WARNING Risk of accident due t o restric-
ted detection performance of vehicle sen-
sors and cameras
If the area around vehicle sensors or cameras
is co
vered, damaged or dirty, certain driving
and safety systems cannot function correctly.
There is a risk of an accident.
Keep the area around vehicle sensors or
camer

as clear of any obstructions and
clean.
Have damage to the bumper, radiator
g

rille or stone chipping in the area of the
front and rear windows repaired at a
qualiNed specialist workshop. Particularly, keep the areas around the sensors
and camer
as free of dirt, ice or slush
( page 407). The sensors and cameras must
not be covered and the detection ranges around
them must be kept free. Do not attach additional licence plate brackets, advertisements, stickers,
f
oils or foils to protect against stone chippings in
the detection range of the sensors and cameras.
Make sure that there are no overhanging loads
protruding into the detection range.
If there is damage to a bumper or the radiator
grille, or aser an impact, have the function of the
sensors checked at a qualiNed specialist work-
shop. Have damage or stone chipping in the area
of the cameras on the front and rear windows
repaired at a qualiNed specialist workshop.

( page 307) Functions of ABS
The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) regulates the
br

ake pressure in critical driving situations:
= During braking, for instance, at maximum full-
stop braking or if there is insuPcient tyre trac-
tion, the wheels are prevented from locking.
= Vehicle steerability while braking is ensured.
If ABS intervenes when braking, you will feel a
pulsing in the brake pedal. The pulsating brake
pedal can be an indication of hazardous road con- Driving and parking

e while driving.
System limits = ABS is active from speeds of approx. 5 km/h.
= ABS may be impaired or may not function if a
malfunction has occurred and the yellow %

malfunction in BAS (Brake Assist System)
If BAS is malfunctioning, the braking distance
in an emer
gency braking situation is
increased.
Depress the brake pedal with full force in
emer

gency braking situations. ABS pre-
vents the wheels from locking. The Brake Assist System (BAS) supports your
emer
gency braking situation with additional brake
force. If you depress the brake pedal quickly, BAS is
activ

ated:
= BAS automatically boosts the brake pressure.
= BAS can shorten the braking distance.
= ABS prevents the wheels from locking.
The brakes will function as usual once you release
the brake pedal. BAS is deactivated. Function of ESP

the following situations within physical limits:
= When pulling away on wet or slippery carriage-
ways.
= When braking.
= Vehicles with trailer hitch: in trailer operation
from speeds of 65 km/h, if the vehicle/trailer
combination begins to sway from side to side.
= In strong side winds when you are driving
faster than 80 km/h.
If the vehicle deviates from the direction desired
by the driver, ESP n
can stabilise the vehicle by
intervening in the following ways:
= One or more wheels are braked.
= The drive system output is adapted according
to the situation.
ESP n
is deactivated if the

When driving with a trailer, ESP
n
can s tabilise
your vehicle if the trailer begins to swerve from
side to side:
= ESP n
trailer stabilisation is active above
speeds of 65 km/h.
= Slight swerving is reduced by means of a tar-
geted, individual brake application on one
side.
= In the event of severe swerving, the operating
energy output is also reduced and all wheels
are braked.
ESP n
trailer stabilisation may be impaired or may
not function if:
= The trailer is not connected correctly or is not
detected properly by the vehicle. Activating/deactivating ESP

HOLD function
The HOLD function holds t

he vehicle at a stand-
still without requiring you to depress the brake
pedal, e.g. while waiting in traPc.
The HOLD function is only an aid. The responsibil-
ity for the vehicle safely standing still remains with
the driver.
System limits
The HOLD function is only intended to provide
assistance when driving and is not a suPcient
means of safeguarding the vehicle against rolling
away when stationary.
= The incline must not be greater than 30%. Activating/deactivating the HOLD function &
WARNING Risk of an accident due t
o the
HOLD function being active when you
leave the vehicle
If the vehicle is only braked with the HOLD
function it could, in t
he following situations,
roll away:
= If there is a malfunction in the system or in
the power supply.
= If the HOLD function is deactivated by
depressing the accelerator pedal or brake
pedal, e.g. by a vehicle occupant.
Always secure the vehicle against rolling
a
way before you leave it. Requirements:
= The v

ehicle is stationary.

way. Function of Hill Start Assist
Hill Start Assist holds the vehicle for a short time
when pulling a

way on a hill under the following
conditions:
= The transmission is in position h or k. =
The electr
ic parking brake is released.
This gives you enough time to move your foot
from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal and
depress it before the vehicle begins to roll away. &
WARNING Risk of accident and injur
y due
to the vehicle rolling away
Aser a shor
t time, Hill Start Assist no longer
holds the vehicle.
Swisly mo

= activating the hazard warning lights
( page 160) If the vehicle is braked sharply from speeds above
50 km/h

, the brake lamps Oash rapidly. This pro-
vides traPc travelling behind you with an even
more noticeable warning. Valet service mode
Function of the valet service mode
In v

alet service mode, the vehicle acceleration is
limited to reduce the risk of damage to and
improper use of the vehicle when it is handed over
to third parties.
Valet service mode is characterised by the follow-
ing:
= The maximum speed that can be driven is limi-
ted to 80 km/h.
= Drive programs B and are not availa-
ble.
= ESP n
cannot be deactivated.
= ProNles that are still logged in are logged out
and unprotected proNles are secured. 244

ATTENTION ASSIST
Function of ATTENTION ASSIST with microsleep
de
tection
% The sub-function microsleep detection
depends on t

he country and is only available
in conjunction with the driver camera
( page 344).
ATTENTION ASSIST assists you on long, monoto-
nous jour
neys, e.g. on motorways and trunk
roads. If indicators of fatigue or increasing lapses
in concentration on the part of the driver are
detected, the system suggests taking a break.
ATTENTION ASSIST is only an aid. It cannot
always detect fatigue or lapses in concentration in
time. The system is not a substitute for a well-res-
ted and attentive driver. On long journeys, take
regular breaks in good time that allow for ade-
quate recuperation.
You can choose between two settings:
= Standard: normal system sensitivity.
= Sensitive: higher system sensitivity. The driver
is warned earlier and the attention level detec- ted by ATTENTION ASSIST is adapted accord-
ingl
y.
If fatigue or increasing inattention is detected, the
warning appears in the driver display: ATTEN-
TION ASSIST Take a break! . you can acknowl-
edge the message and take a break if necessary.
If you do not take a break and ATTENTION ASSIST
continues to detect increasing lapses in concen-
tration, you will be warned again aser a minimum
of 15 minutes. The following information is displayed in the driv-
er's displa

y:
= The length of the journey since the last break =
The att
ention level determined by ATTENTION
ASSIST:
- The more segments 2 of the circle dis-
played, the higher the detected attention
level.
- Fewer segments 2 are displayed in the
circle as the attention level decreases.
= Microsleep detection 1status:
- Deactivated: display 1 is hidden.
- Activated but not operational: display 1
is grey.
- Activated and operational: display 1 is
green.
If ATTENTION ASSIST is unable to calculate the
attention level and cannot issue a warning, the
System suspended message appears.
If the system, which uses the driver camera,
detects indicators of microsleep, the ATTENTION
ASSIST Microsleep Take a break! warning mes-
sage appears in the driver's display and a warning
tone sounds simultaneously. This warning mes-
sage must be conNrmed by Touch Control. It is
recommended that you take a break immediately. 246

If the driver display shows a warning, a service
ar
ea search is oMered in the multimedia system.
You can select a rest area and start navigation to
this rest area.
If you restart the vehicle, ATTENTION ASSIST with
microsleep detection is automatically activated.
The last selected sensitivity level remains stored.
System limits
ATTENTION ASSIST is active in the 60 km/h to
200 km/h speed range.
The microsleep detection function is available at a
speed of 20 km/h and above.
Particularly in the following situations, ATTENTION
ASSIST only functions in a restricted manner and
warnings may be delayed or not occur:
= If you have been driving for less than approx-
imately 30 minutes.
= If the road condition is poor (uneven road sur-
face or potholes).
= If there is a strong side wind.
= If you adopt a sporty driving style (high corner-
ing speeds or high rates of acceleration). =
If t he Steering Assist function of Active Dis-
tance Assist DISTRONIC is active.
= If the clock is set to the incorrect time.
= If you change lanes and vary your speed fre-
quently in active driving situations.
Microsleep detection also does not function when
the driver camera cannot detect the driver's eyes,
forexample as a result of the following factors:
= The driver's eyes are covered due to the steer-
ing column position, forexample.
= Poor lighting conditions.
= Some types of spectacles or sunglasses.
= The driver's line of vision is outside the driver
camera's Neld of vision.
Also observe any information regarding display
messages that can be displayed in the driver's
display.
The tiredness and alertness assessment of
ATTENTION ASSIST with microsleep detection is
reset and restarted when continuing the journey
in the following situations:
= If you switch oM the vehicle. =
If y ou unfasten your seat belt and open the
driver's door (e.g. to change drivers or take a
break).
