Therefore, data generated or processed by controlunits may be attributable to a person or, undercertain conditions, become attributable to a per-
son. Depending on which vehicle data are availa-
ble, it may be possible to make inferences about,
for example, your driving behavior, your location,
your route or your use patterns.
Legal requirements regarding the disclosure of
data
If legally required to do so, manufacturers are, in
individual cases, legally obliged to provide govern-
mental entities, upon request and to the extent required, data stored by the manufacturer. For
example, this may be the case during the investi-
gation of a criminal oMense.
Governmental entities are themselves, in individ- ual cases and within the applicable legal frame- work, authorized to read out data from the vehi-cle. In the case of an accident, information thatcan help with an investigation can, therefore, betaken from the air bag control unit, for example.
Operational data in the vehicle
This is data regarding the operation of the vehicle, which have been processed by control units.This includes the following data, for example:
= vehicle status information such as the speed,
longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration,
number of wheel revolutions or the fastened
seat belts display
= ambient conditions, such as temperature, rain
sensor or distance sensor
Generally, the use of these data is temporary;
they will not be stored beyond the period of oper-
ation and will only be processed within the vehicle
itself. Control units osen contain data memories
for vehicle keys, for example. Their use permits
the temporary or permanent documentation of
technical information about the vehicle\bs operat-
ing state, component loads, maintenance require-
ments and technical events or malfunctions.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, the follow- ing data are stored:
= operating status of system components, such
as Nll levels, tire pressure or battery status
= malfunctions or faults in important system
components, such as lights or brakes= system reactions in special driving situations,
such as air bag deployment or the intervention of stability control systems
= information on events leading to vehicle dam-
age
= charge level of the high-voltage battery, esti-
mated range
In certain cases, it may be required to store data
that would have otherwise been used only tempo-
rarily. This may be the case if the vehicle has
detected a malfunction, for example.
If you use services, such as repair services and
maintenance work, stored operational data as well as the vehicle identiNcation number can be
read out and used. They can be read out by
service network employees, such as workshops and manufacturers or third parties, such as break-
down services. The same is true in the case of warranty claims and quality assurance measures.
In general, the readout is performed via the legally
prescribed port for the diagnostics connection in
the vehicle. The operational data that are read out document technical states of the vehicle or ofindividual components and assist in the diagnosisGeneral notes39

of malfunctions, compliance with warranty obliga-
tions and quality improvement. To that end, these
data, in particular information about component
loads, technical events, malfunctions and other faults may be transmitted along with the vehicle
identiNcation number to the manufacturer. Fur-
thermore, the manufacturer is subject to product liability. For this reason the manufacturer alsouses operational data from the vehicle, for exam-
ple, for recalls. These data can also be used to
examine the customer\bs warranty and guarantee
claims.
Malfunction memories in the vehicle can be reset
by a service outlet or at your request as part of
repair or maintenance work.
Convenience and infotainment functions
You can store convenience settings and individual
settings in the vehicle and change or reset them
at any time.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, this
includes the following settings, for example:
= seat and steering wheel positions
= suspension and climate control settings
= individual settings, such as interior lightingDepending on the selected equipment, you can
import data into vehicle infotainment functions yourself.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, this
includes the following data, for example:
= multimedia data, such as music, Nlms or pho-
tos for playback in an integrated multimedia
system
= address book data for use in connection with
an integrated hands-free system or an integra-
ted navigation system
= entered navigation destinations
= data about the use of Internet services
These data for convenience and infotainment
functions may be saved locally in the vehicle or
they may be located on a device which you have
connected to the vehicle, such as a smartphone,
USB Oash drive or MP3 player. If you have entered
these data yourself, you can delete them at any time.
This data is transmitted from the vehicle to third
parties only at your request. This applies, in par-ticular, when you use online services in accord-
ance with the settings that you have selected.
Smartphone integration (e.g. Android Auto or
Apple CarPlay n
)
If your vehicle is accordingly equipped, you can connect your smartphone or another mobile end
device to the vehicle. You can then control them by means of the control elements integrated in
the vehicle. Images and audio from the smart-
phone can be output via the multimedia system. Certain information is simultaneously transferred
to your smartphone. Depending on the type and integration, this includes position data, day/night
mode and other general vehicle statuses. For
more information please consult the Operator\bs Manual of the vehicle/infotainment system.
This integration allows the use of selected smart-
phone apps, such as navigation or music player apps. There is no further interaction between the
smartphone and the vehicle; in particular, vehicle
data is not directly accessible. The type of addi-
tional data processing is determined by the pro- vider of the app being used. Which settings you
can make, if any, depends on the speciNc app and
the operating system of your smartphone.40General notes

Online services
Wireless network connection
If your vehicle has a wireless network connection,
it enables data to be exchanged between your vehicle and additional systems. The wireless net-
work connection is made possible by the vehicle\bs
own transmitter and receiver or by a mobile end device that you have brought into the vehicle, forexample, a smartphone. Online functions can be
used via the wireless network connection. This
includes online services and applications/apps
provided to you by the manufacturer or by other
providers.
Manufacturer\bs services
Regarding the manufacturer\bs online services, the individual functions are described by the manu-facturer in a suitable place, for example, in theOperator\bs Manual or on the manufacturer\bs web-
site, where the relevant data protection informa-
tion is also given. Personal data may be used for the provision of online services. Data is
exchanged via a secure connection, such as the manufacturer\bs designated IT systems. Any per-
sonal data which is collected, processed and
used, other than for the provision of services, is done so exclusively on the basis of legal permis-
sion. This is the case, for example, for a legally prescribed emergency call system, a contractual
agreement or when consent has been given.
You can have services and functions, some of
which are subject to a fee, activated or deactiva-
ted. This excludes legally prescribed functions and
services, such as an emergency call system.
Third-party services
If you use online services from other providers (third parties), these services are the responsibil-
ity of the provider in question and subject to that provider\bs data protection conditions and terms ofuse. As a general rule, the manufacturer has no
inOuence on the content exchanged.
For this reason, when services are provided by
third parties, please ask the service provider in question for information about the type, extent
and purpose of the collection and use of personal data.Data protection rights
Depending on your country or the equipment and
range of functions of your vehicle as well as the services you use and the services on oMer, you
are entitled to diMerent data protection rights.
Further information on data protection and your data protection rights can either be found on the
manufacturer\bs website or you will receive this information as part of the various services andservice oMers. There you will also Nnd the contact
information for the manufacturer and its data pro-
tection oPcers.
At a workshop, for example, with the support of a
specialist and possibly for a fee, you can have
data read out which is stored only locally in the
vehicle.
MBUX multimedia system/Mercedes me connect
If the vehicle is equipped with the MBUX multime-
dia system or Mercedes me connect, additional
data about the vehicle\bs operation, the use of the
vehicle in certain situations, and the location of the vehicle may be compiled by the MBUX multi-media system or Mercedes me connect.

Event data recorder
USA only:
This vehicle is equipped with an event data
recorder (EDR). The main purpose of an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like situa-
tions, such as an air bag deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in understand-
ing how a vehicle!

Brief overview of the most important points
Basic information
Make sure that the following prerequisites in par-
ticular have been met so that the components of the restraint system are able to provide the inten-ded level of protection:
= Sit correctly (  page 45).
= Fasten the seat belt correctly (  page 46).
- Function of the seat belt warning lamp

Note that negligence when adjusting your sittingposture and fastening the seat belt may have seri-
ous consequences. Be diligent and make sure that all vehicle occupants are sitting correctly and
have fastened their seat belts properly before
starting every journey.
Information on the correct seat position
The seat position must be correct in order for the
components of the restraint system to provide the intended level of protection.
The seat position inOuences both the protection
provided by the seat belt and the additional pro- tection provided by the air bag.
The correct seat position with an almost upright
posture and a correctly fastened seat belt also
reduce the risk posed by the air bag when it is
deployed.
When choosing the seat, take note of the available space. When you are sitting with the right posture
in a nearly upright position, your head should not
touch the roof.
&WARNING Risk of injury or death due to
an incorrect seat position
If you deviate from the correct seat position,
the air bag cannot provide its intended protec-
tive function.
Each vehicle occupant must make sure of the
following.
Put the seat in the correct position.Fasten seat belts correctly. Pregnant
women must take particular care to
ensure that the lap belt never lies across
the abdomen.Observe the following information.
In order for the restraint system to provide the intended level of protection, observe the following information:
= Before starting your journey, adjust your seat
correctly (  page 109).
When doing so, make sure you are able to fas-
ten your seat belt correctly. The shoulder belt
strap must be routed forward from the seat belt outlet over the center of your shoulder.
= Keep your distance from the air bags, espe-
cially the front air bags. Set the driver\bs seatand front passenger seat as far back as possi-
ble while making sure the seat belt is fastened
correctly.
= If persons are sitting on the rear seats, vehicle
occupants should maintain a suPcient dis-
tance to the parts of the vehicle interior in front of them.
= Make sure there are no people, animals or
objects between the vehicle occupants and an air bag.
= If you are the driver, observe the following
information on the correct position of the driv-
er\bs seat (  page 109).
Hold the steering wheel only by the steering wheel rim. This allows the driver\bs air bag to
fully deploy.
= Assume a nearly upright position, with your
buttocks as far back as possible in the gap between the seat cushion and seat backrest.
This ensures that your back lies as Oat and
Nrmly as possible against the seat backrest.Occupant safety45

=While driving, do not lean forward and do not
lean against the door or side window. You may otherwise be in the deployment area of the air
bags.
= Sit with your feet resting on the Ooor, if possi-
ble. Your thighs are slightly supported by the seat cushion
Do not put your feet up on the cockpit, for
example. Your feet may otherwise be in the
deployment area of the air bag.
= Fasten the seat belt correctly.
Notes on wearing the seat belt correctly
Always fasten your seat belt correctly before
starting a journey. A seat belt can provide the
best level of protection only if it is worn correctly.
&WARNING Risk of injury or death due to
incorrectly fastened seat belt
If the seat belt is not worn correctly, it cannot
perform its intended protective function.
In addition, an incorrectly fastened seat belt
can also cause injuries, for example, in the event of an accident or when braking or
changing direction suddenly.Always ensure that all vehicle occupants
have their seat belts fastened correctly
and are sitting properly.&WARNING Risk of injury or death when
additional restraint systems are not used
for persons with a smaller stature
Persons under 5 s (1.50 m ) tall cannot wear
the seat belt correctly without a suitable addi-
tional restraint system.
Always secure persons under 5 s
(1.50 m) tall in a suitable restraint sys-
tem.
Each vehicle occupant must observe the following
notes in particular:
= The seat belt must not be twisted:
=The shoulder belt strap must be routed
forward from the seat belt outlet over the cen- ter of your shoulder.
= The shoulder belt strap should neither touch
your neck nor be routed under your arm or
behind your back.
= The lap belt must be routed as low down
across the hips as possible.
In addition, push the lap belt down as far as
possible across your hips and pull tight with the shoulder belt strap. Never route the lap
belt across your abdomen.
Pregnant women must also take particular
care with this.
= The shoulder belt strap and lap belt must Nt
snugly against the body aser being tightened.
= Avoid wearing bulky clothing, e.g. a winter
coat.
= Never route the seat belt across sharp, poin-
ted, abrasive or fragile objects.
= Only one person should use each seat belt at
any one time.46Occupant safety

=Never secure objects with a seat belt if the
seat belt is also being used by one of the vehi-
cle\bs occupants.
Also ensure that no objects, e.g. a cushion,
are ever placed between a person and the seat.
Fastening and adjusting seat belts
If the seat belt is pulled quickly or sharply, the
seat belt retractor locks. The seat belt strap can-
not be pulled out any further.
Vehicles with illuminated design seat belt buckles: the illumination on the seat belt buckle does not
indicate that the seat belt buckle is functioning correctly.
Always engage seat belt tongue 1 of the seat
belt into seat belt buckle 2 of the corre-
sponding seat.To adjust the seat belt height: press button 3
on the seat belt outlet and slide the seat belt outlet to the desired position.To engage the seat belt outlet: release button
3 and ensure that the seat belt outlet
engages.*NOTE Deployment of components of the
restraint system when the front passenger
seat is unoccupied and a seat belt is
buckled
When the front passenger seat is unoccupied
and the seat belt tongue of the seat belt is
engaged in the seat belt buckle, components
of the restraint system may deploy unnecessa-
rily on the front passenger side, e.g. the Emer-
gency Tensioning Device.
Only buckle the seat belts as intended.\bObserve the information on child seat safety
feature of the seat belt (  page 70).
Function of the restraint system warning lamp
When the vehicle is switched on, a self-test is per-
formed, during which the restraint system warning lamp u lights up. It goes out no later than a
few seconds aser the vehicle is started. The com-
ponents of the restraint system are then func-
tional.
Occupant safety47

A malfunction has occurred in the restraint sys-tem if:
= the restraint system warning lamp u does
not light up when the vehicle is switched on
= the restraint system warning lamp u lights
up continuously or repeatedly during a journey
If components of the restraint system have been
deployed, the restraint system warning lamp u
lights up continuously.&WARNING Risk of injury due to malfunc-
tions in the restraint system
Components in the restraint system may be activated unintentionally or not deploy as plan-
ned in an accident.
Have the restraint system checked and
repaired immediately at a qualiNed spe-
cialist workshop.
If the restraint system is malfunctioning, the auto-
matic high voltage emergency shutoM may not
function.
&DANGER Risk of fatal injuries due to mal-
functions of the automatic high-voltage
emergency shutoM
In the event of an accident, the high-voltage
on-board electrical system may not be deacti-
vated as intended.
You may be electrocuted if you touch the dam-
aged component parts of the high-voltage on-
board electrical system.
Have the automatic high-voltage emer-
gency shutoM checked and repaired
immediately at a qualiNed specialist
workshop.Aser an accident, switch oM the vehicle
immediately.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the
vehicle towed to a qualiNed specialist workshop.
