A WARNING
-
Improperly in stalled chi ld safety seats in­
crease the risk of serious personal injury and
death in a collision.
- Always make sure that the safety belt re­
tractor is locked when installing a child safety seat. An unlocked safety belt retrac­
tor cannot hold the child safety seat in place dur ing normal driving or in a crash.
- Always buckle the child safety seat firmly in
place even if a child is not sitting in it. A
loose child safety seat can fly around during
a sudden stop or in a collision.
- Always make sure that the rear seat back­
rest to wh ich the center rear safety belt* is
attached is secure ly latched whenever the
rea r cente r safety belt is being used to se­
cur e a ch ild rest raint.
- If the backrest is not securely latched, the
child and the child restraint will be thrown
forwar d toge ther w it h the backrest and will
st rike parts of the vehicle interior. The ch ild
can be se riously in jured or killed .
- Never ins tall rear-f acing chi ld safety sea ts
or infant carriers on the front passen ger
seat . A child will be serious ly inju red and
can be killed when the passenger airbag in­
flates.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the ch ild safety seat and chi ld
against the backrest, center armrest, door
or roof .
- Always install rear-facing child safety seats
o r infant carriers on the rear seat.
- Forward-fac ing ch ild safety seats or infant
carriers installed on the front passenger's
seat may interfere with the deployment of
the a irbag and cause serious injury to the
child.
- It is safe r to install a forward-fac ing ch ild
safety seat on the rear seat.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS when­
ever using a child res trained in a veh icle is
being

tant things to know.
A WARNING

A lways take special precautions if you must
i nstall a forward or rearward-facing child re­
stra int on the front passenger's seat in excep­
tional s ituations:
- Whenever a forward or rearward-fac ing
child restraint is installed on the front pas­
senger sea t, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
~; lig ht must come on and stay on whenev­
er the ign ition is swi tched on.
- I f the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~; light
does not come on and stay on, perform the
checks desc ribe d

- T ake the child res tra int off the front passen­
ge r seat and inst all it prope rly at one of the
rear sea t positions i f the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG
OFF ~; light does not stay on whenever
the ignition is switched on .
- Imp roper installat ion of child restra ints can
reduce the ir effectiveness or even prevent
them from providing any protect ion .
- An imprope rly installed child restra int can
interfere with the airbag as it deploys and
serio usly injure or even kill the chi ld.
- Always carefully follow the manufacturer's
instr uctions provided with the child sa fety
seat or ca rr ie r.
- After checking to make su re that the child
rest raint is proper ly installed, make ce rtain
that the child restraint is co rrectly recog­
n ized by the capacitive passenger detection
system in the front passenger seat and that
the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~; light sig­
na ls the correct front passenger fronta l air­
b ag sta tus.
A WARNING
F orw ard-facing child restra int s:
- Always make sure the forward-facing sea t
has been des igned and certified by its man­
ufa cturer for use on a fron t sea t with a pa s­
senger front and side air bag.

Child sa fety
- Never put the forward -facing child restraint
up, against or very near the instrument pan­
el.
- Always move the front passenger seat to
the h ighest position in the up and down ad­
justment range and move it back to the
rearmost position in the seat's fore and aft
adjustment range, as far away from the air­
bag as possib le, before insta lli ng the for­
wa rd-facing child restra int.
- Always make sure that the safety belt upper
anchorage is beh ind the child restra int and
not next to or in front of t he ch ild restraint
so tha t the safety belt w ill be properly pos i­
tioned.
- Make s ure tha t the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF ~; light comes on and stays on a ll the
time whenever the ignition is switched on.
A WARNING
Rearward-facing child restraints:
- A ch ild in a rea rw ar d-facing child safety seat
insta lled on the front passenger seat wi ll be
seriously injured and can be killed if the
front airbag inflates
-even with an Ad ­
vanced Airbag System.
- The inflating airbag wi ll hit the child safety
seat or infant carrier with great force and
will smash the chi ld safety seat and child
against the backrest , center armrest, door
or roof.
- Always be especially careful if you must in­
sta ll a rearward facing child safety seat on
the front passenger seat in exceptional c ir­
c u mstances.
- Make sure that the
PAS SENGER AIR BAG
OFF ~; light comes on and stays on all the
t ime whenever the ignition is switched on.
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~; light
does not come o n and stay o n, immed iate ly
install the rea r-fa cing child safety seat in a
re ar seat ing pos ition and have the airbag
system inspe cte d by your Aud i de aler.

Activating the convertible locking retractor
Use the convertible locking retractor to secure a
child restraint.
Always heed the child safety seat manufacturer's
i nstruct ions when installing a child restra int in
your vehicle. To activate the convertible locking r etractor:
.,. Place the child restraint on a seat, preferably
on the rear seat .
.,. Slowly pull the belt all th e w ay out .
.,. Route it around or through the child restra int
be lt
path~ .,&..
.,. Push the ch ild safety sea t down with yo ur full
weigh t to ge t the safety belt rea lly tigh t.
.,. Insert t he be lt tong ue into the b uck le for that
seating position .
.,. Guide the safety be lt back into the retractor un ­
til the belt lies flat and snug on the ch ild safety
seat.
.,. You shou ld hear a "cl icking" noise as the belt
w inds back into the inertia reel. Test the con ­
vert ib le lock ing retractor by pull ing on the belt.
You s hou ld no lo nge r be able to pull the belt
out of the retracto r. T he convertib le lock ing re ­
tracto r is now activa ted .
.,. Make sure that the red release button is facing
away from the chi ld restraint so that it can be
unb uc kled quickly .
.,. Pull on the belt to make sure the safety belt is
properly t ight and fastened so that the seat
cannot move forward or s ideways more than
one inch (2 .5 cm) .
A WARNING
Using the wrong ch ild rest raint or an improp­
e rly insta lled child restra int can ca use se rio us
pe rsonal injury or death in a crash.
- Always make sure that the safety be lt re ­
tr actor is locked whe n in stalling a c hild
safety seat . An un lo cked sa fety be lt retr ac­
tor cannot hold the chi ld safety seat in p lace
during normal driving or in a crash.
- Always buckle t he chi ld safety seat fi rm ly in
p lace even if a chi ld is not sitting in it. A
loose chi ld safety seat can fly a round during
a sudden stop or in a crash.

~ Tighten the tether strap firmly fo llowing t he
child restraint manufacturer's instructions .
Releasing the tether strap
~ Loosen the tens ion following the ch ild rest rai nt
man ufacturer's instructions.
~ Depress the spring catch on the hook and re ­
l ease it from the anchorage.
(LlJ) Note
I f you leave the ch ild rest rain t with t he tether
s trap firm ly installed for severa l days, this
cou ld leave a mark on the upholstery on the
seat cushion and backrest in the area where
the tether strap was installed. The upholstery
wou ld also be permanently stretched around
the tether strap . This applies especially to
leather seats .
Using tether straps on rearward-facing
child restraints
Current ly, few rear-facing chi ld restraint systems
come wit h a tether. Please read and heed the
chi ld restraint system manufacturer's instruc­
tions carefully to determine how to properly in­
stall the tether.
A WARNING
A child in a rearward-facing chi ld safety seat
installed on the front passenger seat w ill be
ser iously injured and can be killed if the front
airbag inflates -even with an Advanced Air­
bag System .
- T he inflat ing a irbag w ill hit the child safety
seat or infant car rie r with g reat fo rce and
w ill smash the ch ild safety seat a nd ch ild
agai nst t he bac kres t, cen ter armrest, o r
door .
-If you mus t install a rearw ard fac ing c hild
sa fety seat on t he front passenger seat be ­
cause of exceptiona l circumstances and the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~; light does not
come on and stay on, immed iate ly install
the rear-fac ing c hild safety seat in a rear
seating pos it ion and have the airbag system
inspected by your A udi dealer .

disposing of empty oi l containers .
Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service sta­
tion .
Before you check anyt hing in the eng ine compart ­
ment,
alwa ys read and heed all WARNING S¢.&.
in Working in the engine comportment on
page 314.
The engine oil must be changed accord ing to the
intervals specified in your Warranty
& Mainte­
nance booklet . This is very important because the
lubricat ing propert ies of oil diminish gradually
during normal vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the engine oi l should
be changed more frequently. Change oil more of­
ten if you drive most ly short distances, operate
the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominant ly
stop-and-go traffic condit ions, or have your vehi­
cle where temperatures remain below freezing
for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil
look dark after the engine has been running for a
short time. Th is is normal and is not a reason to
change the oil more often than recommended.
Because of the problem of proper disposal, along
with the special tools and necessary expertise re­
qu ired, we strongly recommend that you have
your oil c hanged by an authorized
A udi de aler or
a qualified service station .
If you choos e to change your o il y our self , please
note the following important information:
A WARNING
T o red uce the r isk of pe rsonal injury if yo u
must change the engine oil in your ve hicle
yourse lf:
-Wear eye p rotection.
-To reduce the risk of burns from hot engine
o il, let the eng ine cool down to the touch.
-
-Whe n removing the o il drain plug with your
fingers, stay as far away as poss ible. A lways
Ch eck ing and F illing
keep your forearm pa rallel to the ground to
he lp prevent hot oil from running down your
arm.
-Drain the oil into a container designed for
this purpose, one la rge enough to hold at
least the tota l amount of oil in your engine.
-Engine oil is poisonous. Keep it well out of
the reach of children.
-Continuous contact with used engine o il is
harmful to your skin. Always protect your
skin by washing oil off thoroughly with soap
a nd water.
@ Note
Never mix oil additives with yo ur engine oil.
These additives can damage your engine and
adverse ly affect your Audi limited New Vehi­
cle Warranty.
@) For the sake of the environment
-Before chang ing your oi l, first ma ke sure
you know where you can properly d ispose of
the used oil.
-Always dispose of used engine o il properly.
Do not dump it on garden so il, wooded
areas, into open streams o r down sewage
dra ins.
-Recycle used eng ine o il by tak ing it to a used
eng ine oi l collec tion fac ility in yo ur area, or
contact a se rvice station.
Cooling system
Coolant
The eng ine cooling system is fi lled w ith a mixture
of purified water and coolant additive at the fac­
tory. This coolant must not be not changed.
T he coo lant level is monitored through
the . in­
dicator light
¢page 23. However, we do recom­
mend occasionally checking the coolant leve l
manual ly.
If you must add coo lant, use a mixture of water
and coolant additive. Mixing the coolant add itive
with dist illed water is recommended.

Care and cl eaning
avoid scratches, move the scraper on ly in
one direction and not back and forth.
- Never remove snow o r ice from door win­
dows and mirrors using warm or hot water
because this could cause cracks to form .
- To avoid damage to the rear w indow de­
fogger, do not apply any stickers on the heating wires on the inside of the window .
-Deco rati ve parts /trim
- Never use chrome care or cleaning prod-
ucts.
- Paint
-To red uce the risk of scratches, the vehicle
must be free of dirt and dus t before pol­
ishing or waxing .
- To prevent pa int damage, do not pol ish or
w ax the veh icle in dire ct sunlight.
- To red uce the risk of pa int damage, do not
polish away rust spots.
- Remove cosmetics and sunscreen immedi­
a tely
-these could damage the p aint.
- Displays /instrument cluster
- Make sure that the instrument cluster is
switched off and
has cooled off before
cleaning it.
- Displays, the instrument cluster and the
trim surrounding it must not be cleaned
w ith dry cleaning methods beca use they
cou ld become scratched.
- Make sure no fluids enter the spaces be­
tween the instrument cluster and the
trim, because that could cause damage.
- Controls
- Make sure tha t no fluids enter the con-
trols, because this could ca use damage.
- Safety belts
- Do not remove the safety belts to clean
them .
- N ever clean sa fe ty belts o r their compo­
nents chemically or wi th cor rosive fl uids
or so lvents and neve r allow sharp objects
to come into contact w ith the sa fety belts.
Th is could cause damage to the belt web­
bing.
- If there is damage to the webbing, the
connect ions, the retractors or the b uck les,
348 have them replaced by an authorized Aud

dealer or authorized Aud i Serv ice Facility.
- Te xtile s/artificial leather/ Alcantara
- Never treat art ificial leather/ A lcantara
with leathe r ca re products, solvents, floor
polish, shoe polish, spot remove o r similar
p roducts.
- Have a spec ialist remove stubborn stains
to prevent damage .
- Never use steam cleaners, brushes, hard
sponges, etc. when cleaning.
- Do not turn on the seat heating* to dry the
seat .
- Objects w ith sharp edges, such as zippers
or rivets on clothing or belts, can cause
damage to the surface .
- Open hook and loop fastene rs, for exam­
p le on clothing, can damage seat covers .
Make sure hook and loop fastene rs a re
closed.
- Natural l eather
- N eve r trea t le ather wi th solvents, floor
polish, shoe polish, spot remover or sim i­
lar products .
- Obje cts w ith sharp edges, such as zippe rs
or rive ts on clothing or belts, can cause
damage to the surface .
- N eve r use s team cleaners, brushes, hard
spon ges, etc . when cleaning .
- D o not turn on the seat he ating * to dry the
seat.
- T o he lp prevent the le ather from f ading,
d o not leave the vehicle in d irec t sunlight
for long periods of time . If leav ing the ve­
h icle parked for long periods of time, you
should cove r the leathe r to protect it from
d irect sunlight.

- Insects are easier to remove from paint that
has been freshly waxed.
- Regular waxing can prevent rust spots from
forming.
