ADJUSTMENT
HINT:
Because a centering bolt is used as a luggage compartment
door mounting bolt, the luggage compartment door can not be
adjusted with it on. Substitute a bolt with a washer for the cen-
tering bolt.
1. INSPECT LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT DOOR PANEL SUB±ASSY
(a) Check that the clearance is within the standard range.
Standard range:
A4.0  1.5 mm (0.157  0.059 in.)
B5.3  1.5 mm (0.209  0.059 in.)
C7.1 ± 1.5 or + 2.5 mm
(0.280 ± 0.059 or + 0.098 in.)
2. ADJUST LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT DOOR PANEL
SUB±ASSY
(a) Using a clip remover, remove the clips and hinge cover.
(b) Using a clip remover, remove the 11 clips and trim cover.
(c) Adjust the door horizontally and vertically by Loosening
the door bolts.
(d) Tighten the door mounting bolts after the adjustment.
Torque: 7.0 Nm (71 kgfcm, 62 in.lbf)

(e) Adjust the striker.
HINT:
Adjust the door lock position by moving the striker so that the
door striker can enter smoothly.
(1) Using a hammer and a brass bar, tap the striker to
adjust it.
(2) Tighten the 2 bolts after the adjustment.
Torque: 11.5 Nm (120 kgfcm, 8 ftlbf)

LUGGAGE DOOR HINGE TORSION BAR
REPLACEMENT
HINT:
The installation is in the reverse order of the removal. However, when there is a special point concern-
ing the installation, it is indicated.
Use the same procedures on the RH side as on the LH side.
After removing the torsion bar, opening and closing door operation should be carried out while holding
the door with your hand in order to perform an accurate test by providing sliding resistance.
The RH side torsion bar is on the upper side and the LH side torsion bar is on the lower side, thus the
installation should be performed in the order of RH to LH and removal should be performed in the order
of LH to RH.
1. REMOVE LUGGAGE DOOR HINGE TORSION BAR LH
(a) Remove the floor carpet.
(b) Remove the floor finish plate.
(1) Remove the 2 screws and 2 No. 2 trim hooks.
(2) Remove the 2 bolts and rope hook assy
(3) Using a clip remover, remove the 2 clips and floor
finish plate.
(c) Remove the clips and trim cover inner LH and RH.
(d) Remove the torsion bar RH from the clip placed in the cen-
ter of the upper back panel.
(e) Remove the tip of the torsion bar from the roof side inner
panel by hand.
(f) Take out the hinge arm from the torsion bar in the rear
direction.
(g) Pull the torsion bar to your side in order to remove the U±
shaped part from the hinge support.

3. INSTALL LUGGAGE DOOR HINGE TORSION BAR LH
(a) Set the tip of the torsion bar in the installation hole placed
in the center part. The holes placed in the upper and lower
parts are used for adjustment.

REPLACEMENT
1. REMOVE RADIATOR SUPPORT OPENING COVER
2. REMOVE ENGINE ROOM COVER SIDE
3. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER RH
4. REMOVE ENGINE COVER SUB±ASSY NO.1
(a) Remove the 2 nuts and the engine cover No. 1.
5. REMOVE IGNITION COIL ASSY
(a) Remove 4 bolts and the ignition coils.
6. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER SUB±ASSY
(a) Disconnect the 2 PCV hoses from the cylinder head cov-
er.
(b) Remove the 8 bolts and 2 nuts, and then remove the cylin-
der head cover and gasket.
7. SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION
(a) Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its timing notch with
timing mark 0 of the timing chain cover.

(b) Check that each timing mark of the camshaft timing gears
is aligned with each timing mark located on the No. 1 and
No. 2 bearing caps as shown in the illustration.
If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360) and align the
marks as above.
8. REMOVE CHAIN TENSIONER ASSY NO.1
(a) Remove the 2 nuts, then remove the chain tensioner and
a gasket.
NOTICE:
Do not turn the crankshaft.
9. REMOVE NO.2 CAMSHAFT
(a) Hold the No. 2 camshaft with a wrench on the hexagonal
lobe, and loosen the camshaft timing gear set bolt.
NOTICE:
Be careful not to damage the cylinder head and valve lifter
with the wrench.
(b) Using several steps, loosen and remove the 10 camshaft
bearing cap bolts uniformly in the sequence shown in the
illustration.
(c) Remove the 5 camshaft bearing caps.

(d) Raising the No. 2 camshaft, remove the set bolt.
(e) Remove the camshaft timing gear from the No. 2 cam-
shaft with the timing chain wrapped.
(f) Remove the camshaft timing gear from the timing chain.
10. REMOVE CAMSHAFT
(a) Using several steps, loosen and remove the 10 camshaft
bearing cap bolts uniformly in the sequence shown in the
illustration.
(b) Remove the 5 camshaft bearings.
(c) Remove the camshaft.
(d) Tie the timing chain as shown in the illustration.
NOTICE:
Be careful not to drop anything inside the timing
chain cover.
Do not expose the chain to water, and prevents dust.
11. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR OR SPROCKET (LEADED GASOLINE)
(a) Clamp the camshaft in a vise and remove the bolt and the camshaft timing gear.
12. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSY
(UNLEADED GASOLINE)
(a) Fix the camshaft with a vise, and make sure the camshaft
timing gear does not rotate.
(b) Cover all the oil ports with vinyl tape except an advance
side port shown in the illustration.
