To store the spare tire:
1. Lay the tire on the ground with the
valve stem facing up.
2. Place the wheel under the vehicle and install the retainer (1) through
the wheel center.
3. Turn the wrench clockwise until it clicks. Changing tires

3. Activate the hazard warning flasher.

properly aligned with the center
of the spare tire to prevent the
spare tire from “rattling”.
Otherwise, it may cause the spare tire to fall off the carrierand lead to an accident.

from the vehicle.
5. Block both the front and rear of wheel that is diagonally opposite
the jack position. 6. Loosen the wheel lug nuts coun-
terclockwise one turn each, but do
not remove any nut until the tire
has been raised off the ground.

WARNING - Changing a tire
To prevent vehicle movement
while changing a tire, always
set the parking brake fully,
and always block the wheel
diagonally opposite the wheel
being changed.
We recommend that the wheels of the vehicle be
chocked, and that no person
remain in a vehicle that is
being jacked.

7. Place the jack at the front(1) or
rear(2) jacking position closest to
the tire you are changing. Place
the jack at the designated loca-
tions under the frame. The jacking
positions are plates welded to the
frame with two tabs and a raised
dot to index with the jack. 8. Insert the jack handle into the jack
and turn it clockwise, raising the
vehicle until the tire just clears the
ground. This measurement is
approximately 30 mm (1.2 in).
Before removing the wheel lug
nuts, make sure the vehicle is sta-
ble and that there is no chance for
movement or slippage.
WARNING - Jack location
To reduce the possibility of
injury, be sure to use only the
jack provided with the vehicle
and in the correct jack position;
never use any other part of the
vehicle for jack support.

9. Loosen the wheel nuts andremove them with your fingers. Slide the wheel off the studs and
lay it flat so it cannot roll away. To
put the wheel on the hub, pick up
the spare tire, line up the holeswith the studs and slide the wheelonto them.
If this is difficult, tip the wheelslightly and get the top hole in thewheel lined up with the top stud.
Then jiggle the wheel back and
forth until the wheel can be slid
over the other studs. 10. To reinstall the wheel, hold it on
the studs, put the wheel nuts onthe studs and tighten them finger
tight. Jiggle the tire to be sure it iscompletely seated, then tighten
the nuts as much as possible
with your fingers again.
11. Lower the vehicle to the ground by turning the wheel nut wrench
counterclockwise.
WARNING
Wheels may have sharp edges.
Handle them carefully to avoid
possible severe injury. Before
putting the wheel into place, besure that there is nothing on the
hub or wheel (such as mud, tar,
gravel, etc.) that interferes with
the wheel from fitting solidly
against the hub.
If there is, remove it. If there is not good contact on the mount-ing surface between the wheel
and hub, the wheel nuts couldcome loose and cause the loss
of a wheel. Loss of a wheel may
result in loss of control of the
vehicle. This may cause serious
injury or death.

To prevent the jack, jack handle,
wheel lug nut wrench and spare tire
from rattling while the vehicle is in
motion, store them properly.
Important - use of compact sparetire (if equipped)
Your vehicle is equipped with a com-
pact spare tire. This compact spare
tire takes up less space than a regu-
lar-size tire. This tire is smaller than a
conventional tire and is designed for
temporary use only.
The compact spare should be inflat-
ed to 420 kPa (60 psi).
✽✽NOTICE
Check the inflation pressure after
installing the spare tire. Adjust it to
the specified pressure, as necessary.
CAUTION
You should drive carefully when the compact spare is inuse. The compact spareshould be replaced by theproper conventional tire and rim at the first opportunity.
The operation of this vehicle is not recommended withmore than one compact sparetire in use at the same time.
WARNING - Wheel studs
If the studs are damaged, they
may lose their ability to retain
the wheel. This could lead to theloss of the wheel and a collisionresulting in serious injuries.
WARNING - Inadequate
spare tire pressure
Check the inflation pressures
as soon as possible after
installing the spare tire. Adjust
it to the specified pressure, if
necessary. Refer to “Tires and
wheels” in chapter 9.
WARNING
The compact spare tire is for
emergency use only. Do not
operate your vehicle on thiscompact spare at the speed
over 80 km/h (50 mph). The orig-inal tire should be repaired or
replaced as soon as possible to
avoid failure of the spare possi-
bly leading to personal injury ordeath.

If towing service is not available in an
emergency, your vehicle may be
temporarily towed using a cable or
chain secured to the emergency tow-ing hook under the front (or rear) of
the vehicle. Use extreme caution
when towing the vehicle. A driver
must be in the vehicle to steer it and
operate the brakes.
Towing in this manner may be done
only on hard-surfaced roads for a
short distance and at low speed.
Also, the wheels, axles, power train,
steering and brakes must all be ingood condition.
Do not use the tow hooks to pull avehicle out of mud, sand or other
conditions from which the vehicle
cannot be driven out under its own
power.
Avoid towing a vehicle heavier than the vehicle doing the towing.
The drivers of both vehicles should communicate with each other fre-
quently. Before emergency towing, check if
the hook is not broken or dam-aged.
Fasten the towing cable or chain securely to the hook.
Do not jerk the hook. Apply it steadily and with even force.
To avoid damaging the hook, do not pull from the side or at a verti-
cal angle. Always pull straightahead.CAUTION
Attach a towing strap to the
tow hook.
Using a portion of the vehicle other than the tow hooks fortowing may damage the bodyof your vehicle.
Use only a cable or chain specifically intended for usein towing vehicles. Securely fasten the cable or chain tothe towing hook provided.
WARNING
Use extreme caution when tow-
ing the vehicle.
Avoid sudden starts or erratic driving maneuvers which
would place excessive stress
on the emergency towing hook
and towing cable or chain. The
hook and towing cable or
chain may break and cause
serious injury or damage.
If the disabled vehicle is unable to be moved, do not
forcibly continue the towing.
We recommend that you con-
tact an authorized Kia dealer
or a commercial tow truck
service for assistance.
Tow the vehicle as straight ahead as possible.
Keep away from the vehicle during towing.

Do not use the hooks under the
rear of the vehicle for towing
purposes. These hooks are
designed ONLY for transport
tie-down. If the tie-down hooks
are used for towing, the tie-
down hooks or rear bumper will
be damaged and this could lead
to serious injury.

Engine compartment precau- tions (Diesel engine)
• The piezo injector operates at high
voltage (maximum 200v). Therefore,
the following accidents may occur.
- Direct contact with the injector orinjector wiring may cause electric
shock or damage your muscle or
nerve system.
- The electromagnetic wave from the operating injector may cause
the artificial heart pacemaker tomalfunction.
Follow the safety tips provided below, when you are checking theengine room while the engine is
running.
- Do not touch the injector, injectorwirings, and the engine computer
while the engine is running.
- Do not remove the injector con- nector while the engine is running.
- People using pacemakers must not go near the engine while the
engine is starting or running.WARNING - Maintenance
work
Performing maintenance work on a vehicle can be danger-
ous. You can be seriously
injured while performing some
maintenance procedures. If
you lack sufficient knowledge
and experience or the propertools and equipment to do the
work, we recommend that the
system be servied by an
authorized Kia dealer.
Working under the hood with the engine running is danger-
ous. It becomes even more
dangerous when you wear jew-
elry or loose clothing. These
can become entangled in mov-
ing parts and result in injury.
Therefore, if you must run the
engine while working under the
hood, make certain that you
remove all jewelry (especially
rings, bracelets, watches, and
necklaces) and all neckties,
scarves, and similar loose
clothing before getting near theengine or cooling fans.WARNING - Diesel Engine
Never work on the injection sys- tem with the engine running orwithin 30 seconds after shutting
off the engine. High-pressure
pump, rail, injectors and high-pressure pipes are subject to
high pressure even after the
engine stopped. The fuel jet pro-
duced by fuel leaks may cause
serious injury, if it touches the
body. People using pacemakers
should not move more than
30cm closer to the ECU orwiring harness within the
engine room while the engine is
running, since the high currents
in the electronic engine control
system produce considerable
magnetic fields.

OWNER MAINTENANCE
The following lists are vehicle checks and inspections that should be per-
formed at the frequencies indicated
to help ensure safe, dependable
operation of your vehicle.
If you have any question, we recom-
mend that you consult an authorized
Kia dealer.
These Owner Maintenance Checks
are generally not covered by war-
ranties and you may be charged for
labor, parts and lubricants used. Owner maintenance schedule
When you stop for fuel:
Check the engine oil level.
Check the coolant level in the
coolant reservoir.
Check the windshield washer fluid level.
Look for low or under-inflated tires.
While operating your vehicle:
Note any changes in the sound of the exhaust or any smell of
exhaust fumes in the vehicle.
Check for vibrations in the steering wheel. Notice any increased steer-
ing effort or looseness in the steer-
ing wheel, or change in its straight-ahead position.
Notice if your vehicle constantly turns slightly or “pulls” to one side
when traveling on smooth, levelroad.
When stopping, listen and check for unusual sounds, pulling to one
side, increased brake pedal travel
or “hard-to-push” brake pedal.
If any slipping or changes in the operation of your transaxle occurs,
check the transaxle fluid level.
Check the automatic transaxle P (Park) function.
Check the parking brake.
Check for fluid leaks under your vehicle (water dripping from the air
conditioning system during or after
use is normal).
WARNING
Be careful when checking your
engine coolant level when the
engine is hot. Scalding hot
coolant and steam may blow out
under pressure. This could cause
burns or other serious injury.

Maintenance
At least monthly:
Check the coolant level in theengine coolant reservoir.
Check the operation of all exterior lights, including the stoplights, turn
signals and hazard warning flash-
ers.
Check the inflation pressures of all tires including the spare.
At least twice a year
(i.e., every Spring and Fall):
Check the radiator, heater and air conditioning hoses for leaks or
damage.
Check the windshield washer spray and wiper operation. Clean
the wiper blades with clean cloth
dampened with washer fluid.
Check the headlight alignment.
Check the muffler, exhaust pipes, shields and clamps.
Check the lap/shoulder belts for wear and function.
Check for worn tires and loose wheel lug nuts.
At least once a year:
Clean the body and door drainholes.
Lubricate the door hinges and checks, and hood hinges.
Lubricate the door and hood locks and latches.
Lubricate the door rubber weather- strips.
Check the air conditioning system.
Check the power steering fluid level.
Inspect and lubricate the automat- ic transaxle linkage and controls.
Clean the battery and terminals.
Check the brake fluid level.
