolled moveme nt that can cause seri­
ous injur ies. In addition, safety belts reduce the
danger of being thrown out of the veh icle .

Safety be lts attach passengers to the car an d give
them the benefit of being s lowed down more
gently or "soft ly" thro ugh the "give" in the safety
belts, crush zones and other safety feat ures engi­
neered into today's vehicles. By "absorbing" the
k inet ic energy over a longer per iod of t ime, the
safety belts make the forces on the body more
"tole rab le" and less likely to cause inj ury.
Although these examples are based on a frontal
collision, safety be lts ca n also substantially re ­
duce the r isk o f injury in ot her kinds of crashes.
So, whethe r yo u're on a long trip or just going to
the cor ne r store, a lways b uckle up and make s ure
othe rs do, too. Ac ciden t stat ist ics show that veh i­
cl e o ccupants prope rly wearing safety bel ts have
a lowe r risk of being injured and a m uch better
chance of surviving an acc ident . Properly using
safety be lts also great ly increases the ability of
the supp lemental airbags to do their job in a col­
li sion. For this reason, wearing a safety belt is le­
gally required in most countries including much
of the United States and Canada .
Although your Aud i is equipped with airbags, you
still have to wear the safety belts provided. Front
airbags, for examp le, are activated only in some
frontal collisions. The front airbags are not act i­
vated in all frontal collisions, in side and rear co l­
li sions, in roll overs or in cases where the re is not
eno ugh deceleration throug h impa ct to the front
of the vehicle. The same goes for the other a irbag
systems in your Audi. So, always wear your safety
belt and make sure everybody in your vehicle is
properly rest rained!

across the strongest bones of your body.

Airbag syste m
Front airbags
Description of front airbags
The airbag system can provide supplemental
protection to properly restrained front seat occu­
pants.

Your veh icle is equipped with an "Advanced Air­
bag System" in compliance with Un ited States
Federa l Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
(FMVSS)
208, as well as Canada Motor Vehicle
Safety Sta ndard (CMVSS)
208 as app licable at
the time your vehicle was manufactured. The
safety belts for the seats have "pretensioners"
that help to take slack out of the belt system.
The pretensioners are also activated by the elec­
tronic control unit for the airbag system.
The front safety be lts also have load limiters to
help reduce the forces applied to the body in a
crash.
The airbag for the driver is in the steering wheel
hub
<=>fig . 146 and the airbag for the front pas­
senger is in the instrument panel<=>
fig. 147. The

There is a lot you need to know about the airbags
in your vehicle . We urge you to read the detailed
i nformation about airbags, safety belts and child
safety in this and the other chapters that make
up the owner's literature. Please be sure to heed
the WARNINGS -they are extremely important
for your safety and the safety of your passengers,
especially infants and small children .

Never rely on airbags alone for prote ct ion.
- Even when they deploy, airbags provide only supp lemental protection.
- Airbag work most effectively when used with properly worn safety be lts.
- Therefore, always wear your safety belts and make sure that everybody in your veh icle is
properly restrained .

A person on the front passenger seat, espe­
cially infants and small ch ildren, wi ll receive
serious inju ries and can even be killed by be­
ing too close to the airbag when it inf lates.
- Although the Advanced Airbag System in
-
your vehicle is designed to turn off the front passenger airbag i f an infant or a small child
is on the front passenger seat, nobody can
absolutely guarantee that deployment un­
der these special conditions is impossible in
all conceivable situations that may happen
during the useful life of your vehicle.
- The Advanced Airbag System can deploy in
accordance with the "low risk" option under

in the front seat ing pos ition.
- For their own safety, all chi ld ren, especially
12 years and younger, should always ride in
the back proper ly restrained for their age
and size .

Airbag syste m
-a small adu lt or teenager is on the front pas ­
senger seat
- a passenger who is not sitting upright with
their back against a non -reclined backrest with
their feet on the vehicle floor in front of the
seat is on the front passenger seat.
I f the front passenger airbag dep loys, the Feder ­
al Standard requires the airbag to meet the "low
risk" deployment criteria to help reduce the risk
of injury through interaction with the airbag.
"Low risk" deployment occurs in those crashes
that take place at lower decelerations as def ined

To red uce the risk of inj ury when an ai rbag in­
fla tes, a lways wear safety bel ts p roperly.
- If you are unrestrained, leaning fo rwa rd, s it­
t ing s ideways or o ut of pos ition in any way,
yo ur risk of in jury is much h igher .
- Yo u will also re ceive serious injur ies and
could even be killed if you are up aga inst the
airbag or too close to it when it inflates -
even with an Advanced Airbag¢

A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing chi ld safety seat
installed on the front passenger seat wi ll be
ser iously injured and can be killed if the front
airbag inflates - even w ith an Advanced Airbag
System.
- Although the Advanced A irbag System in
your vehicle is designed to turn off the front
airbag when a rearward-facing child re­
straint has been installed on the front pas­
senger seat, nobody can absolutely g uaran­
tee that deployment is impossible in all con­
ceivable s ituations that may happen during
the usef ul life of your vehicle .
- The inflating a irbag w il l hit the child safety
seat or infant c arrier wi th great force and

w ill smash the child safety seat and child
aga inst the back rest, center armrest, door,
or roof.
- Always install rearward-facing child re­
straints in the back seat.
- If you must install a rearward facing child
safety seat on the front passenger seat be­
cause of exceptional circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not
come on and stay on, immediately install
the rea r-facing child safety seat in a rear
seating posi tion and have the ai rbag system
inspected by your au thori zed Au di dealer.
A WARNING
If, in exceptional ci rcums tances, you must in­
stall a forw ard-facing child res traint on the
front passenger's seat:
- Always make sure the forward-fa cing sea t
has been des igned and certified by its man ­
ufacturer for use on a front seat with a pas­
senger front and side airbag.
- Never put the fo rward -facing child restraint
up against or very nea r the instrument pan ·
el.
-Always move the passenge r seat into its
rearmost position in the seat's fo re and aft
ad justment range, as far away from the a ir­
bag as poss ible, before install ing the for­
ward-facing chi ld restraint. The backrest
m ust be adjusted to an upr ight position.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
li ght comes on and stays on all t he time
wheneve r the ign it ion is switched on.
Advanced Airbag System components
The fro nt passenge r seat i n your veh icle has a lot
of ve ry important parts of the Advanced A irbag
System i n it. These parts incl ude t he weight­
sens ing mat, senso rs, wir ing, bracke ts, and
more . The f unction o f the system in the front
passenger seat is checked by the electro nic con­
tro l unit when the ignition is on . The control unit
monitors the Advanced Airbag System and turns
the airbag ind icator light on when a malfunction
i n the system components is detected. The func-
