CAUTION:
. Besure tocarry theIntelligent Keywith you
when operating thevehicle.
. Never leavetheIntelligent Keyinside the
vehicle whenyouleave thevehicle. .
Ifthe vehicle battery isdischarged, the
ignition switchcannot beswitched from
the ªLOCKº position, andifthe steering lock
is engaged, thesteering wheelcannot be
moved. Chargethebattery assoon as

When theignition switchcannot beswitched tothe

1. ªShift toParkº warning appears onthe vehicle
information displayandachime sounds.
2. Move theshift lever tothe ªPº (Park) position.
3. Push theignition switch.Theignition switchis
switched tothe ªOFFº position.
4. Open thedoor. Theignition switchturnstothe
ªL OCKº position.
For warnings andindicators onthe vehicle information
display ,see ªVehicle information displayº(P.2-20) .
If the ignition switchisswitched tothe ªLOCKº
position, theshift lever cannot bemoved fromtheªPº
(Park) position. Theshift lever canbemoved ifthe
ignition switchisin the ªONº position withthefoot
brake pedaldepressed.

1. Apply theparking brake.
2. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
model:
Move theshift lever tothe ªPº (Park) orthe ªNº
(Neutral) position.
The starter isdesigned tooperate onlywhen
the shift lever isin the proper position.
Manual Transmission (MT)model:
Move theshift lever tothe ªNº (Neutral) position.
The starter isdesigned tonot operate unless
the clutch pedalisfully depressed.
The Intelligent Keymust becarried when
operating theignition switch.
3. Place theignition switchinthe ªONº position.
Depress thebrake pedal(CVTmodel) orthe
clutch pedal(MTmodel) andpush theignition
switch tostart theengine.
For diesel engine models: Wait until theglow
indicator light
goes out.
T o start theengine immediately ,push andrelease
the ignition switchwhiledepressing thebrake
pedal orclutch pedalwiththeignition switchin
any position.
4. Immediately releasetheignition switchwhenthe
engine starts.Ifthe engine starts,butfails torun,
repeat theabove procedures.
If the engine isvery hard tostart inextremely cold
or hot weather, depresstheaccelerator pedaland
hold it.Push theignition switchforupto15
seconds whileholding. Release theaccelerator
pedal whentheengine starts.
CAUTION:
. Assoon asthe engine hasstarted, release
the ignition switchimmediately.
. Donot operate thestarter formore than15
seconds atatime. Ifthe engine doesnot
start, place theignition switchinthe ªOFFº
position andwait 10seconds beforecrank-
ing the engine again.Otherwise, thestarter
could bedamaged.
. Ifitbecomes necessary tostart theengine
with abooster batteryandjumper cables,
the instructions andcautions contained in
the ª6.Incase ofemergencyº sectionshould
be carefully followed.
5. Allow theengine toidle foratleast 30seconds
after starting theengine towarm-up. Driveat
moderate speedsforashort distance first,
especially incold weather.
CAUTION:
Do not leave thevehicle unattended whilethe
engine iswarming up.
6. To stop theengine, movetheshift lever tothe ªPº
(Park) position (CVTmodel) ormove theshift lever
to the ªNº (Neutral) position(MTmodel) ,apply the
parking brakeandplace theignition switchinthe
ªOFFº position.
