• Nev er rely exclu sive ly on the out side temperature display to
determine if a r oad surface i s icy or not. Keep in mind that road
s urfaces, esp ecially bridg es and overpas ses, could be ice covered
and slippery even at an outside temperature above 41 °F (+5 °C) .
• Always remember, even if the "snowflake " symbol (ice
warning ) does not appear in the di splay , bla ck ice could be on the
road.
• Alway s redu ce your speed and drive with special care in cold
w eather conditions when the chance of encountering icy road
s urfaces increa se s.

• If the vehicle is stat ionary, o r if you are driving at a very low speed,
the temperature shown in the display might be s light ly higher than
the act ual o utside temperat ure. Th is is caused by the heat being radi­
ated fro m the eng ine.
• On vehicles with S t ronic, the reminde rs do not appear in the
display unt il you se lect a gea r.
• O n veh icles wi th Au di Navigat io n system *, the disp lays may d if f e r
from t heir normal appearance dur ing navigation .•

I n orde r to become familiar with the gears hift indicator, begin d riving
as usua l. If the c urrent gea r is not the best o ne fo r conserv ing fuel,
the indicato r will d isp lay the recommended gear. The disp lay shows
the cu rre nt g ear a nd the recommended gear:::::, fig . 8 .
• Upshifting: The d isp lay is to the r ight of the current gear if a
higher gear i s recomme nded.
• Downshifting : The display is to the left of the current gear if a
lower gear is recommende d.
Sometimes the indicator will recommend sk ipping a gear (3
IJIJ> 5).

Thi s ind icator should help you co nse rve fuel. It is not des ig ned to
recommend the correct gear in a ll dr iving situations. Only the dr iver
can dec ide which gear is cor rect i n certain dr iv ing s ituatio ns s uc h as
when accelerating or driving on hills.

When a red symbo l appears , a warn ing tone will sound three t imes in
succession. The symbo l continues to flash until the malfunction has
bee n repaired. If there is
more than one malfunction , the symbols
appear one after the other for about two seconds.

• The message for a malfunction can be shown by pressing on the
left knob.
• During route guidance on vehicles with a navigat ion system, the
wa rni ng symbo l is shown in the fie ld above. •

escaping from the engine compartment -you risk being scalded.
Wait until you can no longer see or hear steam or coolant

Before you p erform any work in the engine compartment , turn off
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the warning sti ckers
=> page 218 , "Engine compartment ".

Do not continue driving if the -¥- symbol illuminates . There is a
ma lf u nction in the engine coo ling sys tem -yo u could damage your
eng ine. •
Engine oil pressure malfunction ~
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol requires
immediate se rv ice o r repair.
If the 9=r. symbo l app ears in the d is pl ay a nd flash es, th e oil
p ressure is to o lo w . In add ition to the sym bol, the f ollow ing
messag e al so a pp ea rs in the dis play :

• The engine oil pressure symbol 'I=:?: is not an indic ato r for a low
engine oil level. Do not rely on it . Instead , check the oil level in your
engine at regular intervals , preferably each t ime you refuel, and
always before going on a long tr ip .
• The yellow oil level warning indication requires oil refill or
workshop service without de lay . Do not wait until the red oil pre s­
s ure warning symbol~ starts to flash before you respond to the
low oil level warning _, . By then, your engine may already have
s uffered serious damage. •

T he indica tor lig ht illuminates if you do no t press t he cl utch pedal
when starting the engine . For safety reasons, the engine will only
sta rt when the clut ch pedal is pressed. •

The outlet may be used for 12-volt app liances w ith maxim um
cons umption of up to 100 watts, such as a flash light, small vacuum

The outlet plus any appliances plugged into it remain functional

& WARNING
• Always remove objects from the instrument panel. Any items
not put away could slide around inside the vehicle while dri ving or
when accelerating or when applying the brakes or when dri ving
around a corner.
• When you are driv ing make sure that anything you may have
placed in the center console or other stor age locations cannot fall
out into the footwells. In c ase of sudden braking you would not be
able to b rake, depres s the clutch or accelerate .
• Any pieces of clothing that you have hung up must not inter­
fere with the driver's view. The co at hooks are designed onl y for
lightweight clothing . Never hang any clothing with hard, pointed
or hea vy objects in the pockets on the coat hooks. During sudden
braking or in an accident· especially if the airbag is deployed ·
the se objects could injure any passengers inside the vehicle. •

The engine can only be started with your original Audi
key.

Do not depress t he gas pedal when starting t he engine!
- Let go o f the key as soon as the engi ne starts.
A cold engine may sound loud after it has been started . Th is is due to
t he hydra ulic valves buil ding up oil p ress ure. This is normal and is not
a need for concern.
If the engine does not start immediately, stop try ing after 10 seconds
and then try to restart the engine about 30 seconds later .
Glow plug system*
Diesel engines are equipped with a glow p lug system whose
preheating t ime is con trolled by the coo la nt and outs ide tempera­
t u re . Start the engine
immediately af ter the glow p lug ind icator light
sw itches off .
Th e g low pl ug indica tor light w ill only ill uminate fo r approximately 1
second when the engine is warm or the outs ide temperature is higher
than 46 °F (8 °C). Tha t means yo u ca n sta rt the engi ne
immediately.
To start the diesel engine after the fuel tank has
been run dry
If the fue l tank was run complete ly dry, the start ing process after
refueling with diesel fuel can take longe r than usual -up to one
minute. This is because the fuel system first has to be vented of air
wh ile starting. _,.

Switching the system off
Temporary deactivation
- Press the brake pedal, or
- Keep the clutch pedal pressed down
longer, or
Press the lever into position

(10 km/h) above the stored speed.
Switching off completely
- Press lever into position@ (clicked into place), or
- Switch the ignition off.
The system retains the saved speed if you deac tivate the cruise
control temporarily. To resume the saved speed, release the brake or
clutch pedal and pull the lever to position
(D.
Switching the ignition off erases the saved speed.
& WARNING
You should only return to the saved speed if it is not too fast for
the current traffic conditions -risk of an accident! •

Audi magnetic ride
Damping can be adjusted to the driver's preference and it
adapts automatically to the current driving situation .

Audi magnet ic r ide is an electronically controlled damping system .
Thi s chassis system assists the drive r by adapting to the particular
sit uat ion through impercept ible control processes. The
damping
prov ides individual modulation of damping forces . For example, with
damping characteristics set to provide greater comfort , damping is
set somewhat harder for a brief period only as required, when
rounding a curve and when braking.
Standard setting
Select the standard setting if you prefer a suspension setting empha­
si zi ng comfort.
Sport setting
Select the spor t set ting if you pre fer a spor ty suspension set ting. The
LED in the switch comes on to ind icate sport setting. ..,.

Gearshift lever
The clutch pedal must be depressed all the way before
you can start the engine.
The manual transmission in your Audi is equipped w ith an
interlock-feature.
- Depress the clutch pedal all the way .
- Start the eng ine with the gears hift lever in Neutral and the
clutch peda l depressed .
0 Note
Always depress the clutch pedal fully when changing gears. Do not
hold the veh icle on a hill with the clutch peda l part ia ll y depressed.
T hi s may cause prem ature clutch wear or damage .
[I) Tips
• Resting your hand on the gearshift lever knob while driving will
cause pr emature wea r in the transm ission.
• The back -up lights go on when you sh ift into Reve rse with the igni ­
tion on. •

Introduction
Your vehicle is equipped with a S tronic transmission, also called a
double-clutch system/transmiss ion.
Power is transferred between the engine and the transm ission by
means of two independent clu tches. They replace the torq ue
converter of conventional automat ic transmiss ions and allow the
vehicle to a cce le rate witho ut a no ticeable b reak in the powe r flow .
With the a id of tiptroni c, the gears can optionally be shifted
manu ­

neously step on the brake pedal. In the R position, the back -up lights
ill uminate with the ign it ion on.
N -Neutral
Th e tra nsmiss ion is in neu tral in t his posi tion.
D -Normal position for driving forward
In this pos it ion, the forward gea rs a re a utoma tic a lly s hif ted up and
down, depending on engine load and ve hicle speed.
T o engage S from N, the brake pedal m ust be depressed at speeds
below 5 km/h or when the vehicle is stationary~&.
In certain circ umstances (driving in the mountains for example) it can
be benefic ia l to sw itc h t emporar ily to the ma nual shift prog ram
~ page 119 in order to adjust the gear rat ios to driving conditions
manually.
S -Spo rt setting
Th e S setting should be selected fo r spo rting dr iv ing. The power
reserves of the engine can be fully exploited through later upshifts .
T o engage S from N, the b rake pedal m ust be depresse d at speeds
below 5 km/h or when the vehicle is stationary~&. .,_

Stopping on an incline
- Always
hold t he vehicle with the footbrake or parking
b rake in order to preve nt "ro llback "=> & . Do not try to
p reve nt t he v ehicle from ro lli ng back by re vving th e e ngine
whi le it is in gea r.
Starting on a hill
- Apply the hand bra ke fi rmly.
- With t he eng ine in gear , gra dually acce lerate a nd release
the hand bra ke.
T he eng ine c an only be started with the selector leve r in P or N
=>
page 107 . At low amb ient temperatures (14 °F /-10 °(), it i s only
possible to start the engine with the selector lever in P.
W hen pa rking on leve l grou nd , it is suff ic ient to p lace the se lector
lever in P. On a steeply sloping road, you shou ld f irst app ly the
par king brake firmly and then p lace t he selecto r leve r in P. T his way,
you do not overload the paw l mechanism and it is easier to move the
selector lever out of P.
& WARNING
• Never leave your vehicle with the engine running while in ge ar.
If you must lea ve your vehicle with the engine running, set the
parking brake and engage the park lo ck .
• When the eng ine i s running and the transmi ssio n is in gear (D ,
Sor R ) or in "tiptronic " mode, it is ess ential that you stop the
v ehicle with the footbrake. When idling , the transmiss ion of
power doe s not stop completely -the vehicle "creeps".
• Do not a ccelerate when you change the selector leve r position
with th e vehicle stationary and the engine runn ing -risk of an acci­
dent!
• Never place the selector lever in the R or N position wh ile the
v ehicle is moving -risk of a n accident!
& WARNING (continued )
• If you have to bring your vehicle to a stop while on an incline ,
keep the foot brake depressed all the way down so that the vehicle
does not start to roll backward. You should never hold the veh icle
using the clutch if you are going to b e stopped on an incline. If you
do , the clutch will start to slip when it o verheats c aused by the
c onstant overload . Thi s is danger ous be cau se if the vehicl e start s
to roll backward , you could cause an accident. If the clutch should
s tart to slip, you will fee l the vehicle "jerk " and the selector lever
d isplay w ill start blinking.
• Befor e driving down a st eep slope, reduc e your speed and shift
i nto a lower gear w ith "tipt ronic ".
• Do not ride the brakes or apply the brake pedal too often or too
long . Constant b raking causes the brakes to overheat and
s ub stantially reduces braking performan ce, in creases braking
d istance or causes complete failure of the b rake system . •

Hill Descent Assist
Hill Descent Assist helps the driver when driving down
inclines.
H ill Descent Assist is activated by pressing the brake while
descending when the se lector lever is in
D /S . The S tronic transmis­
sion a utomat ically s hifts down to a gear s uitable fo r the in cl ine. H ill
Descent Assist attempts to mainta in the cu rrent vehicle speed when
t he br aking oc curs, as far as physical and technical l imi ts allow.
It
may be necessary to adjust the speed using the brakes .
Hi ll Descent Assist switches off w hen the incline levels out or when
the gas pedal is pressed.
On vehicles with cruise control*=>
page 110, Hill Descent Assist is
also activa ted when the speed is set.
