CAUTION:
When replacing or cleaning refrigerant cycle components, observe the following.
IWhen the compressor is removed, store it in the same position as it is when mounted on the car.
Failure to do so will cause lubricant to enter the low pressure chamber.
IWhen connecting tubes, always use a torque wrench and a back-up wrench.
IAfter disconnecting tubes, immediately plug all openings to prevent entry of dirt and moisture.
IWhen installing an air conditioner in the vehicle, connect the pipes as the final stage of the opera-
tion. Do not remove the seal caps of pipes and other components until just before required for
connection.
IAllow components stored in cool areas to warm to working area temperature before removing seal
caps. This prevents condensation from forming inside A/C components.
IThoroughly remove moisture from the refrigeration system before charging the refrigerant.
IAlways replace used O-rings.
IWhen connecting tube, apply lubricant to circle of the O-rings shown in illustration. Be careful not
to apply lubricant to threaded portion.
Lubricant name: Nissan A/C System Oil Type S
Part number: KLH00-PAGS0
IO-ring must be closely attached to dented portion of tube.
IWhen replacing the O-ring, be careful not to damage O-ring and tube.
IConnect tube until you hear it click, then tighten the nut or bolt by hand until snug. Make sure that
the O-ring is installed to tube correctly.
IAfter connecting line, conduct leak test and make sure that there is no leakage from connections.
When the gas leaking point is found, disconnect that line and replace the O-ring. Then tighten
connections of seal seat to the specified torque.

Precautions for Servicing CompressorNBHA0005IPlug all openings to prevent moisture and foreign matter from entering.
IWhen the compressor is removed, store it in the same position as it is when mounted on the car.
IWhen replacing or repairing compressor, follow ªMaintenance of Lubricant Quantity in Compres-
sorº exactly. Refer to HA-146.
IKeep friction surfaces between clutch and pulley clean. If the surface is contaminated, with
lubricant, wipe it off by using a clean waste cloth moistened with thinner.
IAfter compressor service operation, turn the compressor shaft by hand more than five turns in
both directions. This will equally distribute lubricant inside the compressor. After the compressor
is installed, let the engine idle and operate the compressor for one hour.
IAfter replacing the compressor magnet clutch, apply voltage to the new one and check for normal
operation.

2. Install water pump.
IDo not allow cylinder block to nip O-rings when installing
water pump.

3. Before installing, remove all traces of liquid gasket from mat-
ing surface of water pump cover and chain tensioner cover
using a scraper.
Also remove traces of liquid gasket from mating surface of
front cover.

4. Apply a continuous bead of liquid gasket to mating surface of
chain tensioner cover and water pump cover.

5. Return the crankshaft pulley to its original position by turning
it 20É forward.

6. Install timing chain tensioner, then remove the stopper pin.
IWhen installing the timing chain tensioner, engine oil
should be applied to the oil hole and tensioner.
IAfter starting engine, let idle for three minutes, then rev
engine up to 3,000 rpm under no load to purge air from the
high-pressure chamber of the chain tensioners. The
engine may produce a rattling noise. This indicates that
air still remains in the chamber and is not a matter of
concern.
7. Reinstall any parts removed in reverse order of removal.

ÐREFILLING ENGINE COOLANTÐNBMA0011S021. Install reservoir tank, radiator drain plug, and cylinder block
drain plugs.
IApply sealant to the thread of cylinder block drain plugs.
:8-11N´m(0.8 - 1.2 kg-m, 70 - 104 in-lb) Front side
: 18 - 21 N´m (1.8 - 2.2 kg-m, 13 - 15 ft-lb) Right side
2. Fill coolant up to the top of the radiator mouth. While filling,
tighten each air bleeding plug from where coolant overflows.
Fill in the coolant again up to top of the mouth.
3. Reservoir tank with coolant up to the MAX level and install
radiator cap.
Air relief plugs:
: 6.7 - 7.9 N´m (0.68 - 0.81 kg-m, 59 - 70 in-lb)
Use Geniune Nissan anti-freeze coolant or equivalent mixed
with demineralized water/distilled water.
For coolant mixture ratio, refer to ªRECOMMENDED FLUIDS AND
LUBRICANTSº, MA-11.
Coolant capacity (Without reservoir tank):
8.6(9-1/8 US qt, 7-5/8 Imp qt)

Reservoir tank capacity (for MAX level):
0.6(5/8 US qt, 1/2 Imp qt)
Pour coolant through coolant filler neck slowly to allow air in
system to escape.
4. Warm up engine to normal operating temperature.
5. Run engine at 3,000 rpm for 10 seconds and return to idle
speed.
IRepeat 2 or 3 times.
Watch coolant temperature gauge so as not to overheat the
engine.
6. Stop engine and cool it down.
ICool down using a fan to reduce the time.
7. Remove the radiator filler cap and check coolant level.
IIf necessary, refill radiator up to filler neck with coolant.
8. Refill reservoir tank to Max line with coolant.
9. Repeat steps 4 through step 8 two or more times.
10. Warm up engine, and check for sound of coolant flow while
running engine from idle up to 3,000 rpm with heater tempera-
ture control set at several positions between COOL and HOT.
ISound may be noticeable at heater water cock.
11. If sound is heard, bleed air from cooling system by repeating

9. Press ªENTERº to continue.

10. Raise and hold the engine speed at 1,500 to 2,000 rpm for
about 5 seconds, then return the engine to idle. Once the
increase in engine rpm is detected, press ªENTERº to con-
tinue.
NOTE:
If after 30 seconds an increase in engine idle speed is not detected,
ªRPM NOT DETECTEDº will be displayed. Press ªENTERº to
restart the test.

11. Diagnostic result is displayed on the tester. Refer to ªDIAG-
NOSTIC RESULT ITEM CHARTº, SC-23.

12. Press ªENTERº then test output code is displayed. Record the
test output code on the repair order.
13. Toggle back to the ªDIAGNOSTIC SCREENº for test results.

CAUTION:
Do not hold the steering wheel in a locked position for more
than 15 seconds.
4. If fluid leakage at connectors is noticed, loosen flare nut and
then retighten.
Do not overtighten connector as this can damage O-ring,
washer and connector.
5. Check rack boots for accumulation of power steering fluid.
Bleeding Hydraulic SystemNBST00131. Raise front end of vehicle until wheels are clear of the ground.
2. Add fluid into oil tank to specified level. Then, quickly turn
steering wheel fully to right and left and lightly touch steering
stoppers.
Repeat steering wheel operation until fluid level no longer
decreases.
3. Start engine.
Repeat step 2 above.
IIncomplete air bleeding will cause the following to occur. When
this happens, bleed air again.
a) Air bubbles in reservoir tank
b) Clicking noise in oil pump
c) Excessive buzzing in oil pump
Fluid noise may occur in the valve or oil pump. This is common
when the vehicle is stationary or while turning steering wheel
slowly. This does not affect performance or durability of the system.

Checking Steering Wheel Turning ForceNBST00141. Park vehicle on a level, dry surface and set parking brake.
2. Start engine.
3. Bring power steering fluid up to adequate operating tempera-
ture. [Make sure temperature of fluid is approximately 60 to
80ÉC (140 to 176ÉF).]
Tires need to be inflated to normal pressure.
4. Check steering wheel turning force when steering wheel has
been turned 360É from the neutral position.
Steering wheel turning force:
39 N (4 kg, 9 lb) or less
5. If steering wheel turning force is out of specification, check
rack sliding force.
a. Disconnect steering column lower joint and knuckle arms from
the gear.
b. Start and run engine at idle to make sure steering fluid has
reached normal operating temperature.
c. Pull tie-rod slowly to move it from neutral position to±11.5 mm
(±0.453 in) at speed of 3.5 mm (0.138 in)/s. Check that rack
sliding force is within specification.
Rack sliding force:
137 - 255 N (14 - 26 kg, 31 - 57 lb)

6. If rack sliding force is not within specification, overhaul steer-
ing gear assembly.
7. If rack sliding force is OK, inspect steering column. Refer to
ªInspectionº, ªSTEERING WHEEL AND STEERING
COLUMNº, ST-14.

Checking Hydraulic SystemNBST0015Before starting, check belt tension, driving pulley and tire pressure.
1. Set Tool. Open shut-off valve. Then bleed air.
Refer to ªBleeding Hydraulic Systemº, ST-9.
2. Run engine, at idle speed or 1,000 rpm.
Make sure fluid temperature in reservoir tank rises to 60 to
80ÉC (140 to 176ÉF).
WARNING:
Warm up engine with shut-off valve fully opened. If engine is
started with shut-off valve closed, fluid pressure in the power
steering pump increase to maximum. This will raise fluid tem-
perature abnormally.
3. Check pressure with steering wheel fully turned to left and right
positions with engine idling at 1,000 rpm.
CAUTION:
Do not hold the steering wheel in a locked position for more
than 15 seconds.
Power steering pump maximum operating pressure:
8,630 - 9,219 kPa
(88 - 94 kg/cm
2, 1,251 - 1,337 psi)
IIf pressure reaches maximum operating pressure, system is
OK.
IIf pressure increases above maximum operating pressure,
check power steering pump flow control valve. Refer to ST-28.
4. If power steering pressure is below the maximum operating
pressure, slowly close shut-off valve and check pressure
again.
CAUTION:
Do not close shut-off valve for more than 15 seconds.
IIf pressure increases to maximum operating pressure, gear
should be damaged. Refer to ªRemoval and Installationº,
ST-18.
IIf pressure remains below maximum operating pressure, pump
should be damaged. Refer to ªDisassemblyº, ST-28.
5. After checking hydraulic system, remove Tool and add fluid as
necessary. Then completely bleed air out of system. Refer to
ST-9.

6. Move rack over its entire stroke several times.
7. Measure pinion rotating torque within the range of 180É from
neutral position.
Stop the gear at the point of maximum torque.
8. Loosen adjusting screw, then retighten it to 4.9 to 5.9 N´m (50
to 60 kg-cm, 43 to 52 in-lb).
9. Loosen adjusting screw by 10É to 20É.

10. Prevent adjusting screw from turning, and tighten lock nut to
specified torque.

11. Measure pinion rotating torque.
Lock to lock:
Average rotating torque
0.78 - 1.47 N´m (8.0 - 15.0 kg-cm, 6.9 - 13.0 in-lb)
Within±100É from the neutral position:
Maximum torque variation
0.4 N´m (4 kg-cm, 3.5 in-lb)
Outside the above range:
Maximum force variation
0.6 N´m (6 kg-cm, 5.2 in-lb)
IIf pinion rotating torque is not within specifications, readjust it
starting from step 4. If pinion rotating torque is still out of
specifications after readjustment, replace steering gear
assembly.

12. Check rack sliding force on vehicle as follows:
a. Install steering gear onto vehicle, but do not connect tie-rod to
knuckle arm.
b. Connect all piping and fill with steering fluid.
c. Start engine and bleed air completely.
d. Disconnect steering column lower joint from the gear.
e. Keep engine at idle and make sure steering fluid has reached
normal operating temperature.
f. Pull tie-rod slowly to move it from neutral position to±11.5 mm
(±0.453 in) at speed of 3.5 mm (0.138 in)/s. Check that rack
sliding force is within specification.
