o L (Low gear): Use for driving up a very steep grade or for engine braking when descendingsteep hills. When downshifting to "L", the transmission will temporarily re- main in second gear until the vehiclehas slowed enough for low gear to engage. Do not exceed 50 km/h (31 mph) in low gear."L" engages 1st gear only. However, shift-up to 2nd is performed when the vehicle exceeds a certain speed, andas the speed increases, shift-up to 3rd gear occurs to prevent over-running the engine.

o D (Drive): Use for normal driving. The transmis- sion will automatically shift through afour-gear sequence, giving best economy and power. Never down-shift manually to "2" position or "L" positionwhen vehicle speed is more than 96 km/h (60 mph). D060F01P-GAT
o 2 (Second gear): Use for driving on slippery road, hill climbing or engine braking downhill."2" automatically shifts between 1st and 2nd gears. This means that no shift-up to 3rd gearis performed. However, the shift-up to 3rd gear is done when the vehicle speed exceeds a certain value to pre-vent the engine from over-running. Manually move the selector to "D" returning to normal driving condition. D060H02P-GAT
o P (Park): Use this range to park the vehicle. This range is also used when engine isstarted and warmed up.
o N (Neutral): The engine can be started in this range, but the use of P range is recommended for safer start up. NOTE:
o For smooth and safe operation,
depress the brake pedal when shifting from "N" position or "P"position to a forward or reverse gear.
o The brake pedal fully depressed in order to move the shift leverfrom the "P" position to any of the other positions.
o It is always possible to shift from "R", "N", "D", "2", "L" position to"P" position. The vehicle mustbe fully stopped to avoid trans- mission damage.

If you need to accelerate rapidly, press the accelerator pedal all the way to thefloor. The transmission will automati- cally shift to a lower gear, depending on the speed. NOTE: Turn the overdrive switch on for good fuel economy and smooth driving. If engine braking is neededin the "D" range or if repeated up- shifting and downshifting between the 3rd and 4th gear is needed whenclimbing a gentle slope, it is recom- mended that the overdrive switch be turned off. Turn the overdriveswitch back on immediately after- ward.
CAUTION:
o Shift into "R" and "P" only when the vehicle has completelystopped.
o Do not accelerate the engine in
the reverse or any of the forwardpositions with the brakes applied.
o Always apply the footbrake when
shifting from "P" or "N" to "R","D", "2" or "L" position.
o Do not use the "P" position in
place of the parking brake. Al-ways set the parking brake, shift the transmission into "P" and turn off the ignition when you leave the vehicle, even momen-tarily. Never leave the vehicle unat- tended while the engine is run-ning.
o Check the automatic transmis-
sion fluid level regularly, and addfluid as necessary. See the maintenance schedule for the proper fluid recommen-dation.
! D080A01P-GAT OVERDRIVE SWITCH (If installed) When the overdrive switch is turned on, the transmission will automatically upshift to the second, third and over- drive gears. When the overdrive switchis turned off, the transmission will not upshift to the overdrive gear at all. For normal driving, the selector levershould be left in the "D" position and the overdrive switch turned on. To move the selector lever, the push but-ton on the selector lever handle may have to be depressed first.HSR3039

13DRIVING WITH ELECTRONIC DUAL-RANGE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
D070A01P-GAT (If installed) The electronically controlled dual-range (Power/Normal) 4 speed automatic transmission is available for youHyundai. According to the road conditions, set the switch at the "NORMAL","POWER" or "HOLD" mode for normal driving, for greater power driving or for shift stage hold driving.Each time you press the switch, the "NORMAL", "POWER" and "HOLD" modes will switch alternately. The"POWER" and "HOLD" indicator in the instrument panel comes on or off. Normally, drive your vehicle in the "NORMAL" mode where the switch isnot pressed. (The "PWR" and "HOLD"indicators go out.) D070B01P-GAT "NORMAL" Mode The "N" (Normal) mode offers quiet and smooth auto-shifting with outstand-ing fuel economy. The "N" (Normal) mode is recommended for normal driv- ing. Set the driving pattern selectorswitch to the "N" (Normal) position. Push the selector lever to the "D" range and depress the accelerator pedal slowly. If you need rapid accel- eration, fully depress the acceleratorpedal.
HSRFL070 D070C01P-GAT "POWER" Mode In the "POWER" mode, you can obtain full potential of the engine for maxi-mum acceleration and driveability. The "POWER" mode is recommended for higher speeds than the "NORMAL"mode, driving in mountainous areas and for strong acceleration. Set the driving pattern selector switch to the"POWER" position.

o Never move the gear selector lever
from "P" or "N" to any other position with the accelerator pedal de- pressed.
o Never move the gear selector lever into "P" when the vehicle is in mo-tion.
o Be sure the vehicle is completely stopped before you attempt to shiftinto "R".
o Never take the vehicle out of gear and coast down a hill. This may beextremely hazardous. Always leave the vehicle in gear when moving.
o Do not "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and mal-function. Instead, when you are driv-ing down a long hill, slow down and shift to a lower gear. When you do this, engine braking will help slowthe car.
o Slow down before shifting to a lower
gear. Otherwise, the lower gear maynot be engaged.
D070D01P-GAT "HOLD" mode Select the "HOLD" mode when start- ing your vehicle on a road surfaceslippery from snow or the like, and the vehicle will start smoothly in second gear.When you need quick acceleration or engine braking power on a downhill grade, or when you are going to go upa long hill, press the "HOLD" switch once again to cancel the "HOLD" func- tion.
When "HOLD" button is depressed,"HOLD" indicator light in the instru-ment cluster will illuminate and auto- matic shifting will be performed in the range from 2nd gear to 3rd gear only,as shown in the table.

o Always use the parking brake. Do
not depend on placing the transmis- sion in "P" to keep the vehicle from moving.
o Exercise extreme caution when driv-
ing on a slippery surface. Be espe-cially careful when braking, acceler- ating or shifting gears.On a slippery surface, an abrupt change in engine speed can cause the drive wheels to lose traction andthe vehicle to go out of control.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the up-
grade with the accelerator pedal.This can cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or parking brake. CAUTION:
o The risk of rollover is greatly in- creased if you lose control of your vehicle at highway speeds.
o Loss of control often occurs if
two or more wheels drop off theroadway and the driver oversteers to reenter the roadway.
o In the event your vehicle leaves the roadway, do not steer sharply.Instead, slow down before pull-ing back into the travel lanes.
o In a collision crash, an unbelted
person is significantly more likely to die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
o Never exceed posted speed lim- its.

FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4WD)
D090A01P-GAT (Minibus) (If installed) You can send your engine power to all front and rear wheels for maximumpower. 4WD is useful when you drive in snow, mud, ice, mountainous or sandy areas where good traction isrequired, or when your wheels lose traction using two-wheel drive. D090A01P

Switch position
o 2H(Rear-wheel drive) When driving on normal roads and highway.
o 4H(High range 4-wheel drive) When driving deep snow, sand or rough roads with normal speed. The 4WD indication light "HI" will be turned on to remind you that you are in the 4Hmode.
o 4L(Low range 4-wheel drive) When driving up or descending steep slopes or rough roads such as muddyroad. Especially when increased drive power is required. The indication light "LO" will be turnedon to remind you that you are in the 4L mode. CAUTION:
Do not select 4WD mode on dry paved roads. Especially on dry high way, never select the 4WD(4H or 4L).Four-wheel driving on dry paved roads for a long period will increase the fuel consumption with possiblenoise generation and early tire wear. In addition, differential oil tempera- ture increases with possible driv-ing system part wear.
! D090B01P-GAT Manual vacuum type free wheel hubs (If installed) The hubs are set to either the "FREE" position or the "LOCK" position by turning the handle.
1. FREE -
This position is for rear wheel drive.
2. LOCK - This position is for four wheel drive.
Bring the vehicle to a complete stop, adjust the free wheel hubs to Lock (Free) position, and then resume driv- ing. And select transfer shift switch todesired mode. D090B01P

D090D02P-GAT Transfer shift switch operation By selecting the transfer shift switch(4H, 4L), the both axles of thevehicle are rigidly connected with each other. This improves the traction char- acteristics.
2H 4H
Select the 4H mode switch at speed below 60~70 km/h. It is not necessary to depress the clutch pedal (manualtransmission) or put the shift lever into "N" position (automatic transmission). Perform this operation when drivingstraight. 4H 2H
Select the 2H mode switch. This canbe done at any speed, and it is notnecessary to depress the clutch pedal (manual transmission) or put the shift lever into "N" position (automatic trans-mission). Perform this operation when driving straight.
CAUTION:
If four wheel drive is to be used, both the left and right free wheel hubs must be set to the "LOCK" position. Do not attempt to drivethe vehicle with the transfer shift switch is selected to either the "4H" or "4L" position if the free wheelhubs are in the "FREE" position. If the setting of the free wheel hubs is to be changed after extended use ofthe brake (such as for descending a long slope), allow them to cool first. The free wheel hubs can be becomeextremely hot and could cause se- vere burns.! D090C01P-GAT Auto vacuum type free wheel hubs (If installed) The auto vacuum type free wheel hub is designed to allow for automatic 4WDengagement when the transfer shift switch is selected to the 4H or 4L position.When engaging and disengaging, the auto vacuum type free wheel hubs will make a clicking noise. This is normal.

2. Depress the clutch pedal (manual transmission) or put the shift lever into "N" position (automatic trans- mission).
3. Select the 4L mode switch.
4L 2H
1. Stop the vehicle.(0 - 3km/h)
2. Depress the clutch pedal (manual transmission) or put the shift lever into "N" position (automatic trans- mission).
3. Select the 2H mode switch.
NOTE: If the transfer shift is switched into 2H mode, while the vehicle is mak- ing a sharp turn or performingabrupt maneuver, the 4H indicator light in the instrument panel will turn off.However, the vehicle will still be in 4H mode. This condition is normal. When the vehicle returns to normaldriving condition, the 4WD system will automatically transfer to the 2H mode.
4H 4L or 4L 4H
1. Stop the vehicle.(0-3km/h)
2. Depress the clutch pedal (manual transmission) or put the shift lever into "N" position (automatic trans- mission).
3. Select the 4H or 4L mode switch.D090E01P-GAT Driving Four-wheel drive safely
o The driving posture should be more
upright and closer to the wheel than usual; adjust the seat to a good position for easy steering and pedal operation.
o Be sure to wear the seat belt.
o Drive carefully when off the road
and avoid dangerous areas.
o 4WD has higher ground clearance and a narrower track to make them capable of performing in a widevariety of off road applications. Spe- cific design characteristics give them a higher center of gravity than ordi-nary cars. An advantage of the higher ground clearance is a better view of the road allowing you to anticipateproblems. They are not designed for cornering at the same speeds as conventional 2-wheel drive vehiclesany more than low-slung sports cars are designed to perform satisfacto- rily under off-road conditions. If at allpossible, avoid sharp turns or abrupt maneuvers. As with other vehicles of this type, failure to operate thisvehicle correctly may result in loss of control or vehicle rollover.

19BRAKE SYSTEM
D150A01P-GAT All the parts of the brake system are critical to safety. Have the vehicle ser- viced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer at regular intervals according tothe service standards.
(1) The service brake is divided into two brake circuits so that when one brake circuit fails, the other is avail- able to stop the vehicle. If this oc-curs, however, the brake pedal must be depressed further than usual; stop driving as soon as possibleand have the brake system ser- viced at the nearest authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
(2) Do not place a thick floor mat around the brake pedal; doing so couldprevent the full pedal stroke thatwould be necessary in an emer- gency. Make sure that the pedal can be operated freely at all times.
(3) If the vehicle is equipped with a brake warning lamp, the lamp willlight up if the brake fluid level isabnormally low.
o Do not grip the inside or spokes of
the steering wheel when driving off-road. The steering wheel could jerk and injure your hands. Always firmly hold the outer steering wheel whenyou are driving off-road.
o Drive at lower speeds in strong
crosswinds. Because of yourvehicle’s high center of gravity, its stability will be affected in cross- winds. Slower speeds ensure bettervehicle control.
o Whenever you drive off-road through
sand, mud or water as deep as thewheel hub, more frequent mainte- nance may be required.
o Do not drive in water if the level is higher than the bottom of the wheelhubs.
o Check your brake condition once you are out of mud or water. Pressthe brake several times as you move slowly until your feel normal brakingforces return.
o Four-wheel driving on flat and nor-
mal roads can result in a severebinding condition when turning the steering wheel. Driving on dry paved road and highway Select 2H(2WD) to drive on dry paved roads. Especially on dry highway, neverselect the 4H or 4L(4WD). Driving on snowy or icy roads Select the 4H or 4L in accordance with the road conditions, and then gradu- ally depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Driving on sandy or muddy roads Select the 4H or 4L and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Keep the pressure on the accelerator pedal constant as pos-sible, and drive at low speed. Climbing sharp grades Select the 4L to maximize use the engine torque. Descending sharp grades Select 4L, use the engine brake and descend slowly.

(4) If the vehicle is equipped with a
brake booster, the brake boosting force is lost after the brake pedal is depressed once or twice while the engine is off. If this occurs, thebrake will require greater force than usual. This is especially important whenthe vehicle is being towed. A film of water can form on thebrake discs or brake drums andprevent normal functioning after driving in heavy rain or through large puddles, or after the vehicle iswashed. If this occurs, repeatedly tap the brake pedal lightly while driving to dry out the brakes.
(6) It is important to take advantage of the braking power of the engine byshifting to a lower gear while drivingon steep downhill roads in order to prevent the brakes from overheat- ing.
(7) Periodically confirm that the brake warning lamp functions properly.
(8) With new brake linings, if possible, avoid applying the brakes fully dur- ing the first 200 km (124 miles) of driving.

(5) Check the brake system while driv- ing at a low speed immediately after starting, especially when the brakes are wet, to confirm that itworks normally. D120A01P-GAT PARKING BRAKE To park the vehicle, first bring it to a complete stop, fully engage the park-ing brake, and then set the gearshift lever at 1st or reverse. Move the trans- fer shift lever to any position.
1. To apply, pull the lever up without
pushing the button at the end of hand grip.
2. To release, pull the lever slightly,
