cylinder. Disconnect parking brake cable end, and remove cable
attaching bolts. Remove brake backing plate, bearing case and axle
shaft as an assembly. If axle shaft binds, use slide hammer with
puller to remove.
2) Remove shims, "O" ring and snap ring. Retain shims for
reassembly. Secure axle shaft assembly in a vise, and remove one
retainer bolt from backing plate. Push bearing case completely to side
of dust cover. Place adhesive tape around edge of bearing case at
retainer bolt hole to prevent damage.
3) Secure axle shaft, and grind retainer ring until retainer
ring wall thickness is .04-.06" (1.0-1.5 mm) on axle shaft side and
retainer ring wall thickness is .08" (2.0 mm) on bearing side. See
Fig. 11.
CAUTION: DO NOT damage bearing case or axle shaft when grinding or
chiseling retainer ring.
4) Change angle of grind, and remove remaining .08" (2.0 mm)\
of retainer ring wall on bearing side. See Fig. 11. Using a chisel,
cut retainer ring, and remove. DO NOT damage axle shaft.

5) Install Puller (MB990787-01) to remove bearing case from
axle shaft. Rotate nuts with equal force to remove wheel bearing.

1990-92 DRIVE AXLES
Differentials & Axle Shafts - Front
Montero, Pickup 4WD
DESCRIPTION
Front axle assembly consists of differential carrier, housing
tube, inner shaft and drive axles. A full-floating axle design is
used. Drive axles are flexible assemblies made up of inner and outer
CV joints. Birfield Joints (BJ) and Double Offset Joints (DOJ) are
used at opposite ends of each drive axle.
AXLE RATIO & IDENTIFICATION
Ratio is determined by dividing number of ring gear teeth by
number of drive pinion teeth.

TESTING
TOTAL ASSEMBLY BACKLASH
Place transfer case in "4H" position. Raise and support
vehicle. Check total backlash at flange. If backlash at flange exceeds
.55" (14.0 mm), check assembly for wear and proper adjustment.
DRIVE AXLES R & I
REMOVAL
1) Remove undercover on Montero. Place hub in free-wheeling
position. Place transfer case in 2H position. Remove drive hub cover,
snap ring and shim from drive axle. Remove brake calipers and wire out
of way.
2) Using dial indicator, check drive axle end play. Rotate
drive axle forward and rearward until maximum end play is obtained.
End play must be adjusted during reassembly if not within .008-.020"
(.20-.50 mm). Disconnect tie rod assembly. Support lower control arm
with jack.
3) Separate ball joints from knuckle. Remove knuckle and
front hub assembly. Remove left drive axle from differential carrier.
Use care not to damage oil seal. On right drive axle, remove drive
axle-to-inner shaft retaining bolts. Remove right drive axle.
CAUTION: Support lower control arm during drive axle removal and
installation.

TESTING & INSPECTION
AXLE SHAFT END PLAY
Using dial indicator, check axle shaft end play. End play
must be .0020-.0079" (.05-.20 mm). If end play is not within
specification, change shims to obtain correct end play. See AXLE
SHAFTS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
AXLE TOTAL BACKLASH
1) Raise and support rear axle. Place transmission in
Neutral. Apply parking brake. Rotate drive shaft clockwise. Place
reference marks on pinion dust cover and differential housing.
2) Rotate drive shaft counterclockwise and measure distance
between reference marks. Differential must be removed and backlash
adjusted if distance exceeds 0.2" (5.0 mm).
LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL PRELOAD
1) Place transmission in Neutral. Block front wheels. Raise
one rear wheel free of ground and remove wheel. Use Axle Puller
Adapter (MB990241) for Montero and Pickup models. Install adapter on
wheel studs. Release parking brake.
2) Using torque wrench, measure starting torque on Pickup
models while rotating wheel in forward direction. On Montero models,
measure rotating torque. This measurement is read once axle is
turning. Differential must be repaired if torque is less than
specification. See TESTING SPECIFICATIONS table.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
AXLE SHAFTS
Removal
1) Block front wheels. Raise and support rear axle housing.
Remove brake drum. See Fig. 1. Remove parking brake cable attaching
bolts. Remove connection for parking brake cable end and rear brake
assembly. Drain brake fluid from bleeder screw at left side of rear
brake and disconnect brake tubes.
2) On all models, remove flange nuts and rear axle shaft
assembly. Use Puller (MB990241) and Slide Hammer (MB990211) if
necessary. DO NOT damage oil seal. Remove shim(s) and "O" ring.
Replace if necessary.
