▼Fuel Requirements (SKYACTIV-D 2.2)
The vehicle will operate efficiently on diesel fuel with specification Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel
(ULSD, 15 ppm sulfur or less) fuel that meets the ASTM D975 standard or the equivalent.
Fuel grade labels are visible on fuel-filler lid, therefore, verify the fuel grade before
refueling. If the fuel grade cannot be verified, ask the gas station attendant.
CAUTION

Never use fuel other than specification Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD, 15 ppm sulfur or less)
fuel that meets the ASTM D975 standard or the equivalent for your vehicle. Use of gasoline
or kerosene in diesel engines will resu lt in fuel system and engine damage.
 Never use diesel fuel with concentrations of methyl ester bio-diesel higher than 5 % (B5),
such as B20 or B100.
 Never add fuel system additives. Otherwise, the emission control system could be damaged.
 If any type of incorrect fuel is accidently pu mped into the fuel tank, do not turn on the
engine and drive the vehicle, and co nsult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
Turning on the engine or driving the vehicle with the incorrect fuel could cause damage to
the fuel pump and fuel injectors.
 Do not mistake the refueling port for the DEF filler port. If fuel was added to the DEF filler
port by mistake, do not turn on the engine and drive the vehicle, and consult an Authorized
Mazda Dealer.
Turning on the engine or driving the vehicle with fuel in the DEF filler port could cause
damage to the emission control system.

Fuel for winter driving is available. Ask the gas station attendant for details.
When refueling, always add at least 10 L (2.6 US gal, 2.2 Imp gal) of fuel.

NOTE
Under U.S. federal law, any modification to the original-equipment emission control
system before the first sale and registration of a vehicle is subject to penalties. In some
states, such modification made on a used vehicle is also subject to penalties.
While the engine is off, the sound of a valve opening and closing can be heard at the rear
of the vehicle, however this does not indicate an abnormality. The vehicle has a
self-checking device and it operates while the engine is off.
▼Emission Control System (SKYACTIV-D 2.2)
This vehicle is equipped with an emission control system (the catalytic converter and the
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system
*1 are part of this system) that enables the
vehicle to comply with existing exhaust emissions requirements.
*1 SCR system is designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the exhaust gas and purify the exhaust gas by injecting it with Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). For more details, refer
to the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) System (page 4-226).
About the catalytic converter
WA R N I N G
Never park over or near anything flammable:
Parking over or near anything flammable, such as dry grass, is dangerous. Even with the
engine turned off, the exhaust system remains very hot after normal use and could ignite
anything flammable. A resulting fire could cause serious injury or death.
CAUTION
Ignoring the following precautions could cause le ad to accumulate on the catalyst inside the
converter or cause the converter to get very ho t. Either condition will damage the converter
and cause poor performance.
 Do not drive your Mazda with any sign of engine malfunction.
 Do not coast with the ignition switched off.
 Do not descend steep grades in gear with the ignition switched off.
 Do not operate the engine at hi gh idle for more than 2 minutes.
 Do not tamper with the emission control syst em. All inspections and adjustments must be
made by a qualified technician.
 Do not push-start or pull-start this vehicle.

Turbocharger Information (SKYACTIV-G 2.5T,SKYACTIV-D 2.2)
CAUTION
After driving at freeway speeds or up a long h ill, trailer towing for a long time, idle the
engine at least 30 seconds before stopping it. Otherwise, the turbocharger could be
damaged.
 Racing or over-revving the engine, particularly after it's just been started, can damage the
turbocharger.
 To protect the engine from damage, the engine is designed so that it cannot be raced just
after starting it in extremely cold weather.
The turbocharger greatly enhances engine power. Its advanced design provides improved
operation and requires minimum maintenance.

To get the most from it, observe the following.
1. Change engine oil and filter according to Scheduled Maintenance (page 6-4).
2. Use only recommended engine oil (page 6- 25). Extra additives are NOT recommended.

High-altitude operation
CAUTION
Be aware of the towing load weight differences when towing at high altitudes. For altitudes
exceeding 1,000 meter (3,280 ft 10 in), always reduce the towing load by 10 % for every 1,000
meter (3,280 ft 10 in) increase in altitude from the load indicated under the maximum GCWR
heading in the trailer towing-load table. If the determined maximum total towing load
weight is exceeded, the engine and ot her power-train parts may be damaged.

Always keep tow loads within specified limits as indicated in the Trailer Towing-Load Table:
Attempting to tow loads greater than those sp ecified is dangerous as it may cause serious
handling and performance problems that could res ult in personal injury or vehicle damage,
or both.
Load your trailer with the weight about 60 % toward the front and 40 % toward the rear:
Loading the trailer with more weight in the rear than in the front is dangerous. Doing so could
cause you to lose control. The tr ailer tongue load must be 10 %―15 % of the total trailer load
(sum of the weights of the trailer and cargo).
Always have the total trailer weight and tongue load determined prior to departure:
Attempting to tow loads without determining the total trailer weight and tongue load is
dangerous. Trailer sway from crosswinds, rough roads or other causes could result in loss of
control and a serious accident.

NOTE
After starting the engine, the push
button start indicator light (amber)
turns off and the ignition switches to
the ON position.

After pressing the push button start
and before the engine starts, the
operation sound of the fuel pump
motor from near the fuel tank can be
heard, however, this does not
indicate a malfunction.
(SKYACTIV-D 2.2)
The starter does not rotate until
the glow indicator light turns off.
If the ignition is left switched ON
for a long period of time without
the engine running after the glow
plugs are warmed up, the glow
plugs may warm up again which
will illuminate the glow indicator
light.
When starting the engine, do not
release the brake pedal until the
glow indicator light in the
instrument cluster turns off and
the engine starts, after pressing
the push button start.
If the brake pedal is released
before the engine starts, depress
the brake pedal again and press
the push button start to start the
engine.
8. After starting the engine, let it idle for about 10 seconds.

Whether the engine is cold or
warm, it should be started without
the use of the accelerator.
If the engine does not start the first
time, refer to Starting a Flooded
Engine under Emergency Starting.
If the engine still does not start,
have your vehicle inspected by an
Authorized Mazda Dealer (page
7-17).
(SKYACTIV-D 2.2)
If the ambient temperature is lower
than about
－ 10 °C (14 °F), the
maximum engine speed may not be
attained for about 3 minutes after
the engine starts to protect the
engine.
▼ Engine Start Function When Key
Battery is Dead
CAUTION
When starting the engine by holding the
transmitter over the push button start due
to a dead key battery or a malfunctioning
key, be careful not to allow the following,
otherwise the signal from the key will not
be received correctly and the engine may
not start.

Metal parts of other keys or metal objects
touch the key.

2. Press the push button start toswitch the ignition position. The
ignition switches in the order of
ACC, ON, and off each time the
push button start is pressed. To
switch the ignition position
again, perform the operation
from the beginning.
▼Emergency Operation for Starting
the Engine
If the KEY warning light (red) illuminates,
or the push button start indicator light
(amber) flashes, this could indicate that
the engine may not start using the usual
starting method (for vehicles with a type
A/type B instrument cluster (page 7-24),
messages are displaye
d in the instrument
cluster). Have your vehicle inspected at an
Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as
possible. If this occurs, the engine can be
force-started. Press and hold the push
button start until the engine starts. Other
procedures necessary for starting the
engine such as having the key in the cabin,
and depressing the clutch pedal (manual
transaxle) or the brake pedal (automatic
transaxle) are required.
Turning the Engine Off
WA R N I N G
Do not stop the engine while the vehicle is
moving:
Stopping the engine while the vehicle is
moving for any reason other than in an
emergency is dangerous. Stopping the
engine while the vehicle is moving will
result in reduced braking ability due to the
loss of power braking, which could cause
an accident and serious injury.
1. Stop the vehicle completely.
2. (Manual transaxle)
Shift into neutral and set the parking
brake.
(Automatic transaxle)
Shift the selector lever to the P
position and set the parking brake.
3. Press the push butt on start to turn off
the engine. The igniti on position is off.
CAUTION
When leaving the vehicle, make sure the
push button start is
off.
 (SKYACTIV-D 2.2)
If the engine is started and stopped
repeatedly before it warms up, the
engine may speed up while the vehicle is
stopped to clean the engine internally.
Do not stop the engine until the engine
returns to running at its normal speed.
