cates that the handbrake is still on orhas not been properly released.
Operating abnormality Any operating abnormality is indica- ted by an audible signal accompa-nied by the message "Automatic
gearbox faulty" on the multi-func-
tion display and flashing of the Sportand Snow warning lights on the ins-trument panel. In this situation the gearbox operates in downgrade mode (locked in 3rd
gear). You may feel a substantialknock when changing from Pto R
and from Nto R(this will not cause
any damage to the gearbox). Do not exceed 60 mph (100 km/h), speed restrictions permitting.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible. Illumination of this warninglight comes on, accompa-nied by an audible signaland the message
"Braking
fault" , indicates that there is
a malfunction of the electronic brakeforce distribution, which can cause aloss of control of the vehicle whenbraking.
Stop immediately.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.
HANDBRAKE Locking Pull the handbrake to immobilise your vehicle.
Warning:
when parking on a slope,
direct your wheels towards the pave- ment and pull the handbrake.
ABS ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM
The ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) increases thestability and manoevrability of yourvehicle, particularly on poor or slip-pery road surfaces. Note: when changing wheels (tyres
and rims), make sure that these are approved. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically whenthere is a risk of wheel lock.

If the battery is flat and the lever is in position
P, it
will be impossible tochange to another posi-tion.
Normal operation of the ABS may make itself felt by slight vibrationsof the brake pedal. In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasingthe pressure.
EMERGENCY BRAKING
ASSISTANCE SYSTEM
In an emergency, this system enables the optimum braking pressure to be
reached more quickly, thus reducingthe stopping distance. It is triggered by the speed at which the
brake pedal is activated, the effect ofwhich is a reduction in the resistance ofthe pedal and an increase in braking
efficiency.

TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)*
AND DYNAMIC STABILITY
CONTROL (ESP)* These systems are linked and com-
plement the ABS system.
The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, byacting on the brakes and the engine. It also allows the directional stabilityof the vehicle to be improved onacceleration. If there is a variation between the tra- jectory followed by the vehicle and
that required by the driver, the ESPsystem automatically acts on theengine and the brake of one or morewheels, in order to put the vehicleback on course.
Operation of the ASR and
ESP systemsWhen one of these two sys- tems is operating, this lightflashes.
* During the year Disarming the ESP / ASR systems In certain conditions (vehicle stuck in
mud or snow, or on loose ground...),it could prove useful to disarm theASR system to make the wheelsspin and regain grip.
Press the switch "ESP OFF",
situated on the central part of the fascia.
The switch lights up and theindicator light comes on;the
ESP and ASR systems nolonger act on the brake andengine operation.
They engage again: automatically when the ignition is
switched off,
manually by pressing the switchagain. Operating check
When a malfunction of thesystem occurs, the switchlight flashes and the indica-tor light comes on, accom-panied by an audible signal
and the message "ESP/ASR not
operational" on the multifunction
display.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked.
YOUR 307 IN DETAIL 89
The ESP system offers increased safety duringnormal driving, but shouldnot incite the driver totake risks or to drive at
high speed. The operation of the system is ensured to the extent to which therecommendations of the manufac-turer regarding the wheels (tyresand wheel rims), the braking com-ponents, the electronic compo-nents and the assembly andrepair procedures within the PEUGEOT network are observed. After an impact, have the system
checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.

CRUISE CONTROL* Cruise control enables the vehicle to maintain a steady speed program-
med by the driver, regardless of theroad characteristics and without thedriver having to touch the acceleratoror brake pedals. In order for it to be memorised, the vehicle speed must be greater thanapproximately 25 mph (40 km/h).
* According to specification Operation
Place switch 1in the ONposition.
A speed can be memorised. Illumination of this indicator light confirms that the cruise control isactivated. Place switch 1in the OFFposi-
tion to deactivate.
Memorising a speed As soon as you reach the chosen speed, press button 2or 3.
This memorises the speed, which
will be maintained automatically. Note: It is possible to accelerate
momentarily without deactivating the cruise control. Cancelling the memorised speed If you wish to cancel the memorised speed: Press button 4or the brake or
clutch pedal.
The indicator light goes out, confir- ming that the cruise control is deacti-vated. Recalling the memorised speed After cancellation, press button
4.
Your vehicle will return to the last memorised speed. Illumination of the indicator light confirms that the cruise control isactivated again. Changing a memorised speed
To memorise a speed higher than the previous one: press button 3;
release it when you have rea- ched the required speed.
To memorise a speed lower than theprevious one: press button 2;

AIR BAGS The air bags have been designed to maximise the safety of the occupantsin the event of serious collisions;they work in conjunction with theforce-limiting seat belts. In the event of a serious collision, the electronic detectors record and ana-lyse any abrupt deceleration of thevehicle: if the triggering threshold isreached, the air bags inflate instantlyand protect the occupants of thevehicle. Immediately after the impact, the air
bags deflate rapidly, so that they donot hinder the visibility nor the pos-sible exit of the occupants from thevehicle. The air bags will not be deployed in collisions which are not serious, for
which the seat belt is sufficient to
provide maximum protection. Theseriousness of the collision dependson the nature of the obstacle and thespeed of the vehicle at the momentof impact. Air bags operate only when the ignition is switched on. Note:
the gas escaping from the air
bags can be a minor irritant. FRONT AIR BAGS These are folded in the centre of the steering wheel for the driver and in
the fascia for the front passenger.
They are deployed simultaneously, except in cases where the air bag isdisarmed. Front air bag malfunction
If this warning light comes on, accompanied by a buzzer and the message"Air bag fault" on the multi-
function display, contact a
PEUGEOT dealer to have the sys-tem checked. Disarming the passenger airbag*
To ensure the safety of your child, it is essential to disarm the pas-senger airbag when you install arear-facing child seat on the frontpassenger seat.
With the ignition switched off, insert the key into the passengerair bag disarming slot 1turn it to
the "OFF" position, then remove
it keeping it in this position.
The airbag warning light on the instru-ment panel is lit throughout the disar-ming process.

"OFF" position the passenger
airbag will not be deployed in an impact. As soon as the child seat is remo- ved, turn the air bag slot to the "ON"
position to re-activate the air bag andthus ensure the safety of your pas-senger in the event of an impact.
Operating check This is confirmed by an indicator light, accompanied by an audiblesignal and a message on the multi-
function display. With the ignition on (2ndnotch), illumination of thiswarning light, accompaniedby an audible signal and themessage "Passenger air
bag disarmed" on the multifunction
display, indicates that the passengerair bag is disarmed (slot in the"OFF" position). SIDE AIRBAGS* AND
CURTAIN AIRBAGS* The side airbags are incorporated into the front seat backs on the doorside. The curtain airbags are incorporated into the door pillars and the upperpart of the passenger compartment. They are deployed independently of each other depending on which sidethe collision occurs. Operating check This is confirmed by an indicator light, accompanied by an audiblesignal and a message on the multi-
function display.
If this indicator light comeson, accompanied by anaudible signal and the mes-sage "Air bag(s) faulty" on
the multifunction display,

For the front and side airbags* to be fully effective, observe the following safety rules:
¥
Wear a correctly adjusted seat belt.
¥ Sit in a normal upright position (passengers must not place their feet on the ifascia).
¥ Do not leave any accessories, objects or pets between the occupants and the air bags. It could hamper the operation of the air bags or injure the occupants.
¥ All work on the air bag system is strictly forbidden unless it is carried out by an approved PEUGEOT dealer.
¥ After an accident or if the vehicle has been stolen or broken into, have the airbag systems checked.
¥ The air bag systems have been designed to be fully operational for 10 years from the date of registration of thevehicle. Have them replaced by a PEUGEOT dealer after this period.
Front airbags
¥ Do not drive holding the steering wheel by its spokes or resting your hands on the centre part of the wheel.
¥ Smoke as little as possible; deployment of the airbags can cause burns or the risk of injury from a cigarette or pipe.
¥ Never remove or pierce the steering wheel or hit it violently.
Side airbags*
¥ Only put approved covers on the seats. Contact your PEUGEOT dealer. ¥ Do not fix or glue anything to the backs of the front seats. This could cause injury to the chest or arms when the side air bag inflates.
¥ Do not sit with the upper part of the body any nearer to the door than necessary.
Curtain air bags*
¥ Do not fasten or glue anything to the door pillars or to the roof as this could cause head injuries when the curtain airbag inflates.
¥ Do not remove the bolts from the handles on the roof; they help to secure the curtain air bags.
