When the lighting reaches the mini-mum (or maximum) setting, release thebutton then press it again to increase(or reduce) the brightness. As soon as the lighting is of the required brightness, release the button.
Trip recorder zero reset With the ignition on, press the button.
Instrument panel display After switching on the ignition, three functions are shown in succession:
Ð service indicator (see corresponding section),
Ð engine oil level indicator,
Ð total distance recorder (total and trip distances).Note:
the total and trip distances are displayed for 30 seconds when the ignition
is switched off, on opening the driver's door, as well as on locking and unlocking the vehicle. Engine oil level indicator When the ignition is switched on, the engine oil level is indicated for approxi- mately 10 seconds, after the servicing information.
Surplus oil Flashing indicates a surplus of oil which can cause damage to the engine. If the surplus of oil is confirmed by checking using the dipstick,
contact a PEUGEOT dealer without delay. No oil Flashing indicates a lack of oil which can cause damage to the engine. If the lack of oil is confirmed by checking using the dipstick, it is essential to top up the level. Oil level gauge fault Check the oil level using the dipstick. If the level is correct, the flashing indicates a true engine oil level gauge fault.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.
INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS
34
The value obtained by checking the level using the dipstick is only correct if the vehicle has been on level ground, with the engine off, for more than 10 min
utes.

OPENING THE BONNET From inside:
push the handle on the
left-hand side under the fascia. From outside: lift the catch and
raise the bonnet. Bonnet strut Secure the strut to hold the bonnet open. Before closing the bonnet, replace the strut in its housing.
To close Lower the bonnet and release it at the end of its travel. Check that thebonnet is properly locked. "Bonnet open" warning With the engine running or the vehi- cle moving, flashing of the central
"STOP"
warning light accompanied
by an audible signal and a diagram
on the multi-function display, warnsyou that the bonnet is not properlyclosed. FILLING WITH FUEL Low fuel level
When the minimum fuel level in the tank isreached, this warninglight comes on.
You can still drive approximately30 miles (50 km). Flashing of the warning light indi-cates a malfunction of the fuelgauge.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer. The engine must be switched off when filling with fuel.
Open the fuel filler flap.
Insert the key then turn it to the left.
Remove the cap and hang it onthe hook located on the inside ofthe flap.
A label affixed to the inside of the fuelfiller flap indicates which type of fuelto use. When you fill your tank, do not con-
tinue after the third cut-off of the
pump. This could cause your vehicleto malfunction. The capacity of the tank is approxi- mately 60 litres. After filling the tank, lock the cap and close the fuel filler flap.

TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)
AND DYNAMIC STABILITY
CONTROL (ESP) These systems are linked and com-
plement the ABS.
The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, by act-ing on the brakes of the drive wheelsand on the engine. It also allows thedirectional stability of the vehicle tobe improved on acceleration. If there is a variation between the tra- jectory followed by the vehicle and
that required by the driver, the ESPsystem automatically acts on theengine and the brake of one or morewheels, in order to put the vehicleback on course.Disarming the ASR/ESP systems In exceptional conditions (starting a vehicle which is bogged down, stuck
in snow, on soft ground, ...), it may
be advisable to disarm the ASR and
ESP systems, so that the wheels canmove freely and regain grip.
Press the "ESP OFF" switch,
located on the central section of the fascia.
The switch lights up and thewarning light comes on: the
ASR and ESP systems aredisarmed.
These are triggered again: automatically if the ignition is
switched off,
 automatically above 30 mph
(50 km/h),
 manually by pressing the switchagain.
Operation of the ASR and
ESP systems
The warning light flashes if
the ASR or ESP is activated.Operating check
When a malfunction of the systems occurs, the switchlight flashes and the warninglight comes on, accompa-nied by an audible signal
and the message "ESP/ASR not
functioning" on the multifunction
display.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked.
The ESP/ASR systems offer exceptional safety innormal driving, but thisshould not encourage thedriver to take extra risks or
drive at high speed. The correct functioning of these systems depends on observationof the manufacturer's recommen-dations regarding the wheels (tyresand rims), the braking components, the electronic components, and thePEUGEOT assembly and opera-tion procedures. After an impact, have the system
checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.

BATTERY
To charge the battery using a battery charger:
Ð Disconnect the battery,
Ð Follow the instructions for use given by the battery charger manufacturer,
Ð Reconnect starting with the negative (Ð) terminal,
Ð Check that the terminals and connectors are clean. If they are covered with sul-
phate (white or greenish deposit), disconnect them and clean them.
To start the vehicle from another battery:
Ð Connect the red cable to the positive (+) terminals of the two batteries,
Ð Connect one end of the green or black cable to the negative (Ð) terminal of the slave battery,
Ð Connect the other end of the green or black cable to an earth point on the bro- ken down vehicle as far as possible from the battery,
Operate the starter, let the engine run.
Wait for the engine to return to idle, then disconnect the cables.
It is advisable to disconnect the battery if the vehicle is not to be used for a period of more than one month.Ð Before disconnectingthe battery, you must wait for 2 minutes afterswitching off the ignition.
Ð Never disconnect a terminal when the engine is running.
Ð Never charge a battery without first disconnecting the terminals.
Ð
Close the windows and retractableroof before disconnecting the bat-
tery. If the windows do not operatenormally following reconnection of
the battery, they must be reini-tialised (see section "Reinitialisationof the electric windows)
.
Ð After every reconnection of the battery, switch on the ignition andwait 1 minute before starting toallow the electronic systems tobe initialised. If slight difficultiesare experienced after this, please contact a PEUGEOT
dealer.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION145
TOWING A TRAILER,
CARAVAN, BOAT etc.
Only use original PEUGEOT tow bars that have been tested andapproved from the design stage ofyour vehicle. The tow bar must be fitted by a
PEUGEOT dealer.
Your vehicle is primarily designed for transporting people and luggagebut it may also be used for towing a
trailer. Driving with a trailer subjects the towing vehicle to more significantstress and its driver must be particu-larly careful. Air density decreases with altitude, thus reducing engine performance.Above 1 000 metres, the maximumtowing load must be reduced by
10 % and so on for every
1 000 metres of altitude. The rear parking assistance function will be disarmed automatically whena towbar is fitted.Driving advice Distribution of loads:
Distribute the
load in the trailer so that the heaviest items are as close as possible to theaxle and the nose weight approach-es the maximum permitted withoutexceeding it. Cooling: towing a trailer on a slope
increases the temperature of the coolant. As the fan is electrically controlled, its cooling capacity is not dependenton the engine speed.
On the contrary, use a high gear to lower the engine speed and reduceyour speed. The maximum towing load on a long slope depends on the gradient andthe outside temperature. In all cases, pay attention to the coolant temperature. If the warning light comes on, stop
the vehicle and switch off the engineas soon as possible. Tyres:
check the tyre pressures of
the towing vehicle and of the trailer, observing the recommended pres-sures. Braking: towing increases the braking
distance.Lights: check the electrical sig-
nalling on the trailer.Side winds: take into acount the
increased sensitivity to side wind.
