Optimum use of 3-zone automatic cli-
mate control The following contains instructions and recom-
mendations to enable you to get the most out of
your 3-zone automatic climate control. R
Activate climate control using the X and
Z buttons. The indicator lamps above the
X and Z buttons light up.R
In automatic mode, you can also use the

Switching on/off X
To activate: press the Z or V button.
The indicator lamp in the Z or V button

The indicator lamp in the Z or V button
goes out. The "Coolin g wit h air dehum idif ica-
tion" function has a delayed swit ch-off fea-

Setting climate control to automatic
General notes In automatic mode, the set temperature is main-
tained automatically at a constant level. The
system automatically regulates the temperature
of the dispensed air, the airflow and the air dis-
tribution.
The "Cooling with air dehumidification" function
is activated automatically in automatic mode.
In the rear compartment, you can also switch
climate control for the rear seats to automatic
mode using the X button.
Automatic control X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2 in the ignition
lock ( Y

Set the desired temperature. X
To activate: press the X button.
The indicator lamp in the X button lights
up. Automatic air distribution and airflow are
activated. X

Problems with the rear window defroster Problem

The rear window
defroster has deactiva-

not be activated. The battery has not been sufficiently charged. X
Switch off any consumers that are not required, e.g. reading lamps,
interior lighting or the seat heating.
When the battery is sufficiently charged, the rear window defroster
can be activated again.
Switching air-recirculation mode
on/off
General notes You can deactivate the flow of fresh air if
unpleasant odors are entering the vehicle from
outside. The air already inside the vehicle will
then be recirculated.
If you switch on air-recirculation mode, the win-
dows can fog up more quickly, in particular at
low temperatures. Only use air-recirculation
mode briefly to prevent the windows from fog-
ging up.
Switching on/off X
Turn the SmartKey to position 2 in the ignition
lock ( Y

Setting the departure time You can set the departure time using the on-
board computer or via the online access to the
vehicle. The activation of the "Pre-entry climate
control at departure time" function can be linked
to this departure time. Your vehicle will then be
cooled or heated until the desired temperature
is reached in time for the set departure time.
"Pre-entry climate control at departure time" will
be activated a maximum of 55 minutes before
departure. If the departure is delayed, the vehi-
cle will be heated or cooled for another five
minutes. X
To set the departure time: set the departure
time using the on-board computer
( Y
page 274). Set the departure time via the
online access to the vehicle ( Y
page 178).X
To activate or deactivate "Pre-entry cli-
mate control at departure time": activate
or deactivate "Pre-entry climate control at
departure time" using the on-board com-
puter. Activate or deactivate "Pre-entry cli-
mate control at departure time" via the online
access to the vehicle ( Y
page 178).
The "Pre-entry climate control at departure
time" function switches off automatically when
the vehicle is started. The following functions
remain active: R
Seat heating R
Seat ventilation R
Ionization
To deactivate "Pre-entry climate control at
departure time": the activated "Pre-entry cli-
mate control at departure time" can be deacti-
vated using the button ( Y
page 141).
Activating/deactivating "Immediate
pre-entry climate control" via the but-
ton You can activate "Immediate pre-entry climate
control" even if the vehicle interior is already at
the desired temperature. This means, for exam-
ple, that the vehicle interior continues to be
cooled or heated if the journey is interrupted for
up to 50 minutes and the interior temperature is
kept constant. X
To activate or deactivate "Immediate pre-
entry climate control": press button C .
The blue or red indicator lamp in the button
lights up or goes out.
The colors of the indicator lamps on button C
have the following meanings: R
blue: cooling activated R
red: heating activated R
yellow: departure time is preselected
Setting the air vents
Important safety notes
G WARNING
Very hot or very cold air can flow from the air
vents. This could result in burns or frostbite in
the immediate vicinity of the air vents. There
is a risk of injury.
Make sure that all vehicle occupants always
maintain a sufficient distance to the air out-
lets. If necessary, redirect the airflow to
another area of the vehicle interior.
In order to ensure the direct flow of fresh air
through the air vents into the vehicle interior,
please observe the following notes: R
keep the air inlet grille on the hood and in the
engine compartment on the front-passenger
side free of blockages, such as ice, snow or
leaves. R
never cover the air vents or air intake grilles in
the vehicle interior.
i For virtually draft-free ventilation, adjust the
sliders of the air vents to the center position.Setting the air vents 141

G WARNING
If you switch off the ignition while driving,
safety-relevant functions are only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could affect,
for example, the power steering and the brake
boosting effect. You will require considerably
more effort to steer and brake. There is a risk
of an accident.
Do not switch off the ignition while driving.
G WARNING
If the parking brake has not been fully
released when driving, the parking brake can: R
overheat and cause a fire R
lose its hold function.
There is a risk of fire and an accident. Release
the parking brake fully before driving off.
! Do not warm up the engine with the vehicle
stationary. Drive off immediately. Avoid high
engine speeds and driving at full throttle until
the engine has reached its operating temper-
ature.
Only shift the automatic transmission to the
desired drive position when the vehicle is sta-
tionary.
Where possible, avoid spinning the drive
wheels when pulling away on slippery roads.
You could otherwise damage the drive train.
! Mercedes-AMG vehicles: at low engine oil
temperatures below 68 ‡ (+20 †), the max-
imum engine speed is restricted in order to
protect the engine. To protect the engine and
maintain smooth engine operation, avoid driv-
ing at full throttle when the engine is cold.
Observe the important safety notes for PLUG-IN
HYBRID vehicles ( Y

To start the engine
As soon as the ignition is switched on, all the
indicator lamps in the instrument cluster light
up. Further information on situations where an
indicator lamp either fails to go out after starting
the engine or lights up while driving
( Y
page 317).
If the SmartKey is in position 0 in the ignition
lock for an extended period of time, it can no
longer be turned in the ignition lock. The steer-
ing is then locked. To unlock, remove the Smart-
Key and reinsert it into the ignition lock.
The steering is locked when you remove the
SmartKey from the ignition lock. X
Remove the SmartKey when the engine is
switched off.
The starter battery could otherwise be dis-
charged.
If you cannot turn the SmartKey in the ignition
lock, the starter battery may not be charged
sufficiently. X
Check the starter battery and charge it if nec-
essary ( Y
page 377).

Jump-start the vehicle ( Y

function and a detachable Start/Sto p button.
A chec k whic h periodically establishes a radi o
connection between th e vehicl e and th e Smart -
Key determine s whether a valid SmartKey is in
th e vehicle. This occurs, for example, when
starting th e engine.
Whe n you insert th e Start/Sto p butto n int o th e
ignition lock, th e system needs approximately
two seconds recognition time. You can then use
th e Start/Sto p button.
Pressing th e Start/Sto p butto n several times in
succession corresponds to th e differen t ke y
position s in th e ignition lock. This is only th e
cas e if you are no t depressing th e brak e pedal .
If you depress th e brak e pedal and press th e
Start/Sto p button, th e engin e start s immedi-
ately.

Removing the Start/Stop button You can remove the Start/Stop button from the
ignition lock and start the vehicle as normal
using the SmartKey.
It is only possible to switch between KEYLESS-
GO mode and SmartKey operation when the
transmission is in position P .X
Remove Start/Stop button C from ignition

You do not have to remove the Start/Stop but-
ton from the ignition lock when you leave the
vehicle. You should, however, always take the
SmartKey with you when leaving the vehicle. As
long as the SmartKey is in the vehicle: R

open the doors, thus endangering other

There is a risk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children. G WARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Inhaling
these exhaust gases leads to poisoning. There
is a risk of fatal injury. Therefore never leave
the engine running in enclosed spaces with-
out sufficient ventilation.
G WARNING
Flammable materials introduced through
environmental influence or by animals can
ignite if in contact with the exhaust system or
parts of the engine that heat up. There is a risk
of fire.
Carry out regular checks to make sure that
there are no flammable foreign materials in
the engine compartment or in the exhaust
system.
! Do not depress the accelerator when start-
ing the engine.
General notes Vehicles with a gasoline engine: the catalytic
converter is preheated for up to 30 seconds
after a cold start. The sound of the engine may
change during this time.

the starter motor. The on-board voltage is too low because the battery is too weak or

If the engine does not start despite attempts to jump-start it: X
Consult a qualified specialist workshop.
The starter motor was exposed to a thermal load that was too high. X
Allow the starter motor to cool down for approximately two minutes. X
Try to start the engine again.
If the engine still does not start: X
Consult a qualified specialist workshop.
Vehicles with a gasoline
engine:
The engine is not running
smoothly and is misfir-
ing. There is a malfunction in the engine electronics or in a mechanical
component of the engine management system. X
Only depress the accelerator pedal slightly.
Otherwise, non-combusted fuel may get into the catalytic converter
and damage it. X
Have the cause rectified immediately at a qualified specialist work-
shop.
The coolant temperature
gage shows a value
above 248 ‡ (120 †). The coolant level is too low. The coolant is too hot and the engine is no
longer being cooled sufficiently. X
Stop as soon as possible and allow the engine and the coolant to
cool down. X
Check the coolant level ( Y
page 359). Observe the warning notes
as you do so and add coolant if necessary.
