• Never open the hood if you see or hear steam or coolant
escaping from the engine compartment -you risk being scalded.
Wait until you can no longer see or hear steam or coolant
escaping.
• The engine compartment of any vehicle is a dangerous area.
Before you perform any work in the engine compartment, turn of
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the warning stickers
=> page 290, "Engine compartment".

Do not continue driving if the_¥_ symbol illuminates. There is a
malfunction in the engine cooling system -you could damage your
engine. •
Engine oil pressure malfunction 't:::f:
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol requires
immediate service or repair. Driving with a low-oil-pres­
sure indication is likely to inflict severe damage to the
engine.
If the ~ symbol appears in the display and blinks, the oil
pressure is too low. An additional driver message can also be
displayed by pressing the
[CHECK] button :
Switch off engine! Oil pressure too low
Immediate actions
- Pull off the road.
- Stop the vehicle.
- Turn off the engine .
-Check the engine oil level with the dipstick => page 305.
Dipstick readings checks too low
- Top off oil to the proper level=> page 306 .
Make sure that the oil pressure warning symbol~
appears no longer in the display before you start driving
again.
Dipstick reading checks OK
- If the oil pressure warning symbol ~ starts flashing
again even though the engine oil level checks OK on the
dipstick,
do not continue driving and do not let the
engine run in idle.
Instead, contact your authorized Audi
dealer for assistance.
[I) Tips
• The engine oil pressure symbol~ is not an indicator for a low
engine oil level. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in your
engine at regular intervals, preferably each time you refuel, and
always before going on a long trip.
• The yellow oil level warning indication
~ requires oil refill or
workshop service without delay. Do not wait until the red oil pres­
sure warning ~ starts to flash before you respond to the low oil
level warning
..'!' . By then, your engine may already have suffered
serious damage. •
Steering malfunction i
If there is a malfunction in the electronic steering column
lock, the steering cannot be unlocked.
If the i symbol in the display blinks, there is a malfunction
in the electronic steering column lock. An additional driver

Your veh icle must not be towed in the event of a malfunction in
the electronic steering column lock because it cannot be steered
due to the locked steering.
If it is towed with the stee ring locked ,
there i s the risk of an ac cident. •
Ignition lock malfunction ~
A malfunction in the ignition lock must be repaired imme­
d iately .
If the .Pe symbo l in t he display b links, the re is a malfunc tion
in the electronic ignition lock . A n add itional driver message
can a lso be disp laye d by pressing the [
CHE CK) button:
Ignition lock defective. Contact workshop !
- Do not tu rn th e engine off .
- Drive immed iately to an authorized Aud i dea ler to have
the malfu nct io n correc ted .
If there is a malfunction in the e lectron ic ignition loc k, the ignit ion

to have the cause of the malfunction corrected.

one warning tone sounds. A

detail. The driver warn ing goes out after about 5 seconds, but it can
be brought up again a t any time by pressi ng the
I CHECK ] button.
Check the d isp layed fu nction as soon as possible . If
more than one

the othe r for about 2 seconds.

This reminder appears along with the -i. symbol if the master key is
removed from the vehicle with the engine running. It is intended to
remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey
without the master key.
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you cannot switch off the
ignition after stopping the engine and you also cannot start the
engine again. What is more, you cannot lock the vehicle from the
outside. •
Light/rain sensor defective ~'j.
Automatic headlights/ automatic wipers defective
If the symbol illuminates, the light sensor has failed. For safety
reasons the low beams are turned on permanently with the switch in
AUTO. However, you can continue to turn the lights on and off using
the light switch. In the case of a defect in the rain sensor, the wind­
shield wiper lever functions are still available. Have the light/rain
sensor checked as soon as possible by an authorized Audi dealer. •

When t his symbo l illuminates for t he first time, the fuel reserve in
your vehicle is still between 2 .6 and 3 .2 gallons (10- 12 li te rs) . Refuel
as soon as possible =>

If the symbol lights up, even whe n there is ample fue l in the t ank, and
the text Tank system malfunction! Contact workshop appears in the
displ ay, the re is a fa ult in the system. Con tact a qualified workshop to
have the fault rectified .•
Battery voltage U
If the battery's state of charge is not in the optima l range, the -,
s ymbo l is show n in the display and the d river mess age Low battery
charge: battery will be charged while driving appears.
Wh ile this driver notification is displayed, you have to be prepared for
limited sta rting capabili ty .
Driver message appears and goes out again
If th is driver message appears a fter the ignit ion is t urned on or while
driving and it goes o ut again after a while, the battery has been
adequate ly recharged.

When the symbol illum inates, you can a lter your d riving style to
a ssist the fil ter sel f-cl eanin g process. Drive for a pproxim ate ly 15
m inu tes with the selector lever in the S pos it ion at a min imum speed
of 37 mph (60 km/h) and an engine speed of approximately 2,000
RPM. The temperature inc rease that will result from t his can burn off
the soot in the filte r. The sym bol will switc h off when the cleaning is
su ccessf ul. After a s uccessfu l cleaning, t he re is no need to b ring t he
car to an author ized dealer or qualified workshop because this is part
of nor mal ve hicle operat io n.
If t he symbo l does not switch off, see your authorized dealer or
o ther qualif ied workshop to have the p roblem co rrected.
For mo re information o n the diesel pa rt iculate filter, r efer to
=> page 267.
& WARNING
Always adapt your speed to the cur rent weather , road and traffic
conditions . You should never disobey traffic laws in order to
follow driving recommendations. •

Check Light in the master key
The check light in the master key provides information
about different conditions.
Check light functions in the master key:
Vehicle within range of the key

If the vehicle is within range of the key, the check light comes on
briefly once when a button is pressed.
Vehicle outside the range of the key
If the vehicle is outside the range of the key, the check light comes on
briefly once and then shows the status of the vehicle door locks:
• If the light is flashing quickly, the vehicle is not locked.
• If the light is flashing slowly, the vehicle is locked.
State of master key battery
If the check light does not come on, the battery is dead and has to be
replaced. In addition, when the battery is dead the symbol appears
in the instrument cluster display as well as the message:
Please change key battery

[I] Tips
Please note that the current state of the vehicle door locks can only
be recalled with the master key that was last used to lock the vehicle.
It is possible that a different state is shown for the door locks on the
other master key which is not the same as that of the vehicle. •
Master key battery replacement
Each master key contains a battery housed under the
cover.

We recommend having the battery changed by an authorized
Audi dealer. However, if you wish to replace the dead battery
yourself, proceed as follows:
- Pry apart the base~ fig. 29
© and the cover @ carefully
with a coin.
- Remove the cover (arrow).
- Remove the dead battery from the cover.
- Install the new battery. Please make certain that the"+"
sign on the battery faces down. Correct polarity is shown
on the cover. _..

- Bring the rear lid manually or automatically to the desired

& WARNING
• Never clo se the rear lid inattentively or without che cking fi rst.
Although the closing force of the rear lid is limited, you can still
seriously injure you rself or others .
• Always ensure that no one i s within range of the rear lid when
it i s moving, in particular close to the hinge s and the upper and
lower edges -finger s or hands can be pinched .
• To help prevent poisonous exhaust ga s from being drawn into
the vehicle, always keep the rear lid closed while driving. Never
transport objects larger than those which fit completely into the
luggage ar ea, b eca use then the rear lid cannot be fully closed.
• Never leave your vehicle unattended especially with the rear lid
left open . A child could crawl into the car through the luggage
c ompartment and pull the lid shut , becoming trapped and unable
to get out. To reduce the r isk of per sonal injury, never let children
play in o r around your vehicle. Always keep the rear lid as well a s
the vehicle doors closed when not in u se.
• If there i s a luggage rack or bicycle rack mounted on the rear
lid, it may not be able to open completely or an opened rear lid
may close by itself because of the added weight. So the open rear
lid must be supported or the we ight must be removed from the
luggage rack fir st.

holdi ng the re ar l id w it h your h and . Th e lid can the n be f urth er
opened/closed by hand.
• If the re is a mech anic al prob lem wi th the au tom atic re ar lid
opening process or there is a n obstruction, the process is stopped
immedia tely.
• If there is a mechanical problem with
automati c closing for the
re ar lid or there is an o bst ru ct io n, i t opens ag ain slightly righ t aw ay .
Check to see why the rea r lid could not be closed before attempting
t o close it again .
• If the rea r lid on a locked vehicle is unlocked w ith the midd le
bu tton .::::so n the remo te key, the rear l id is au tom atically loc ke d
again immediately after closing. T his is indicated by the tur n signa ls
blinking.
• The following app lies to veh icles equipped with the Convenience
key * fea ture: if t he re mote cont rol key is left in the l ugg age compart­
me nt, luggage compartment will automatically u nlock itself after
you lock the vehicle. This p revents yo u from unin tentionally lock ing
your key in the l uggage compartment .
• If the veh icle ba tte ry c ha rge drops be low a cer tain level, you can
st ill open or close the rear lid manually, however, you will need to
apply more fo rce to close it.
• As soon as the elect rical connec tion to the t railer socket is
c omple ted o n veh icles with a fa cto ry ins talled towing hi tch , or a
trai ler hitch that was installed later accord ing to factory spec ifica ­
ti ons, the a utoma tic rear li d fu nct io n can only be opera te d via the
hand le in the rear lid .•

Description
A ccess and vehicl e opera tion based on: Mas ter key
remains in driver 's pocket.
Th e Conve nience key vehicle a uth o rization syste m allows keyless
unlocking, lock ing and start ing of the vehicle. You only have to car ry
th e master key on your perso n.
It makes no d ifference whether the master key is i n your jacke t pocke t
or in your br ief case . As soon as you approach yo ur vehicle, the Conve ­
nie nce key recog nizes the reques t fo r access, checks for author izat io n
and enab les the fo llow ing functions:
• Unlo cking the vehicle =>
page 56.
• Loc king the vehicle => page 56.
• Switching on ignition and start ing the eng ine by press ing the
[ S T AR T] button; the master key does not have to be in t he ign it ion

When you lock your vehicle from outside, nobody -especially
children - should remain in side the vehicle . Remember, when you
lock the vehicle from the outside the windows cannot be opened
from the inside .
• When you leave the vehicle, always remove the ignition key
and take it with you. This will prevent pa ssenger s (children, for
example ) from accidentally being locked in the vehicle should
they accidentally press the power locking switch in the front
doors .
• Do not leave children in side the vehicle unsupervised. In an
emergency it would be impossible to open the doors from the
outside w ithout the key .
[ i ] Tips
• In order for the Convenience key to function , you must a lways
carry the master key with yo u.
• In order to be able to unloc k or loc k the vehicle, the a utho rized
master key must be within a range of about S feet (1.5 meters) from
the door o r the rear lid.
• Of course, you can still unlock and lock your veh icle using the
buttons on the master key . T he se lecto r lever must be in the P posi ­
tion .
