Selecting ignition modeThe vehicle's ignition can be put in various modes (levels) to make different functionsavailable.
Selecting an ignition mode
Start knob in the tunnel console.
Ignition mode 0
– Unlock the vehicle and
keep the remote key in the passenger compartment.
NOTE
To set level I or II without engine start –
do not depress the brake pedal (or clutch
pedal for vehicles with manual transmis- sion) when selecting this ignition mode.
Ignition mode I
– Turn the start knob
clockwise and release it. The control will automatically return to the original posi- tion.
Ignition mode II
– Turn the start knob
clockwise and hold it there forapprox. 5 seconds. Release the knob,which will automatically return to its origi-nal position.
Back to ignition mode 0
– To return to
ignition mode 0 from modes I and II, turn
the start knob clockwise and release it.The control will automatically return to theoriginal position.

Brake functions
The vehicle's brakes are used to reduce speed or prevent the vehicle from rolling.
In addition to the wheel brakes and parking brakes, the vehicle is also equipped with anumber of automatic brake assist functions.These systems provide assistance by e.g. thedriver not needing to depress the brake pedalat a traffic light or when starting up a hill. Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, the following brake assist functions may beincluded:

Brakes
The brake pedal is used to apply the vehicle's regular brakes, which are part of the brakesystem.
The vehicle is equipped with two brake cir- cuits. If one brake circuit is damaged, thebrake pedal will go down further whendepressed. More pressure will then berequired from the driver for normal brakingeffect. The driver's pressure on the brake pedal is enhanced by a power braking function.
WARNING
Power braking only functions if the engine is running.
If the brake pedal is used when the engine is turned off, the pedal will feel stiffer than usualand greater pressure must be applied to brakethe vehicle. In very hilly areas or when driving with a heavy load, manual gear shifting can be used to aug-ment the brakes with engine braking. Enginebraking is most effective if the same gear isused both uphill and downhill.
Anti-lock brakesThe vehicle is equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS 2
), which helps prevent
the wheels from locking and helps maintain steering control when braking. Vibrations maybe felt from the brake pedal when ABS isoperating, which is normal. After the vehicle is started, a brief test of the ABS system is automatically performed whenthe driver releases the brake pedal. An addi-tional automatic test of the system may beperformed when the vehicle is traveling at alow speed. During the test, the brake pedalmay feel as though it is pulsating.Symbols in the instrument panel

Braking on salted roads
When driving on salted roads, a layer of salt may form on the brake discs and brake pads.
This could increase stopping distance. Main- tain an extra large safety distance to the vehi-cle ahead. Make sure to also:
Apply the brakes from time to time to helpremove salt. Make sure braking does notpose a risk to any other road users.
Gently apply the brakes when you havefinished driving and before driving again.

Maintenance of the brake system
Regularly check the brake system compo- nents for wear.
To keep the vehicle as safe and reliable as possible, follow the Volvo service schedulespecified in the Warranty and MaintenanceRecords Information booklet. After replacingbrake pads and brake discs, braking effect isnot adapted until they are "broken in" by driv-ing a few hundred kilometers (miles). Com-pensate for the reduced braking effect byapplying greater pressure to the brake pedal.Volvo recommends only using brake padsapproved for your Volvo.
CAUTION
The brake system's components should be regularly checked for wear. Contact a workshop for advice on how to do this or let a workshop perform theinspection - an authorized Volvo workshopis recommended.

Parking brake
The parking brake helps keep the vehicle sta- tionary by mechanically locking two wheels.
The parking brake controls are located in the tunnel console between the seats.
When the electric parking brake is being applied, a faint sound can be heard from thebrake's electric motor. This sound can also beheard during the automatic function check ofthe parking brake. If the vehicle is stationary when the parking brake is activated, it will only be applied to therear wheels. If it is activated while the vehicleis moving, the normal brakes will be used onall four wheels. Braking will be transferred toonly the rear wheels when the vehicle isalmost stopped.

Parking on a hillAlways use the parking brake when parking on a hill.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when park- ing on an incline. Selecting a gear or put-ting the automatic transmission in P may
not be sufficient to keep the vehicle sta-tionary in all situations.
If the vehicle is pointing uphill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointing away from
the curb.
If the vehicle is pointing downhill:
Turn the front wheels so they are pointingtoward
the curb.
Heavy load uphill
Heavy loads, such as a trailer, could cause the vehicle to roll backward when the parkingbrake is released automatically on steep uphillgradients. To help avoid this, pull the controlupward while you are driving away. Releasethe control when the vehicle gains traction.

Parking brake malfunction
If you are unable to deactivate or activate the parking brake after several attempts, contactan authorized Volvo workshop.
A audible warning signal will sound if the park- ing brake is activated while the vehicle isbeing driven. If the vehicle must be parked before the prob- lem is rectified, turn the wheels as when park-ing on an incline and put the gear selector inP .
Low battery charge levelIf the battery charge level is too low, it will notbe possible to activate or deactivate the park-ing brake. Connect an auxiliary battery to thevehicle if the battery is discharged.
Replacing brake padsDue to the design of the electric parkingbrake, the rear brake pads must be replacedby a workshop. An authorized Volvo workshopis recommended.

Braking assist after a collision
In a collision in which the activation level is reached for the pyrotechnic seat belt tension-ers or airbags, or if a collision with a large ani-mal is detected, the vehicle's brakes will beautomatically activated. This function isintended to help prevent or reduce the effectsof any subsequent collision.
After a serious collision, it may no longer be possible to control and steer the vehicle. Inorder to avoid or mitigate a possible furthercollision with a vehicle or an object in the vehi-cle's path, the brake assist system is activatedautomatically to help stop the vehicle safely. If braking is not appropriate, e.g. if there is a risk of being hit by passing traffic, the drivercan override the system by depressing theaccelerator pedal. This function assumes that the brake system is intact after a collision.

Transmission
The transmission is part of the vehicle's drive- line (power transmission) between the engineand the drive wheels. The function of thetransmission is to change gears dependingon speed and power needs.
The vehicle has an 8-speed automatic trans- mission. The number of gears allows theengine's torque and power band to be effec-tively utilized. Two of the gears are overdrivegears that save fuel when driving at a constantengine speed. Manual shifting is also possible.The instrument panel shows the gear currentlyin use.

In vehicles with an automatic transmission, the system selects the gear so that drivingwill be as energy-efficient as possible. Thetransmission also has a manual mode.
The transmission is available in different ver- sions. The gear selector indicates which trans-mission the vehicle has. The various gearselectors have different functions.

The instrument panel shows which gear is cur- rently in use: P , R , N , D or M. For vehicles with the small
gear selector, P position is electric and the
gear shift pattern is instead R, N , D or M.
For manual shifting, the gear indicator in the instrument panel displays the gear currentlybeing used.
CAUTION
Check the operating temperature of the transmission to help avoid damage to anyof the drive system components. If there isa risk of overheating, a warning symbol willappear in the instrument panel and a textmessage will be displayed. Follow the rec-ommendations given.

Gear selector positions for automatic transmissions
With an automatic transmission, a suitable gear is selected automatically according tocurrent speed and power requirements.
Selecting gearsThe gear selector is a shift-by-wire selector, where shifting is done electronically instead ofmechanically. This makes shifting easier andthe gear positions more distinct.

if the ignition is switched off while
D or R
is selected.
if the driver unbuckles the seat belt andopens the driver's door while the vehicle isrunning with the gear selector in a gearother than
P.
To park a vehicle with an unbuckled seat beltand open door – end P mode by shifting to R
or D again.
The system will not automatically shift to P if
the ignition is switched off while the gearselector is in the neutral position (N). This is tomake it possible to wash the vehicle in anautomatic car wash in which the vehicle ispulled forward on rolling wheels.
Reverse - R
Select R when backing up. The vehicle must
be stationary when Reverse is selected.
Neutral - N
No gear is selected and the engine can be started. Apply the parking brake if the vehicleis stationary with the gear selector in N.
To move the gear selector from N to another
gear, the brake pedal must be depressed andthe ignition in mode II. For vehicles with the small gear selector, the engine must be run-ning.
D
drive mode
D is the normal driving gear position. The
transmission shifts up or down automatically depending on acceleration and speed. The vehicle must be stationary when the gear selector is moved from R to D.
Manual shifting mode - M

Manual shifting mode can be selected at any time during a drive. Engine braking will occurwhen the accelerator pedal is released. Select manual shifting mode by moving the gear selector sideways from D to ±. The cur- rent gear will be displayed in the instrumentpanel.

(plus) and release to shift up one gear.
Pull the gear selector backward toward

(minus) and release to shift down onegear.
Push the gear selector to the side to theend position at

ChangeTo shift one gear:
–Pull one of the paddles toward the steer- ing wheel and then release.
As long as the engine speed (rpm) is withinthe permissible range for the selected gear, agear shift will take place each time a paddle ispulled. After each gear shift, a number indicat-ing the current gear will be displayed in theinstrument panel.
Turning off Start/Stop
Manual deactivation in gear D and M
–Deactivate the paddles by pulling the right paddle ( +) toward the steering wheel and
holding it until the number of the currentgear is no longer displayed in the instru-ment panel.
> The transmission will return to gear selector position D.
On vehicles with the large gear selector, the function can only be switched off in gearselector position D.
Automatic deactivation
In gear position D, the steering wheel paddles
are deactivated after a short period of time if they are not used. The number of the currentgear will no longer be displayed in the instru-ment panel. If engine braking is currentlybeing used, the paddles will remain activeuntil engine braking stops. In gear position
M, the paddles will not acti-
vate automatically.

All Wheel Drive (AWD) *
All-wheel drive (AWD 8
), also called four-
wheel drive, means that power is distributed to all four wheels, which improves traction.
To achieve the best traction, power is auto- matically directed to the wheels that have thebest grip. The system continuously calculatesthe need for torque to the rear wheels, andcan immediately redistribute up to half of theengine's torque to the rear wheels. All-wheel drive also has a stabilizing effect at higher speeds. In normal driving conditions,most of the engine's power is directed to thefront wheels. When the vehicle is stationary,all-wheel drive is always activated in prepara-tion for maximum traction during acceleration. All-wheel drive reacts differently depending on which drive mode is selected.

Select the drive mode that is adapted to the current driving conditions. Keep in mind thatnot all drive modes are available in all situa-tions.
Available drive modesWhen the engine is started, the vehicle will be in Comfort mode and the start/stop function
will be activated. Drive mode can be changed once the vehicle is started, e.g. to
Individual
mode. Once Individual mode is selected, you
can adjust settings to personal preferences, e.g. to show the tachometer.
Comfort
Comfort is the vehicle's default mode. This
setting offers driving comfort, light steering and soft suspension. In
Comfort mode, no tachometer will be dis-
played in the instrument panel 9
.
Eco
Adapt the vehicle for more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly driving with Eco mode.
In this mode, the Start/Stop function is acti- vated and certain climate settings arereduced. When driving in
Eco mode, an ECO gauge
indicating how economical the driving is will be displayed in the instrument panel.
