The automatic air conditioning is an air
conditioning that automatically maintains the set temperature.
This air conditioning features automatic
air intake controls, fan speed and air flow controls which automatically select the
most suitable air intake control, fan speed
and air flow to control the temperature.
You may use manual controls if you desire your own way of setting.
(A) CLIMATE CONTROL Setting operation
1. Turn the temperature control knob at the desired temperature level.
The temperature control knob is used to
set the desired passenger compartment
temperature. The tem
perature of air deliv-
ered to the passenger compartment will
be controlled automatically according to
the setting. The figures on the panel indi-
cate degrees in centigrade or Fahrenheit. 2. Press in the AUTOº button.
As the AUTOº button is pressed in, the fan turns on and operates with the most
suitable air intake control, air flow (except
pressing the FLOOR/WINDSHIELD or
WINDSHIELD button) and fan speed se-lected
automatically according to the tem-
perature. In cold weather, however, the
fan will not operate until the engine cool-
ant warms up sufficiently.
3. If any of the AUTOº button functions is not necessary for your own way of set-
ting, manual control can be made on each
of the functions, leaving the rest of the
functions in operation. Operate the con-
trols as described in Manual control on air
intake, air flow and fan speedº after the
AUTOº button is pressed in.
4. Press in the air conditioning on-off but-
ton.
The air conditioning on-off button is used
to turn on and off the air conditioning.
With the button pressed in the on mode, the air conditioning turns on.
If the system is used for ventilation or
heating in dry weather, press the air con-
ditioning on-off button once again. This
turns off the air conditioning. For year-
round automatic temperature control in-
cluding cooling and dehumidifying opera-
tion, use the air conditioning. 5. Press in the OFFº button turn off thefan speed and temperature control.
Manual control on air intake, air flow
and fan speed
If manual air intake control is de- siredÐ
The air intake control button is used to se-
lect intake air, either outside air or recircu-
lated air. With the button in the OUTSIDE
AIR mode, the OUTSIDE AIR mode indi-
cator light w
ill come on and the system will
take fresh outside air into the unit.
If quick circulation of conditioned air is de- sired, press in the air intake control button
to select the RECIRCULATED AIR mode
for recirculated air. The RECIRCULATED
AIR mode indicator light will come on.
For normal use, it is best to keep the air in-
take control button for outside air. If recir-
culated air is used during heating, the win-
dows will fog up more easily.
If manual air flow selection is de- siredÐ
The air flow outlets from which air is deliv-
ered can be selected manually by press-
ing in the appropriate air flow control but-
ton. The function of each button is as follows:
FACE buttonÐThis button directs the air flow to face level.

100BI-LEVEL buttonÐThis button directs
the air flow to face level and the floor. Ex-
cept in ventilation, the air to the floor is
slightly warmer than that to face level.
FLOOR buttonÐThis button directs the
air flow mostly to the floor.
FLOOR/WINDSHIELD buttonÐThis but- ton directs the air flow to the windshield
and front side windows as well as the floor.
WINDSHIELD buttonÐThis button di-
rects the air flow to the windshield and
front side windows.
Pressing this air flow control button turns
on the air conditioning. This is to clear up
the front view more quickly.
Pressing the air conditioning on-off but-
ton in the off mode turns off the air condi- tioning.
If you push the WINDSHIELD button once
again, it returns to the last air flow button used. Do not use the WINDSHIELD button dur-
ing cooling operation in extremely humid
weather.
The difference between the tem-
perature of the outside air and that of the windshield could cause the outer surface
of the windshield to fog up blocking yourvision. If manual fan speed control is de- siredÐ
The fan speed can be fixed at your desired
speed by turning to the appropriate posi-tion of the fan speed control knob. The
higher
the fan speed is, the more air is de-
livered.
(B) WINDSHIELD DEFOGGING AND DEFROSTING
See (A) CLIMATE CONTROLº for details
on each button or lever function.
To remove interior fog on the wind- shieldÐ
1. Turn the temperature control knob for the desired temperature level.
2. Press in the AUTOº button.
3. Set the air intake control button to the OUTSIDE AIR mode.
4. Press in the WINDSHIELD button of the air flow control buttons.
To remove frost or exterior fog on the windshieldÐ
1. Turn the temperature control knob at the maximum temperature.
2. Set the air intake control button to the OUTSIDE AIR mode.
3. Press in the WINDSHIELD button of the air flow control buttons.
4. Turn the fan speed control knob at the
HIº position. 5. Press the air conditioning on-off but- ton in the OFF mode.
(C) OPERATING TIPS
Be sure the air inlet grilles in front of the
windshield are not blocked by leaves or other obstructions.
If air flow control is not satisfactory,
check the dashboard vents. (See
Dashboard ventsº or Lower ventº.)
To help cool down the interior after
parking in the hot sun, drive for the first
few minutes with the windows open.
After the excess heat has blown away,
close the windows.
When driving on dusty roads, close all
windows. If dust thrown up by the ve-
hicle is still drawn into the vehicle after
closing the windows, it is recom-
mended that the air intake control but-ton be set in the OUTSIDE AIR mode.
If following another vehicle on a dusty
road, or driving in windy and dusty con-
ditions, it is recommended that the air
intake control button be temporarily
set to select the RECIRCULATED AIR
mode, which will close off the outside
passage and prevent outside air and
dust from entering the vehicle interior.

The digital clock indicates the time
with the ignition key at the ACCº or
ONº position. To reset the hour, de-
press the
Hº button. To reset the min-
utes, depress the Mº button. To ad-
just the time to a full hour, depress the
:00º button.
For example, if the :00º button is de-
pressed when the time is between
1:01Ð1:29, the time will change to 1:00.
If the time is between 1:30Ð1:59, the time
will change to 2:00. When the instrument panel lights are turned on, the brightness of the time indi- cation will be reduced.
Once the electrical power source has
been disconnected from the clock, the
time is automatically set to 1:00 (oneo'clock).To operate the cigarette lighter, press
it in. When it becomes heated, it auto-
matically pops out ready for use.
If the engine is not running, the key must be in the ACCº position.
Do not hold the cigarette lighter pressed in. When finished with your cigarette, thor-
oughly extinguish it in the ashtray to pre-
vent other cigarette butts from catching
fire. After using the ashtray, close the ash-
tray cover completely.
To remove the ashtray, open the ashtray cover and pull it out.
Use a Toyota genuine cigarette lighter or equivalent for replacement.

To open the glovebox door, pull the
lever. To lock the glovebox door, insert
the master key and turn it clockwise.
With the instrument panel lights on, the
glovebox light w ill come on when the door
is open.
To reduce the chance of injury in
case of an accident or a sudden
stop, always keep the glovebox
door closed while driving. CAUTION
!
When you open the back door, the lug-
gage cover tilts up for easy access to the luggage area.
For additional luggage space, unhook the retractable cords and lift the cover out of the retainers.AUTOMATIC MODE
The traction control system automati-
cally controls spinning of the rear
wheels which may occur when accel-
erating on
slippery road surfaces, thus
assisting driver control and driving
power to the rear wheels. When you turn the ignition switch on, the trac-
tion control system always turns on
automatically, and the slip indicator
light and SNOWº indicator light will come on. The indicator lights will go
off after about 3 seconds.

Leave the system on during ordinary
driving so that it can operate when
needed. When traction control is ap-
plied, the slip indicator light blinks. If
your vehicle still skids even though
traction control is applied, more pow-
erful
traction control is applied and the
SNOWº indicator light comes on.
You may hear a slight clicking noise in the
engine compartment when the engine is
started. This means that the traction con-
trol system is in the self-check mode, and
does not indicate malfunction. When the
traction control system is operating, you
may feel vibration of your vehicle, causedby operation of the brakes. This indicates
the system is functioning properly.
When getting the vehicle out of mud or
new snow, etc. the traction control system
will operate to prevent the wheels from
spinning. Even though the accelerator
pedal is fully depressed, the engine speed
will be restrained to a certain level.
MANUAL SNOW OPERATION
You can select the snow mode by
pushing the SNOWº switch. The
SNOWº indicator light will come on.
To select the automatic mode, push
the OFFº switch. The SNOWº indi-cator light will go off. If your vehicle
still skids, the system automatically operates.
MANUAL TRACTION CONTROL OFF
OPERATION
You can turn off the traction control
system by pushing the OFFº switch.
The TRAC OFFº indicator/warning
light will come on. Pushing the OFFº
switch a second time turns on the trac-
tion control system and the TRAC
OFFº indicator/warning light will go off. If the SNOWº indicator light is on,
pushing the OFFº switch once se-lects the automatic mode and pushing
it a second time turns off the traction
control system.

Under certain slippery road condi-
tions, full stability of the vehicle and
power to the rear wheels cannot be
maintained, even though the trac-
tion control system is in operation.
In situations where the road surface
is covered with ice or snow, your ve-
hicle should be fitted with snow tires or tire chains and driven at amore cautious pace. CAUTION
!
Use a floor mat of the correct size.
If the floor mat has a hole, then it is de-
signed for use with a locking clip. Fix thefloor mat and locking clip into the hole in the floor carpet.
Make sure the floor mat is properly
placed on the floor carpet. If the
floor mat slips and interferes with
the movement of the pedals duringdriving, it may cause an accident.

Drive gently and avoid high speeds.
Your vehicle does not need an elaborate
break-in. But following a few simple tips
for the first 1600 km (1000 miles) can add
to the future economy and long life of your vehicle:
Do not drive over 88 km/h (55 mph).
Do not run the engine over 4000 rpm. Maintain engine speed between 2000 and 4000 rpm.
Avoid full-throttle starts.
Try to avoid hard stops during the first
300 km (200 miles).
Do not drive slowly with the manual
transmission in a high gear.
Do not drive for a long time at any
single speed, either fast or slow. FUEL TYPE
Your new vehicle must use only un-
leaded gasoline.
To help prevent gas station mixups, your
Toyota has a new smaller fuel tank open- ing.
The special nozzle on pumps with un-
leaded fuel will fit it, but the larger stan-
dard nozzle on pumps with leaded gas will
not.
NOTICE
Do not use leaded gasoline. Use of leaded gasoline will cause the
three-way catalytic converter tolose its effectiveness and the emission control system tofunction improperly. Also, this can increase maintenance costs.
OCTANE NUMBER
Select premium unleaded gasoline
with a Research Octane Number of 96
(Octane Rating 91) or higher for opti-
mum engine performance. However, if
such premium type cannot be ob-
tained, you may temporarily use un-
leaded gasoline with an octane num-ber as low as 91 (Octane Rating 87).
Use of unleaded fuel with an octane num- ber or rating lower than stated above will
cause persistent heavy knocking. If se-
vere, this will lead to engine damage.

108If your engine knocks...
If you detect heavy knocking even when
using the recommended fuel, or if you
hear steady knocking while holding a
steady sp
eed on level roads, consult your
Toyota dealer.
However, now and then, you may notice
light knocking for a short time while accel-
erating or driving up hills. This is no cause
for concern.
GASOLINES CONTAINING DETER-
GENT ADDITIVES
Toyota recommends use of gasolines
that contain detergent additives to
avoid build-up of engine deposits.
For further details, ask your Toyota dealer
or a local gasoline retailer..
GASOLINES CONTAINING MTBE
Gasolines that contain MTBE (Methyl
Tertiary-Butyl Ether) are available in
the market. If you use a gasoline mixed
with MTBE, make certain that it does
not contain more than 15% of MTBE.
If the use of gasolines containing MTBE causes poor driveability and/or poor fuel
economy, you should discontinue the use
of fuels containing MTBE. GASOLINES CONTAINING ALCOHOL I
f you use gasohol in your Toyota, be
sure that it is unleaded, has an octane
rating no lower than 87 and does not
contain more than 10% ethanol.
Gasohol is a mixture of gasoline and etha-
nol.
Toyota does not recommend the use of
gasolines containing methanol. If you use
gasoline containing methanol, use only
gasoline meeting the requirements above
and also containing less than 5% metha-
nol with cosolvents and corrosion inhibi-
tors for methanol.
NOTICE
Do not use gasohol other than
stated above. It will cause fuel
system damage or vehicle perfor-
mance problems.
If driveability problems are en-countered (poor hot starting, va-porizing, engine knock, etc.),discontinue the use.
Take care not to spill gasohol dur-
ing refueling. Gasohol may causepaint damage.
FUEL TANK CAPACITY 70 L (18.5 gal., 15.4 Imp. gal.) If you plan to drive your Toyota in
another country... First,
comply with the vehicle registration
laws. Second, confirm the availability of the
correct fuel (unleaded and minimum oc- tane number). Operation in foreign countries
