- Push the red button @to activate the panic function. The
horn sounds and the turn signa ls flash .
- Push the button @ again to deactivate t he panic f unction.
On vehicles equipped with the Conven ience key* features, the
selector leve r must be in the P position, othe rwise the vehicle will not
lock .

• In orde r to make sure the locking func tion is wor king , you shou ld
always keep your eye on the vehicle to ma ke sure it is properly locked .
• Do not use the remote control if you are ins ide the car, otherwise
you may unintentionally lock the vehicle, and then yo u would set off
the ant i-theft alarm when you try to start the eng ine or open a door.

Operating locks with the key
To lock and unlock the vehicle from the outside, turn the
key in the lock of the driver's door .
The lock cylinder is under the door handle.

Selective unlock feature -the driver can determine in /v1/v1I
which doors are unlocked through the central locking
system .

In the C en tra l locki ng menu you can set wh ich doors you want to have
unlock using the remote control key or the Co nven ience key*. For
example, if you switch the item passenger's door
off , the passenger's
door is no longe r included in the central locking system, and will not
be unlocked by pressing the unlock button on the master key remote
control.
There is also a
sid e selec tive unlocking option available that can be
set to f it your needs. You can continue to unlock all the doors and the
rear lid as before . P ress the opening button on the master key twice.
Automatic Locking (Auto lock) can also be switched on and off. •

• You can unlock and open the doors from the inside by pulling on
the door handle.
• If the driver's door is opened (after you have locked the vehicle
from the inside using the power locking switch) , the door will rema in
unlocked to prevent you from locking yourself out of your vehicle .
After you close the door, you have to lock the driver's door again.
• If you have a crash and the airbag is activated, the doors automat­
ically unlock.
& WARNING
• If you use the power locking switch with the doors closed,
remember that all the vehicle doors will lock.
• locking doors from the inside can help prevent inadvertent
door opening during an accident and can also prevent unwanted
entry from the outside. locked doors can, however, delay assis­
tance to vehicle occupants and hold up rescue efforts from the
outside in an accident or other emergency. •
Emergency locking
If the central locking system fails (power supply), each
door has to be locked separately .

An emergency locking mechanism is integrated in the edge of
the passenger's door and in the rear doors (only visible when
the door is open) .
- Open the door.
- Remove the plastic cap using your vehicle key~ fig. 31.
- Position the key at an angle of 90° to the door trim panel
and push it in the d irection shown by the arrow.
After you close the door, you will no longer be able to open it from the
outs ide.
The door can be opened from the inside by pulling twice on the door
hand le . If the child safety lock is engaged in one of the rear doors, the
door has to be opened from the outside after pulling on the handle
once from the inside. •

You can open the rear lid from inside the vehicle using a
switch in the driver's door.

Closing the Rear lid/Trunk lid
- P ull the rear li d dow n and allow itto drop gent ly. The l id is
then closed automatic ally =>& .
& WARNING
• After closing the rear lid, always pull up on it to make sure that
it i s properly closed . Otherwise it could open suddenly when the
vehicle is moving.
• To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from being drawn into
the veh icle , always keep the rear lid closed while driving. Ne ver
tran sport objects larger than those whi ch fit completely into the
luggage area, bec ause then the rear lid cannot be fully closed.
• Never leave your vehicle unattended e specially with the rear lid
left open . A child could c rawl into the car th rough the luggage
c ompartment and pull the lid shut , be coming trapped and unable
to get out . To reduce the r is k of personal injury, never let children
play in or around your vehicle . Alway s keep the rear lid a s well a s
the vehicle doo rs clo sed when not in u se .

your key in the luggage compartment. •

lid and cause it to rise slightly . In this pos ition the key cannot be
pulled out of the lock cylinder .

I n this state the rear lid can only be unlocked with the unlock button

Closing rear lid/trunk lid
- Press the lock switch in the luggage compartment
=> page 48, fig. 36. The trunk lid moves to the closed posi­
tion by itself and soft close locks it automatically=>&,.
- Closing
is stopped immediately if you again press the
release switch

trunk lid or the lock switch in the luggage compartment.
& WARNING
• After closing the rear lid, always pull up on it to make sure that
it is properly closed. Otherwise it could open suddenly when the
vehicle is moving.
• To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from being drawn into
the vehicle, always keep the rear lid closed while driving. Never
transport objects larger than those which fit completely into the
luggage area, because then the rear lid cannot be fully closed.
• Never leave your vehicle unattended especially with the rear lid
left open. A child could crawl into the car through the luggage
compartment and pull the lid shut, becoming trapped and unable
to get out. To reduce the risk of personal injury, never let children play in or around your vehicle. Always keep the rear lid as well as
the vehicle doors closed when not in use.
• Never close the rear lid inattentively or without checking first.
Although the closing force of the rear lid is limited, you can still
seriously injure yourself or others.
• Always ensure that no one is within range of the rear lid when
it is moving, in particular close to the hinges and the upper and
lower edges -fingers or hands can be pinched.
• Never try to interfere with the rear lid or help it when it is being
opened or closed automatically.

If there is a mechanical problem with automatic closing for the
rear lid or there is an obstruction, it opens again immediately. Check
to see why the rear lid could not be closed before attempting to close
it again.
• The following applies to vehicles equipped with the Convenience
key* feature: if the remote control key is left in the luggage compart­
ment, luggage compartment will automatically unlock itself after
you lock the vehicle. This prevents you from unintentionally locking
your key in the luggage compartment. •

The rear doors have a child safety lock. You can use any
vehicle key to engage and disengage the lock . The child safety
lock is visible only when the door is open.

- To swi tch on the child safety lock, turn the ignition key in
the direction of the arrow .
- To
switch off the child safety lock, turn the ignition key in
the opposite direc tion to the arrow.
The child safety lock prevents the doors from be ing opened from the
inside when you have small children sitting in the rear. •

The power child safety lock prevents the rear doors from
being opened from the inside.

The rear doors are equipped with a power child safety lock . It
is operated with the two safety buttons(!) in the driver's door
~ fig. 38.
-Press the left and/or right safety button to disable the
rear power window(s) and prevent the respective rear door
from being opened from the ins ide . The LED in the button
will light up when the child safety lock is turned
o n .
- Press the illuminated button again to turn the child safety
features
off.
When the child safety lock is activated, the interior door opening
lever is inope ra tive; the door can only be opened from the o utside. In
addition, the window regulator for that door is also inoperative when
the chi ld safety lock is activated .
If the child safety lock has been activated on both the left and r ight
side, then the following features are switched off : the buttons for the
inter io r lights, the sun blind* in the rea r window and the buttons for
the power sun blinds* in the side windows. In addition to this, the
rear climate contro l* is set to the
PAS SIVE mode. Th is means that the
climate controls in the front adjust the heating and ventilat ion in the
rear of the vehicle=>
page 114.
[ i ] Tips
• In order to activate the child safety lock on the left and the right
side, you have to press the two safety buttons in succession.
• Make certain that the indicator light in the corresponding sa fety
button illum inates when the ch ild safety lock is activated .•
Convenience key
A pplies to veh icles : with Conven ience key
Description
Opening your vehicle and starting the engine with the key
still in your pocket.
The Convenience key features is a keyless system which gives you the
possibility to lock and un lock your veh icle, as well as to start the
eng ine without having to use your key.
It does not matte r if you have your key in your jacket pocket or in your
briefcase . As soon as you get within a certain distance to the vehicle,
the system senses that your are approaching, it makes a quick check
to see if you are "authorized" and then it does the following:
• unlocks the vehicle =>

• switches on the ignit io n and s tarts the eng ine w hen yo u press t he
!START) button. You do not have to insert your key into the ignition

& WARNING
• When you lock your vehicle from outs ide, nobody -especially
c hildren -should remain inside the vehicle . Remember , when you
lo ck the vehicle from the outside the window s cannot be opened
from the inside.
• When you leave the vehicle, always remove the ignition key
and take it with you. This will pre vent passengers (children, for
example) from a ccidentally being locked in the vehicle should
they accidentally press the power lock ing switch in the doors .
• Do not leave children inside the vehicle unsupervi sed . In an
emergency it would be impossible to open the doors from the
outside without the key .

your vehicle key w ith you.

comes within 5 ft (1.5 meters) from one of the vehicle doors or the

A doo r will un lock as yo u app roach a door h andle and the system
senses that you have an author ized key . This applies to each door on
the vehicle . The authorized key on ly has to be w it h in a range of abo ut
5 feet (1.5 mete rs) from the respective door .
Whenever yo u un lock a door, the driver's doo r also unloc ks . You can
se t t he powe r lock sys tem using the menu in the M MI system, fo r
example, if you want to unlock just one specific door, or all the veh icle
doors =>
page 44 .
[ i ] Tips
If yo ur vehicle has been s tanding for a n ex tended pe riod, please note
the follow ing :
• T o co ns erve batte ry powe r, th e senso r will tu rn off a fter a few
days. When you come back, you will have to pull on the door handle
on ce to unlock the door an d then a second time to open the door.

Anti-theft alarm system
The anti-t heft al arm t rig g er s an ala rm if an yone

T he anti-theft alarm system triggers an a ud ible a larm and t urns on
th e e mergen cy fla sh er i f an u nau th oriz ed int erf eren ce wi th th e
veh icle is sensed by the system.
How is the anti-theft alarm system switched on?
T he anti-theft alarm system is switched on when you lock the veh icle.
Th e sy st em i s activ at ed app roxima te ly 30 secon ds a fter the ve hicle i s
loc ked. T he ind icator lights on top of t he dr iver's and front
pa ssenge r's door trim s ta rt fla shing rapidly fo r 30 s eco nds and t hen
blink s low ly. ._

How is the anti-theft alarm system switched off?
The anti-theft alarm system is switched off only when you unlock your
vehicle .
If you do not open a door within 60 seconds after you have
unlocked with the remote control, the vehicle will lock itself again
automatically.
When will the anti-theft alarm system be
triggered?
When the vehicle is locked, the alarm system monitors and protects
the following parts of the veh icle:
• engine compartment
• luggage compartment
• doors
• ignition
When the system is activated, the alarm will be triggered if one of the
doors, the engine hood or the rear lid are opened, or if the ignit ion is
turned on. The anti-theft alarm system will also go off when the
battery is disconnected.
Unlocking the rear lid by inserting and turning the key inside the rear
lid locking cylinder will trigger the optical and acoustic alarm.
You can also trigger the alarm by pressing the PANIC button on your remote control. This will alert other peop le in case of emergency.
Press the PANIC button again to turn off the alarm.
How is the anti-theft alarm switched off when
tr igg ered?
The alarm system is switched off when you un lock the vehicle or when
the ignition is switched on . The alarm will also switch itself off when
it comes to the end of its cycle .
Emergency flasher and horn
The emergency flasher will blink br iefly and the horn sounds when
the doors, engine hood and rear lid are properly closed .
If the emergency flashers do not blink, or the horn does not sound,
check the doors, engine hood and rear lid to make sure they are prop-

erly closed. If you close a door, the hood or the rear lid with the anti­
theft alarm switched on, the emergency flashers will blink and the
horn w ill sound only after you have closed the door or lid .
(I] Tips
For the anti-theft alarm system to function properly, make sure all
vehicle doors and windows are closed before leaving the vehicle. •
