General notes STEER CONTROL helps you by transmitting a
noticeable steerin gforce to the steering
wheel in the direction required for vehicle
stabilisation.
This steerin gsupport is provided in particular
if:
R both right wheels or both left wheels are on
as lippery road surfac ewhen you brake
heavily
R the vehicle starts to skid

Immobiliser
The immobiliser prevent syour vehicle from
being started without the correc tkey. X
To activat ewith th ekey: remove the key
fro mt he ignition lock.
X To activat ewith KEYLESS-GO: switchthe
ignition off and open the driver's door.
X To deactivate: switchont he ignition.
When leavin gthe vehicle, always tak ethe key
with you and lock the vehicle. Anyone can
star tthe engin eifavalid key has been left
inside the vehicle.
i The immobiliser is always deactivated
when you star tthe engine. ATA (Anti-Theft Alar
msystem) X
To prime: lock the vehicle with the key or
KEYLESS-GO.
Indicator lamp :flashes .The alarm sys-
tem is prime dafter approximately
15 seconds.
X To deactivate: unlockthe vehicle with the
key or KEYLESS-GO.
or X Insert the key int othe ignition lock.
Av isual and audible alarm is triggered if the
alarm system is primed and you open:

protection if you lock you rvehicle and it:

Ac heck whichperiodically establishes aradio
connection between th evehicl eand th ekey
determines whether avalid ke yisinthe vehi-
cle .This occurs, for example:

touched
R when startin gthe engine

udon ot intend to us eakey for an exten-
de dp eriodoft ime,you can deactivate the
KEYLESS-GO functio nofthe key .The key will
then us everyl ittle power, thereb yconserving
battery power. For the purposes of activa-
tion/deactivation, the vehicl edoesn ot have
to be nearby.
X To deactivate: press the&button on
the key twice in rapi dsuccession.
The battery check lamp of the key
(Y page 97 )flashe stwice briefl yand
lights up once ,then KEYLESS-GO is deac-
tivated.
X To activate: press any button on the key or
insert the key into the ignition lock.
KEYLESS-GO and al lofits associate dfea-

The key now functions as follows:

% button once.

ton twice.

The KEYLESS-GO functio nisc hange dasfol-
lows:
X To unloc kthe driver' sdoor: touch the
inne rsurface of the door handl eonthe
driver's door.
X To unloc kcentrally: touch the inne rsur-
face of the door handl eonthe front-
passenge rdoorort he rea rdoor.
X To lock centrally: touch the outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles.
X To restore the factory settings: press
and hol ddownthe % and& buttons

If yo uusethe emergency key element to
unlock and open the driver's door or the boot
lid/tailgate, the anti-thef talarm system will
be triggered (Y page 89).96
KeyOpening and closing

There are several ways to deactivate the
alarm:
X To deactivat ethe alarmw ith the key:
press the %or& button on the key.
or
X Insert the key into the ignition lock.
or X To deactivat ethe alarmw ith KEYLESS-
GO: press the Start/Stop button in the igni-
tion lock. The key must be in the vehicle.
or
X Lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. The key must be outside the vehicle.
If you unlock the vehicle using the emergency
key element, the fuel filler flap will not be
unlocked automatically.
X To unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the
key into the ignition lock.
Removing the emergency key element X
Push release catch :in the direction of
the arrow and, at the same time, remove
emergenc ykey element ;from the key.

Locking th
evehicle (emergency key
element)
If th evehicle can no longer be locked with the
key, use th eemergency key element.
X Open th edriver' sdoor.
X Close th efront-pa ssenger door ,the rear
door sand th eboot lid/tailgate.
X Pres sthe locking button (Y page 101).
X Chec kwhether th elocking knobs on the
front-passenger door and th erear doors
are still visible. Pres sthe locking knobs
down by han difnecessary.
X Close th edriver' sdoor.
X Take th eemergency key element out of the
key (Y page 97).
X Inser tthe emergency key element int othe
lock of th edriver' sdoor as far as it will go. X
Turn th eemergency key element clockwise
to position 1.
The door is unlocked.
i On right-hand-driv
evehicles, tur nthe
emergency key element anti-clockwise.
X Turn th eemergency key element back and
remove it.
X Mak esure that th edoor sand th eboot lid/
tailgate are locked.
X Inser tthe emergency key element int othe

WARNING
Combustio nengine semit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter th evehicle interio riftheboot
lid/tailgat eisopen when th eengine is run-
ning, especially if th evehicle is in motion.
Ther eisar isk of poisoning.
Always switch off th eengine before opening
th eb oot lid/tailgate. Never driv ewith the
boot lid/tailgat eopen.
! The boot lid/tailgat
eswings upwards and
to th erear when opened. Therefore, make
sure that there is sufficient clearance
above and behin dthe boot lid/tailgate.

Stow luggage or loads preferably in th eboot/
luggage compartment. Observe th eloading
guidelines (Y page 342).
Do no tleave th ekey in th eboot/luggage
