markedwithanarrowonthem.Thetyre
shouldalwaysrotateinthesamedirection
throughoutitslifespan.Tyresshouldonlybe
switchedbetweenfrontandrearpositions,
neverbetweenleftandright-handsides,or
viceversa.Ifthetyreismountedincorrectly,
thecar’sbrakingcharacteristicsandcapacity
toforcerain,snowandslushoutofthewayareadverselyaffected.Tyreswiththe
greatesttreaddepthshouldalwaysbefitted
totherearofthecar(todecreasetheriskof
skidding).
Wheelsshouldbestoredlyingdownor
hangingup,andnotstandingup.

untilyoureachthestop.
–Releasethewheelfromthecable.
–Rewindupthecable(clockwise).

youmustchangeawheelinatraffickedarea.
Therearetwojackingpointsoneachsideof
thecar,centredunderthebottomofthe
doors.–Parkthecaronaneven,firmsurfacewith
noincline.
–Applytheparkingbrakeandengage1st
gear(manualgearbox)ormovethegear
selectortoP(automaticgearbox).Place
chocksoneithersideofthewheels
remainingontheground-usestonesor
woodenblocks.
–Takeoutthejack,wheelbraceandcrank,
seelocationpage153.
–Usethewheelbracetoloosethewheel
bolts½-1turn.Turnanticlockwise.

PolishingandwaxingPolishandwaxthecarwhenyoufeelthe
paintworkismatteandwhenyouwishtogive
thepaintworkextraprotection,suchas
beforewinter.
Thecardoesnotusuallyneedpolishinguntil
afteroneyear.Itcanbewaxedearlier.
Washanddrythecarthoroughlybeforeyou
beginpolishingand/orwaxing.Cleanoff
asphaltandtarstainswithwhitespirit.More
stubbornmarkscanberemovedwithfine
rubbingpastedesignedforpaintwork.Polish
firstwithapolishandthenwaxwithliquidor
solidwax.Carefullyfollowtheinstructionson
thepackage.Manypreparationscontainboth
polishandwax.
Donotpolishorwaxsurfaceswarmerthan
45°C.Cleaningdoormirrorsandfront
doorwindowswithwater-
repellentcoating(option)Neveruseproductssuchascarwax,
degreaserorthelikeonmirror/glass
surfacesasthiscouldruintheirwater-
repellingproperties.Takecarewhencleaningsoasnotto
damagetheglasssurface.
Toavoiddamagingglasssurfaceswhen
removingice,onlyuseplasticicescrapers.
Thereisnaturalwearofthewater-repellent
coating.
NOTE!Treatmentwithaspecialfinishing
agentavailablefromVolvodealersisrecom-
mendedinordertomaintainthewater-
repellentproperties.Thisshouldbeusedfirst
afterthreeyearsandtheneachyear.

damagedsurface.Thenremovethetape,
removinganypaintresidue(illustration1).
Stirtheprimerthoroughlyandapplyusing
afinebrushormatchstick(illustration2).
Whentheprimerisdry,applythesurface
coatwithabrush.
Makesurethepaintiswellstirredand
applyseveralthincoats;allowingittodry
betweencoats.
Theprocedureisthesameforscratches,
butmaskingtapecanbeusedtoprotect
undamagedpaintwork(illustration3).
Waitadayorsoandthenfinishtherepair
bypolishing.Useasoftragandapply
lappingpastesparingly.

underbodyisprotectedbyawear-resistant
anti-corrosioncompound.Members,cavities
andenclosedsectionsaresprayedwitha
thin,penetratingrustinhibitor.
Thecar’srustproofingismaintainedbydoing
thefollowing:
Keepthecarclean!Hosedownthe
underbody.Whenhighpressurewashing,
holdthenozzleatleast30cmfrom
paintedsurfaces!
Checkandrepairtherustproofing
regularly.
Thecar’srustproofingdoesnotnormally
requiretreatmentforapproximately8years.
Afterthattime,itshouldbetreatedatthree
yearintervals.Ifyourcarrequirestreatment,
consultyourVolvoworkshop.RepairIfyouwanttorepairtherustproofingyourself,
makesuretheareaiscleananddry.Hose
down,washanddrythecarthoroughly.Use
arustproofingagentinaspraycanorone
thatisintendedforbrushapplication.Therearetwodifferenttypesofrustproofing
agents:
thin(colourless),forvisibleareas
thick,forareaspronetowearonthe
underbody
Possiblerepairareaswiththeseagents:
Visibleweldsandsheetmetaljoints;thin
fluid
Underbody;thickfluid
Doorhinges;thinfluid
Bonnethingesandcatch-thinfluid.
Onceyouhavefinishedtreatment,excess
rustproofingcanbewipedoffwitharag
dippedinarecommendedcleaningagent.
Partsoftheengineandsuspensionstrut
mountingsintheenginecompartmentare
treatedatthefactorywithawax-based,
colourlessrustproofing.Thiswithstands
normaldetergentswithoutdissolvingand
losingitsrustproofingability.
Ifyouwashtheengineusingaromatic
solvents,suchasturpentineorwhitespirit
(especiallythosethatdonotcontainemulsi-
fiers),theprotectivewaxshouldberenewed
afterwashing.YourVolvodealerhandles
suchwaxes.

connectedandtightened.
Neverdisconnectthebatterywhenthe
engineisrunning(e.g.ifreplacingthe
battery).
Neveruseaquickchargertochargethe
battery.Thebatterycablesmustbediscon-
nectedwhenchargingthebattery.
Thebatterycontainsacidthatisboth
corrosiveandtoxic.Handlethebatteryinan
environmentally-suitableway.LetyourVolvo
dealerassistyou.
CheckregularlyCheckthefollowingatregularintervals,for
example,whenrefuelling:
Coolant-Thelevelmustbebetweenthe
MINandMAXmarksontheexpansion
tank.
Engineoil-Thelevelmustbebetween
theMINandMAXmarks.
Powersteeringfluid-Thelevelmustbe
betweentheMINandMAXmarks.
Washerfluid-Thereservoirshouldbe
wellfilled.Usewasherantifreezeat
temperaturesaroundfreezing.
Brakeandclutchfluid-Thelevelmustbe
betweentheMINandMAXmarks.
LiftingthecarIfthecarisliftedwithaworkshopjack;
positionthejackwiththefrontedgeonthe
subframe.
Donotdamagethesplashguardunderthe
engine.Ensurethatthejackispositionedso
thatthecarcannotslideoff.Alwaysuseaxle
standsorthelike.
Ifyouliftthecarusingatwopillarworkshop
lift,ensurethatthefrontandrearliftarmsare
fixedundertheliftingpointsonthedoorsill.

WARNING!
Highvoltageoutputfromtheignition
system.Thevoltageintheignitionsystem
isdangerous.Theignitionmusttherefore
alwaysbeswitchedoffforworkinthe
enginecompartment.
Donottouchthesparkplugsorignition
