changed at the intervals specified in
the maintenance schedule. If the car
is being driven in severe conditions,
more frequent oil and filter changes
are required.Drive beltsInspect all drive belts for evidence of
cuts, cracks, excessive wear or oil
saturation and replace if necessary.
Drive belts should be checked peri-
odically for proper tension and
adjusted as necessary.When you are inspecting the belt,
place the ignition switch in the
LOCK/OFF or ACC position.
Fuel filterA clogged filter can limit the speed at
which the vehicle may be driven,
damage the emission system and
cause multiple issues such as hard
starting. If an excessive amount of
foreign matter accumulates in the
fuel tank, the filter may require
replacement more frequently.
After installing a new filter, run the
engine for several minutes, and
check for leaks at the connections.
We recommend that the fuel filter be
replaced by an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer.
Fuel lines, fuel hoses and con-
nectionsCheck the fuel lines, fuel hoses and

Never work on injection system
with engine running or within 30
seconds after shutting off engine.
High pressure pump, rail, injectors
and high pressure pipes are sub-
ject to high pressure even a fter
the engine stopped. The fuel jet
produced by fuel leaks may cause
serious injury, if it touch the b ody.
People using pacemakers should
not move than 30cm closer to the
ECU or wiring harness within the
eng ine room while engine is run-
ning, since the high currents in the
Common Rail system produce
considerab le magnetic fields.

PParking brakeInspect the parking brake system
including the parking brake pedal
and cables. Brake discs, pads, calipers and
rotorsCheck the pads for excessive wear,
discs for run out and wear, and
calipers for fluid leakage.Suspension mounting boltsCheck the suspension connections
for looseness or damage. Retighten
to the specified torque.
Steering gear box, linkage &
boots/lower arm ball joint
With the vehicle stopped and engine
off, check for excessive free-play in
the steering wheel.
Check the linkage for bends or dam-
age. Check the dust boots and ball
joints for deterioration, cracks, or damage. Replace any damaged
parts.
Drive shafts and bootsCheck the drive shafts, boots and
clamps for cracks, deterioration, or
damage. Replace any damaged
parts and, if necessary, repack the
grease.Air conditioning refrigerant
(if equipped)Check the air conditioning lines and
connections for leakage and dam-
age.

(Petrol engiene)1.Be sure the vehicle is on level
ground.
2.Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating tempera-
ture.
3.Turn the engine off and wait for a few minutes (about 5 minutes) for
the oil to return to the oil pan.
4.Pull the dipstick out, wipe it clean, and reinsert it fully.
5.Pull the dipstick out again and check the level. The level should be
between F (Full) and L (Low). If it is near or at L (Low), add enough
oil to bring the level to F (Full).
Do not
overfill.
Use a funnel to help prevent oil from
being spilled on engine components.
Use only the specified engine oil. (Refer to "Recommended lubricantsand capacities" in chapter 8.)
Radiator hose
Be very careful not to touch the
radiator hose when checking or
adding the engine oil as i t may be
hot enough to burn you.

Do not overfill the engine oil. It
may damage the engine.

Do not spill engine oil, when
adding or changing engine oil. If
you drop the engine oil on the
engine ro om, wipe it off immedi-
ately.
•
When you wipe the oil level
gauge, you should wipe it with a
clean cloth. When mixed with
debris, it can cause engine dam-
age.

#!$$Draining water from fuel filterThe fuel filter for diesel engine plays
an important role of separating water
from fuel and accumulating the water
in its bottom.
If water accumulates in the fuel filter,
the warning light comes on when the
ignition switch is in the ON position.
If this warning light turned
on, we recommend that
the system be serviced by
an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer.If the water accumulated in the fuel
filter is not drained at proper times,
damages to the major parts such as
the fuel system can be caused by water permeation in the fuel filter.
Extracting air from the fuel filterIf you drive until you have no fuel left
or if you replace the fuel filter, be
sure to extract air from the fuel sys-
tem as it makes it difficult to start the
engine.
1. Pump up and down(1) approxi- mately 50 times until the pump is
hard.
2. Extract air from the fuel filter by removing the bolt(2) with a cross-
tip screw driver and reinstall the
bolt(2).
3. Pump up and down(1) approxi- mately 15 times.
4. Extract air from the fuel filter by removing the bolt(2) with a cross-
tip screw driver and reinstall the
bolt(2).
5. Pump up and down(1) approxi- mately 5 times.
Information
Use cloths when you extract air sothat the fuel is not sprayed around.
Clean the fuel around the fuel filter or the injection pump before start-
ing the engine to prevent fire.
Finally, check each part if the fuel is leaking.i

Disconnect the battery charger
in the following order.
1.Turn off the battery charger main switch.
2.Unho ok the negative clamp from
the negative battery terminal.
3.Unhook the positive clamp from the positive battery terminal.

Before performing maintenance
or recharging the battery, turn
off all accessories and stop the
engine.
•
The negative battery cable must
be removed first and installed
last when the battery is discon-
nected.

Recharging battery
When recharging the battery,
observe the following precautions:•
The battery must be removed
from the vehicle and placed in
an area with good ventilation.
•
Do not allow cigarettes, sparks,
or flame near the battery.
•
Watch the battery during charg-
ing, and stop or reduce the
charging rate if the battery cells
begin gas sing (boiling) violently
or if the temperature of the elec-
trolyte of any cell exceeds 49°C
(120°F).
•
Wear eye protection when
checking the battery during
charging.

A vehicle’s electrical system is pro-
tected from electrical overload dam-
age by fuses.
This vehicle has 2 fuse panels, one
located in the driver’s side panel bol-
ster, the other in the engine compart-
ment near the battery.
If any of your vehicle’s lights, acces-
sories, or controls do not work, check
the appropriate circuit fuse. If a fuse
has blown, the element inside the
fuse will be melted.
If the electrical system does not
work, first check the driver’s side
fuse panel.
Before replacing a blown fuse, dis-
connect the negative battery cable.
Always replace a blown fuse with
one of the same rating.
If the replacement fuse blows, this
indicates an electrical problem. Avoid
using the system involved and imme-
diately consult an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer.Three kinds of fuses are used: blade type for lower amperage rating, slowblow type and multi fuse for higheramperage ratings.
Do not use a screwdriver or any
other metal object to remove fuses
because it may cause a short circuit
and damage the system.

If it fits loosely, we recommend that

If you do not have a spare, use a fuse of the same rating from a circuityou may not need for operating thevehicle, such as the cigarette lighterfuse.If the electrical components do not
work and the fuses are OK, check
the fuse panel in the engine com-
partment. If a fuse is blown, it must
be replaced.
MMemory fuse Your vehicle is equipped with the
memory fuse to prevent battery dis-
charge if your vehicle is parked with-
out being operated for prolonged
periods. Use the following proce-
dures before parking the vehicle for
prolonged periods.
1. Turn off the engine.
2. Turn off the headlights and tail lights.
3. Open the driver's side panel cover and pull up the memory fuse.

IInformation
If the memory fuse is pulled up from
the fuse panel, the warning chime,
audio, clock and interior lamps, etc.,
will not operate. Some items must
be reset after replacement. Refer to
"Battery" in this chapter.
Even though the memory fuse is pulled up, the battery can still be
discharged by operation of the
headlights or other electrical
devices.
Engine compartment panel fuse
replacement1. Turn the ignition switch and all
other switches off.
2. Remove the fuse box cover by pressing the tab and pulling up the
cover.
3. Check the removed fuse; replace it if it is blown. To remove or insert
the fuse, use the fuse puller in the
engine compartment fuse panel.
4. Push in a new fuse of the same rating, and make sure it fits tightly
in the clips. If it fits loosely, we rec-
ommend that you consult an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
After checking the fuse panel in the
engine compartment, securely install
the fuse panel cover. If not, electrical
failures may occur from water leak-

systemThe Exhaust Emission Control
System is a highly effective system
which controls exhaust emissions
while maintaining good vehicle per-
formance.Vehicle modifications • This vehicle should not be modi-
fied. Modification of your vehicle
could affect its performance, safety
or durability and may even violate
governmental safety and emis-
sions regulations.
In addition, damage or perform-
ance problems resulting from any
modification may not be covered
under warranty.
• If you use unauthorized electronic devices, it may cause the vehicle to
operate abnormally, wire damage,
battery discharge and fire. For your
safety, do not use unauthorized
electronic devices.
Engine exhaust gas precautions(carbon monoxide) • Carbon monoxide can be present
with other exhaust fumes.
Therefore, if you smell exhaust
fumes of any kind inside your vehi-
cle, have it inspected and repaired
immediately. If you ever suspect
exhaust fumes are coming into
your vehicle, drive it only with all
the windows fully open. Have your
vehicle checked and repaired
immediately. • Do not operate the engine in con-
fined or closed areas (such as
garages) any more than what is
necessary to move the vehicle in or
out of the area.
• When the vehicle is stopped in an open area for more than a short
time with the engine running,
adjust the ventilation system (as
needed) to draw outside air into the
vehicle.
• Never sit in a parked or stopped vehicle for any extended time with
the engine running.
• When the engine stalls or fails to start, excessive attempts to restart
the engine may cause damage to
the emission control system.Exhaust
Engine exhaust gases contain
carbon monoxide (CO). Though
colorless and odorless, it is dan-
gero us and could be lethal if
inhaled. Follow the instructions on
