- make sure that things that may increase the
weight of the child and child safety seat are
not being transported on the front passen
ger seat;
- make sure that the safety belt tension sen sor is not blocked . Shake the safety belt
latch on the front passenger seat back and
forth;
- If a strap or tether is bei ng used to tie the
child safety seat to t he front passenger
seat, make sure t hat it is no t so tight that it
ca uses the we ight -sensing mat to meas ure
more weight than is actua lly on the seat .
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light still

Important safety instructions on
monitoring the Advanced Airbag System
A WARNING
An a irbag system that is not functioning
p roperly cannot p rovide supplemental pro
tection in a frontal c rash.
- If the airbag ind icator light comes on, i t
means that there may be something
wrong with t he Advanced Airbag System.
It is poss ible that the ai rbag w ill inflate
when it is not supposed to, or will not in
f late when it sho uld .
- Have the airbag system inspected imme
d iate ly by yo ur Audi dealer.
A WARNING
If the front airbag inflates, a child without
a child restraint, in a rea rward-facing child
safety seat or in a forward-facing child re
straint that has not been properly installed
will be serious ly injured and can be killed.
- Even tho ugh your vehicle is equipped
with an Advanced A irbag System, make
certain that all children, espec ially 12
yea rs and younger, always ride properly
restrained fo r their age and size.
-

-If you must install a rearward facing
child safety seat on the front passenger
seat because of exceptional circumstan ces and the
PA SSE NGER AI R BAG OFF
light does not appear and stay on have
the a irbag system inspected by your Audi
dealer.
- A tight tether or other strap on a rear
ward-fac ing child restra int attached to
the front passenger seat can put too much pressure on the weight-sens ing
mat in the seat and register more weight
than is actually on the seat. The heavier
weight registered can make the system
work as though an adu lt were on the seat
and deploy the Advanced Airbag when it
must be suppressed caus ing serious or
even fatal injury to the child .
- If, in exceptional circ umstances, you
must install a forward-facing child re
st raint on the front passenger seat, a l
ways move the seat into its rearmost po
sit ion in the seat's fo re and aft adjust
ment range, as far away from the airb ag
as possib le . The backrest m ust be adjust
ed to an upright position. Make sure that
the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
comes on and stays on all the t ime when
ever the ignition is switched on.
A WARNING
- If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not go out when an adult is sitting
on the front passenger seat after taking
the steps described above, have the air
bag system inspected by your Aud i deal
er before transporting anyone on the
front passenger seat.
(Di Tips
If the weight-sensing mat in the front pas
senger seat detects an empty seat, the
front airbag on the pa ssenge r side will be
t urned off, and
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
w ill stay on .
Airbag system 12 1
Repair, care and disposal of the airbags
Parts of the airbag system are i nstalled at
many diffe rent p laces o n your Aud i. Insta llin g,
removing, servicing or repa iring a part in an
area of the vehicle can damage a part of an
airbag system and prevent that system from
working properly in a coll is ion.
T he re a re some important t hings you have to
know to make sure that the effectiveness o f
the system wi ll not be impaired and that dis
carded components do not cause injury or pol
lute the environment.
A WARNING
Improper care, serv ic ing and repair proce
dures can increase the risk of personal in
jury and death by preventing an a irbag
from deploying when needed or deploying
an a irbag unexpec tedly:
- Never cover, obst ruct, or change the
steer ing whee l horn pad or airbag cover
or the inst rument panel or mod ify them
in any w ay .
- Never attach any objects s uch as c up
holders or telephone mountings to the
surfaces covering the a irbag un its .
- For cleaning the horn pad or instr ument
panel, use only a soft, dry cloth or one
mo istened with pla in water. Solvents or
cleaners could damage the airbag cover
or change the st iffness or strength of the
material so that the airbag cannot de
ploy and protect properly.
- Never repair, adjust, or change any parts
of the a irbag system.
- All work on the steering wheel, instru
ment panel, front seats or e lectr ica l sys
tem (including the installation of audio
equ ipment, cellular telephones and CB
radios, etc.) must be performed by a
qualified technic ian who has the training
and specia l equipment necessary.
- For any work on the airbag system, we
strongly recommend that you see your
author ized Audi dealer or qualified work-
shop.
~

- Never modify t he front bumper or parts
of the veh icle body .
- Always make sure that the side airbag
can inflate without interference:
- Never install seat covers or replace
ment upholstery ove r the front seat
backs that have not been spec ifi cally
approved by A udi.
- Never use add itiona l seat cushions that
cover the areas whe re the side airbags
inflate .
- D amage to the o rigina l seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side air
bag module must always be repaired
immediately by an authorized Audi
dealer.
- The airbag system can be activated only once . Afte r an airbag has inf lated, it
must be replaced by an author ized Audi
dealer or qualified technic ian who has
the techn ica l information, tra ining and
special equipment necessary.
- The airbag system can be deployed only
once. After an a irbag has been deployed,
it must be replaced w ith new replace
ment parts designed and approved espe
cially for your Aud i model version. Re
placement of complete a irbag systems
or airbag componen ts must be per
formed by qualified workshops only .
Make sure that any airbag service act ion
is entered in your Audi Warranty
& Main
tenance booklet under
AIRBAG REPLACE
MENT RECORD.
-For safety reasons in severe accidents,
the a lternator and starter are separated
from the vehicle battery with a pyrotech
nic circuit interrupter.
- Work on the pyrotechnic cir cuit inter
rupter must on ly be performed by a
qua lified dealer - risk of an accident !
- If the vehicle or the c ircuit interrupter
is sc rapped, all applicable safety pre
cautions must be followed.

· Other things that can affect Advanced
Airbag performance
Chang ing the veh icle's suspens io n system can
change the way that the Advanced Airbag Sys
tem perfo rms in a c rash. For examp le, using
t ir e- rim combinat ions not approved by A udi ,
lower ing the veh icle, c hanging the st iffness of
the suspens ion, including the spr ings, suspen
sio n struts, shock absorbers etc . can change
the forces that ar e measured by the airbag
sensors and sent to the electronic contro l
unit. Some suspension changes can, for exam
ple, increase the force levels measured by the
senso rs and make the airbag system deploy in
c rashes in which it wou ld no t deploy if the
c h anges had not been made. Other kinds of
c h anges may reduce the fo rce leve ls meas
u red by the sensors and p reven t the airbag
from dep loying when it should.
A WARNING
Changing the vehicle's suspension includ
i ng use of unapproved tire-rim combina
tions can change Advanced Airbag per
fo rmance and increase the r isk of serious
personal injury in a crash .
- Never install suspension components
that do not have the same performance characterist ics as the components origi
na lly installed on your vehicle .
- Never use tire-rim combinations that
have no t been approved by Audi.

_& WARNING
Items stored between the safety belt
buckle and the center console can cause
the sensors in the buckle to send the
wrong informat ion to the electronic con
trol modu le and prevent the Advanced A ir
bag System from working properly.
- Always make sure that noth ing ca n inte r
fere w ith the safety belt buck les and that
t hey are not obstructed.
Knee airbags
Description of knee airbags
The knee airbag system can provide supple
mental protection to properly restrained
front seat occupants.
F ig . 11 4 Drive r's a irbag
The driver knee a irbag is in the instrument
panel underneath the steering whee l
~ fig. 114, the airbag for the passenger is at
about the same height in the i nstrument pan
e l underneath the g love compartment.
The knee airbag offers additiona l protection
to the driver's and passenger's knees and up
per and lower thigh areas and supp lements
the protect ion by the safety be lts .
I f the front airbags deploy, the knee airbags
a lso deploy i n frontal collisions when the de
p loyment threshold sto red in the cont ro l uni t

In addition to their normal safety function,
safety belts he lp keep the driver or front pas
senger in posit ion in a frontal coll is ion so that
A irba g sy stem 123
the ai rbags can provide supplemental protec
tion .
T he airbag system is no t a subs tit ute for your
sa fety be lt . Rather, it is part of the overall oc
cupant restraint system in your vehicle . A l
ways remember that the airbag system can
only he lp to protect you if you are wearing
your safety be lt and wearing it properly. This
is why you should always wear your safety
belt, not just because the law requires you to
do so
r::;, page 100, General notes .
Remember too, airbags will deploy on ly once
and only in certain kinds of accidents -your
safety belts are always there to offer protec
t ion in those accidents in wh ich airbags are
not supposed to dep loy o r when they have al
r eady deployed, for example when your vehi
cl e strikes or is struck by another after the
f irst collision.
This is just one of the reasons why an airbag is
not a s ubstitute fo r the safety be lt. The ai rbag
system works most effect ively when used with
the safety be lts. Therefore, always wear yo ur
sa fety belts correct ly .
It is impo rtant to remembe r that wh ile the
s u pplementa l knee airbag system is designed
to reduce the likelihood of ser ious inju ries,
other injur ies, for example, swelling, bru ising,
minor ab rasions and friction burns can a lso
occur when an airbag inflates.
The knee airbag system basically consists
of:
- The e lectronic control module
- Two in flatable ai rbags (a irbag and gas gen -
erator), one for the d river and one for the
front passenger
- The ai rbag indicator light in the instrument
panel
The knee airbag system will not deploy:
- when the ignit io n is t urned off
- in frontal collisions when the deceleration
meas ured by the control unit is too low
- in side co llisions
- in rear-end collisions
- in rollovers

.&_ WARNING
-Safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide protection when occupants
are in the proper seating position
¢page 117.
-If the airbag indicator light comes when
the vehicle is being used, have the sys
tem inspected immediately by your au
tho rized Aud i deale r.
How knee airbags work
The risk of injury to the leg area can be re
duced by fully inflated knee airbags.
F ig . 115 Inflated a irbags p rotecti ng in a fro ntal coll i
s ion
The knee airbag system has been designed so
that the airbags for the driver and front pas
senger deploy in certain but not all frontal
coll is ions.
If the front airbags deploy, the knee airbags
also deploy in frontal collisions when the de p loyment threshold stored in the control unit
i s met.
When the system dep loys, the airbags fill
with a propellant gas, and inflate between the lower part of the instrument panel and the
d river and the lower part of the instrument
panel and the front passenge r<=>
page 117,
fig. 112.
Although they are not a soft pillow, they can
"cush ion" the impact and in this way they can
he lp to reduce the r isk of injury to the lowe r
extremities. All o
f th is takes place in the b link o f an eye, so
fast that many peop le don't even realize that
the a irbags have deployed. The airbags a lso
inflate with a great deal of force and it is im
portant for occupant safety that nothing
shou ld be in their way when they deploy.
Fully inflated a irbags in combination with
proper ly worn safety belts s low down and lim
it the occupant's forward movement and help
to reduce the risk of injury .
Important safety instructions on the
knee airbag system
Airbags are only supplemental restraints . Al
ways wear safety belts correctly and ride in a
proper seating position.
The re is a lot that you and you r passenger
must know and do to he lp the safety belts and
airbags to prov ide s upplemen ta l pro te ct io n .
.&_ WARNING
An inflat ing knee a irbag c an cause se rious
in ju ry. Wea ring safety belts incorrectly and
improper seat ing positions increase the
risk of ser ious persona l injury and death
whenever a vehicle is being used.
- The knee airbag system cannot protect
you properly if you a re seated too close
to any of the airbag locat ions. When ad
justing their seat pos itions, it is impor
tant that bot h the driver and the front
passenger keep the ir upper bod ies and
knees at the following minimum safe
d istances:
- at least 10 inches (25 cm) between the
chest and the steering wheel/inst ru
ment panel.
- at least 4 inches (10 cm) between the
knees and the lower part of the instru
ment panel.
- The risk of personal inj ury increases if
you lean forward or to the s ide, or if the
seat is improperly positioned and you are
not wearing yo ur safety belt . The risk in
creases even more should the a irbag de
p loy .

-Always make sure that the knee airbag
can inflate without interference. Objects
between you and the airbag can increase
the risk of injury in an accident by inter
fering with the way the airbag deploys or by being pushed into you as the airbag
deploys.
- Never let anybody, especially children
or animals ride in the footwell in front
of the passenger seat.
If the airbag de
ploys, this can result in serious or fatal
injuries.
- Never carry objects of any kind in the
footwell area in front of the driver's or passenger's seat. Bulky objects (shop
ping bags, for example) can interfere
with or prevent proper deployment of
the airbag. Small objects can be
thrown through the vehicle if the air
bag deploys and injure you or your pas
sengers.
- Make sure there are no cracks, deep
scratches or other damage in the area of
the instrument panel where the knee air
bags are located.
- If children are incorrectly seated, their
risk of injury increases in a collision
Q page 129, Child Safety.
Side airbags
Description of side airbags
The airbag system can provide supplemental
protection to properly restrained front seat occupants.
Fig . 116 Side airbag location in the driver 's seat
The s ide airbags are located in the sides of the
front seat backrests
¢ fig. 116facing the
Airbag system 125
doors. They are identified by the word "AIR
BAG".
The side airbag system basically consists of:
- the electron ic control module and external
side impact sensors
- the two side airbags located in the sides of the front backrests
- the airbag warning light in the instrument
cluster.
The airbag system is monitored electronically
to make certain that it is functioni ng properly
at all times. Each time you turn on the igni
tion, the airbag system indicator light will
come on for a few seconds (self diagnostics).
The side airbag system supplements the safe
ty belts and can help to reduce the risk of in
jury to the driver's and front passenger's up
per torso on the s ide of the vehicle that is
struck in a side collision. The airbag deploys in
side impacts and only when the vehicle accel
eration registered by the control unit is high
enough. If this rate is below the reference val
ue programmed into the control unit, the side
airbags will not be triggered, even though the
car may be badly damaged as a result of the
collision . It is not possible to define an airbag
triggering range that will cover every possible
angle of impact, since the circumstances will
vary considerably between one collision and
another. Important factors include, for exam
ple, the nature (hard or soft) of the impacting
object, the angle of impact, vehicle speed,
etc.
¢ page 127, Important safety instruc
tions on the side airbag system .
Aside from their normal safety function, safe
ty belts work to help keep the driver or front
passenger in position in the event of a side
collision so that the side airbags can provide
protection.
The airbag system is
not a substitute for your
safety belt. Rather, it is part of the overall oc
cupant restraint system in your vehicle. Al
ways remember that the side airbag system
can only help to protect you if you are wearing
your safety belt and wearing it properly. This is another reason why you should always wear
IIJJ,

126 Airbag system
your safety belts, not just because the law re
quires you to do so¢
page 100, General
notes.
It is impor tant to remember that while the
supp lemental side airbag system is designed
to reduce the likelihood of serious injuries,
other injuries, for example, swelling, bruising,
and minor abrasions can also be associated
with deployed side airbags. Remember too,
side airbags will deploy only once and only in
certain k inds of acc idents -your safety belts
are a lways there to offer protect ion.
Vehicle damage, repair costs or even the lack
of vehicle damage are not necessari ly an indi
cation of over-sensit ive or failed airbag activa
tion . In some co llisions, both front and s ide
a irbags may inflate. Remember too, that air
bags will deploy only once and only in certa in
kinds of co llisions -your safety belts are al
ways there to offer protection in those acci
dents in which airbags are not supposed to
deploy or when they have already deployed.
The side airbag system will not depl oy:
- when the ign ition is turned off
- i n s ide collisions when the accelerat ion
measured by the sensor is too low
- i n rear-end collisions
- in rollovers.
In some types of accidents the front airbags
and side airbags may be triggered together.
A WARNING
-Safety belts and the a irbag system will
only prov ide protection when occupants
are in the p roper seating posit ion
~page 127.
-If the airbag indicator light comes on
when the veh icle is being used, have the
system inspected immediately by your
au thori zed Audi dealer. The a irbag may
not work properly when the vehicle ac
celeration in a side co llision is h igh
enough to activate the airbag.
-
How supplemental side airbags work
Side airbags deploy instantly and can help re
duce the risk of upper torso injuries for occu
pants who are properly restrained.
F ig . 1 17 Inflated side airbags on left side of veh icle
When the system is triggered, the airbag is
filled with propellant gas and breaks through a seam in the seat surface area marked "AIR
BAG".
It expands between the side trim panel
and the passenger. In order to help provide
th is additional protection, the side airbag
must inflate w ithin a fraction of a second at
very h igh speed and with great force. The sup
pleme nta l side airbag could injure you if your
seat ing pos it ion is not proper or upright or if
items are loca ted in the area where the s up
plementa l side airbag expands. This applies
especially to children¢
page 129, Child Safe
ty .
Supplemental side airbags inflate between
the occupant and the door panel on the side
of the vehicle that is struck in certain side col
lis ion ¢
fig. 117.
Although they are not a soft pillow, they can
"cushion" the impact and in this way they can
help to reduce the risk of injury to the upper
part of the body.
A fine dust may deve lop when the airbag de
ploys. This is normal and does not mean there
is a fire in the vehicle.

Important safety instructions on the
side airbag system
Airbags are only supplemental restraints. Al
ways properly wear safety belts and ride in a
proper seating position.
There is a lot that you and your passengers
must know and act accordingly to help the
safety belts and airbags do their job to pro
vide supplemental protection .
A WARNING
An inflating side airbag can cause serious
or fatal injury. Improperly wearing safety
belts and improper seating positions in
crease the risk of serious personal injury
and death whenever a vehicle is being
used .
- In order to reduce the risk of injury when
the supplemental side airbag inflates:
-Always sit in an upright position and
never lean against the area where the
supplemental side airbag is located.
- Never let a child or anyone else rest
their head against the side trim panel
in the area where the supplemental
side airbag inflates.
- Always make sure that safety belts are worn correctly,
- Do not let anyone sitting in the front
seat put their hand or any other parts
of their body out of the window.
- Always make sure that the side airbag can inflate without interference.
- Never install seat covers or replace
ment upholstery over the front seat backs that have not been specifically
approved by Audi.
- Never use additional seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side airbags
deploy.
- Damage to the original seat covers or
to the seam in the area of the side air bag module must always be repaired
immediately by an authorized Audi
dealer.
Airbag system 127
- Objects between you and the airbag can
increase the risk of injury in an accident
by interfering with the way the airbag
unfolds or by being pushed into you as
the airbag inflates.
- Never place or attach accessories or
other objects (such as cup holders, tel ephone brackets, or even large, bulky
objects) on the doors, over or near the
area marked "AIRBAG" on the seat backrests .
- Such objects and accessories can be come dangerous projectiles and cause injury when the supplemental side air
bag deploys.
- Never carry any objects or pets in the
deployment space between them and
the airbags or allow children or other passengers to travel in this position .
- Always prevent the side airbags from be
ing damaged by heavy objects knocking
against or hitting the sides of the seat backs.
- The airbag system can only be triggered
once . If the airbag has been triggered,
the system must be replaced by an au
thorized Audi dealership.
- Damage (cracks, deep scratches etc.) to
the original seat covers or to the seam in
the area of the side airbag module must
always be repaired immediately by an au
thorized Audi dealer.
- If children are seated improperly , their
risk of injury increases in the case of an
accident
c:> page 129, Child Safety.
