You can stop the shutdown, or reset thetimer, at any point before the 30-secondcountdown has expired by doing any of thefollowing:
•Interacting with your vehicle, for examplepressing the brake or accelerator pedal.
•You can temporarily switch off theshutdown feature any time the ignition ison using the information display. SeeInformation Displays (page 120). Thefeature only remains off for the currentignition cycle.
•During the 30-second countdown, thesystem prompts you to press OK orRESET to temporarily switch the featureoff for the current ignition cycle only.
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Stationary
1. Shift into park (P).
2. Press the push button ignition switch.
3. Apply the parking brake.
Note:The ignition, all electrical circuits andall warning lamps and indicators will beturned off.
Note:If the engine is idling for 30 minutes,the ignition and engine automatically shutsdown.
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Moving
WARNING: Switching off the enginewhen the vehicle is still moving will resultin a loss of brake and steering assistance.The steering will not lock, but higher effortwill be required. When the ignition isswitched off, some electrical circuits,including air bags, warning lamps andindicators may also be off. If the ignitionwas turned off accidentally, you can shiftinto neutral (N) and re-start the engine.
1. Shift into neutral and use the brakes tobring your vehicle to a safe stop.
2.When your vehicle has stopped, shift intopark (P).
3. Press and hold the push button ignitionswitch, or press it three times within twoseconds.
4. Apply the parking brake.
Guarding Against Exhaust Fumes
WARNING: Exhaust leaks may resultin entry of harmful and potentially lethalfumes into the passenger compartment. Ifyou smell exhaust fumes inside yourvehicle, have your vehicle inspectedimmediately. Do not drive if you smellexhaust fumes.
Important Ventilating Information
If you stop your vehicle and then leave theengine idling for long periods, werecommend that you do one of the following:
•Open the windows at least 1 in (3 cm).
•Set your climate control to outside air.

Starting and Stopping the Engine

•Elevation is below about 11,000 ft(3,350 m).
•Ambient temperature is moderate.
•If equipped with selectable drive modesand when you select Normal, Conserve,Slippery.
•The trailer is not connected.
•Tow haul mode not engaged.
•You have not selected Manual mode.
The green Auto-Start-Stopindicator light on the instrumentcluster will illuminates to indicatewhen the automatic engine stop occurs.
If the instrument cluster isequipped with a greyAuto-Start-Stop indicator light, itilluminates when automatic engine stop isnot available due to one of the above notedconditions not being met.
Automatic Engine Restart
Any of the following conditions results in anautomatic restart of the engine:
•You have removed your foot from thebrake pedal.
•You press the accelerator pedal.
•You press the accelerator and the brakepedal at the same time.
•The driver seatbelt becomes unfastenedor the driver door is ajar.
•Your vehicle is moving.
•The interior compartment does not meetcustomer comfort when air conditioningor heat is on.
•Fogging of the windows could occur andthe air conditioning is on.
•The battery is not within optimaloperating conditions.
•You have exceeded the maximum engineoff time.
•When you press the Auto-Start-Stopbutton with the engine automaticallystopped.
•The front defroster is turned to the Maxsetting.
•When you shift into park (P) the enginewill restart.
Any of the following conditions may result inan automatic restart of the engine:
•You have increased the blower fan speedor changed the climate controltemperature.
•You have an electrical accessory turnedon or plugged in.
Note:You may notice that the climate seatfan fluctuates during an automatic restart.

The system uses three types of guides tohelp you see what is behind your vehicle:
•Active guidelines (if equipped): Show theintended path of your vehicle whenreversing.
•Fixed guidelines: Show the actual pathyour vehicle is moving in while reversingin a straight line. This can be helpfulwhen backing into a parking space oraligning your vehicle with another objectbehind you.
•Centerline: Helps align the center of yourvehicle with an object. For example, atrailer.
Note:If the transmission is in reverse (R) andthe luggage compartment door or liftgate isopen, no rear view camera features display.
Note: When towing, the camera only seeswhat you are towing. This might not provideadequate coverage as it usually provides innormal operation and some objects mightnot be seen. In some vehicles, theguidelines may disappear when you connectthe trailer tow connector.
The camera may not operate correctly underthe following conditions:
•Nighttime or dark areas if one or bothreverse lamps are not operating.
•Mud, water or debris obstructs thecamera's view. Clean the lens with a soft,lint-free cloth and non-abrasive cleaner. The rear view camera has a washer thatactivates when you use the rear windowwasher. See Rear Window Wiper andWashers (page 95).
•The rear of your vehicle is hit ordamaged, causing the camera to becomemisaligned.
Camera System Settings
The rear view camera system settings canbe accessed through the display screen.See General Information (page 120).

The default setting for the rear camera delayis OFF.
When shifting the transmission out of reverse(R) and into any gear other than park (P), thecamera image remains in the display until:
•Your vehicle speed reachesapproximately 6 mph (10 km/h).
•You shift your vehicle into park (P).
360 DEGREE CAMERA (IF EQUIPPED)
WARNING: The 360 degree camerasystem still requires the driver to use it inconjunction with looking out of thewindows, and checking the interior andexterior mirrors for maximum coverage.
WARNING: Objects that are close toeither corner of the bumper or under thebumper, might not be seen on the screendue to the limited coverage of the camerasystem.
WARNING: Use caution when turningcamera features on or off when thetransmission is not in park (P). Make sureyour vehicle is not moving.
Note:The 360 degree camera system turnsoff when your vehicle is in motion at lowspeed, except when in reverse (R).
The 360 degree camera system consists offront, side and rear cameras. The system:
•Allows you to see what is directly in frontor behind your vehicle.
•Provides cross traffic view in front andbehind your vehicle.
•Allows you to see a top-down view of thearea outside your vehicle, including theblind spots.
•Provides visibility around your vehicle toyou in parking maneuvers such as:
•Centering in a parking space.
•Obstacles near vehicle.
•Parallel parking.
Camera Views
The front camera enable button islocated near the display screenand turns on the front camerawhen your vehicle is not in reverse (R).
When in park (P), neutral (N) or drive (D), onlyimages from the front cameras are displayed.Press the camera button to display the frontcamera image on the display screen.
When in reverse (R), only images from therear cameras are displayed. When you shiftinto reverse (R), the rear view camera imageautomatically shows on the display screen.
Advanced Camera Views (If Equipped)
Additional camera views may beavailable for vehicles with specificfeatures. Press the small cameraicon shown on the top left corner of thedisplay screen to open the camera viewmenu.

BREAKING-IN
You need to break in new tires forapproximately 300 mi (480 km). During thistime, your vehicle may exhibit some unusualdriving characteristics.
Avoid driving too fast during the first 1,000 mi(1,600 km). Vary your speed frequently andchange up through the gears early. Do notlabor the engine.
Do not tow during the first 1,000 mi(1,600 km).
REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE
WARNING: If you continue to driveyour vehicle when the engine isoverheating, the engine could stop withoutwarning. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in the loss of control of yourvehicle.
If the engine coolant temperature gaugeneedle moves to the upper limit position, theengine is overheating. See Gauges (page113).
You must only drive your vehicle for a shortdistance if the engine overheats. Thedistance you can travel depends on ambienttemperature, vehicle load and terrain. Theengine continues to operate with limitedpower for a short period of time.
If the engine temperature continues to rise,the fuel supply to the engine reduces. Theair conditioning switches off and the enginecooling fan operates continually.
1. Gradually reduce your speed and stopyour vehicle as soon as it is safe to doso.
2. Immediately switch the engine off toprevent severe engine damage.
3. Wait for the engine to cool down.
4. Check the coolant level. See EngineCoolant Check (page 364).
5. Have your vehicle checked as soon aspossible.
ECONOMICAL DRIVING
Fuel economy is affected by several thingssuch as how you drive, the conditions youdrive under and how you maintain yourvehicle.
There are some things to keep in mind thatmay improve your fuel economy:
•Accelerate and slow down in a smooth,moderate fashion.
•Drive at steady speeds.
•Anticipate stops; slowing down mayeliminate the need to stop.
•Combine errands and minimizestop-and-go driving (When runningerrands, go to the furthest destinationfirst and then work your way back home).
•Close the windows for high-speeddriving.
•Drive at reasonable speeds.
•Keep the tires properly inflated and useonly the recommended size.
•Use the recommended engine oil.
•Perform all regularly scheduledmaintenance.

Fuses

WARNING: This vehicle may havemore than one battery. Removing thebattery cables from only one battery doesnot disconnect your vehicle electricalsystem. Make sure you disconnect thebattery cables from all batteries whendisconnecting power. Failure to do so maycause serious personal injury or propertydamage.
Your vehicle is fitted with a Motorcraftmaintenance-free battery which normallydoes not require additional water.
When a battery replacement is required, youmust use a recommended replacementbattery that matches the electricalrequirements of the vehicle.
Note:After cleaning or replacing the battery,make sure you reinstall the battery cover orshield.
Note:If you add electrical accessories orcomponents to the vehicle, it may adverselyaffect the low voltage battery performanceand durability. This may also affect theperformance of other electrical systems inthe vehicle.
For longer, trouble-free operation, keep thetop of the battery clean and dry.
If you see any corrosion on the battery orterminals, remove the cables from theterminals and clean with a wire brush. Youcan neutralize the acid with a solution ofbaking soda and water.
Because your vehicle’s engine iselectronically controlled by a computer, somecontrol conditions are maintained by powerfrom the battery. When the battery isdisconnected or a new battery is installed,the engine must relearn its idle and fuel trimstrategy for optimum driveability andperformance. Flexible fuel vehicles (FFV)must also relearn the ethanol content of thefuel for optimum driveability andperformance.
To restore the settings, do the following:
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Shift into park (P) or neutral (N).
3. Switch off all accessories.
4. Press the brake pedal and start yourvehicle.
5. Run the engine until it reaches normaloperating temperature. While the engineis warming up, complete the following:Reset the clock. Reset the powerwindows bounce-back feature. SeeWindows and Mirrors (page 105). Resetthe radio station presets. See AudioSystem (page 432).
6. Allow the engine to idle for at least oneminute.
7.Drive the vehicle at least 10 mi (16 km) tocompletely relearn the idle trim and fueltrim strategy.
Note:If you do not allow the engine torelearn the idle and fuel trim strategy, theidle quality of your vehicle may be adverselyaffected until the engine computereventually relearns the idle trim and fuel trimstrategy.

Maintenance

Note:For flexible fuel vehicles, if you areoperating on E85, you may experience poorstarts or an inability to start the engine anddriveability problems until the fuel trim andethanol content have been relearned.
Make sure that you dispose of old batteriesin an environmentally friendly way. Seekadvice from your local authority aboutrecycling old batteries.
If storing your vehicle for more than 30 dayswithout recharging the battery, werecommend that you disconnect the negativebattery cable to maintain battery charge forquick starting.
Battery Management System (If Equipped)
The battery management system monitorsbattery conditions and takes actions toextend battery life. If excessive battery drainis detected, the system temporarily disablessome electrical systems to protect thebattery.
Systems included are:
•Heated rear window.
•Heated seats.
•Climate control.
•Heated steering wheel.
•Audio unit.
•Navigation system.
A message may appear in the informationdisplays to alert you that battery protectionactions are active. These messages are onlyfor notification that an action is taking place,and not intended to indicate an electricalproblem or that the battery requiresreplacement.
After battery replacement, or in some casesafter charging the battery with an externalcharger, the battery management systemrequires eight hours of vehicle sleep time torelearn the battery state of charge. Duringthis time your vehicle must remain fullylocked with the ignition switched off.
Note:Prior to relearning the battery state ofcharge, the battery management systemmay temporarily disable some electricalsystems.
Electrical Accessory Installation
To make sure the battery managementsystem works correctly, do not connect anelectrical device ground connection directlyto the battery negative post. This can causeinaccurate measurements of the batterycondition and potential incorrect systemoperation.
Note:If you add electrical accessories orcomponents to the vehicle, it may adverselyaffect battery performance and durability.This may also affect the performance ofother electrical systems in the vehicle.

•Do not allow wax to come in contact withany non-body (low-gloss black) coloredtrim. The wax will discolor or stain theparts over time.
•Roof racks.
•Bumpers.
•Grained door handles.
•Side moldings.
•Mirror housings.
•Windshield cowl area.
•Do not apply wax to glass areas.
•After waxing, your car's paint should feelsmooth, and be free of streaks andsmudges.
CLEANING THE ENGINE
Engines are more efficient when they areclean because grease and dirt buildup keepthe engine warmer than normal.
When washing:
•Take care when using a power washerto clean the engine. The high-pressurefluid could penetrate the sealed partsand cause damage.
•Do not spray a hot engine with cold waterto avoid cracking the engine block orother engine components.
•Spray Motorcraft Engine Shampoo andDegreaser on all parts that requirecleaning and pressure rinse clean. InCanada, use Motorcraft Engine Shampoo.
•Never wash or rinse the engine while itis hot or running; water in the runningengine may cause internal damage.
•Never wash or rinse any ignition coil,spark plug wire or spark plug well, or thearea in and around these locations.
•Cover the battery, power distribution box,and air filter assembly to prevent waterdamage when cleaning the engine.
CLEANING THE WINDOWS AND
WIPER BLADES
Car wash chemicals and environmentalfallout can result in windshield and wiperblade contamination. Dirty windshield andwipers will result in poor windshield wiperoperation. Keep the windshield and wiperblades clean to maintain windshield wiperperformance.
To clean the windshield and wiper blades:
•Clean the windshield with a non-abrasiveglass cleaner. When cleaning the interiorof the windshield, avoid getting any glasscleaner on the instrument panel or doorpanels. Wipe any glass cleaner off thesesurfaces immediately.
•For windshields contaminated with treesap, chemicals, wax or bugs, clean theentire windshield using steel wool (nogreater than 0000 grade) in a circularmotion and rinse with water.
•Clean the wiper blades with isopropylrubbing alcohol or windshield washerconcentrate.
